Chapter 8: The Sickness

"Missus Maryse, Missus Maryse!" Clary shrieked running down the halls of the house. "Missus Maryse!"

"What is your problem Clarissa?! Hasn't Robert told you not to bother me?" Maryse exclaimed from her room. She was finished her embroidery and thios darned girl was going to mess her up!

"But ma'am-"

"Shut up you stupid girl! Stop bothering me! You're going to mess up my embroidery!"

"Your son is deadly sick and you're worried about your embroidery?" Maryse jumped up. Why hadn't the idiot girl mentioned it before?

"Where is he? He's sick? What happened?" She shook Clary so hard the Clary became light-headed.

"Please, ma'am. Don't do that."

"Don't tell me what to do! Where is my son?!" Maryse cried, shaking Clary even harder.

"Missus, please! I can't- I can't," and then the girl collapsed in Maryse's arms and begam screaming and pleading with the ghosts she saw.

"Clary?" Jace's voice echoed through the halls and he rushed into his mother's room to find her holding and shrieking Clary and his mother with a disgusted face.

"Get her away from me and take me to my poor baby boy!" She thrusted Clary into Jace's hands and streaked out the door.

"Clary?-" No response. "Clary, I know you can't hear me, but you've got to calm down because as you said, Max is sick and he needs you... and I need you too . You help me think clearly and positively and in order to help us, you have to be okay. Understand?" Clary, who had calmed down, stopped whimpering into her hands and nodded for Jace. "Good, now come on girlie. We gotta go help Max."

Clary pushed herself out of Jace's arms and stalked out of the room. How could she have been so stupid to let Jace hold her like that? She was already trying not to jump him, but now he has the power to calm her down? That's not good.

She walked back to Max's room and found Maryse dabbing Max's head, which was sweating profusely. Max was very pale, so pale he almost looked green.

"No Maxie, no. You're okay, now get up and walk. Get up I said!," She sobbed, hysterically.

"Missus, you have to leave if you are going to act like this. Max can't possibly get better with you like this."

"What do you know about this, you servant! You're probably the one who gave him this sickness! Get out!" Jace gasped and was about to reprimand his foster mother when Max coughed and said something.

"What did you say baby? Can you repeat that? Mommy loves you, you know that right?"

"Mom, shut up! Repeat, Max," Jace exclaimed.

"Is- Is- I..."

"Save your energy, Maxie. I'll get Izzy for you, don't worry." Maryse patted Max's hand and began to stand, but Max shouted, "NO!"

"What's the matter, Maxie? Don't you want your sister to come? Who do you want to see the most?"

Max groaned. "Is Clary here? I want Clare bea- bear an- and Jace and Alec. That's i- it."

Maryse gasped. "What about Mommy? You want Mommy here, don't you?" Max shook his head gently before he threw up right on himself.

He began to choke and Clary rushed forward. "Simon! Help needed!"

"He's so sick, he's becoming brain- boggled," Maryse said.

Simon rushed in and the first thing he saw was Clary giving Max the Heimlich. "Simon- Lewis! Get- In here and help- Me right now! Max is- Choking!"

Simon quickly left the room and Maryse screamed. "Where is he going?! He's not helping my Max at all! When Robert returns, we're firing and selling you, you stupid man!"

"Shut up!" Clary and Jace shouted in unison. Jace then realized he was just standing there and rushed forward to help.

"What can I help with, Clary?" Clary almost rolled her eyes and said something sarcastic before she remembered the situation she was in.

"Simon's probably bringing the chamber pot, so go to Maia and tell her to make some herbal tea for Max and also some calming tea for Maryse."

"Yes ma'am," Jace said and rushed out of Max's room.

"Oh no... Why is this happening?" Clary moaned. Finally, Max wasn't choking, but the moment Jace gave Max tea and Simon brought the chamber pot ion, Max began to become indisposed. He had very bad diarrhea and everyone in the house was worried. Clary finally realized this disease could be contagious and refused to let anyone past the doorway, but herself. Simon forced her to see sense and he was allowed to go in too, after a huge, blown up fight with the little spit fire.

When Clary thought it could get no worse, Robert walked in.

"What is going on in here?" He exclaimed and Clary, already distressed, explained the situation very badly.

"Max is sick, I don't know what he has I'm so worried about him, please call for a doctor, what if he dies, sir don't be mad, please help us, fetch a doctor, diarrhea, he started choking, he can't swallow anything, he is dehydrated, oh goodness!"

"Calm down girl and explain the situation in a way that I understand it!" Clary only shook her head though, and grabbed Robert's hand. She pulled him to the door of Max's room.

"Holy Cow! Max!" Robert tried to rush to Max, but Jace held him back. Clary won't let anyone in but herself and Simon because she is scared Max is contagious. Please father! Get a doctor!"

Robert nodded and ran out the door, down to the stables.

Kyle was staring at the house sadly. He could hear the commotion and was feeling awful for Clary because he knew how much she loved the little boy.

"Magnus! Get the horse, fetch the carriage, we have to run to town! Max is sick!" Magnus had just finished resaddling the horse, for he knew one of the family would rush down like this. He wasn't stupid and Kyle had told him of Max's predicament.

"Yessir, it's all ready to go now."

"Then come on! We have to get to town, maybe Max will be better when we get back!"

They jumped into the carriage and rode to the town apothecary. "Please sir, my son is sick! Please help me, can you ride back to my house with me?!" The doctor only had to nod once before he was whisked back to Lightwood Manor. On the way, they told him of their problem.

They rushed inside to find Clary still huddled over Max, who had finally fallen asleep, with no vomiting or diarrhea. Everyone was in the doorway, including Alec and Isabelle.

"Let me do a check up," he told Clary and she nodded.

As he checked up, he kept nodding. "You did good, girl, for not letting anyone in here. I fear for this boy's life. He is so young to catch this and I don't know if he will make it."

"What does he have?" Alec cried out, worried for Max.

"Cholera. The boy has been infected with Cholera."
