A broken smile crossed Rosalie's perfect red lips as she stood at the entryway of the now sleeping girl's room, just watching her chest rise and fall and listening to the offbeat rhythm of that weakened heartbeat that still somehow even as weak as it was had found the strength to keep beating. Rosalie had never favored humans; her family chalked it up to her snobby better then you attitude due to her supermodel looks and their money. However, it wasn't that in the slightest; but then again she couldn't blame those who thought that of her as only a rare few had ever seen behind the vapid mask she wore; the mask she believed showed her to be strong when she was so weak, still broken from what led her to a life she despised. In truth Rose just envied humans; she envied that they got to eat, sleep, dream, walk in the sun, hell she even envied their ability to catch a cold but most of all she envied their ability to have a family. She envied it so much that if possible, it would have caused an ache in her heart and a churning in her stomach if she were alive; but there was one thing she did hate about humans and that was how humans seemed to spit on all that they should be grateful for. They didn't appreciate anything and every bit of it was taken for granted.
An intense rapid change to the steady beeping brought Rose back from her daze,'What could be causing her such anxiety? 'raced through her mind as she watched intently.
"She is apologizing to her father," Edward muttered as he pulled the chart from the adjacent room's tray, in answer to his sister's question. She turned her citrine eyes to him; this was probably the only time she had ever been appreciative of her brother's ability to invade her thoughts. With a crooked smile in acknowledgment of her appreciation, he darted into his patient's room.
Rose quickly turned her gaze to the sight before her and if possible would have caused a tear to escape her eye. There in that bed laid a sleeping child who was a victim of so much hate and yet was apologizing to a man that caused her nothing but pain. 'You shouldn't be the one to apologize, little one,'her thoughts cried for the tears she could not, as she watched the child flinch as if she was about to be struck. There was no doubt in Rose's mind that the girl was apologizing in her dreams to her father not because she thought it was what the man wanted to hear and hoped it would stop the beating; but because the sweet girl honestly believed it was her fault and truly meant the apology.
"She and I have so much in common," she whispered as she felt a presence behind her.
"I suppose so," Carlisle sighed as he watched his daughter show more emotion on her normally harden face then he had ever seen in the forty four years she had been with the family. He would never forget the night he had smelt the rusty air that led him to the broken, beaten, and violated girl in the alleyway. Moments like this he hated, having the photograph memory of a vampire, sights like this are things you never want to remember-most of all in perfect detail.
"No suppose about it. We were both beaten and broken down by men that we were meant to trust, to love, and who were supposed to do the same in return for us. There is only one difference in our abuse, and I can't be more thankful that she didn't have to face that horror and shame," her normal bell like voice breaking in pain.
Carlisle had no words; what can you say to make any of this better? Slowly he placed his hand on her shoulder. It wasn't words of comfort but a showing of it so she knew that she had someone that loved her.
"At least I was a woman and adult at the time," she bit out in a cold angry hiss. "But she is a child; an innocent child. Don't humans understand what a gift that is? What some of us would give for that?" her voice half anger and half pain at the reminder of how she will never get to have a child of her own, and again feeling anger at the humans' ability to take for granted the fact that they can and only to mistreat such a gift.
"This girl has known nothing but pain since she came into this world, she had one person too look out for her and now that...," she paused in her anger as she watched the girl jump again. Oh, how she could give this sweet little girl such a wonderful life; a warm home, toys, clothing, birthday parties, Christmas' with an extended family but most importantly she could give her a loving mother and father. Sure her mate, Emmett, was a bit of a big child himself but she had no doubt of what a great father he would be. She could see their lives; Emmett would teach her to play tee ball, play every game under the sun with her, he would check happily but yet jokingly under her bed and in the closet for monsters. He would wear a pink boa and drink pretend tea with a raised pinky with a shiny crown adorning his head. He would check on her twenty times a night and would give her a kiss on the forehead with each check. He would fight away her nightmares by holding her close and telling her that she was loved and safe and that nobody would ever get to his little girl. Eventually he would brood when she hit her teens and she went on her first date and who would be that overprotective father that griped about skirts being too short, he would have a half brained scheme to follow his little girl in the shadows of her date. And at the end of each date he would flick the porch light calling an end to any kiss before it could happen.
Rose could give her that motherly love she so desperately wanted to give and the girl so desperately needed. She would play dolls with her, read her stories at night after she tucked her tightly into bed. She would take her shopping, teach her how to do her hair and eventually makeup; and they would have girls' nights where daddy would be kicked out to grandma and grandpa's house. They would do each others hair and paint each others nails while they watched Disney princess movies, and she would listen with a smile at her little girl at how she would rattle on about how one day her prince charming would come. And she would be there as she became a teen and fell apart at each guy that turned out not to be her prince charming and broke her heart. She would fight with her about her attitude problems, curfews, and this and that being unfair, and every parent teen drama. But always in the end knowing it would work out because of the love they had built as a family
"You know that can't happen, Rosalie," Edward's voice cut through her thoughts causing her to turn a hard glare to him. Carlisle raised his eyebrow in question to his son as he wanted to know what exactly couldn't happen. "She wants to take Bella and raise her as her own," he snapped in response to his father's questioning gaze.
A look of understanding crossed Carlisle's features as he turned to his daughter. "He's right, Rose, it can't happen," he said with a sadness at breaking his daughter's hopes and dreams.
"WHY NOT? TELL ME WHY? IT'S NOT LIKE THEY HAVE PLANS TO CLAIM HER!" she screeched at a volume for only their ears to hear.
"Because you know as well as I do we are not allowed to change children."
"Who said I was going to change her?" she bit out."I would never damn anyone to this life."
"It still can't-"
"Why? Emmett and I can raise her, love her and give her a good home, a stable home."
"I don't doubt that you both would love the girl; but how could you give a mortal child a stable life when her parents are vampires and are both old enough to be her grandparents. How would you explain why you never age and always look 18 years old? Even if you told her what you are and she accepted it, how would you explain it to her friends, teachers, and eventually her husband?" Carlisle stoically reasoned knowing that she ached so badly for this but knowing it wasn't meant to be.
"Where there is a will, there is a way," she bit back not willing to let this go.
"Rose-"
"NO! So you are seriously agreeing with the chief mutt that she is better off in the system, a horrible heartless system?" she gritted out through clenched teeth as her eyes started to turn black with rage.
"I have never said that, Rose-"
"Don't have to; your actions speak louder than any thoughts or words," she raged.
Carlisle sighed "Rose, you can't raise her. I know the system is a mess and I know you feel a strong connection to the girl and that I can understand; but she doesn't belong in our world. You need to see and understand what I said earlier proves that."
"We need to leave," Edward's voice cutting into the middle of the argument, causing Rose's black eyes to turn too him.
"This needs-"
"To be finished another time," Edward said sternly, cutting off his father's words as he nodded down the hall.
All three vampires turned to see Allison dropping herself into a seat with tears rolling down her cheeks as she clutched a vanilla envelope. Sam stood fidgeting as Billy pulled him to the side to talk to him and Harry paced trying to relieve the mounting tension.
"Ms. Uley has just signed the last papers to take Samuel home as well as what was needed to be signed for Isabella to remain. They are here now to say goodbye or whatever it is you call this debacle. However, Mr. Black seems to be again making matters worse," he sneered at reading the thoughts of the man who was about to tell those things to the young boy.
"This is-"
"NO is NO, Rose. Now please go, I'm sure I will have things to sign plus I have other rounds to finish," Carlisle sternly chastised.
Whipping her black eyes to him, she sneered 'This isn't over and no matter what, I will be there for her,' echoed loudly in her head, causing Edward to stumble at the impact and determination of the words, before she exited the hospital in a speed that no human eye would see. Carlisle pinched the bridge of his nose in irritation before sending a look to Edward in question of what was running through his sister's mind.
"She swore this wasn't over and from the forcefulness of it, I doubt it is. I believe she will somehow in some way be there for the child," he sighed, looking at his father's frustrated expression.
"I figured as much; she has never been one to let go when she becomes set on something; but as much as I wish we could allow her idea, it just can't be," he paused feeling truly sorry for , Samuel, Rose, and most of all young Bella."Maybe after she cools off a bit and with the help of Emmett she will see reason," he mused as his son nodded in agreement before they both turned and separated to finish their rounds. Both were not looking forward to the go around to come when they got home with an irate Rosalie, but both knowing their beliefs were for the best. Bella, as sad as her circumstances were, didn't belong in their world, but knowing it was going to be an uphill battle to get Rose to agree with reason before she did something she would regret. They were pretty sure she would pull the card of Alice's vision saying she needed care; and it was true Alice said it was important for them to make sure Bella survives but that was directed to her injuries not to surviving a life in a home of vampires. Sure Alice wasn't specific but both Carlisle and Edward didn't need specifics to know what was meant by her words.
Sam fidgeted outside his sister's room, trying to find the nerve to walk in. Everything seemed surreal and none of this made any sense to him. Just when things seemed to be taking a step forward all of a sudden they were taking a huge step back. Sam's eyes caught his weeping grandmother's form down the hall; she was bent over in Harry's arms sobbing but refusing any attempt to come down and see the girl she has only ever seen asleep. He could feel Billy's looming presence beside him and it again unnerved him. The man was the most calm out of everyone, almost like he felt nothing and it confused him. The closest thing he could chalk it up to was the words Harry had once told him. 'As chief of our people, he has to put his feelings aside and wear a brave mask as he is the face of our people.'Sam understood it the best a nine year old could, but he couldn't help but wonder does he ever let that mask slip when not in public?
Sam swallowed roughly as he picked at his thumb nail; he had never felt so much pressure, hurt, confusion and pain at what he was about to do. His mind filtering back to memories of this morning it was the day the papers to take him back to La Push were ready to be signed and they were leaving today, which left him feeling excitement at the thought. Yet he was unsure why his grandmother cried and Harry seemed upset and unable to look at him. It all seemed strange behavior until he was pulled aside and Billy told him what was happening. Bella would be staying here at the hospital. Anger filled him at the words he was being told. He left his sister once and she nearly died; now he was to leave her again? Through gritted teeth he seethed the question why. He was told that his grandma was sick and that due to Bella's condition, they wouldn't allow her to be put in their grandmother's care. Again through gritted teeth, he spoke how he would take care of his sister. But Billy shook his head and said that the people in charge of those choices said that he was only nine and it wasn't right for him to continue that burden. Sam wasn't dumb; he asked why he or Harry couldn't care for his sister. That's when the biggest shock and hurt hit him. He was told that his father didn't want to give up Bella, but had given away his claim on him seeing how he was an important part of the tribe's future and since he never planned on returning, it was important for Sam to take that place. Billy told Sam that his father promised to get counseling and meet any requirement to get Bella back after six months of probation. Hearing that crushed Sam; no matter what tribal rights his father wanted Sam to have, it ripped at his heart to know that his father would throw him aside but want to keep Bella after everything that he had done to her. Why would he want to keep her and not him? It made no sense and it cut deeply, especially knowing that now he was willing to get help to keep Bella and not him. If he was so worried about tribal rights, he should step up to the responsibility to keep the three of them as a family and return to La Push and take on whatever those responsibilities were himself; and not force them onto his son that he was throwing away.
He knew Billy continued to talk to him but Sam heard nothing; everything was static in his mind. A hand on his shoulder, startled him out of his thoughts to see Harry's brown eyes looking down at him.
"I don't understand..." Sam whimpered.
"I know, Son; there isn't anything we can do. As hard as it is, we can't take her with us as the law isn't on our side right now. Besides, maybe right now it's for the best; you're to young to understand but Bella needs more care then we can give and right now the State is willing to help with it, you want your sister to get better don't you?" Causing Sam to nod stiffly, Harry sighed as he looked into the misty brown eyes of the boy. Even as an adult all this was fucked up, but at least it made more sense because you could understand all the things in play between Joshua, the state's laws, and Allison's health. But how do you get a nine year old child to understand fully? "I know you don't want to leave her, none of us do, but in the long run we have no choice," Harry murmured in a broken tone.
"Sam," Billy's stoic voice cutting into the conversation between his friend and the young boy,"It's best we get this done with. I know you don't want to but you have to understand it's best to get it over with, like ripping a band aid off quickly it will hurt less for the both of you. You're going to have to be strong and tell her staying here is what's best for her and that it's where she needs to be and that you need to be with us because those are the facts. Nothing can change them."
Harry narrowed his eyes at his old friend, not understanding his coldness towards the situation."Sam, just because we are leaving doesn't mean you still can't write you sister. They promised us an address and you can probably call too; they even said that you and your grandmother can visit from time to time," Harry steadily told the young boy, causing Sam to nod. "And during the next six months if your dad doesn't do right by her, we as the tribe have the right to claim her and bring her home," he added to a boy who was beyond full comprehension on the situation but nodded as if he understood.
A loud clearing of a voice caused Sam to jump out of his thoughts bring him back to the present and for him to look up at Billy, who stood close by."Remember what I said, Son. Like a band aid, the quicker it is the better it is for the both of you."Sam shook his head in understanding as he took a deep breath and called on all his stoic nature to be able to get through this; like he had weeks ago when he walked away, never thinking he'd have to do the same thing twice.
The door creaked as it was pushed open, causing Bella's eyes to dart to it like a magnet. She still was scared when it opened; it reminded her of the night when an opening door lead to the worst night of her life. Quickly her eyes assessed the figure entering, causing a nervous smile to cross her lips at seeing her brother enter. Her eyes darted upward as he stood for a moment leaving the door wide open. She searched for their grandmother; Sam had promised when he came again their grandmother would be with him. Bella's smile dropped as she watched him enter alone. As he got closer she saw his face and it made her heart rate pick up;it was the face that he wore that morning, a face she never wanted to see again.
"She isn't coming; doesn't want to," he said softly, taking in her expression knowing what she was looking for. Knowing that again he broke a promise, causing anger to burn in him not only at himself but at his grandmother for not even taking time to meet her granddaughter. All because she said it hurt to much and she didn't want Bella to see her like this. 'But yet all three found it okay for him to be the one to break her,' his inner voice snapped.
Slowly he came closer. After what seemed like a lifetime, he reached her bedside and took her small hand into both of his, causing Bella to look down at the iron grip that was clasped around her hand, which caused her brow to furrow.
"Bella," at the sound of his monotone voice she raised her eyes to meet the blank brown ones that stood next to her, causing again another spike in her heart rate at the similarity to the eyes he wore on the worst day of her life. "We're leaving."
Hearing those words caused her to smile a bit as she wanted to go to this new home Sam talked about. She could understand her grandmother's absence now; she was getting her some clothing so she could travel to her new home. Sam sighed, causing her eyes to dart back to his and again furrow in confusion at the look on his face.
Sam knew what she was thinking. They only ever had each other and in all those years he knew with a look or maybe just some sort of instinct what his sister was thinking. "No, Bella, we are leaving," he paused as she furrowed her brow even more, "We, as in Billy, Harry, Grandma, and me. We are leaving today and you're going to stay here in the hospital and eventually go back to Daddy."
Bella's mind went blank and static filled her mind, tuning out all that Sam was saying. She could feel her stomach churn, and her chest tighten as her heart raced as the words echoed in her mind again. 'We, as in Billy, Harry, Grandma, and me. You're going to stay here in the hospital and eventually go back to daddy.'The replay of the words caused her chest to tighten more as it became harder to breathe and for her heart to beat faster at realizing she was being left behind again. But this time not by just Sam but three other people, who she was told were here to help, but had only come in reality to help Sam. That is why they gave Sam so much attention and love. Her heart shuttered at realizing her grandmother didn't even want to meet her. Sam's words flashed through her mind, 'Doesn't want to.'Not even her grandmother cared enough to pay her any attention or fight for her. Now she was to be sentenced to go back to living with her father; even after all he had done to hurt her, people were going to send her back. Bella realized there would be nobody to save her because everyone believed she deserved the punishment she had gotten from her father. She deserved it for taking the life of her mother. Tears tracked down her face at the realization that she wasn't loved. She was taken care of by Sam so she could face her punishment for her crime. She was brought here not to get better and be loved by unknown family members; no, she was brought her to get better so she could be sent home and again pay for her sins. Tears sprung from her eyes like a monsoon as she tried to scream out but only empty air with a few squeaks came forth. This only caused her to cry harder, realizing her father had took her voice due to her disrespect at talking back and he made sure she would never be able to do so again.
"BELLA!" Sam's stern voice cut through her fog, but she wouldn't turn to look at him. She felt a tight squeeze on her hand, causing her to look down and see her hand still in his. Suddenly it felt so wrong; his touch made her hurt even more and with a strength she didn't know she had, she ripped her hand away from his grasp. He quickly tried to take it back but she pulled her hand away at each attempt.
A heavy sigh echoed as he stopped his advances. He took his hands and grabbed her face and pulled it to face him causing his stoic mask to almost break at seeing the hurt, rejection, fear and loneliness in her eyes. "I swear, Sis, I will write and I know grandma will too when she's stronger; and they said we can visit," he paused hoping to see something that she understood in those eyes.
'Lies, lies and more lies,' shrieked through her mind.
"I will write you as soon as I get there and send pictures too," he promised and he meant it, but she didn't believe any of his words. She didn't want to see where he got to be happy; the thoughts just caused her to sob harder. "I love you, Bella," he whispered as he leaned over and kissed her tear stained cheek before stepping back.
'Lies,' again shrieked through her mind. Bella sat there sobbing as she watched him turn around and walk away; not failing to notice he again walked away without a backwards glance.
As the door sealed itself Sam's eyes released all that he held behind his stoic mask. He felt a strong hand on his shoulder and from the corner of his eye he saw it belonged to the man that told him a clean, stern break is what was best. With a jerk of his shoulder Sam ripped himself away from Billy and with fists balled tightly walked into the waiting room where he threw a crying Allison a disgusted look. How could she cry like this, claiming she loved Bella so much but couldn't go in and see her and help explain to her. How couldn't she agree with him that this was the wrong way to say goodbye? He didn't wait, he just charged forth as the three adults followed him out of the building and under the overhang. 'At least that sickly sweet smell was gone here,' he sighed as it was the only good thing in leaving that building.
Billy opened a door to a taxi that was already waiting with their bags. Sam slowly entered, keeping his gaze forward and refusing to look at the building where the person he cared about most laid shattered by his hands. A strong hand landed on his shoulder as they pulled away.
"She'll be with us again in six months; I can pretty much guarantee it," Harry's voice whispered in what he believed was a reassurance. All Sam could do was nod his head in acknowledgment but the words brought no relief to his pain.
As the door sealed Bella began to sob even harder. Her lungs burned and it was becoming even harder to breathe again, not only from the burning but the over powering sickly sweet smell that worsened each and everyday. As she turned her head towards the window, her eyes caught the site of the purple flowers. Anger coursed through her body at seeing the offending so called gift. Reaching out she caused the IV to rip from her hand as she took the glass into her hand. Shakily she held it in front of her as she glared down at it. How could you give someone a flower meaning one thing only to do the opposite of what it represented by turning around and walking away and forgetting about that someone as you walk into a new life? A searing rage ripped through her body and with a new found strength, she threw the gift across the room. She started to kick and wail silently to the thoughts in her mind, drowning out the sound of the impact and the breaking of glass as the projectile hit the door. This caused a wet smear to run down the door and broken glass and twisted flowers to lay at the base of it; it all became a mashed mess as the door whipped open as nurses reacted not only to the crashing sound but the sounds of the wailing machines. As the nurses grabbed ahold of the distraught child, the once screaming heart monitor started to slow its pace again and her kicking became less wild as her body started to shut down.
"What's going on?" Carlisle asked as he stormed into the room with Edward, Alice and Rosalie on his heels.
"She is having some sort of tantrum," the nurse sneered.
"Obviously!" Edward snarled at the nurse as he made his way closer to the distraught girl, causing a slight growl to erupt from her throat, which instantly shocked all the vampires in the room but Alice, as she was lost in a trance.
"We have this. Please go and prep an OR," Carlisle quickly dictated
With a huff the nurse did as she was told, seeing as there was no point in staying since there were two doctors in the room. As the nurse cleared the doorway Rose closed the door quickly before turning her eyes and locking them on the girl, whose face was flushed and stained with tears. As Bella's heart rate dropped even more and with each less beat, Rose saw her dreams going up in smoke. As she stood next to the bed she took the girls hand into hers, causing a barely audible growl to be heard from the girl.
"Carlisle?" Rose's voice a mere whisper only a vampire could hear.
"She is dying from her injuries, Rose. In her fit from being left by her family, she ripped her stitches, tearing a hole from where the stomach tube was placed, along with the stitches from her trachea tube, and not to mention she has again damaged her lungs..." he sighed as he attempted to do what he could but unsure it would matter.
"Okay, am I the only one who is going to call out the elephant in the room? The girl growled at us," Edward stated, annoyed at the others who acted like they hadn't heard it.
"It must just be a reaction sound from the damage, because-"
"Yes she can..." the sweet voice of Alice cut Carlisle short.
"Alice you-"
"She's not mistaken," Edward cut in this time at seeing what he was allowed access too in his sister's mind.
"How is that possible? She isn't even full blooded," Carlisle muttered as he continued to prep the girl for surgery.
Alice came closer and placed her hand on the girl's feverish skin, instantly a louder growl forced its way forward before Bella returned to panting for air. Carlisle gasped, she shouldn't be able to make that sound or any sound with the damage to her throat and from just having the tube removed not long ago, causing him to turn to Alice in disbelief.
"Do you mind sharing," Rose snapped.
"She's a shifter," Edward sighed as if it should be obvious.
Rose gasped at those words. Because they killed the dream of raising the girl as her own, as a shifter they couldn't cohabit. Even though that dream died, she would still be there for this girl, she swore it. They lived to much the same path; they were bonded.
Alice tisked at her brother, "Only partly."
"Like all shifters, half human," Edward stated in a sing song voice.
"Hardly," Alice rolled her eyes at her brother's assumptions, causing her brother to raise his brow in curiosity at his sister's words and the wall not allowing him to see what she meant by the girl not being half human. "Carlisle, I know how we can save her," Alice said softly as she stroked the girl's face again, this time causing a snarl to come forward
"We can't have a child shift in a hospital," Carlisle sighed.
"If it saves her, we-"
"She won't," a confident Alice smiled, knowing it would be impossible after seeing the future and what the girl truly was. "Don't you see how she stables at our proximity?" Alice said bringing focus to the machines and for Carlisle's jaw to drop in shock. "She will still need surgery, but with our constant proximity into the wolves den... How can I say this? Ah yes, has poked the wolf," she giggled a bit at her play of words.
"I don't understand at all, Alice," Carlisle huffed.
"In theory it would work; our closeness could cause her healing genes to step up to bat and heal her more quickly. Not just current injuries but maybe even all the past ones as well, and by the looks of it, Alice's theory is accurate," Edward whispered in shock at seeing the ability for it to work in Alice's mind
"But to much will cause her too-"
"For her kind it's impossible," Alice sighed as she looked up at her father. "It might be hard to believe, but our lives and so many others rest on her. Like I said, she needs to survive and this is the only way; I wouldn't have been shown it if it wasn't meant to be," Alice whispered with conviction as she locked eyes with her father.
"Who are we to bet against a seer," Rose smirked. "If you don't want to sit with her, I will."
"This is crazy, you know," Carlisle murmured as he took in his three children.
The creaking of the door had all heads turning towards it intently. "The OR is prepped, doctor," the nurse stated at the weary looking doctor.
A hand on Carlisle's arm had him looking down into his pixie daughter's pleading eyes. "What lives in her blood isn't strong enough to heal yet, without your help," Alice stated simply and with certainty.
"Alright, lets go," Carlisle stated as he kicked the brake release as he and Edward started pushing the bed out of the room in a race to get it to the OR and save what Alice deemed was too be the savior of so many lives.
"Will she make it?" Rose asked, her voice a shaky whisper. Even though she couldn't raise Bella as her own, she meant it, she would be there.
Alice shrugged, "It's still undecided."
Rose snorted in annoyance. She hated the cryptic stuff; even if she understood that things were subject to change on decisions or couldn't be spoken about due to a higher power.
"Does she really have that much importance?" Rose asked as her sister walked into the small closet to remove a broom and dust pan to clean up the shard ridden mess at the base of the door.
"yes; but she still has to choose when the time comes," Alice said sadly
"Who will help her choose?"
Alice looked up at her sister with a knowing smile, "Why you, of course."
I know a lot of you are pretty upset they left Bella behind but like I said at the end of the last chapter Billy isn't firing on all cylinders. Will it come back and bite him in the ass? of course... and in three chapters we will find out how badly it does.
As you can see the Cullen family will play a large roll in Bella's recovery... most of all Rosalie.
Also now you can see Bella is part shifter, but also something else as well that keeps her from shifting even when exposed to vampires... however like Alice mentioned the exposure did poke the wolf kicking parts of her gene into gear.
Again, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. Please review, but no flames please.
