Chapter 7

Ivy covered her mouth in surprise. Jigsaw had provided Lawrence with another way to kill Adam under Ivy's nose and Lawrence had been hiding it well. She turned round and quickly replaced the note back in the box checking on Lawrence. He was preoccupied with stroking the photo of his loved ones. On a closer inspection she could see the tears rolling slowly down his cheeks as he held a fist to his mouth.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO THEM YOU BASTARD?" He shouted at the top of his voice making Ivy wince and Adam glance up. Knowing Ivy would be unable to help Adam if she needed to from all the way over there, Ivy began to walk back to her own spot her hand near the electrics shocks if she needed to give Lawrence a warning. He had picked up the card she had just replaced and she grinned like a Cheshire Cat at her own cunning, Adam had gone back to staring at his own hands. Ivy pretended she was busy with her shackle and kept a watchful eye on Lawrence as he snuck forwards and dipped the very tip of one of the cigarettes in the blood before returning it to the box. Poisonous blood. Ivy remembered. She was screwed. If Lawrence gave Adam the poisoned cigarette and Adam smoked it like he desperately wanted to then she and Adam were fucked. But there was no way she could warn Adam without revealing that she had read Lawrence's note. What if Lawrence tries to get rid of me before killing Adam? She thought with fear. Lawrence got to his feet his gaze firmly on the camera as he switched off the lights, Adam had noticed something fishy was going on too.

"Hey what are you doing?" He asked. Lawrence didn't answer.

"What are you doing?" Ivy repeated, her sudden blindness terrifying. What if Lawrence was going to do something under the cover of darkness. Ivy felt the most vulnerable she had ever felt. How was this fair? Her hand hovered over the knife in the sink as Lawrence shushed both of them.

"Shhh Adam, Ivy I want you to play along. I'm going to give Adam the cigarette that doesn't have the blood on it and then you need to try and fake your own death. Ivy I need you to help me make it look convincing cause we know Adam is a shit actor. You both got that?" He asked as he told us his carefully laid plan. Ivy relaxed a little knowing that Lawrence was still being a good person. Adam and Ivy both agreed and Ivy sat back down to make it look more casual.

"I don't appreciate that comment..."

"Adam shut it." Ivy hissed as Lawrence switched the light back on. It burned their eyes every time as all three of them tried to act as casual as possible. It seemed the most unlikely plan ever. Ivy seriously doubted it would work.

"So you still want that cigarette?" Lawrence asked, Ivy was glad her spot was out of the direct view of the camera as she cringed a little at Lawrence's casual voice.

"Ummm yeah." Replied Adam.

Ivy watched Lawrence like a hawk as he bent down to retrieve the right cigarette and chucked it over to Adam along with a lighter. Adam glanced at Ivy wanting her opinion and she inclined her head. It was the best plan they had right now. Shrugging Adam lit up and took a long intoxicating drag of the cigarette. The stress and tension seemed to roll of his shoulders like waves as he quickly took another drag. Ivy and Lawrence gave each other a synonymous look wondering how much longer Adam was going to milk it for. Lawrence was intent and playing his part well. Ivy's eyes flicked to the electric shock button and froze as an epiphany came crashing down on her head. She was meant to keep Adam alive. If their little scheme worked and Jigsaw did believe that Adam was dead. Then she had failed. As all these sudden thoughts whirled and tumbled around her Adam had started to choke and was falling to the ground. Ivy turned her head to Lawrence who was giving her a look as she wasn't doing her bit anymore. But Ivy couldn't even think never mind convincingly pretend that Adam was dying in the corner. Adam was shaking, nearly vibrating with a hand clutching his throat so tightly it was going white.

Ivy lost all coherent thought. The line had blurred between reality and pretend. She didn't know if Adam was still faking or if he was really dying. She could feel herself hyperventilating as she began to seriously panic. Even Lawrence was now looking a little worried. He's poisoned him. Was her only thought. Lawrence has lied to both of us and has poisoned Adam with that bloody cigarette. Ivy peered under the sink and saw a tiny 'A' next to one of the buttons as her hand clumsily felt over the electric button. Adam wasn't moving. Not moving a muscle and a sinister silence fell over the bathroom.

"There I've done it. I've killed him with the poison just like you wanted." Declared Lawrence holding his arms out towards the camera. "Now where's my family? WHERE ARE THEY"

Ivy closed her eyes, only now could she feel the tear tracks staining her cheeks and falling on the vile tiles below, obscured slightly by her dark hair. Her quivering, shaking hand pushed the button firmly as she squeezed her eyes tightly shut. The sound of buzzing filled the room. It was a horrific sound like one would expect to hear when a fly frazzles itself on a bug zapper. Adam let out a strangled noise as he tried to scream through the electrocution. A clueless Lawrence stared on in a mixture of confusion and anger as Adam scrambled to reach his shackle, the source of his pain. Ivy realising her fingers were still firmly pressed on the button quickly released it in pure shock. She did not know she would be capable of causing anyone such pain. The electric impulses relinquished their torture of Adam instantly.

"What are you doing?" Asked Lawrence in astonishment.

"I...I just got electrocuted." Cried Adam, his voice shaking at the sudden shock.

"What? Jesus that was our way out." Moaned Lawrence indignant that of all things Adam had to go and get himself shocked. He wasn't the one to blame in the room.

"Didn't you hear what I said?" Argued Adam his voice filled with fear as he forcefully tried to push the shackle off his foot, grimacing through the pain. "Get this thing off me! Get it off!" Ivy swallowing the fear and guilt that was rising in her throat began to make her way over to Adam wanting to get as far away from that button as possible. She laid a gentle hand on his back, his white t-shirt was freezing to touch.

"Oh stop acting!" Shouted Lawrence his head in one of his hands. "And you!" Ivy looked up, her body slightly in front of Adam guarding him like a shield ready to take on Lawrence. "You were just as bad as Adam, didn't react of anything."

"I was thinking of my game and what I have to do. Keep Adam alive." Stated Ivy, her voice icy. "If that means sabotaging you then I will."

"Yeah do you think I would make that up just to mess up your fucking charade?" Added Adam, he was still breathing heavily from his electric shock.

"Wait, what do you mean sabotage?" Clocked Lawrence and Ivy froze as the spotlight finally turned to her. She remained silent.

"Wait. You...you shocked me?" The innocent disbelief in Adam's voice sent a jolt of guilt through Ivy as she looked back at Adam hanging her head a little. "I had to make sure you weren't dead. That he hadn't really poisoned you."

"By shocking me?"

"What else could I have done?" She asked her voice rising in distress.

"You could have gone along with it like we did." Lawrence's voice was bitter and resentful, "You could have trusted me."

"You could have told us about the shocks." Murmured Adam, looking at Ivy with a hint of fear in his eyes. Ivy softening instantly kneeled down and Adam recoiled slightly.

"Adam I am so sorry. I, panicked." She admitted. "I am not as strong as you and Lawrence are. I need to survive this and the only way I can is to keep you alive. If Jigsaw did believe that you were dead then both you and me would have failed wouldn't we?"

Adam nodded but Lawrence was only getting more riled up. "So you'll save you own neck along with his but you won't help me or my family." He shouted. "It's not like I was trying to poison you."

"I am sorry." Ivy repeated. Falling back onto her heels as Lawrence threw his hands up in the air and grabbed the hacksaw trying once again to cut through his chains. Apparently he preferred to take his anger out on them rather than Ivy herself. Even though in her eyes she deserved it now. Can I really let a family die to save my own skin?" She turned back to gaze sadly at Adam who was trying to cover his body with his arms, rubbing them up and down. Ivy recalled how cold he had been to touch and wordlessly took off Adam's own over coat and slipped it round his shoulders. His wild eyes locked onto hers immediately before gingerly feeling his over coat.

"I remember everything now." He whispered. Ivy stared at him as he reached hand out to her, she took it straight away. "I remember how I got here...and I remember you."

"Me?" She whispered.

"Yeah. I gave you a leaflet to my, uh my friend's band's concert. Remember? That's why you looked so familiar to me. Wrath of the Gods?"

Ivy's eyes widened as the memory took hold of her, a memory of the young man who had knocked into her shoulder when she was on the way home from work. He had apologised and asked to take a picture of her while giving her a leaflet to his friend's band. She had brushed poor Adam off saying she didn't like wannabee paparazzi and carried on walking making sure he saw her dump the leaflet in the nearest bin after glancing at it. Maybe she did deserve to be in here after all. "That was you."

"Yeah it was." Adam's voice was a monotone as he looked up at Ivy. "You really hurt me that night. You made me feel invisible."

Ivy looked down at the bathroom tiles feeling as dirty as the tiles they were sitting on. Lawrence was listening from the other side with interest. His chain echoing now and then when he changed position. "I am so, so sorry Adam." Ivy tired again but closed her mouth. "I don't know what to say." She finished looking away and running her fingers over a near by piece of glass from the destroyed mirror. "I must seem like such a bitch to you."

"You do." I raised me eyes at that and Adam gave a shaky laugh. "You are a bitch and now you've electrocuted me. But you've also tried to help both of us probably more than once. You've done more than I have that's for sure." He gestured to his over coat. "You're very sensitive and I thought that quality was dead. It's... nice." He finished. It was a little cheesy and Lawrence snorted in the corner but it touched Ivy and she smiled at Adam, pulling the over coat tighter around him.

"I'd vomit but I don't want to stink this room up more than it already is." Came a sycophantic voice from the other side of the bathroom.

Ivy ignored the Doctor and kept her attention on Adam. "What else do you remember?"

Adam thought for a moment, "I remember how I got here. I remember coming back home to my shithole apartment after seeing you and going to develop some photos. I must have fallen asleep cause when I woke up the power was out. I could hear someone in my apartment so I grabbed a baseball bat and used the flash of my camera so I could see a bit. It's so frigging bright it burns your eye out of their sockets." He remarked bitterly as he recalled more and more. "There was this fucked up clown puppet sitting in one of my chairs and it gave this freaky laugh that didn't stop till I smashed it's face in with the bat. I opened my closet and next thing I knew this pig-thing was wrestling me trying to inject me with a needle of something...I don't remember anymore so I guess it must have got me."

Adam's story was pretty chilling and more than anything Ivy wanted to remember how she got there herself. But one thing made sense in her mind. If she saw Adam only a few minutes before then someone else other than Jigsaw abducted her. He's not alone. Was the one thought spinning round her brain. He's got an accomplice.

Next thing Ivy heard was the shrill, foreign sound that echoed around the bathroom, bouncing off the frequency so it sounded as if it was coming from all around them. Adam even glanced at the camera to see if it was coming from behind the plastic. Lawrence picked up the cellphone, staring at in confusion wondering, like Ivy who could possibly be calling them.

"Hello?" Lawrence went rigid again at the voice on the other side of the phone. Ivy looked to Adam whose mouth was set in a deep line on the floor. It must be Jigsaw thought Ivy, however she was quickly proven wrong by Lawrence's shrill cry as his voice caught in his throat. "Diana!" Ivy bolted from beside Adam moving the fastest she had in the bathroom, the chain pulling awkwardly as she ran to Lawrence's aid. He was slowly breaking down, his hand shaking as much as his voice as he tried to reassure his daughter on the phone. He hadn't noticed Ivy was there. This was not good. "Put mommy on the phone Sweetie." Said Lawrence holding a hand out as if Diana was right in front of him. "Ally?" Cried Lawrence, his wife must have been put on the phone. As his wife spoke Lawrence's expression changed from panicked fear to one of confusion. If Ivy was completely honest she was sick of seeing both from the desperate Doctor. He was glancing at Adam in suspicion again and Ivy straightened up praying to God there wouldn't be another confrontation. The call ended and Lawrence lowered the phone, he was still traumatised.
