Another chapter in the same night for you all to enjoy as penance for being an awful author!
Hope you all enjoy!
Chapter 8
"Are they okay?" Ventured Adam in a gentle voice, his eyes were looking beyond Lawrence and Ivy, back into his memories.
Lawrence muttered a small "Thank you" to Ivy and patted her hand awkwardly as he stared at the young photographer. "My wife, she mentioned your name." He declared.
"What did she say?" Adam seemed innocent enough to Ivy.
"She told me I could trust Ivy, but I'm not to believe you." Revealed the glaring Doctor. Lawrence pushed quickly to his feet, his eyes blazing with newfound anger and hate. Ivy backed off instantly coming to rest exactly in the middle of the two. "Who are you?"
Adam was not looking at Lawrence, he was still waist deep in his memories. "You know who I am."
"Stop the lies. You're a liar!" Shouted Lawrence, Adam's riddles finally getting the better of him. Adam seemed to finally snap too as the same hatred Lawrence had for him starting to burn in his eyes.
"Adam... Lawrence." Warned Ivy, holding a hand out to each of them.
"I'm the liar?" Challenged Adam getting to his feet. "What did you do last night Lawrence huh? Last night you told Ivy and me that you were at the hospital."
"That, that's the truth." Stuttered the Doctor looking to Ivy who frowned not following the conversation at all anymore.
"No it's not." Adam stepped back over towards the bath and bent over pulling out the bag that had contained the dripping hacksaws from the toilet. "I can prove that you didn't go anywhere near a hospital last night." He shoved a hand in and drew out a handful of black and white photos before throwing them and the hundreds more in the black bag to the floor so they spilled out across the bathroom, narrowly missing the blood. As Ivy and Lawrence peered closer at the photos Ivy saw that the majority of them were of Lawrence. Her eyes widened in shock, it was creepy. She glanced up at Adam warily, "It's not the first time I've done it either, Ivy." He muttered never breaking eye contact. It was the most powerful Adam had been since they all woke up. She looked up at Lawrence who seemed to be completely lost for words, his eyes were flicking between the pictures and the photographer, Adam cocked his head to the side, "I've been taking pictures of you for a few days now." Indeed Adam's words rang with a sickening truth as Ivy stared at the photos, some of them were getting stained in the poisoned blood. Lawrence on the way home from work, Lawrence going to work. Lawrence buying a smoothie, Lawrence outside a shitty motel.
"Where did you get these?" Ivy vaguely registered Lawrence's perplexed tone as she continued to stare at the photographs on the floor, her eyes fixated on a photo, slightly blurred compared to the others. Ivy could distinctly make out her figure from the back as she was walking away.
"Is this the night we met?" She asked an eyebrow raising as she looked up at Adam who nodded in agreement.
"Managed to take it when you were walking away." He admitted, shrugging while trying to appear nonchalant.
"And you developed it?" She asked an unpleasant bite creeping into her tone. Adam was starting to freak her out a little, perhaps Jigsaw had him pegged when referring to him as a voyer.
"Look you weren't a special photo or anything." Protested Adam, "I just develop every shot I take and see if their any good or if their crap. Usually they are crap." He added on the end bitterly. Ivy continued to stare at him and Adam backed off a little under her gaze. "You both wanna know what I do? I get paid to take pictures of rich guys like Lawrence who go to seedy, out-of-the-way motels to fuck their secretaries." Adam finished just as powerfully as before. Ivy's eyes went straight to Lawrence as she bent her head as the information filed itself away in her brain. Adam smirked at Ivy's look of surprise at the apparently not so innocent Doctor, using her accusing expression to clear his dodgy line of work, he directed his next words tantalisingly towards Lawrence. "Last night I went to your house. I watched you leave, I followed you all the way to that shitbag hotel."
"But where did you get these?" Repeated Lawrence his temper fraying.
"I took them." Replied Adam snidely avoiding an answer.
"Where in this fucking bathroom? You've obviously had these with you the whole time." Cried Lawrence flinging his arms out in anger.
"I found them, in there with hacksaws." Answered Adam eventually, "I don't know how they got there." Comprehension dawned on Ivy as her mind flashed back to Adam chucking the black bag discreetly into the bath tub. She had wondered what he had been doing but had forgotten about it with all the other shit that was going on.
Lawrence who had been completely clueless snorted, "Yeah, right. You're so full of it!"
"Oh face it, Larry, we're all bullshitters." Declared Adam looking at both Lawrence and Ivy, "But my camera isn't." He warned the two as he waved some of the photos threateningly in front of Ivy. "It doesn't know how to lie. It only shows you what's put right in front of it."
Ivy feeling the pressure building in the room, backed away back to her safe little corner as Adam paused dramatically as Lawrence glared up at him in pure fury. All the sympathy Ivy had felt towards the man in the blue shirt chained up listening to his wife and child being threatened by a gun had completely vanished. He was a liar and a cheater, just like most of his kind. She had put two and two together knowing there was only one reason why a man of Gordon's stature would venture anywhere near a seedy motel. A dark part of her mind sneered wondering if it was at all possible to compromise with Jigsaw if they could let Gordon die and pardon his wife and child. Diana was certainly very young. Too young to deal with another scar if she did make it out of this situation alive, and that was only if she and Adam were bleeding as much as the corpse in front of her.
"Just out of curiosity, what did you do in that motel room?" Goaded Adam, not being able to quiet his glee at successfully turning me against the Doctor. "You got outta there pretty fast."
"I think it is quite obvious what Larry was doing in that room." Answered Ivy quickly as Lawrence turned a scandalised eye on her. "Or who he was doing." She finished just as dramatically as Adam who smiled at her with an impressed look on his face.
"So what's your big fault?" Snapped Lawrence at Ivy who stopped smirking at once.
"Come again?"
"So he's a fucking voyer just like the man on the tape said..." Began Lawrence gesturing towards Adam as if he was a particularly annoying spider on the other side of the room.
"Hey hey hey I am not a voyer. I just take pictures so I can have a fricking MacDonalds." Cried Adam.
Lawrence continued as if there had been no interruption, "And it seems the two of you think you've got me all figured out like a nicely wrapped present."
"There's nothing nice about you." Sneered Ivy as she folded her arms protectively in front of her, the temptation to give him a little shock of warning was becoming very strong.
"So what is your big secret then? What is the reason behind you being shut away with the two of us. Why did he feel the need to put you in this shithole with us?" Asked Lawrence and a silence fell.
"I...well according to my tape I am too ambitious." Ivy started, glancing at Adam for help but he seemed happy to hear her out as long as the blame couldn't be pinned on him. "If you listened to my tape you'd remember that I've done whatever I could to make sure I got on the Jigsaw case. If that meant I had to steal a couple of important case files to get ahead then that has to be done."
"So you're another crooked cop?" Lawrence rolled his eyes dismissively.
"The whole FBI organisation is corrupt in some sort of way." Ivy spat as her hands shook a little in anger. The colour in her cheeks was rising, as was the heat. How dare he. She thought menacingly hate flaring through her body. "How do you think they manage to put so many people like you away?"
"You're on a different level to me Ivy." Lawrence's face was twisting in a ugly way, "People have probably lost their lives because of you and your kleptomanic hands. How do you know they didn't need those files? How do you know it wasn't those exact files that could have stopped this from happening?" He shouted flinging his arms out gesturing to the whole bathroom. Ivy's thumb brushed over the shock button as she crouched down near the sink.
"I will remind you that I have the power to take one more life Doctor." She had lowered her voice so that Adam and Lawrence both had to lean in to hear her; Adam looked as if he could have happily plopped down with a bag of popcorn. "And I do not think you would like it to be yours."
Lawrence blinked for a minute, staring at Ivy in pure shock. Adam let out a breath, muttering, "Fiesty" under his breath.
"Bullshit." Frowned Lawrence simply as if he could wash his hands of the troublesome woman. "Complete bullshit."
Ivy backed off deciding to bide her time a little more, however her decision was becoming clearer and clearer the longer she spoke with the Doctor. Could she allow a mother and her daughter to be murdered to save her and another's neck. Yes, she could.
"Could you finish this?" Asked Adam, picking up on Ivy's words as she leaning against the dirty pipes.
She met Adam's eyes, he did not seem scared or worried at all. He completely trusted her, that she would side with him in the end, he still had that gleam of admiration in his eyes. "No, of course not." She lied and Adam's eyes flickered with some unknown emotion, Lawrence made a noise of jubilation in the corner.
"Who was it?" Lawrence asked Adam.
Adam blinked, "Who was what?"
"The person who paid you to follow me? Who was it?" Elaborated Lawrence as if he was conducting an interview.
"He calls himself Bob and he gives me the money up front. Two hundred bucks a night." Replied Adam matter of factly. Ivy got the impression that it was the most money Adam had seen in a long time, and people did stupid things when they needed to survive. If Adam had been in possession of a steady income Ivy knew he wouldn't have ever turned to illicit dealings. "If i knew I was gonna end up here I would've asked for a hell of a lot more."
Ivy nodded in agreement, "I would have done anything to avoid this."
"Does that mean you saw what happened to me?" Jumped in Lawrence and Ivy turned to stare at Adam.
"What I saw was you get into your car. That's it. I didn't ask your name, I didn't know who you were. I don't know how I got here, I don't know how you got here. I just took the shots and went straight home to develop them."
"You don't know anything about how I got here?" Chipped in Ivy and Adam paused in the middle of his increasingly bored voice.
"No I haven't got a clue about what happened to you. I didn't see you after I took that photo of you." Said Adam in befuddlement.
"Yeah that's what I was thinking, but at least you two know how you were... uh kidnapped." Ivy explained as both men looked at her, "I haven't got a clue who or what put me in here?"
"You don't remember some kinda pig masked guy coming at you?" Asked Adam gently.
"Yeah I do." Confirmed Lawrence quickly and Adam sent him a scathing look.
"No I do not remember a single thing." Ivy frowned her eyes glistening a little in fear, she got to her feet and rubbed her arms up and down.
"Well it took an electric shock for me to remember," Reminded Adam kindly and Ivy nodded grimly.
"Want me to knock you out and see if anything happens?" He joked darkly moving towards a broken piece of the toilet.
"Ha no thank you Adam." Ivy answered quickly, just in case he made a sudden move. "I just wish I knew about the gap between meeting you and waking up here."
"Well the next thing I know was me being chained to a pipe..." Continued Adam gesturing to the pipe he was still chained to, "In some pre-historic bathroom...staring at the guy I've been taking shots of all night and the girl who nearly shoved me to the ground earlier."
Ivy looked away guiltily again, smiling at Adam's sense of humour and Adam patted her on the shoulder. "Clearly, whoever paid you to take pictures of me is the one who put us here." Interrupted Lawrence as he speculated wildly, trying to figure out who had put them all in this rank bathroom.
"We know who put us here, Jigsaw." Said Ivy slowly, as if speaking to a mental patient.
"Well done Sherlock Holmes, I mean the identity of Jigsaw. Who's behind the damn camera over there."
Adam followed Gordon and Ivy's gaze over to the glaring red light on the camera behind the plastic by the grimy windows. "Maybe." He murmured mulling over the Doctor's though pattern.
"What do you mean maybe? Of course it is." Confirmed Gordon, Ivy rolled her eyes to the ceiling and wished she hadn't. There was a large spider hanging over by the Doctor's side of the bathroom. A rush of nerves ran through her and she made an instinctive step closer to Adam. Spiders had always been one of the things she couldn't stand. She was so bad with the arachnids that no matter the size, she had to scream for someone to get rid of it for her and avoid the room as if it was going to explode till they did. "What did he look like?" Asked Gordon, he seemed to have hit some kind of stride.
"He was just a guy." Said Adam unhelpfully. Ivy, eyes avoiding the giant spider lurking above them all was being to wonder why the identity of Jigsaw wasn't of the upmost importance. If the lying Doctor was able to figure out just who Jigsaw was, then they could put the maniac behind bars, they could stop the onslaught of murders that were happening all over New York, they could escape from this ghastly bathroom. It was another moment of self comprehension for Ivy as she thought through her lack of interest in what Lawrence and Adam were currently discussing. Every thought she had always came back to her survival, all she wanted was to escape the miserable bathroom she was trapped in. She could fully well understand the want to survive above anything else and ironically enough, like jigsaw pieces slotting together; Ivy knew that if she could toss in her budding career, move to some far away country and never speak of Jigsaw again she would do it in a heartbeat. She no longer gave a shit about who Jigsaw was, as long as she got out of this stinking bathroom with the deadly spider swinging about on its thin web.
"Oh for fuck's sake! I give up!" Cried Lawrence, jolting Ivy from her thoughts as he went to lean against some piping.
"He's a tall, black guy. He's got a scar round his neck, okay?" Adam informed not understanding at all why this guy was so important. Ivy's mind caught up to speed at the same time as Lawrence's. He turned back around and the two made eye contact.
"Tapp." Lawrence mused.
"Detective Tapp." Ivy nodded once, confirming that they were on the same wave link.
"Woah the guy who paid me to take these photos was not a cop." Adam tried to keep the weird tone out of his voice as if Lawrence and Ivy were both going insane in the bathroom.
"No no no, remember what I said earlier Adam. He was discharged from the police force." Ivy reminded Adam and a look of comprehension dawned on his youthful face, still dirty from the bathroom's grime and some unusual white powder that looked like cocaine despite Ivy knowing there was no possibility. "He broke down after his partner was killed. But why would he want Adam to take photos of you?"
Lawrence glared at the camera again, seemingly convinced that Tapp had a link to Jigsaw, "Well, just because he was fired doesn't mean he didn't stop harassing me. The guy became obsessed."
Ivy raised an eyebrow at Lawrence's words and tried to catch Adam's eyes again. Adam however was focused on Lawrence as the Doctor carried on, "He convinced himself I must have somehow been involved with the murders..."
"You damn well might be..." She let the words ring clear in the bathroom.
Gordon fixated his eyes on her, as if he could incinerate her with those baby blue eyes, "You just love those one liners don't you? Didn't happen to snag the files on me did you?" He retorted causing Ivy to lapse into silence and turned his rant back to Adam. "And you helped him. You took money from him to invade my privacy. How could you do that?"
"Call it my need to eat." Defended Adam, holding his hands up as if Lawrence was apprehending him at gun point.
"Right." Lawrence was nodding sarcastically at the photographer, pointing a finger accusingly at him. "You know what Ivy?" Lawrence quickly wheeled back round to Ivy who had edged away from Adam now. "He's not a victim of this game, despite what that tape of your may say... he's a part of it."
Ivy surveyed Adam cooly over her folded arms, but she didn't say a word to accuse or defend Adam.
"Really? Obviously this cop thinks you're the one behind it all." Challenged Adam, Ivy smirked as the two men squared off against each other, like a showdown in the old western films.
"I told you, he's not a cop." Snarled Lawrence his voice and temper rising.
"Not a cop when it suits you." Piped up Ivy and both men sent her a glare as if warning her to stay out of their heated argument.
"He's not a cop." Repeated Lawrence slowly still addressing Adam as if Ivy hadn't spoken, "He's a bottom feeder. Just like you."
"What are you more pissed off about? That I took some shots of you or that I took some shots while you were cheating on your wife?"
"I DID NOT CHEAT ON HER!" Screamed Lawrence so harshly his voice sounded a little hoarse.
"Adam!" Ivy shouted as the hurt shone in Lawrence's eyes. Adam has hit way below the belt.
Adam trucked on ignoring Ivy's warnings and the blaze in Lawrence's eyes, "Why do you care what I think anyway? I don't give a crap if you covered yourself in peanut butter and had a fifteen hooker gang-bang."
If it had been any other moment but then Ivy would have doubled over in stitches, Adam's sense of humour was clearly one of the things she liked about him. But looking at the loathing and misery etched into the lines of Lawrence Gordon's face she mutely shook her head. Adam realising how coarse he had been backed off, as did Ivy as Lawrence sank onto the floor staring again at the photo of his bound wife and child. "How did I get here?" He asked no one in particular, Ivy stared at him. His irises were bigger than usual and she could see the blue with much more clarity than before. His eyebrows were knitted together and he had the expression of a lost child. "I had everything in order. My whole life was in perfect order."
Ivy could not pretend she wasn't beginning to get concerned about the Doctor's sanity levels. She glanced to Adam who had gone back to looking guiltily over his photos but he was not her concern. She was back to square one again, Lawrence when he was yelling and accusing everyone left, right and centre was a lot easier to imagine killing than the Lawrence who was sprawled across the dirty floor, his eyes looking haunted. It also seemed like she would be the one to make the final decision in the end as neither of the men had made even the slightest move to try and hurt her. But they don't know about the shocks, or the knife, she thought wryly.
"Hey, was there someone else at your house last night? Besides your wife and daughter?" Asked Adam's voice from his usual spot in the bathroom, he was inspecting one of the photos with keen interest.
"No."
"Well, there's someone here."
Lawrence picked up the same photo that Adam was holding and stared at it in mild surprise. "I know him. Zep!"
"Bless you." Said Ivy from the corner in surprise.
"No his name is Zep. He's an orderly in my hospital." Explained Lawrence, Ivy snorted at the bizarre name and so did Adam. "You perverted little psychopath!" Cried Lawrence all of sudden, instantly shutting the other two up as Lawrence got to his feet and began screaming at the camera, convinced that the Zep man was the Jigsaw killer holding them all hostage. "I'm gonna take great pleasure in seeing you pay for this! You bastard! Fuck!" Lawrence's eyes had lost all traces of sanity, there was a film dulling the usual sharp shine as he yelled obscenities at the faceless camera. But Adam's look of horror distracted Ivy as he pointed a shaking finger up towards the clock.
"Look. We're out of time."
Heh heh, evil cliffhanger! I really will try and update more regularly as the whole thing is written!
