Chapter 7: An Awkward Morning

Jace woke up, but he kept his eyes closed. He basked in the warmth and the slight breeze. A small, beautiful body laid curled into his chest and- Wait. A small body was curled against his chest... Jace's eyes flew open then a bird fell from the sky.

Clary's small body was curled up and he was curled up around her. Jace's eyes hurt and his back ached. He also didn't know why, but he felt lighter than he had in years. Relief? Being able to trust someone again? Having someone care for him? Jace didn't know, but he did know that he was sleeping curled around his slave in the stables... Oh gosh, what had he done?

A man's voice coughed and Jace looked up, fearing that he had been caught by his father. Instead, it was that one slave... Jordan?

"Whoa dude. So I don't know what happened, but when I walked in... not that I was out anywhere... I found you two asleep on the ground in here. I'm not going to input a comment where it's not meant to be, but I just want to say this. If you hurt her, you will not have just me to watch out for. You'll have me, Magnus, Maia, Amatis, Simon, and Max to watch out for. Clary is an amazing person and if you hurt her, we'll hurt you." Then Jordan stomped off toward the shed. "You'd better her up, Clary is due in Max's room in two hours, hardly enough time to get everything she needs done. And Magnus and your father will be returning sometime today, you don't want your father walking in on this... ahem- scene."

"Thank you, Kyle. Also, I really appreciate this, and all the work you do for my family." With this, Kyle froze and whipped around to stare at Jace.

"Your welcome, Mr-"

"Just call me Jace. Please."

Kyle just looked at him weird, but nodded slowly and his eyes found Clary, before sliding back to Jace's. "Okay Jace. Thank you for your gratitude, no one else appreciates it here." The he turned back around and walked out of the stables.

"Clary," Jace said softly and shook her gently. She moaned and stretched out, her arms rising about her head.

"Morning Jace." She sat up, before lying back down and smiled, lazily at him. What is up with her. She's not acting like herself, Jace thought. Then Clary blushed and Jace knew she was back to normal.

"Kyle just walked by, he said to tell you that you only have two hours...?" Clary spring right up.

"Two hours?! Ohmygoodness! It can't already be five-thirty! KYLE!" You heard steps rushing from further down the path, and Jordan appeared several buckets and brooms and shovels in his hands.

"Did you realize your mistake with him yet, SF?" Clary only smiled at him, wryly.

"Haha very funny Kyle. It can't already be five-thirty!"

"It is."

"Oh My Goodness Kyle! And you didn't wake me!" Clary ran over and punched him, hard. Like, Kyle stumbled because she hit so hard. Jace lept forward to hold Clary back, but Jordan just waved him off.

"I get this every morning from her. It's normal." Clary only scowled.

"Don't think I won't be telling Maia about how you woke me up late again! She won't be happy, Ky. Not. Stinkin. Happy. And you know what happens when she's not happy? No late night meeting!"

Kyle gasped. "Okay, okay! I'll wake you up next time! Just please don't tell Maia"

Jace looked between the two. They joked around? Like... friends? Is that what slaves did? He hadn't been a slave in years... around five and he didn't remember, didn't want to remember that time. If this was how they were though, maybe he should hang out with the slaves. They seemed to like him more then his strict, uptight family.

"Maia? The cook? Are you with her?" Kyle just looked at Jace, before his gaze turned to Clary's, who held a look that Jace couldn't see in her eyes. They were talking through their eyes and Jace didn't like it. "That's awesome dude! Don't worry, I won't tell my parents. They're horribl-" One look at Clary and Jace knew he couln't complete that though. He sighed. "I won't tell my parents. You guys deserve to have secrets, just like we do. I know Clary sleeps here every night so why not keep another one."

"Thanks..." Clary only beamed at both of them. Then she turned towards Jace. "I have to get ready and set up everything Max and I need for today. It'll be tough to fit it all in in two hours, but I'll make it. You better go though. Your probably going to be looked for up at the house."

Jace met her eyes and the look in her eyes melted him. "Got it. Thanks so much, Clary. See you in a bit." Then he jogged up the path, patting Clary's crazy, bed-headed hair on the way out.

"SF-"

"Don't yell at me, Ky. We didn't do anything last night."

"Mhmm. Right. Clary, I walked in last night and you guys were hugging and asleep. Sorry if I am having a hard time believing you." Clary made a face.

"He was upset at something his family had said, so we were just talking. I promise Kyle. I would be acting different if something had happened, you know I would." Kyle sighed.

"That's true..."

"I gotta go, Kyle. Max and I are probably going to fields or something and I'll need to get his warm clothes ready, and pack a lunch. Trust me though when I say nothing happened."

"Got it, SF. I hope your day with Max goes nicely. Tell Maia I love her if you see her."

Clary smiled, wryly. "Got it, Kyle. I'll tell her."

She walked out and Kyle could only shook his head. "Nothing happened my butt. Just don't get caught."
