A/N - So . . . here it is. The final chapter. WOW. I can't believe I've actually made it here. Now, don't worry, I WILL be posting an Epilogue very soon, but this is the last official chapter. I still can't rap my mind around that.
I know this is going to sound really weird, but I would like to give glory to God for giving me a talent and a passion for writing, and the tools to write with. He is my Savior, and I owe him my life, so the least I can do is give him a little shoutout on some fanfiction I wrote.
As always I love reviews, and I just wanted to let you all know I'm considering entering this story into the fanfiction contest. Do you guys think I should?
Thank you ALL for your continued support. I love you guys.
After Jeremy had explained what exactly "being the anchor" meant, he told them how they would have to do the spell. He explained that with three doppelgangers, assuming that Katherine would help, and the power of the full moon that night, all they would need was a witch to do the spell.
"I think I know someone who can help." Elena had said.
The room had nodded with agreement and there was a silence before Damon had spoke up. "What about my brother?"
No one said anything.
Damon looked worried. "I would go find him myself, but I can't go anywhere right now. Without Bonnie around to make me a ring, I'm trapped here until Elena gets back with her witch. Stefan can't wait that long. He could tear through half the town by then."
Caroline had looked around the room. "I'll go." She said, still thinking it through in her head, but growing more and more sure it had to be her. "After he turned, I was the one who helped him cope with being a vampire. If any of us can get through to him, I think it's me."
The more she had thought about it, the more sure she was of this. She knew Stefan had trusted her, and he appreciated her level-headedness. It was obvious now that Stefan was all or nothing, at least as far as being a vampire was concerned. He needed someone who could help him gain control, instead of letting it control him.
So as soon as the meeting was over, she had speed off. If she were a murderous vampire without her humanity, and with a trail of bodies, where would she be?
She searched half the town before she found him, zipping from one public building to the next. She was right to assume he wasn't friendly enough to get invited in anywhere at the moment. He was in a foreclosure at the edge of town.
The moment she stepped into the house, she knew she was in the right spot. If the bodies piled on the ground didn't give it away, then the smell would have. It stunk like rot and rust, a grotesque mixture of decaying bodies and dried blood.
"Stefan?" She called. "I know you're here. I just want to talk."
He stepped out from the kitchen into the living room to her right. "Why are you here?" He asked.
She ran at him and tackled him with a hug. Stefan didn't seem to know what to do, so he didn't do anything. "Oh Stefan!" She cried. "I've missed you!"
He backed away and glared down at her. "I've been gone for a day."
She bit her bottom lip and let the tears she had been holding back since the night before finally flow. "I know. But so much has happened, and I just, I didn't know what to do."
Stefan didn't say anything, so Caroline continued. "I mean, Damon died last night, and then we discovered that Bonnie had died and is now a ghost that only Jeremy can see, and then Matt came and told me you had flipped your switch on your humanity, of course he didn't use those words, because he didn't know what it meant that you were killing without remorse, but I did, and then I told him everything, and- and he,"
Caroline looked up into Stefan's eyes. "Stefan," She said, her voice breaking. "I need you. Matt doesn't want anything to do with me, and for good reason, I mean, I did kill his sister." She Implored Stefan with her eyes. "I need your help. I don't know what to do. I can't do this on my own. Please."
This whole time, Stefan had been watching her from an arm's length, his face still void of any emotion, but with her final plea, she saw something flicker in him. She moved closer, her tears still streaming down her face. "Stefan, please, I need you."
He blinked a few times, and his face contorted. He was fighting an inner battle. Caroline didn't stop. "Come on, Stefan. You can't hide from your pain forever. Someday, you will have to face it. Why not face it now with me? I can help you. I will be there for you, just like I know you will be there for me. Just like I was there for you, when you were first turned. Come back to me."
Finally, Stefan looked up at her, his eyes suddenly clear. For a terrifying moment, Caroline thought he had decided to keep his emotions off. She couldn't read any emotion in his face.
And then he broke. In moments, he was on the floor, sobbing. Caroline sank down to the floor to join him and wrapped her arms around him. Together, they stayed like that. They sat on the bloodstained hardwood floors of a foreclosure at the edge of town, crying together, and comforting each other without words.
Matt had been busing tables all day. After the truth bomb that had been dropped on him by his, now ex-girlfriend, he had come to the only place he could take his mind off of everything, and just work. The Mystic Grill.
It was late afternoon, now, and the Grill was empty except for a few day-drinkers and one typical american family of four, who looked like they were in the middle of a long road trip, and somewhat lost. Matt refilled one of the men at the bar's drink, and the man proceeded to swallow it in one gulp.
The door flew open. An angry blonde stormed into the grille and plopped herself down at the bar. She ordered a drink and huffed loudly.
Matt couldn't help himself, he needed a distraction from his own thoughts, and this girl seemed to be the perfect opportunity to do just that. He said, "What's got you so riled up?"
She looked up sharply at him, giving him a once over. "My family."
Matt nodded slowly, he knew all about difficult families. "Ahhh." He said. "I gotcha."
She looked up at him again, her emotions unreadable, before she seemed to come to a decision, and dropped her guard. "My brother thinks he's the rightful ruler of the world." She began to explain. "And then some idiots decided they were going to try and stop him. So of course, I got stuck in the crossfire. Then, my other brother got fed up with him, and he decided to indefinitely take him out while he was down."
Matt nodded, not really following her story, but understanding her pain. "My mother can't keep a job or a guy, so I had to get a job here just to pay to keep me and my sister alive."
"Hey Matt," She said. Matt wondered for a moment how she knew his name, and then he remembered his name tag. "Do you have any plans tonight?"
He regarded her curiously. "No." He said finally. "Why?"
"Would you like to go out with me? It doesn't have to mean much. I just need something to get my mind off of the rest of my life."
Matt hesitated. Despite the fact that he had just broken up with Caroline, it didn't feel that way. They had been drifting apart for a while now, and he also wanted something to take his mind off of the massive information dump she had giveing him. Somewhat to his own surprise, Matt found himself answering her, "That sounds good."
She smiled at him and then stood up, leaving her payment and a tip on the bar. "Cool. So, I'll meet you here at 7?"
He shrugged. "Fine with me." He watched as she turned to leave. As she reached the door, he called out, "Hey, wait!" She swirled to face him as he stepped out from behind the bar. "I never got your name."
Her smile grew and she answered, "Rebekah. Rebekah Mikaelson."
I found him.
The text message lit up Elena's phone. Elena sighed with relief. That was good news, and she had needed some good news.
And he's back. He flipped it back on.
Elena almost jumped for joy. This was more than she was hoping for. She began typing a reply, but her phone buzzed again, this time it was different number.
I'm almost there. Do you have the other two?
Elena switched over to the new text message thread. They are on their way.
Elena had called Katherine and Max and asked them to come back to the Salvatore Mansion, for the spell. "We need mystical power, and having three doppelgangers, as well as the full moon will almost definitely be enough." Max was enthusiastic to help, but Katherine had taken more convincing. She had finally agreed to help when Elena promised never to bother her again.
A few minutes later, once Katherine and Max were both back at the mansion waiting with Jeremy and Damon, Elena's witch arrived. She walked in, not in the least intimidated by walking into a house full of vampires.
She broke into a huge smile the moment she saw Elena. "Hey girlfriend!" She rushed over and gave her friend a hug before noticing all the other people in the room. She glanced at Max and Katherine, and then back at Elena. "Wow. When you said doppelganger, you meant it. You guys really are identical."
Elena couldn't help but laugh at her friend's amazement. Finally, she turned to her friends. "Everyone, this is my witch friend, Charlotta Irena. I think she might be some distant relative of Bonnie's. They are both descended from my old friend Ruby. Charlotta, this is Lexi, Jeremy, Damon, and-"
"Wait." Charlotta cut her off. "Let me guess." She pointed towards Max. "Katherine?"
Max smiled shyly and shook her head. "Actually, I'm Max."
This seemed to be Katherine's last straw. She rolled her eyes. "Actually, I'm Katherine. Now, can we please get this spell over with so that I can go and never be bothered with any of you again?"
Charlotta looked disappointed but nodded. She turned to Elena and whispered, "Is she always like this?"
Elena shrugged. "Has been for the last 150 years."
Katherine glared. "You know I can hear you, right?"
Charlotta didn't seem bothered by this. She surveyed the group and then swung the bag she was carrying off her shoulder, pulling out some candles and other witchy things. "Okay then, let's get this party started." She looked up at Jeremy. "I will need some type of talisman. Something that was special to Bonnie."
Jeremy nodded and handed her an old looking book from his own bag. "Her grimoire."
Charlotta nodded approvingly. "Very good. You came prepared." She paused and studied Jeremy before breaking into another huge grin. They were quickly becoming her signature move. "I like you. You're Bonnie's boyfriend right?"
"I . . ." Jeremy was at a loss for words. "Well, I mean, I don't know if I'd go so far as to call myself . . . I mean, yes. I'm her boyfriend."
Charlotta continued grinning at him, a laugh behind her eyes. "Okay then, boyfriend. I heard you can talk to her, is that true?"
He nodded.
"Okay, then. Tell her I don't know what this spell is going to do to here. I don't know the risks, but it certainly isn't safe. Does she still want to follow through with this?"
Jeremy turned to an empty space beside him, listening, before cracking a smile and turning back to Charlotta. "She says, she's already dead, how much worse could it get? She's in."
"Okay. Doppelgangers, over here. The rest of you, please set up these candles around the room." Each person did as they were asked. Once all the candles were set up, Lexi, Damon, and Jeremy stepped to the side of the room to stay out of the way. The doppelgangers gathered around the table where Bonnie's grimoire was laid out.
Charlotta closed her eyes, recited a spell under her breath, and candles around the room lit themselves. She pulled a knife out of her bag and looked at each identical face in turn. "I need a little of each of your blood. That, and the power of the full moon over our heads right now should give me enough power to complete the spell." They all nodded.
She handed the knife over to Elena, who stabbed the palm of her hand and let the blood drip onto the pages of the book. Katherine and Max did the same.
Then, Charlotta started chanting. She repeated the same phrase over and over. A wind whipped around the room and the flames of the candles leaped higher and higher, growing in strength as her words grew louder.
She continued chanting and the three pools of blood drew a diagram on the pages of the book, uniting.
Abruptly, Charlotta stopped and the room was silent. And then, "Bonnie?"
Caroline stood at the door, Stefan standing behind her, covered in blood. Caroline rushed into the room towards her best friend. "Bonnie? Is that really you?"
Bonnie was standing in the middle of the room, all eyes on her. She nodded at Caroline and said through her tears of joy, "Yeah, it's me."
Those three words brought the room back to life. All at once, everyone was rushing towards her, hugging her, and crying her name.
Everyone but Katherine. No one noticed when she slipped out the front door, gone from their lives. Gone from the life of her twin sister, and once best friend, in a moment, never to return. Gone.
