"The city?" Eddward asked as shock set in. Kevin smirked and nodded his head. The sock clad teen sat in silence watching out the window as kevin drove the opposite direction of the Cul-de-sac. Eddward let many thoughts swirl around his head, and sometime had passed before the teen decided to speak.
"Do you know your way around the city ?" Eddward asked kindly. he was genuinely curious. Kevin looked over at his road trip partner and he chuckled a bit.
"I go to the city at least twice a month." Kevin laughed when Eddward gasped in surprise."my aunt and uncle live in the city. Or an outskirt of it anyway." Eddward nodded his head in understanding before taking a breath as they left Peachcreek city limits.
"I have only ever been throughout the city once...When I was little and we moved to Peachcreek." It was Kevin's turn to be surprised . Edd was almost 17 . Eddward placed a small hand over his smile. A response to Kevin's obvious shock.
"Actually, I haven't left Peachcreek since I moved there. I wasn't ever allowed too. Anytime there was a field trip Mother and Father were gone and unable to sign my permission slips." Kevin let the information swirl around his head. The redhead hadn't really noticed that Eddward's childhood wasn't as good as Kevin thought it was. Suddenly guilt filled his gut and he swallowed hard while taking peeks at Eddward. The larger teen sighed as he focused on what he was planing to say.
"I'm sorry Eddward." Kevin sighed out to the small teen next to him. The sockhead looked sadly at the driver and then giggled a bit.
"It's not your Fault. Mother and Father were just busy." Kevin sighed and fidgeted with the wheel of the car. Before continuing with a huff.
" No...For the way I treated you. I didn't know about your family life." Kevin said while he watched the road. Eddward removed his eyes from his travel companion and focused on the road as well.
"What is there to do in the city?" Eddward asked changing the subject. Kevin was more than okay with the sudden topic swap.
"Like Everything." Kevin answered with a smile. "We can go to the movies, there is a huge mall, the zoo, theme parks. Plus my aunt and uncle breed giant dogs for a living, and Tina just had puppies." Eddward smiled enjoying Kevin's obvious love for the city.
" I can't wait." Eddward squealed out." How long does it take to get there." Kevin looked at the radio clock and then at the sign leading to the interstate.
" About two hours." Kevin answered. Eddward smiled excitedly letting his eyes take up all the scenery. He was a little nervous leaving the safe boundaries of Peach Creek, But the sock clad teen knew he was more than safe in the protection of Kevin. Suddenly a ring brought him out of his thoughts and kevin chanced a peek at his phone.
"Shit...My moms calling." Kevin looked to his ringing phone and back to the road with conflicting. Finally the teen sighed and swiped a finger across his phone and placed it to his ear. " Hey mama bear." Kevin cooed out foundly. The woman on the other line said a few mumbled things that Edward couldn't hear. "Oh?" Kevin said with a bewildered look. "Ya Aunt Sam and Uncle Brent?" Eddward eyed the redhead as he listened in to the one sided conversation wishing he could hear what Susie was saying. The end of the conversation Edd could hear had drizzled to grunts and chuckles. "Okay mom. Love you." and with that the conversation was over. Kevin quickly tossed his phone down on the seat. Without a word the redhead went back to his task of driving while Eddward continued to stare in confusion. minutes had passed before kevin returned the gaze.
"What dork?" Eddward changed his expression to a more angry one before thrusting his tongue into his gap in annoyance. It was rude to ask what they had spoke about but Eddward wanted to know all the same.
"Do you trust me?" Kevin asked point blank. The sock clad teen let the questing hang in the air. His fingertips drummed on the armrest as his eyes scanned the surroundings outside the car. Kevin would of been more hurt by Eddward obvious loss in thought that his question caused. except he didn't blame him one bit. The redhead had been a bully in his past, and one of his main tormented sat next to him contemplating the level of trust he could have with him.
"Completely." Eddward answered with a gap toothed smile. Kevin returned the smile before continuing the conversation.
"Then don't worry about it and let me do my thing." Eddward was speechless but decided to just let it go and instead let a comfortable silence pass between the pair as they made their way to the city and possibly an adventure that Eddward didn't even know he so desperately craved.
….
"Hey Double D, wake up man." Eddward jarred awake as soon as Kevin touched his face. Memories of his father's last moments on earth fresh in his mind. His breathing became heavy and tears began to fall down his cheeks. The teen closed his eyes tightly shut as he attempted to gather his surrounding. "Edd, it's okay. we're in the car parked outside of my aunt and uncle place. It's 2 in the afternoon." Eddward was quite certain that voice was Kevins. "Open your eyes." the voice said and the dark haired teen obeyed. Kevin sat on his knees with his hands on Eddward's face and his other on the small teens leg. the sock heads tears quickly turned to sobbing and the teen tossed his arms around Kevin. the larger teen quickly returned the embrace. With one fluid motion Kevin wiggled his way under Eddward and placed the sobbing boy in his lap while repeating the same phrase. "it's over now. it's okay." fifteen minutes had passed and Eddward began to calm down. Once Kevin felt the teens breathing level out he let a few more minutes pass before he said anything.
"Wanna see puppies?" Eddward pulled himself off of Kevin's chest long enough to nod a yes at the redhead. The raven haired boy rubbed his eyes and sniffed a bit.
"What kind of puppies?" The boy asked as he wiggled out of Kevin's lap.
"I don't know." Kevin answered while he too removed himself from the car. "I can never remember their name. But they are big and fluffy and big...and fluffy." Eddward laughed as he began to follow Kevin who had started stepping in the direction of a barn house. blue eyes scanned their surroundings. a barn house sat in the middle of a rather large plot of land. across from the barn yard stood two Victorian looking houses.
"Are they Saint Bernards?" Eddward asked as he half jogged to keep up with his much taller companion. Kevin suddenly stopped himself and turned causing the dark hair teen to run into him.
"Nope" the redhead answered with a coy smile as he opened the barn door. Eddward had to let his eyes adjust before he made out the large fluffy blobs running excitedly towards him. He didn't even have to guess what kind of dogs these were. Eddward knew immediately what kind of puppies barreled at him. An excited smile graced his lips and Eddward fell to his knees open armed awaiting a flurry of giant fluffy madness.
"They are Tibetan Mastiffs." Eddward exclaimed as the first wave of fluffy fat goodness hit him hard enough to knock him down. For once the neat freak didn't say a single word about lying on the dirt covered ground. This surprised Kevin for many reasons. the first and foremost being they were currently in an old dirty barn with mice and other questionable and dirty things. but there Eddward laid on the ground while 7 puppies crawled and slobbered over him.
"I didn't picture you as a dog kinda guy." Kevin said in awe braking Eddward's puppy induced coma. the said teen slowly brought himself up but still keep a loving hand down far enough to pet the large fluffy pups.
"I have always wanted a dog. ever since I was little. Mother and Father would never allow it." Eddward answered as he fell to his knees once again burying his face into a rather large brown fluff ball. "I actually wrote my 8th grade science paper on Tibetan Mastiffs…" Eddward took a breath while Kevin sat next to him inviting some of the fluffy mess to him as he listened to Eddward.
"In hopes that when my parents read it they would let me get one for protection ….I thought it was a good argument since they were always gone." The boy continued while he sat on his butt and pulled the brown fluff blob onto his lap. "They never actually read it. but it got published in the Peach creek middle school paper." The teen giggled a bit and the blob began to yawn and sprawl out for a nap.
"I never imagined I would be sitting in an old dirty barn petting puppies with you of all people." Kevin announced in a baby voice as he scratched behind the ear of the fluffy pup that came to visit with him. Eddward's eyes grew wide and his blue eyes scanned the ground in terror. Kevin laughed while he watched the germ fearing teen have an internal war with himself. on one hand the dirty, filthy, ground he sat on and the other a giant lap full of fluffy eutopia sleeping soundly.
" Messy, messy, messy" Eddward whispered trying not to wake the puppy on his lap. he had made his choice here with the dirty fluffy cuteness. Kevin smiled and let the large pup he was entertaining chew playfully on his hand.
"Where your parents ever home?" The redhead asked absent mindedly. Kevin sighed and was about to apologize when Eddward answered.
"Not after I moved to the Cul-de-sac." Kevin couldn't remember how old the sock head was when he had shown up, but he knew he was young.
"What changed when you moved?" Kevin figured he would risk it. he had already began the subject and the redhead wasn't one to back down. The green eyed jock watched the other teen waiting for an answer. To his surprise Eddward placed his free hand over his forehead, where his trademark sock hat hid the scar that Kevin was now aware of.
" An accident." Eddward whispered before being interrupted by a southern accent rich female voice.
"There's my favorite nephew." the voice belonged to a stunning middle aged redhead woman who shared quite a likeness to Kevin. The said nephew smiled while he stood up and embraced the woman.
"Aunt Sam...I'm your only nephew." Kevin announced during the hug.
"I like you so much more than Char's girls." Kevin moved slightly away to give his aunt a disapproving look. "What? those two cousin's of yours are just awful." Kevin gave a nod of agreement and released the grip he had on Sam. The redhead woman let her eyes fall to Eddward who still sat on the ground with a lap full of dog.
"You must be Eddward." She said in her southern drawl with a pretty smile. "Susie has told me so much about said you were the sweetest little thing and as sharp as a knife." Eddward began to blush as he attempted to remove the pup carefully so the fluff ball wouldn't wake up. "She failed to tell me you were so damn pretty." The small teen quickly eyed the woman in surprise. no one had ever told him he was pretty."Your eyes might be the prettiest things I have seen in all my 45 years of life."
"You are 45? I thought you were in your early 30's!" Eddward stammered out. Sam laughed and offered a helping hand to the teen still sitting on the ground. the teen took the hand and in no time was back on his feet.
"Double D, I would like you to met my favorite aunt…" Kevin began with a smile and gestured to the woman standing next to them. "Sam! we will be staying with her and my Uncle Brent tonight." Eddward looked from Sam to Kevin with a startled expression.
"We get to stay the night?" Eddward asked with a glint of excitement in his voice. Kevin and Sam shared a knowing smile before the redheaded teen answered.
"Mama Bears orders"
