Finding the light
Ep.21
Max POV
Everything was moving incredibly fast. Alec and I had been in the middle of playing with the girls when Gamble called up. He suspected that getting the intel needed got him in trouble but he hadn't heard anything as of yet. I made sure to get in touch with one of Logan's old contacts for re-establishing new I.D.'s so he could leave the country once this was all over with. He said Preston would soon be able to go back to office anyways.
The man whom we had learned woken up was fighting for power back in office. He was glad that the treaty had been dealt with a while ago and that Gamble had for the most part done a good job while he was out of commission. But he wanted to be back in power. Thankfully nothing in power could revoke the treaty so we had our freedom regardless. Gamble, I made sure, would be on the first flight out to Mexico once we laid the charges down.
Till then he had to still be our go-between for the familiars and keep a close eye on White. We didn't need his interference screwing us over. Oh no. We would be taking out their head members and disposing of them for good. Getting geared up it was literally like gearing up for war time, "I'll go and head by Lane's place, get him on the way to where we need him. If this goes well two birds, one bloody stone." Alec nodded his head.
"If you need anything call." I nodded and gave him a quick kiss before leaving off. Just yesterday we were trying to figure everything out, the little details needed to get rid of our enemies and the enemies of the innocent people out there in the world. Getting myself strapped in place I have my cat suit on and weapons in place. Leaving out I left the main center of TC before mounting my bike and taking off to go bait the bastard.
It's about forty five minutes before getting there. Two sector check points with a one picking up people for fake I.D.'s. The cop must be getting off his shift change as he just waived me through, I didn't care I'd take it. Once approaching the fence of the compound I saw the guards there. I saw that they were much more seldom than before. Only one in the tower and one on the ground and as I recall there was double last time.
I get off my bike and once I kicked the stand down and dismounted I blurred inside not wanting to deal with pleasantries. I mean after all the trick was to get Lane so fool headed he'd follow me regardless, but it had to be him alone. However if Devon wanted to tag along by all means dick weed go ahead. I hear a grunt of discomfort from the second hallway down once I blur into the building. The scene was not as I had anticipated.
Lane was literally choking someone to death. Before I could move to react to the display the aorta broke. The sound audible to any X series in the corridor. The transgenic was dead. I stepped forward and with more lighting saw the mangled neck now laying at the bad angle. "Anyone else going to question me? Now I want that bitch found. I want her alive, if that's not possible dead. And I want her corpse brought back here for proof!"
"On another matter if you see 494 with her or nearby kill him! That's an order!" he snapped. I couldn't hold my tongue anymore, "Morbid much?" he looked to me in shock, "Or you know…" I make myself look as if I'm thinking on it, "I know it sounds odd but couldn't you just get up off your lazy ass and do it yourself and NOT rely on your lackeys to do your dirty work for you." He looked to me.
Blind rage was settling in his features, "But I think I know why you consistently use them and not do it yourself." I stated calmly, "Why is that?" he asked, "Because…" I turn my nose up at him in disgust. The tone meant to make him sound weak and pathetic, "You're the same as any other bad guy I've had the pleasure of putting down over the years I've been around." He furrowed his brows.
"A wack, moronic, sadistic dick who gets his junk off by hurtin' innocent people. My guess is the next on that list that you're not sharing with your cronies here are two helpless infants. You're not a leader Lane…you're nothing more than another asshole on a power trip wishing he could be better than his creators and trainers. Only reality is you're nothing more than some punk ass psychopath who feeds on fear to get through his day."
I could tell his buddies were all listening. Time for the punch line, "You're not a leader Lane, you're a ring leader. You're just to blinded by your dwindling status to see it. You know your comrades know it, but you use the fear to prevent them from sayin' it out loud. Cause I'm bettin' you they'd prefer to follow Alec and myself over your overbearing, obnoxiously loud, callus, stupid as hell for not following simple X5 protocol, Ross-wanna-be ass."
Now I waited for his response, "Kill her." I halted them, "Before you do so let him do it. If he's such a grand leader, such a powerful X5 let him take me on. Unless that is of course he's not the supreme transgenic he claims to be. If he has to have you guys do everything then what does that say about his own abilities? His own leadership." I had to get him to come after me, not his cronies. "What do you say? You going to actually do this yourself or are you going to show to them that you can actually take another X5 down that isn't afraid to fight you?"
He responded, "Once I've broken your body you're going to wish that I let them take you out first." I stood my ground. "Let's do this. Meet me at this address. We'll settle this once and for all. No Alec, none of my people, none of yours. Just you and me. Then we'll see how good you really are." I tossed him the address of where we'd be at before walking out backwards. Once out the door I blurred back to the bike and found him getting ready to follow. "Good." I muttered and drove off.
Getting to our destination as I kept listening for Lane to follow I made sure to loose him only a quarter block away. "So is that 'iso-whatever' working?" I asked Dix through the com's I now sported, having put it on once I arrived. I didn't need Lane or anyone else to spot it on my person so I hide it from sight until now. "Yeah, good idea to have the address on that paper. Not even remotely easy to come by though. It's very rare to get the - " I listened to him drone on and on about it. It was definitely some spy tech we managed to get our hands on for tracking.
Very costly though. The black market had some strange gadgets on it. My guess is the government rejected these ideas and the scientist who made them sold them for his own gain instead. However some of those devices had been used over the years to kill innocents. Like when White had that tech creep use the bomb up in the air for the dispersal of killing people as test subjects. This 'iso – whatever' was a good way to use as a homing device to ensure you could keep track of them.
Its original use was to be against Ross or White but we going to use it to take Lane out of the equation, "Hopefully with him gone even Devon won't be able to try to take over." I remark, "It won't work. They'd sooner team up with us than follow a lackey of his. He's not high up enough on any alpha scale. They wouldn't let him and he'd have no way to get them to follow. Natural order of things." I nodded in acceptance of his words, not that Dix could see me. "Important safety tip." I remarked instead.
We all synced our timers on the watches and beepers we had. Okay the beeper I still had, I had trouble letting go of the thing. "Gather up!" Everyone there gathered around. Alec came around to my side. "Alec and I will hit the east side, Zack, you're on your own in the south side, Krit and Syl are at the west side, Mole and Joshua you hit the north side. I want everyone to check in via the phones through texts every ten minutes."
"Good. Remember the plan. Strike hard. Strike fast. Lay the charges. No loose ends. If you see one kill them. Don't hesitate, they won't. Wait till everyone here is clear, then light the bastards up." Everyone nodded, "And lastly, if you run into Lane, make sure he doesn't leave the compound." Smiles were all around. "Time to split up so let's move out." We all got back up and looked over at the castle looking compound. I couldn't help but think of all the times I got stuck in their hands.
Me stuck in a cage thanks to White.
Me getting trapped in a hospital and chased to the rooftops by White.
White tries to capture me via my Manticore clone.
White's cult pals have their freaky kid watch me in a cage thinking I'll die. Jokes on them.
White screws with Clemente during the JP siege and almost gets Cece killed trying to kill me. Oh and let's not forget when he fucked things up and over for transgenics all around by leaking information about us to the news. We lost Biggs and a number of other transgenics and transhumans due to that. And that's only a few things White has done to us. There's years of baggage and dirt to go into.
Alec POV
I grasped onto Max's hand, not even sure if she would be aware of it as I looked at the place we were going to breach. I knew Mole, Joshua, Zack, Krit and Syl were probably thinking back on their own times dealing with these cult loons. I know my head was going around fast as anything recalling all the bullshit that I got stuck in thanks to White and his cult loons. The things that I did for them.
I killed a transhuman for White. Proof of purchase.
I tried to kill Joshua. Same reason.
I broke trying to kill Max. She was so vulnerable. Weak from the taser. Her eyes begging me not to do it. Her voice had come out so shaky. I couldn't let myself do it. I'd rather have died. If she hadn't gotten me to the doc afterwards I would be dead. Our girls would never have been. I gripped her hand harder. She came out of her musings and held my hand to. Those were just the tip of what White has done to us.
Max POV
"This is for everyone back home." We all went our separate directions to plant the bombs. We made sure not to visually get caught by any roaming familiars in the area. Making sure to also plant the bombs in well hidden areas to avoid them being spotted or deactivated. All in all after the first ten minute check in everyone was ¾ quarters done. 'Give it till everyone check's in then move out.' I stated in hand signals.
Alec nodded before making sure we had the all clear. In the end I was the one holding the trigger to the detonating sequence. If all went well with the placement as Dix predicted the place would cave in and crush everyone inside to death. The asylum's only innocents were the ones that were so stuck in their own heads they would never be back out. This would at least put an end to their misery. They would never handle the real world.
I hated to think it but it was true. CJ was nutty but not to far off. The rest from his description to me one time were gagged for a reason. They were only causing harm to others and themselves, 'I'm going to go make sure Lane is in here.' I signal. Alec holds his hand up for me to stop, 'let's check.' I nod as he begins typing up the text. However I see someone coming by. Thinking familiar I have Alec duck and hide with me around a corridor.
It was Lane. I point to him for Alec to look. He turns his head. 'At least he's inside.' He signals as we see lane continuing forward out of sight. 'yeah. We need those charges set.' He re-types the text. Getting confirmation from everyone we get ready to leave out when we find Gamble coming our way, "Max there's an exit over here. I would have come looking for you sooner but I was made and had to leave. White's been given the kill order to end me." I was stunned.
"How?" I demanded, "I knew something was up when he admitted to having a thing for you." I heard White's voice coming nearby loud and clear. "452, coming to the lion's den. How brave. And utterly stupid. 494, never a dull moment with you around." White stated, "What can I say, where ever she is I am." Alec remarked. White seemed to ignore him, "Whatever it is your doing here will only result in your death. So let me say thank you."
I ignored his previous words, "I came to kill you. I made the mistake a long time ago of NOT canceling your ass. Not making that mistake twice." I supply. White came up to us with a gun in his hand. Alec pulled me behind him in a fast motion. "Won't matter 494, bullets here will still go through you and into her. Besides I have more than enough to take everyone here out." He motioned with his gun.
"Is that before or after we take you out?" Alec asked, "You have no chance." White remarked, his smirk as ever present on his face, "Well 452 can't say it wasn't fun." He began walking closer, his view of me better, "But times up and you've used up all nine of your lives." He smirked, "It looks like this story has finally reached its epic conclusion. I'll make sure to send 494 then Gamble in after you so no worries you won't be alone for long." He went to pull the trigger when Gamble stopped him.
Grappling him he smashed the gun from White's hand. "Traitor." White snarled at him. I look to Alec, "Make sure Lane doesn't get a chance to leave the building. I'll help Gamble take out White. Go. Now." Alec nodded before leaving. I know he hated to admit it but he knew he could trust me with Gamble. I looked back to find the two familiars in an all out fight. "I always knew you were weak." White spat at Gamble. "No I just saw the truth. And the truth is were no better than they are. Were equal." Gamble's words had White reacting.
Two quick succession fists were shot out as the gun had been lost in the first bout of their fighting. Gamble blocked before taking the third parting shot into his own grip and using an upturned elbow to slam into White's nose. It barely disoriented the FED before Gamble grabbed onto his right shoulder and bent White over enough to slam his knee into him. But there was no celebrating getting that move in.
White grappled for Gamble's waist and body slammed him into the ground by my feet, "Enough testosterone." I mumbled before hauling White from Gamble. Now two of us versus one of him, "I am far more superior than the both of you. Both in training and in strengths. You can't beat me." he boasted. "We don't plan on beating you. Killing yes not beating." I state flippantly, "Are you sure?" Gamble asked. I sighed, "Yeah. I made a mistake in not doing so years ago. I don't repeat my mistakes."
Alec POV
I knew Max and Gamble had White covered. Right now I needed to make sure Lane would NOT be leaving this place alive. I ran for him. I couldn't let him get to the center of the place and risk blowing our covers searching for Max. I found him at the end of a corridor. Running for it I began to blur and found a straggling familiar in my way. Slamming a fist hard enough to snap even a transgenic neck into him I heard the neck snap back and the sickening crunch of the bone cracking under the pressure.
Lane heard the familiar hit the ground and saw me coming his way. "Your bitch is a liar." He smarted, "You Lane you can say whatever you want to, to me but you need to stop making those remarks about my mate. I think now would do." I smarted back having slowed down. Still far enough away to prevent familiars from hearing us. "I'm going to enjoy this." Lane states, "You have no idea." I grip my hands into fists. "This time only one of us leaves alive." I tell him. He gazes at me oddly, somehow I think he knows the truth of it.
Max POV
Gamble went to engage him in fighting as I went for the gun White had previously dropped. I didn't react fast enough as Gamble got slammed into a nearby wall. White came up and grabbed the gun I now had. I didn't loosen up my grip and it gave him an advantage. Twisting himself around he flipped me none to gently over his shoulder. I landed barely on my own feet as he then kicked out at them.
"Your acrobatics won't keep you on your feet forever 452." I jumped him making him land on his back. Straddling him I gave a quick succession of punches, "It's called feline DNA ass." I grabbed his head in my hands, before slamming it into the ground, "Those priestess bitches must have recruited you off the short bus." I mocked before he was able to get a good punch in and knock me back enough.
Alec POV
I held Lane in a head lock as I repeated slammed my knee into his guts. "You like that bitch huh?!" I snapped. He grappled me before tossing me over his shoulder in response. I smirked and put a twist on the move that sent him over my head afterwards. He grunted his disapproval over it, "How does it feel to fight your own fights? Tough isn't it?" Lane I could see had a bloodied lip same as myself.
"You're a weak coward Lane. You preyed even on weak infants to get to an alpha male." I told him. He spat blood from his mouth before growling like the animal he partly was, "And you think you can stop me? 494 your nothing compared to me. A few lucky shots proves nothing. I am the rightful alpha. There's only so much time before your luck runs out." He stated as a parting shot.
"Yeah well regardless of that I'm here to make sure it never happens again." "You think you're so righteous, or good Alec?!" he snapped, spitting more blood out. "You're the weak one. Lady luck was with you the day you didn't get your ass beatin' to all hell that day back at Manticore, you remember that day right?" he asked, egging me on. "Yeah, you had your cronies hold me down why on a training exercise."
I hated that day. "You all ambushed me, had them hold me down as you began beating the living crap out of me." I had half a feeling that just to ruin my dignity and manhood he would do a lot worse than beat on my ass. It had been five transgenics to one that day. And they were all in a heaver weight section than I was. It was one of the few times a soldier thanked a guard for interrupting a fight in progress.
"The only reason you got out alive was because the guards came to get you for testing." I couldn't deny that. I was good but at the time you couldn't kill another soldier. When we were kids during the tests it was understood why but later on it was banned. I could only defend not kill and at that time the only way out was to kill. I wish I had though, I wish I had. "Your twin's psychosis saved your life. Who's going to save your life this time?" he asked, "This time it's just us." I replied. "It's all I need."
I blurred and body slammed him into a nearby wall only to get an elbow to the lower back for my efforts. Good thing was he was being made as an indent in the wall. He came by and I slammed my fist into his knee cap taking his leg out from under him for but a moment before he regain momentum. "It's time for you to see Ross again Alec…in hell." Lane's words had me kicking out before vaulting myself back up, "Not before you."
Max POV
Having gotten rid of the gun once more, disarming it more or less, I blocked a kick from White then a hit to my face. He went for that spinning kick as I ducked and kicked his other leg that was landing for balance out from under him, "Benefits of being smaller and more agile." I perked. It was Gamble who came in and slammed his foot into White's back knocking him off balance, "Should have seen this coming." I tilted my head to the side as White spoke to Gamble, "How so?" Gamble asked.
"You always referred to her as a she not an 'it'." White looked at me with disgust before moving his eyes back to Gamble. "Big deal. At least I acknowledge who I am and don't try to hide behind some façade of thinking I'm better. Take yourself for instance. You hide from the fact that your father cared more for her than the conclave that he brought you up in. Even saved your little brother. For a brief bit of time." I acknowledged CJ for the brief moment.
I had to say something. "White you rejected him, your own brother, some who did nothing wrong to you. Then some wacky cult dicks filled your head with bogus BS they did with Gamble here on superiority. You turned on him to make them happy. That is the ultimate betrayal and you did it." I spoke up, "It's the same thing Manticore told us. That we were better than humans, more superior." I finished.
White looked back to me, "We are better than them. We will crush you first then those little humans you try to save. The earth belongs to us." Gamble laughed at him. "Oh please White." We both looked to his laughing face. If I didn't know any better I'd say he lost it, "If she weren't even transgenic you'd been trying to get into her pants years ago. In fact I'd bet my council position, if I still had it, that if the familiars told you to do so, transgenic or not you would jump her bones." My eyes widened as his words.
Gamble merely laughed at both of our expressions. Though me and White didn't share the same ones. His was exploding anger and mild embarrassment and mine was just embarrassment. "The priceless look on your face at being called out on that fact. I wonder how often you've woken up wishing you could." He enraged White and bought his attention onto him. "I wonder how often you let your mind drift there and let yourself get lost in a fantasy."
Taking the opportunity as he was distracted by Gambles words, I kicked the back of White's kneecap out as Gamble and I came at him from both front and back. White eventually managed to get us both in front of him but I already knew how this would go down and it wouldn't end well for the FBI agent. However he was now acting more on anger based rather than controlled and it would be his down fall.
He was making strikes against us as we were to him. One particular hit from me ended with White backing up a few feet in mid-air. Gamble got a good lick in when he took in White's hit and slammed him back in the throat instead. I grabbed White's one arm and twisted it around only to have him slam his leg into the side of my own. Gamble kicked at his stomach as I used a new move on him.
Using the cat abilities of mine I jumped up and wrapped my legs around White's neck. He went for another weapon but was having trouble focusing since I was cutting off his airways from oxygen. Unfortunately though I saw him get a shot off at Gamble. I couldn't stop now so I kept going until White slammed me down on the ground. Still having him in a head lock I made a decision that I hope would be a good one.
"White." He looked to me. Hate in his eyes. Hate for what I was. Hate for his father turning his back and choosing in a sense me over him. Hate because I think Gamble may have been on to something in regards to White and how he viewed me. I had him in the position. Just one snap would be needed. And quick to before he broke the hold, "Your son…" I began. His eyes light up, "He's safe and alive." I saw a small light of thanks to me and a silent 'thank god' before I snapped his neck. He went limp in my hold as I let him go.
"Goodbye White." I pass a little sympathy on for him as he was a father. Ray didn't hate him, from my understanding he was a good father, but he also didn't know the type of man his father was. For Ray I gave my sympathies to. It was the struggling coughing Gamble that caught my attention. I left White's prone dead body to see how he was doing, "Go get Alec and get out of here." He gurgled up, "No I can get you - " he grasped onto my shirt, "This is how it's supposed to end."
"NO there's no ending just a new beginning." I tried, he nearly laughed at me. I saw the wound he had. White had hit him in the lung. It was filling with blood as we spoke. Worst part was I had nothing there to help him with, "Listen you've seen our 'freak flag' right." He looks to me in acknowledgment, "That white down there at the very bottom, it represent the light that were going into."
He smiled, "With us now having beaten the enemy we've found the light, and it's thanks to you. So you gotta survive." I tried. He merely smiled at me. He had accepted his fate. He wasn't going to help me help him get out of here and to be honest I think he was going to die shortly. I saw the blood that was pooling from his mouth. He would last longer than a human but not by much, "Max…just answer me one thing."
I nod. It was the least I could do. "Anything." I tell him, "If Alec weren't in the picture…if we had met before him…would 'we' have had a chance?" I hide the truth behind my Manticore mask and put on a sad smile. I didn't want him to see the truth staring at him as I lied. It was bad enough I would be lying but maybe I could give him something to smile about, "Maybe…never know." In truth I don't think even if Alec wasn't there that I would.
"There's a group that you should know of. Their familiars to. One that have been hiding from the conclave for years now. They contacted me recently knowing how closely I work with you. They said they've been watching and knew I could be trusted to pass on the intel. They went to live in total secrecy from the conclave. They just want to live normal lives same as you and your people do." This was news to me.
"They don't hold the same beliefs as the rest here do. Their not die hard snake worshipping dicks bent on world domination, their good people. I told them if you take out this group here today to get into contact with you. That I would let you know so when they contact you it will be better received. They have information on familiars all over the globe. They can help you get rid of them." I furrowed my brows in question.
"Why not tell us sooner?" I asked. He spat blood out onto the ground, "Out of fear of their safety if I released it to early." Gamble pushed me away, "They will know about this. It'll spread like wild fire through the community. They will contact you. Now go get Alec and get the hell outta here. I wanna see how this plays out." He hummed in laughter, "Go before more familiars come out." I nodded, pursing my lips I kissed his forehead, "Thank you for everything." He smiles wistfully then pushes me away. I took off for Alec.
Author POV
Gamble smiled to himself, he knew he was dying but at least Max got to safety. "Take care of her Alec." He grinned, muttering to himself. "No parting words for yourself?" he looked up and found one of the priestess's looking down at him, "Why did you help them?" she asked, "Cause Sandman was right. They are better than us. He knew what he was doing. We're nothing more than a cult of loons wanting to rule a world that's already chaotic, corrupt and miserable." He coughed again.
"The world is ours to be taken. So it was written." Gamble laughed again, "This hilarious. With all of our selective breeding, our rituals, our ancient Minoan language, and the people we have, and all it took was one man who saw past all this garbled BS and found a future to save mankind." The priestess frowned, "The transgenics." He smiled, "Sandman found a way to end this thousand year old cult and it freaked you all out. Now a young woman is your highest priority to kill." He smiled.
"You know all this crap would make a good sci fi show. A little mini-series even." It enraged the priestess, "You dare mock our religion? The very thing you grew up in? The very thing you lived by since birth?" he laughed even harder at her, "It's not a religion. It's a cult. And for following it the way we have we've murdered in cold blood, we've killed innocent children for hundreds of years, we've sacrificed so much…" Gamble he could tell truly regretted who he was, "Is that why you helped 452?" she asked.
"It's how I fell for her. I didn't even know it till later on but…I did." He looked over to White, "I think he did to. He was just more dedicated to the cult than I was." they looked over. "It seems he's out lived his usefulness." While internally she was mad that 452, the banning existence of the conclave had killed one of her top agents, she was also glad to. White she could tell was failing to much for her liking lately and found that perhaps he did hold a feeling for the transgenic that he wasn't even admitting to himself.
She didn't let her feelings show outwardly but did respond, "I will be ordering our brothers and sisters to make a full sweep of the place. If there are any more transgenics this will be their funeral." Gamble merely coughed up more blood, "As these are my last words here let me say this to you." The priestess moved closer to him. He seemed to struggle so she bent down to just above his level.
Near death he knew he had to make this quick or else she would take away the extra precious seconds Max and Alec had to make everything go off without a hitch. He believed in Max and her TC residents to make a better future out there. Resolve in his turned down face, he moved to fast for her to see as a small blade came out from his person. The barely there four inches was stabled full hilt with all of his remaining familiar strength into her neck.
Her face in shock, her eyes wide open in anger, but most of all fear. She was facing death. He gurgled more blood out, "In the words of Maxine Guevera – Mcdowell…Kiss. My. Ass." Blade lodged inside she fell to the side of him, her throat pumping out blood faster than she could handle. She would be dead within 30 seconds. He himself smiled one last time, laughing a bit even as his lungs filled up, taking his breath away. He slumped for good.
Alec POV
Lane went for my head again, I ducked and hit him in the kidneys before slamming him twice in the face. He grabbed my third slam and tossed me over his shoulder. Landing on my feet I kicked back and heard him stumble a bit. I turned around and found him gearing up for a big scale attack. We both went to kick one another which resulted in our shins colliding so hard they nearly cracked on impact.
I spun kicked him in the face making him fly into a nearby wall, "Is that the best you got?" I asked, "Not even close." He vaulted himself at full transgenic speed at me. I had three seconds maybe. The impact would impair me. He was a larger weight class by at least 35 pounds. The other X5 was stockier than myself. I knew this could only end one way. I took the three seconds to good use.
As Lane half ran half jumped for me, I jumped at the last minute and watched his face do a 'what the fuck?' moment before vaulting myself over his shoulder in a blur and slam his body down at such an angle he would be impaired instead, "You shouldn't have threatened my family." I muttered before turning around and snapping his neck in a quick fluid motion. His boy now lay lifeless as I heard Max coming down.
I looked back as she came in my direction before looking down at Lane's prone body. He wouldn't be leaving. His skills were good but he relied to much on abilities and not enough on skills to understand what I was doing. His own downfall. I went to meet Max as we ran as fast as possible to the extraction point, "He down?" she asked. "For good." I remarked. She looked over to me before nodding.
Max POV
"We need to get to the extraction point." I mutter. We ran for it as the conclave members were starting up the final part of their ceremony. "If they realize that White is gone before we get outside were screwed." I told him when we got to the end of a hallway. "Those doors lead to the outside." We began getting in responses from our team mates that they were out already. Looks like we're the last ones to get out." Alec responds. We get out only to find the Phalanx outside waiting for us.
"Why aren't they inside to?" I ask, "Don't know. Your friend Gamble didn't mention them being security either." Alec retorted, "Gamble's dead. They found him out." I snap out. Alec I see looks down at me, "Sorry. For a familiar he was a good guy." I nod, "You guys want to throw down go ahead. But it will be us left standing." I warn. Two of the members merely smirked, "Let's show the filth who's better." One remarked. "Max!" I looked over to find Zack in the custody of another member.
"Do it!" he yelled. I fingered the trigger in my pocket. One hit and the bombs would go off. In seconds the whole place behind us would be decimated. They were designed to do so. The Phalanx began to chant something. My guess was blessings from the almighty powerful snake god'. Or some other such bullshit. "The hell are they saying?" Alec asked. "'Kumbaya!' who the hell cares?! Do it!'" Zack's words have me pull the trigger out. "Hey bitch!" I call out the red head, "Designate this."
I hit the trigger and every bomb in there hit its sequence as the building caved in killing everyone inside. Everything sounded ridiculously loud thanks to our sensitive hearing. It was also enough to make the ground rumble throwing us off kilter and knocking some of the familiars off enough for Zack and anyone else that had been caught to free themselves. Now however we had several very pissed off top of the line familiars to deal with.
"Let's end these 'no-pain, no-gain' assholes once and for all." I tell Alec, "You got my vote." He remarked. "Syl? Krit? Zack? Mole? Joshua?" I called out, "Max?" a chorus of my name was heard, "Take 'em out!" I screamed. Alec and I both made flying jumps in the air, both hitting a familiar on contact. We knocked the weapons away and went for kill strikes. Time for them was done with. I was done playing nice. Done trying to prove we weren't what we are. Their aim is to end innocent lives, not on my watch.
I get up to one familiar and grab a knife hidden on my belt and stab him in the throat in a blurring motion. He goes down fast. I push down the urge to wince as I move onto the next familiar. Another comes up to me, he goes to stab me himself, even the familiars are armed, "Guess you guys realized were not easy for going down." I remarked before grabbing the blade wielded arm and twist it far to the side enough before slamming my head into their nose breaking the bone on contact.
I don't take any chances, he stumbles back a bit so I kick him full on in the gut, making him hit the ground behind him. He throws a knife at me that I barely catch. Had I not been as well trained as I have been transgenic or not it might have sliced my throat open. With my catch in place I toss it right back at full speed. Familiars maybe strong as us if not a bit stronger but their definitely not faster.
Alec POV
Bastards weren't going to win this one. I had one aim his semi-automatic at me. Blurring I barely dodged the well aimed bullets before disarming the guy by breaking his neck. My assassin training guiding me well. I grab the butt of the gun, slam it into the throat of a familiar as he turns purple, "Did I break your trachea there?" I ask him before slamming the butt if it again, "Guess so."
Two guys were shot to death and another I slammed the gun since he was to close into his leg. I crippled him from the fight as the struck area caused a sickening crunch that I nearly winced at. I tossed him bodily into another familiar while I had another come up at the last second. He went to shot me. barely dodging the bullet I grabbed the offending hand, twisted it, then pushed my other hand into his elbow joint hard enough to crack it, "So you guys do have a pain thresh hold." I saw his face wince.
"Not as low as yours." He remarked. "True." I admit before slamming the now dislodged gun into his face, slamming it into his temple. It wouldn't knock him out but will definitely create some amount of harm. What did cause harm was the bullet I put in his skull. "Thanks for the gun." The sarcasm rolling off of me. "Nice piece." I had to admit looking at it, "Alec!" I pointed the gun at the disabled familiar and shot him down before he could lay off a good one into me, "Nice try." I muttered.
Zack POV
If only Lydecker could see us now. If he only knew that I heard him that day so long ago. 'realizing our purpose in life'. I'd love to say to go to hell but at the end of the day, this is what we were meant to do. I shot three familiars cold dead. I had tangled with these guys once before didn't feel like fighting. Besides I was still hurting a tad bit from that fight with Lane. Whom is now good as dead.
I looked over and saw two that I missed only to see Mole shooting his shot gun at them, "Ain't a party without ole Bessy." He grinned around his cigar. I smiled at him, "You wanna go looking for straggler familiars?" I invite. As odd as Mole first was getting to know him I like having another anti – Logan, gun toting, soldier around. I might even take up cigars who knows. "Lead the way 'memory boy'." I have to get rid of that nick name though.
"Joshua help to." I saw the big dog guy toss a now dead familiar into the rumble. "Let the body burn. Funeral." He spoke, "Good idea to make sure their dead. No loose ends. Keep the innocents safe." I tell him, "Make familiar bitches go down for good." Mole and I both smile, "Exactly." Yup I sure as hell am NOT telling Deck how good this feels. Cause he was right, at least for some of us.
I look over and see Max fighting. She's very stealth with her knives. Grabbing one from a familiar only to use it to stab another in the gut before using the same blade and pulling it out only to slice his throat open before finally grabbing the familiar who still had his hands on the blade and stabbing him in the gut with it, "Way to go Maxie." I say. Not loudly but if she's listening she'll hear it. I see her look over before smiling and getting back to kicking ass, "Let's go guys." I tell Mole and Joshua as we leave off.
Alec POV
Last set of familiars, I grab one holding a gun but he's got a good grip on it. Seeing another one coming I say, "Sorry bout this." He looks to me oddly before I smash my knee with everything into his balls. He goes down enough for me to twist the gun around, and shot at the guy behind him through him as he takes the other familiars bullets. He falls down dead, 'The balls I meant." I admonish.
I look over and find Joshua slam his knee into a familiar before his elbow then tossing him in to the fiery building. "Joshua!" he roars out. The familiar manages to get out so Joshua growls before grabbing him, flame and all and slamming him head first into a block of fallen cement. I watch the guy go limp before being tossed back in to the raging fire. I take a look at Max to find her banking off the ground backwards using her agility and breaking the hold a familiar got on her before slamming the last knife she had in the back of his neck.
Instant kill. "Okay I think their all dead." I call out. Rest assured that was every familiar in the area. I looked to find the red bitch, the ban of our existence next to White that is, wherever he is, in the inferno probably, looking at us as her throat bleeds out. Max looks nearly remorseful, "Transgenic filth." She gurgles out, "You were nothing more than a 'muscle queen'. And as promised I took you down." She tells her.
The light leaves her eyes as we gather our own resources. I look around and see Syl and Krit coming our way. "We fought off a few straggling familiars but otherwise the area is clear." He looks at all the bodies we mounted, "Got busy huh?" he asked, "A little." I answer. We all gathered around checking what we had left and pulling blades out of bodies as a set of wheels we knew didn't belong to us rolled up.
A very elderly man with a cane came out. Dressed in a business suit he came out with a wise old smile on his face, "I see everything worked out as it was supposed to." Max was the first to talk and get into a defensive position. "Who the hell are you?" she demanded. We all heard a whine as Joshua sniffed the air, "Ah Joshua." The man said as Joshua we saw walk towards him, a whine that I hadn't heard in a while came again.
"Joshua?" Max asked. He looked back, and happy as a doggie, no pun intended fussed over the elderly man, "Joshua mind clueing us in on who he is?" I asked, still weary of the elderly man, though the cane looked oddly familiar to me. Couldn't figure out why though, "Oh god…" Max saw the cane to and looked stunned at the man, "Max?" I asked, "Joshua is that…?" she began asking. Joshua looked at the man, "Father I knew you'd be back."
To be continued…
