FLAMES FROM THE HEART
(CASSIE'S POV)
I walked over to the end of the garden, ditching the guards. I knew that by now, someone or the other might've discovered that I wasn't available and Sybilla would've put on the drama that I was in the washroom or something like that. I located Brady, who when saw me, bent down. I first of all, needed to talk to him, even though not an exact talk but I somehow always knew what he wanted to say by his eyes.
"Brady, we're running." I told him. I knew he knew that but I didn't understand why I said that.
You know, I can't fight you.
"I know that."
But c'mon! Okay, I'm not letting you go in front of him, okay? He moved his head just near to my stomach and his ears kind of lowered down, exactly like what Marley does when he needs extra puppy food.
"Cut it off, Brady. I'm going to fight him either way." I told him. I wasn't in the mood of fun or something and right now, nothing was going to stop me. It just wasn't about my sister – Amy or Wayne but I loved all of them. It quite dawned upon me that when my dad could first kill her mother, how he would even let go off my mother and my sister Amy. Wayne and the others never meant anything to him and so, he could crush all of them just like some insects and it somehow was killing me inside. I climbed onto him and clutched my pendant along with his reins and that second I knew, tonight it was either me or Theo. That's right.
(LOUIS' POV)
It was getting weird for me, every second to be near a girl I loved so much but never could get. I knew her heart belonged to another guy and I had done enough a couple of days ago to hurt her. I knew I was stupid but I couldn't really hold reins of myself. I felt as if she was going away from me every minute she wasn't around me and indeed, she had left me a long while ago. The reality was: I had been in love since I was seven and with the same little girl and when I saw her as a girl named Faith who had no memories of herself, I somewhere felt that she might be the one who would make me forget about Cassie but it turned out, that she was the same Cassie. I knew what all of them meant for her. I knew what difference everyone made in her life. So this was the time. I knew it would be risky, even for her but when Brady was with her, I knew nothing could go wrong. It was because I knew that he had gone through the pain of losing her once and would never want to do again and even though I wouldn't go off guard, but I have to start understanding that she and I don't ever belong with each other.
The second she walked down the stairs, my heart skipped its beats. Sybilla elbowed me in my stomach.
"Ow!" I cried in pain.
"Quit staring at her like that and go get the bag. I'll keep the others busy." She told me. She had figured out it the day I got her here. Don't ask me how because even I never got it. It was weird how Sybilla told me that she knew it from the way I see her. I never look at her more than ten seconds because otherwise my breathing stops. I walked in the last room and got the bag ready but there was something left. I ran up to her room and got her amethyst royal pendant from her jewelry box and put it the bag. The speech had started and I knew Cassie would've been waiting there for me. I walked down and straight to where I had told her to wait for me. The sight of her made me beating stop and then start even faster go like – Cass-ie, Cass-ie…
Oh quit it!
One thing to say was that she looked so pretty that I could not feel my eyes blinking for some time but I got myself together and said: "Okay, look, I'll be just after you with Rhys and Sybilla in a few minutes after you change. Here you go." I gave her the bag. "Everything in there, Sybilla packed it."
"You know what, Louis?" she stood up on her toes and kissed my cheek. Did this REALLY JUST HAPPEN? "Thanks for understanding me."
"Uh…you didn't …need t-to…do that." I stuttered. God, what's wrong with me? I pulled my melting heart together and said again: "Okay, Brady's there at the end of the garden where the woods start."
And then, I lost her sight. It was weird how I felt every time around her. In a part of my brain, I could still sense her anxiety, her fears and to top it, her strong determination. The drama inside had started. Everyone was looking for her and then, when the three of us hit a chance, we three ran to Rhys' SUV and he pulled it. That is how we ran from there.
(CASSIE'S POV)
Don't ask me how, but we just ended up being chained here, in a farmhouse in La Push after we reached the outskirts in half-an-hour. Okay, let's just say I made Brady end up in the wrong direction where there was no one in-charge for patrols and safety, thinking that it might be safer for us to enter through somewhere where no one had an idea how we were coming and by chance it happened, that this is was where they caught us.
Bingo!
"Well, you have me. You might as well let all of them go now!" I shrieked behind the chains. God, they hurt now. The imprints were there, in the other corner, far-far away from me. Brady was chained in his wolf form and due to him being unconscious, he wasn't moving, and that for some minutes had given me a major heart attack from fear.
"You know, you are my daughter and there's just one little difference between you and me." Theo bent in front of me and crouched as he talked to me. I was chained to a pillar and was sitting. God knows what has kept me like this for some minutes.
"Yeah, lemme answer that. The difference is that my mental balance, still being a human is fine but you've completely lost it, even though, now you're a vampire." I shouted trying to pull the chains. It didn't work, instead it hurt me.
"Nuh-uh. The only difference is that you…listen to your heart over your brain and I listen to my brain." He told me.
"You know what, Theo? You should have a working heart too for actually not listening to it. I mean I really don't get what you will get by ruling over these vampires and everyone else in the hidden world."
"You know, this is the similarity between you and her, Diana!" he called. Mom? I hadn't even thought and seen her here!
"Where's mom?!"
"See, a word for you washes away everything. These are human emotions that will one day back you down, so right now, what I am thinking is to turn you." He said.
"WHAT?!"
Okay, here was when I completely lost my brain and freaked out. I won't be a monster! No freaking way! I don't want to lose anything. No! Not at all! My palms again went sweaty and that second, I heard a growl. It was coming from Brady's direction. He was getting up! Till finally a lot of growls were heard and the ground almost exploded. I didn't get how but Louis was there and with Rhys and Sybilla and the shape shifters!
With that, the fight…the real one started. Embry got to break the chains and all. Rachel was shut in a room inside. Well, I just couldn't get why my mother, of all the people, fell for a guy like my sperm donor. Anyway, I then saw Brady galloping towards me. Louis came first and stood in front of me.
"I got her." he told Brady who wailed a growl. "Okay, melt it. Focus." He barked at me.
"Some way to talk to the princess." I muttered. I just couldn't get why they think that I'm really strong. For what I know, I'm nothing as much as him but still somehow when I looked at him and Brady trying to tell me what I could do, I didn't get how but the iron melted.
"How…" was all I could spit out in front of them as Louis helped me up.
"I know pretty cool, huh?" he said. I moved my hand gently on Brady's head. I could understand his worries.
"Okay, time to tighten him." I muttered.
"No way. You're going back. We are going to ship you off safely to the Rez." He told me. Brady gave me a yeah-that's-right look.
"Urgh! Why don't you get it? I need to get him before he does something wrong and I know no one else could…" I was cut off by the scream from a room away from the place I was in. It was dark here, so I couldn't help myself much.
"PAUL!" I got the feminine voice to be Rachel's. Oh my god! She was the weakest but the most effective target for Theo. I saw that Paul, in his wolf form, was running with us as Theo dragged her outside. Everyone was fighting each one while some were getting the imprints to flee.
"Theo, leaver her!" I called but he won't just stop till we reached out to the clearing.
"Want her, kid?" he asked me. "Ask the three to turn around and get lost."
"Guys, go." I told them. Paul had an uncertain look on his face. "Trust me, Paul; I won't let anything happen to her." He didn't go but shook his head.
"I said: GO!" I yelled. Brady tried to push Paul away and got him at the far end near the trees.
"You take two steps, she takes two. Now, walk." He called. Rachel stood up and walked. I walked the same as she did. It was weird because I kind of understood that it wasn't safe for me, not just safe, it was fatal for me. My legs shivered as I walked. I looked back for once in Brady's direction. I knew what I was doing was simply hurting him. Then, I heard a voice in my head.
You'll be 500% of yourself once you have the pendant. All you got to do is trust it and yourself. This was grandma's voice and I now, for all, knew what she had meant all this time. I could do this. I just had to believe in myself.
"My dear daughter." I heard Theo say.
"No, I'm not your daughter!" I shrieked. I looked back once again. Rachel had gone and now, for somewhere Amy and Wayne were there. I didn't know how my brain heated up more than ever and followed by my whole body but it wasn't hurting me. Theo seemed pretty terrified now and I couldn't get why. But I knew what I had to do now as I saw the flames coming out of my hands. I couldn't really get why they didn't hurt me.
"You know what, Theo? This is for killing Amy's mom." As I said, some more dangerous flames came out of me and hit him hard against a tree. "This is for betraying my mom! This is for separating me and Brady and this, for never letting me live the way normal kids do. You know, because of you, I couldn't trust love at first but now, get this clear, Theo, you're not going to destroy any other lives!"
With that, I didn't get how, but something happened. My vision was getting redder and redder and all I could focus was on him and I watched as the cold wind swept past….
(BRADY'S POV)
I ran along with her and Louis. I now understood that the relation between the both of them was far more complicated that I could ever understand. All out of it I knew was that Louis would never let her get hurt like me. He would always be by her side when I couldn't be. Cassie didn't love her the way she loved me, but it was different even if I know she had a crush on him earlier. I'm her imprinter and he is kind of his…bodyguard. Well, not exactly but kind of.
Coming to the present, Theo had dragged Rachel out along with him. We had run after him outside into the clearing. Even though my imprint was an almost normal human (i.e. count her physical abilities), she ran at a far accelerated speed and with us which was pretty weird knowing the fact she would've been tired since the ball and running on my back. Theo stopped at about a twenty meter distance from us.
"Want her, kid?" he asked, looking at her. I knew this was a trouble. Not just a trouble, this was a fatality for my imprint. I just couldn't let her go! "Ask the three to turn around and get lost."
Oh yeah! Like fuck would we go back.
He is neither going to touch my imprint nor my sister. Just watch. – Paul.
He was going to charge but I stopped him for a reason, knowing Rachel was still in his reach and so was Cassie.
"Guys, go." She said and there was a peculiar determination in her voice. "Trust me, Paul; I won't let anything happen to her."
We three didn't budge. I just didn't want to. I wanted to just rush over and get my imprint and kill her father.
"I said: GO!" she yelled at us. At this, I knew if we didn't back out, Theo could do something to harm Rachel, Cassie and the baby.
Paul, we need to back out. – Me.
No! That's my family out there! I can't let them go. - Paul.
Even though he was right, I knew the right thing to do was to push Paul back. We didn't practically back out, but just a little.
"You take two steps, she takes two. Now, walk." He called. She walked a few steps the same as Rachel. This was a straight dagger to my heart. It was so hurting that I just couldn't understand what to do. As Cassie looked at me, I tried to say that she shouldn't do this but it only turned out that I could growl, nothing else. I needed my imprint but what could I do?
"My dear daughter." He said. By now, Rachel and Paul had reached out of the clearing. Paul had told me that Rachel was safe and nothing much had happened to her except that she was a bit weak.
"I'm not your daughter!" I heard my imprint shriek. Louis looked at me. I remembered the plan. Louis knew that she was so annoyed and angry right now, that she was going to burn everything in a ten meter radius and right now, she was an atom bomb like the ones dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I knew this was going to do the damage but something felt right about being here. Louis had told me beforehand that my being here could give her the courage to end the 'Theo' story today. Now, Cassie started covering in flames.
"Okay, I get it from here." Louis told me. I nodded. Wayne and Amy had started the process already. They were giving her their elements so as to control her and then we heard her speak again. Theo's face had gone all white. Well, it already was but now because of the fear he had been seeing. Her looking like that, all covered in flames, was scaring me too but I knew she wasn't getting hurt otherwise I could've felt it already. Instead, I felt like she liked it.
"You know what, Theo? This is for killing Amy's mom." As she said, some more dangerous flames came out of her and hit him hard against a tree. "This is for betraying my mom! This is for separating me and Brady and this, for never letting me live the way normal kids do. You know, because of you, I couldn't trust love at first but now, get this clear, Theo, you're not going to destroy any other lives!"
She was getting way too dangerous right now and her glow was burning a few trees. Wayne tried to put water on them and Amy helped him by conducting the cold wind there. In that second, we saw that Cassie had reached up in the sky as Theo burned and ruptured into pieces. He was burning and as she exploded, the flames hit me and Louis. Louis was the one controlling her without Bella's shield. Wayne and Amy were in the shield. I watched her as she descended back on the ground. It wasn't as if she had been thrown down but she was gliding back as if she was a feather. She fell near me and she was unconscious is what the last I saw as my eyes closed.
As I slowly opened my eyes, I found myself on a hospital bed. My head still whirled from the explosion my girlfriend had caused. I realized I didn't have a shirt on and just a pair of cut offs was what I was wearing.
Hold on!
Cassie?
My head came back to the normal form as soon as her name hit my brain. I jumped up and saw Quil. I was in the common ward and it was fine.
"Do you remember your name?" he asked me.
"Oh cut it off, Quil! Where's Cassie?" I asked him.
"Oh, that atomic reactor, she's…uh…in for some repairs." He answered me.
"WHAT. THE. FUCK. DO. YOU. MEAN. ?"I, without realizing, had caught his collar already.
"Okay, cool it, Brady. She is in the ICU. Fine, anyway." He told me. I let go off him and ran out. I walked out and went through the door boards till I saw Paul standing outside a room that had an ICU sign on it.
"Brady?" Paul reacted.
"Cassie?" I asked him.
"She's inside but…" I pushed past him and stumbled inside through the door. I sighed a sigh of relief as I watched my imprint sleeping soundly and Wayne by her side in a doctor's coat and Carlisle checking the cardiogram.
"How…uh…is she?" I asked.
"She's weak but okay." Wayne told me.
"Then, why do you guys have this cardiogram and stuff here and there?" I asked. Okay, I was freaking out just a bit.
Dude, that's not 'freaking out just a bit'; it's going scared like hell.
Did someone ask you?
"Oh that? Brady, it was a way too powerful attack, you know, even for someone who's mature and she's a kid. She's not been through the maturation and you know it's probably gotten her really weak." Wayne said.
Duh, I could see that. My imprint looked as if someone had sucked her.
"So?" I asked uncertainly.
"She'll be okay soon, enough but…uh…" Carlisle was saying.
"But what?" I asked.
"It would've been better if she could get an element exchange from Louis." Wayne answered.
"So, what's the problem?" I asked.
"Look there." He pointed out of the glass to the door just opposite to the window. Louis was in the same situation as her but even worse because I could see bandages all around his chest.
"Uh, okay." I pulled out the stool by her and sat holding her little cold hand.
(CASSIE'S POV)
I heard the beeping of some machine and then, I could feel the sunlight that was settling on my face. My right hand was in a warm large hand and I almost opened my eyes when I heard:
"Good Morning, sleeping beauty. Seriously, your eyes are almost purple now from the maroon color." This was Brady's warm voice. I smiled weakly. Yeah, right now, I would be nothing of a beauty. I felt weak but it was okay. Something about now was kind of comforting that I was safe now but there was guilt in my heart. Only if I had convinced Theo, maybe...
No, we wouldn't have changed at all. And for some reason, I knew that.
"Where's everyone else?" I asked wearily. "And wait…mom and Rachel and the imprints?"
"Calm down." Brady said. I spotted Wayne in the far corner doing something with the machines.
"Uh…those guys are safe and you know, I kind of told Diana that right now, she shouldn't be around you." Wayne said.
"Why?" I asked him.
"Well, let's just say that you might throw a large enough fit once again in a few days, somewhat like an aftershock." Wayne said. Brady laughed.
"It wasn't funny." I complained. "Where's Louie, by the way?" I had called him Louis because I now knew what he really meant to me.
"Uh…he…" Brady was saying when we heard the door open.
"I'm here." He walked in stumbling through the door.
"Dude, you didn't have to be here like this." Brady said. Louie had bandages all around his chest. I knew this was because of the explosion I had caused.
"No, I wanted to meet her." he insisted.
"Okay, you sit." Brady got Louie to sit on the stool he had been sitting. Something happened strange and really, Brady sat at a corner couch. Wayne left now.
"So…" he shrugged.
"So?" I asked.
"I move around, you don't." he popped his finger on my nose. He was kind of making me get jealous.
"But I don't have bandages around me." I said. "It was because of me, wasn't it?"
"Uh…yeah but it can't be undone and I'm fine, seriously." He said.
"Liar, liar, pants on fire." Brady called.
"Can…uh…I give you my element?" I asked him.
"Are you crazy?! NO!" he shouted. "Ow." He placed his hand on his chest.
"Louie…I know I can. Trust me." I said.
"Look Faith…err…Cassie, it isn't needed, got it?"
"You can call me Faith, I don't mind now."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, I call you Louie now but still why isn't it needed? You look like walking dead."
"I can go on but you'll die even if you try doing something like that, right now. Be healthy first, then give it to me, when it doesn't hurt you, 'kay?" he said.
"So, how long am I staying here?" I asked Brady.
"A week, maybe more." He said.
"Kill me, now." I muttered.
