I am Leela, once a warrior of the Sevateem, now a warrior for Gallifrey in this war...the Great Time War, the Time Lords and our enemies, the Daleks, call it. Armoured and wielding a weapon, I fight on the field of battle. People scream and Daleks screech as I move through the raging fires, my gun dealing instant death to my foes. I never dreamed I would see such battles, and I wonder if it will be all I know until death claims me at last. They say nearly all of the universe and all of time is being consumed and destroyed now; the suffering and horrors are beyond imagining.
My husband died long before this conflict started, and the war has claimed the lives of many friends. Even K9 is gone now, and I wish to avenge them, as my heritage demands. At my side now is the Time Lord who first brought me to Gallifrey so very long ago. I knew him as the Doctor, but he no longer likes that name; he is the Warrior now, more fierce and bathed in blood even than I. We kill, and our battle cries split the air. So different to when I first knew him, at times it almost frightens me...
When the fighting has stopped, we walk slowly amid the ruins and the dead, still gripping our guns. The Warrior is silent and his eyes are cold. That is when we hear it: A hideous gurgling and hissing, coming from a broken Dalek shell lying on its side in the scorched earth. A Dalek mutant is weakly crawling there, its' single eye fixing on us as we approach. I am about to aim my gun and end its' evil life in an instant, when the Warrior steps forward and plants his boot on top of the Dalek's eye. The squealing grows louder as it is slowly crushed under the weight. It does not die quickly.
After it is done, the Warrior scrapes his boot clean of the Dalek's remains on a rock and then turns to look straight at me. "Another victory. The battle is won," he says, his voice low and rough. "But the war goes on..." I watch him walk away into the smoke until he disappears, and I suddenly realize that I am crying. For the past, present and future.
