A/N: Well I didn't want to leave you guys hanging for too long after last chapter. I may be a bit busier than normal soon so I don't know where I'll be time wise to get this going. I have a job offer on the table I accepted but the position doesn't start for another month. In the mean time I have two more interviews that may start a lot sooner and would mean I will have a lot less free time. I am also applying for grad school and going to be taking my GRE's soon so erg on that note onto the chapter.
Chapter 9: Just Walk Away
"Quit screwin around Chiba." Haruka commented lightly before withdrawing her gun from the hole she had created in Tiger Eye's chest with her giant .50 caliber hand gun. With a satisfied look crossing her face the hardened agent shook her gun lightly to dislodge some of the blood.
Tiger's eye stared down at the giant hole in his chest. He didn't even feel the pain and he knew that meant his body was dying. The blood flowing down his chest confirmed this if the lack of pain didn't. His eyes started to glass over as he took one last look at the man he had been about to kill. The agent below him was staring back at him, Mamoru's face mirroring the surprise that Tiger's eye's face held. Just a moment ago their roles had been reserved and it should have been Mamoru bleeding out. With a final gasp of breath Tiger's eye fell on top of Mamoru like a puppet that suddenly had its strings cut.
It took a few seconds for his brain to reboot but Mamoru suddenly came to the realization he was alive…he was alive and in massive pain. The body on top of him was pressing down on the knife still stuck into his shoulder. Mamoru got his hands under the body and with a heave he rolled the dead body off of him and to the side. "Thanks Haruka I thought I was a dead man."
"You would have been…luckily I was in the area tailing this guy when Kunzite put out the alert." Haruka jerked her thumb at the dead body on the floor. "Now get yourself together Mamoru, this is just the first wave. We need to get out before their second group comes snooping around to find out why the first group just went silent." Without any warning Haruka leaned down and grasped the handle of the knife before pulling it out in one solid yank causing Mamoru to scream in pain.
Mamoru gasped out in ragged drawn out breathes as he attempted not to faint from the pain. He glanced down at the knife wound as best he could and thought he was going to be sick at the sight. Blood was now oozing freely out of the wound and to make it worse it hurt like a bitch. He managed to pull himself to his feet and grab the shotgun that had slide under the nearby table. After another moment he managed to catch his breath fully. "Some warning next time?"
"You wouldn't have agreed with it. So I decided to cut out your initial bitching and just do it." Haruka commented lightly before she stepped out of the kitchen and moved over to the broken down front door. After a quick look around outside she saw that the neighbors were starting to poke their heads out from all the gun fire and the police lights below. Luckily the idiots had brought the police so most people would assume the cops were already on the scene but she could count on a nosey old lady calling the police to find out what was going on. That of course would send the police and SWAT hightailing it to their location to find out what the hell was going on. She turned back to Mamoru with a slight roll of her eyes. He was still pressing his hand against his open wound. "Chiba…I already told you to quit screwin around. Now go get Usagi so we can get out of here. We won't be clear for long."
"I'm sorry I'm not going fast enough for you Tenou…I'm still kinda recovering from a near death experience and oh yeah! Thanks to you I have a gapping open knife wound!" Mamoru responded with a slight edge to his voice. He rarely got along with Tenou hence why they rarely worked together even though they were on the same squad. They maintained a professional relationship and he let Michiru handle most of Tenou's debriefings.
"I'm fairly certain I've made it quite clear that I don't care." Haruka responded in a bored tone. She really didn't have time for Mamoru's bullshit. The man was great at what he did but he was never going to be her friend and she had made it quite clear she was in no mood for his emotional bullshit of talking about feelings and coming to an understanding about the reason she acted the way she did was because of some repressed need to impress her father. She really just didn't give a shit and his insistence to the contrary just pissed her off more. "I'll watch the door now get moving!"
Mamoru walked back towards Usagi's door with a sour look on his face. He was a criminal psychologist not a weapons expert like Haruka. Every time he was in the field she was always there to make critical remarks of everything he did. Of course any time he offered her advice or offered his thoughts she didn't care. Tell her how to crack a man in interrogation with a word or two and she went off on him about the old fashioned way.
With one last sigh of defeat he decided to stop ruminating over his bad luck of being saved by Haruka. He went back to the door to his room and rapped on the door before speaking loud enough that he was sure Usagi could hear him. "Usagi…the toga party is over. Please unlock the door we gotta go!"
Hotaru almost gasped the moment she heard Mamoru's voice. The explosions and gunshots from earlier had scared her and she wasn't sure if Mamoru would make it back. She remembered enough from Usagi before the girl retreated away from consciousness that Mamoru had told her that code phrase. "Hold on Doctor, I'm coming!" She called out before she army crawled from under the bed. Once she was free she rushed to the door and quickly undid the locks from her side before throwing open the door. She gasped at the sight on the other side of the door.
"Oh Doctor Chiba! You're hurt!" She immediately started to put her hands on the wound and squeaked a little when he grunted in pain. She immediately drew her hands away. "Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't think it was that bad! Let me get something for it."
Mamoru reached out with his free hand and grabbed Hotaru's arm, effectively stopping the girl from disappearing from sight. "It's alright…Hotaru." He could tell from her slightly higher vocal tone that Hotaru had taken over. Perhaps she hadn't recovered nearly as much as he thought she had. Usagi hadn't fallen into another personality for weeks but unfortunately this event may have caused her enough stress to bring the personality of Hotaru out. He just counted himself lucky that the violent one hadn't popped up instead. "We've got to go. I'll try to get anything of yours back later but more people will be coming soon."
Hotaru nodded hesitantly and let Mamoru guide her out of the bedroom. She whispered softly to the man that had been the only real constant since Ami had been taken off of her case. "I trust you."
With a slight nod, Mamoru made his way back to Haruka. His tactical shotgun slung over his shoulder and Hotaru following along behind him. "Alright Haruka…what is our exit?"
"My car of course." Haruka chuckled a little. "I'm going to go bring the car around. Wait here and come right down when you see me the next team will be here any minute." With that Haruka leaned out once more to scan for threats before deeming the area was safe from any immediate threats. The limber woman disappeared down the stairs taking them two at a time in her rush.
"Are we going to be ok?" Hotaru tentatively asked.
Mamoru made a small nod before unslinging the shotgun from behind his back and taking a few shells out of his pants pocket. Careful to make sure the shells were loaded in the right way, Mamoru worked to get the weapon fully loaded again. It was best to expect the worst after the attack they just survived. "I won't let anything happen to you Hotaru."
Hotaru smiled at Mamoru before she decided to ask the question on her mind. "What are we going to do now though? I don't want to come back here and I don't want to go back to the hospital." She shivered slightly at the thought. The further away she was from Mamoru the closer Seiya would get to her. If she had any choice in the manner she'd stay with Mamoru forever, she always felt so safe with him nearby.
"We're going to go back to our headquarters and then go to another safe house." Mamoru answered the girl. He glanced outside to see if Tenou was out front yet but unfortunately she was still nowhere to be found. He could only hope that nothing was holding the woman up.
"When will it all be over Doctor Chiba…I'm so tired of being scared…I just want it to be over." Hotaru said softly.
"Soon Hotaru…soon." Mamoru responded with a sad smile. If he could make it all go away he would but unfortunately they had just learned of Seiya's sick little secret. It would take some time for Michiru to uncover more information about Seiya and his involvement with the Black Moon Circus. The only other way would be if he could reach Usagi…and perhaps there was hope. She was opening up right before the raid occurred. He was startled from his musing by Minako's voice.
"HEY! Mamoru! Usagi! What are you guys doing with the door wide open?" Minako called with a laugh from the sidewalk below.
"Shit…" Mamoru muttered. Looks like they'd be taking her with them because he couldn't risk anyone finding her and deciding to use her to get to Usagi not to mention the blonde was like a bulldog. Once something caught her interest the secret would be ferretted out one way or another. The moment she saw the state of his apartment and the knife wound not to mention the shotgun she wouldn't stop until she knew everything. "Why me?" He muttered darkly.
Hotaru couldn't help but let out a giggle at the predicament she knew Mamoru just found himself in. "She was bound to find out sooner or later. She is a lot smarter than most people give her credit for."
"I know." Mamoru muttered in response. The girl had the air head act perfected. It was something you didn't notice right away but Minako would get this look in her eyes when she was digging for information purposefully. It was this hard look that didn't belong on her face and it was only there briefly but when you realized it was there the first time it was easier to pick up. Kunzite had pointed it…reluctantly since it meant his cover was in jeopardy since the girl was dissecting all of his responses. Mamoru was saved for the moment though when Haruka pulled around in a black Ford Explorer which was odd since she normally drove her sports car no matter what the occasion…odd until he saw the broken driver's side window. Great add grand theft auto to the list of possible crimes committed tonight FBI or not.
"Let's get this over with." Mamoru muttered to Hotaru before slinging the shotgun over his shoulder again and grabbing the young girl's hand. He called out to Minako with only a hint of defeat entering his tone. "Minako! Get in that Explorer that just pulled up behind you!" Without waiting for a response he led Hotaru down the stairs as fast as they safely could. All the while he scanned the area. The outside stairway left them completely exposed but there was no other way down. They were of course confronted by Minako the moment the blonde haired woman saw the condition the two of them were in but it was hard to miss Mamoru's knife wound and shotgun along with the body armor over Hotaru's chest.
"What the hell is going on?" Minako practically screamed upon seeing her cousin wearing a bullet proof vest. Her eyebrows disappeared up into her bangs when she saw Doctor Chiba totting around with a shotgun and a visible wound in his shoulder.
"Get in the car Minako." Mamoru directed as he passed by the blonde with Hotaru in tow.
"Where the hell do you think you're going? I'm not done talking to you!" Minako demanded as she turned around with a frustrated growl. She wanted to know where the hell her cousin was going and what Mamoru was doing with a gun not to mention the cop cars. "What are the police doing here?" She pointed at the cop cars parked nearby with no officers in them but their lights still flashing.
"Get the hell in the car, blondie!" Tenou growled out in annoyance. If Mamoru was so insistent on getting this girl to join them then she needed to get on board and shut up.
"My name is Minako! Not Blondie!" Minako jutted a finger out at Tenou. "I don't know who you are but you've got an attitude problem!"
Mamoru cut Minako's diatribe off by physically grabbing her and throwing her in the back seat with Usagi. He was about to go around to the front when he heard the screeching of tires coming around the corner. A large Suburban SUV came into view and the headlights momentarily blinded him. With a grunt he threw himself into the back seat and threw the door closed.
Tenou didn't need to be told twice to get moving she saw the large vehicle in her review mirror. Without checking on her passengers to make sure they were secured she put the petal to the metal and with a vicious jerk the Explorer took off with a hitch as she essentially skipped past 2nd gear and into 3rd. "Mamoru I hope to hell you are a decent shot with that penis replacement of yours. I need you into the back and dissuade them from following."
"It's a point and click interface…pretty sure I can hit them." Mamoru responded without making a comment about Haruka's rather crude imagery of his shotgun. It was normally just easier not to comment and incite the angry blonde. "Just don't kill me...I don't have a seatbelt on back here."
"Well you better hold on real tight then." Tenou commented lightly while shooting a vicious grin up at the review mirror before whipping the car onto the main road in a hair point turn that almost sent the passengers in the back tumbling over each other as the SUV briefly teetered onto two wheels.
The entire car shook when the car landed back on all four wheels again and sent the passengers in the back into a small heap. Mamoru was the first one that gained his bearings again and shot an apologetic look at Hotaru and Minako before he quickly threw himself over the bench seat into the back hatch.
Minako struggled back into her seat before helping her cousin back into a seat and then proceeded to buckle both of them into the seats. She half debated the intelligence of her maneuver the way this crazy lady was driving. What she did know was that she wanted answers and she wanted them now. "Doctor Chiba I want to know why the hell we are being pursued and what the hell you are doing with a gun!?"
"Would you believe that I'm an FBI agent assigned to Usagi to protect her until we can find the link between Seiya and a criminal syndicate that deals in human trafficking and drugs?" Mamoru asked Minako. He didn't wait for an answer before he put his feet against the glass of the hatch before he viciously started to kick the glass out so he could use his shot gun effectively.
"Of course not! That's insane!" Minako growled before whipping her cell phone out. "I'm calling the police. This is ridiculous. I don't know what you've gotten poor Usa mixed up in but you can let us both out right now!"
Without waiting for an answer Minako dialed in 911 and a moment later was connected. "Yes, police. I am being kidnapped with my cou-."
Without looking back, Haruka reached back and grabbed the cell phone out of Minako's hand before casually tossing it out the window. She glared at the girl through the review mirror. "Sit down and shut up if you don't want me to kill you, you little brat." She tuned out Minako's angry rant and concentrated on the road again and got the car up to speed again before blasting through a red light. She guided the car around a few cars that stopped half way into the intersection. A grim smile came to her face when she saw the Suburban slam into one of the cars and spun out. Clearly the driver was inferior to her. The problem though was that three unmarked cars all white appeared from behind the traffic collision and took over the pursuit…perhaps things were not going to be that easy.
"Haruka we got incoming!" Mamoru yelled and with one final heave he kicked the now cracked and split back window out of its sill. The window disappeared with a clatter and suddenly wind was whipping through the car from the giant air hole in the back along with the broken driver's side window creating a cold air current.
"You people are insane!" Minako yelled over the wind. She shrieked a little at the sudden discharge of Mamoru's shotgun and threw herself onto Usagi half to protect her cousin and half as comfort. "Don't worry we'll get through this."
For her part Hotaru was quite calm about the situation surprisingly since one would think she would be freaking out. She knew though that Mamoru would get them out of this mess, he had promised after all. In fact she was actually enjoying the wild ride. A soft smile rested on her face. "Don't worry Minako, Doctor Chiba promised to keep us safe."
In response Minako just groaned and looked up for a moment before throwing her head back down with a squeak of fright.
Haruka grimaced slightly when a shard of glass cut into her cheek from a bullet that shattered her driver's side mirror. A quick glance confirmed that it was slagged. She yelled back at Mamoru in annoyance. "Keep them busy Chiba, they just slagged my mirror and you know how I hate turning my head while I drive!" With a glance at the passenger side mirror a grin cut across her face…idiot. She could see one of the white cars was trying to pass her on the right to cut her off before she could get on the highway. "Hang on!" She yelled before jerking the wheel quickly to ram the smaller vehicle.
"What the hell!" Mamoru yelled out when the car suddenly jerked to the side before it was bounced back into its original lane. Metal screamed in protest from the car on car contact and the occupants inside were treated to what it felt like to be in a bouncy castle full of objects. Cursing under his breath, Mamoru managed to right himself and raised his shotgun again to rest on the busted out sill of the car. He had to twist his body slightly to get comfortable but once he set himself up he lined up his first shot. The car that Haruka had slammed into was still recovering but the other two weren't taking any chances and were closing fast.
With a pull of the trigger a slug unloaded into the car in front of them but the shell didn't even go through the windshield. Instead it left an indent and some spider web cracks. Shit that wasn't good. "Haruka I don't think these are the cops…they have bullet proof glass."
"No shit." Haruka commented with little concern. "Well why don't you give them one hell of a repair bill!"
"Your input is so helpful." Mamoru responded without pausing he expelled the used shell with a pump and then fired another round at the car. This time he aimed for the engine. He was rewarded by seeing the car back off a little.
"In case you haven't noticed I'm busy driving here!" Tenou responded with a growl. In an attempt to lose the tails she squeezed the explorer in between two large trucks. Unfortunately the fit was so tight that it took her slagged mirror and her remaining mirror off from the squeeze. With a scream of metal the explorer popped out the other side and she shifted the car into fourth gear again and the car took off with a jerk.
Mamoru sighed a little in relief from making it through that one. Driving with Tenou was just asking for the reaper to take you from the world but she was a fantastic driver…if not completely reckless. It appeared that they had lost their tails in that one. He held on tight when Haruka suddenly turned off at the next exit and peeled the car to the right towards their headquarters.
For her part Tenou kept up the speed just in case her tails had somehow made it through her little obstacle. The drivers in the other vehicles must have had some kind of self preservation because none of them had come through the gap and she was well off the highway by the time they got around the trucks. She didn't take any chances though and double tapped the ear piece she was wearing to communicate with Kunzite. "Kunzite open the bay door I'm coming in hot."
After a brief acknowledgement she whipped the beaten up car into an alleyway and drove straight towards a wall that started to split down the middle and open to either side. Haruka applied the brakes hard and wrestled with the car's anti-lock brake system as she brought the car in to the bay and screamed to a halt. Not a moment after her tailgate had cleared the doors they started to close again.
Mamoru was the first one out. He opened the back lift gate and half climbed half slid out…a green look on his face. "I think I'm going to be sick."
"You're fine." Haruka commented with a smirk as she pulled herself out of the car.
Kunzite just stared at the state of the car that Haruka drove in with a blank look. The side of the car he could see had lost its driver's side mirror, the suspension was sagging, most of the paint was gone, the driver's window was smashed open, and the tail lights were broken. "Must you always break your toys…Haruka…was this really necessary?"
"Course it was." Haruka answered hotly before taking off towards the door to the operations room. "I've gotta go report to Michiru…pretty sure there is an all points bulletin out for that car may wanna inform the boss man so he can deal with it." With that she was gone.
Kunzite turned to Mamoru with a slightly raised eyebrow at the knife wound that at this point had more or less sealed on its own. "So have an exciting drive with Tenou?" He asked dryly.
"You could say that." Mamoru muttered as he propped himself up against the ruined explorer.
Their conversation was interrupted by Minako and Hotaru stumbling out of the driver's side rear passenger door since the right side had been crushed when Haruka had bumped the pursuing car. The moment Minako righted herself she turned to Mamoru and was about to start yelling at him when she caught sight of Kunzite.
"What the hell is teddy bear doing here!?" Minako half yelled and half asked while pointing at the giant of a man.
"New code name, Kunzite?" Mamoru managed to find his good humor and chuckled at his friend's misfortune.
"Hn." Kunzite didn't dignify the blonde with a response and instead turned back to Mamoru. "I'm not going to clean up your little unfortunate messes. I'll be in operations when you're done getting yelled at." With that Kunzite turned to leave.
"Traitor!" Mamoru called out.
"Oh no you don't!" Minako had her bearings again and she managed to jump forward before the silver haired man disappeared. "No one is leaving until I get my answers! Now what the hell is going on here?"
A/N: I figure this is a good place to end it. Next chapter will be a lot of explaining of course by Kunzite, Mamoru and the rest of the team. I hope you guys are enjoying my portrayal of Haruka…she is fast becoming one of my favorites to write just because she doesn't care. I will probably touch base with Seiya and get the Black Moon Circus involved to reveal a little more of that plot. Perhaps add in the other two brothers so expect a little less action and more talking next chapter. Please read and review. Thanks again for those that have stuck with this story for the almost decade long wait. I hope this makes up for it at least a little. Thanks again to: EBFR: I will clear up the Rini situation next chapter, Galaxy Princess: glad you are enjoying and there will be some more mystery next chapter but we will also finally be getting some questions answered, TropicalRemix: I hope the outcome was acceptable to you, I wouldn't kill Mamoru at least not in this story. And to everyone else thanks for reading.
