MORONS
(CASSIE'S POV)
I woke up hearing many disturbances near me. It was as if someone was watching TV near me.
"Shit." Paul cursed hearing something on the news channel. I guess it was the local network.
"That's crazy. Two people down in one day?" this must have been Wayne.
"What happened?" I asked, my voice creaking as I sat up on the couch. God, my neck hurt. I watched what was on the local news channel. A so called dangerous and mysterious 'animal' had killed two girls in one day. The kind of killing was the same and there were no evidences leading except to a thought that both girls had been killed by a 'mysterious and dangerous animal'. They first showed Kelly's dead body in the same scary state I had seen her and then there was another girl. She was a freshman from our school and her name was Natalie Matthews.
"It's Shane. He's doing it." I blurted. Soon after my sentence had finished, the saliva in my mouth dried up.
"How're you so sure?" Amy asked me.
"I saw him! He was there where I found Kelly." I shrieked.
"What led you to Kelly?" Wayne asked me all of a sudden.
"I don't know. I just felt I needed to go there." I answered. "I remember that he said something to me. He said he was waiting for me and he led me there."
"Why did you go alone? Are you an idiot? He could've…" Amy was saying when Wayne shot in.
"Shut up, Amy. Don't scare her more." Wayne shouted.
"No, it's okay." I said. "I faced him. He was like twenty meters away from me. What could scare me more than that?"
"But why did he just go away from you? I mean yeah, it was lucky but…" Wayne said.
"I don't know. I heard Brady calling out to me." I told him. "Where's he?"
"He went for a patrol. Jake's tightening the security." Paul answered me.
"Um…okay." I replied.
So, I decided not to think but when I think I would not think, it makes me think even more. When I think that I'm not thinking, I'm thinking and that makes me think even more.
God, it's confusing!
So, I was just thinking what type of an environment the woods would be having now. I went to sit by the window near the back door and it was dark. I had been limping all the way here and my ankle really hurt. I looked at the clock and it was about 7 o'clock, so that meant I must have been down for a long while. I pictured Brady in his wolf form with Ken and Jared that I was told were on the patrol.
"How long is he on the patrol?" I finally asked Seth who was watching TV.
"He? Who?" he questioned, confused. Hayley smacked him on his arm. I smiled a dry smile.
"Of course, Brady, idiot." She said.
"About five hours and he'll stay on patrol till three o'clock, I guess." Seth told me, not taking his eyes off the football match. The thing was; I was scared. I knew Shane was really-really dangerous and it was really risky to take a chance with him.
"Isn't that like…too long?" I asked him after a long while.
"Nah, I'm going on duty after him…Oh cool! Look tomorrow's an off day." He said after taking a look at the local news channel.
"What for?" Megan appeared in the doorway and asked Seth. I waved to her.
Seth shrugged and then replied, "They're gonna find the mysterious animal who killed both the girls. You know what? That gives us another day."
"This is crazy." Cole answered.
"It's because of me." I said, finally.
"No, it's not, Cassie. It's because of that asshole, Shane. Quit calling yourself the reason of everything." Meg told me.
"I wish that was true." I replied.
"Oh god! You're such a soap opera actress." She said and we all laughed.
Mom got me some snacks that I didn't eat. I felt like throwing up; so food was out of my reach but when you have three shape shifters at your home (Meg, Seth and Cole); food is hard to go waste. Actually, it never goes waste, to be precise. All I wanted was to see Brady fine. Hayley was staying over with me and Meg, Cole and Seth had left for their duty while Quil and Embry went back to their places.
"Aren't you gonna sleep?" Hayley asked after yawning.
"No, not sleepy yet. You go and sleep." I told her.
"Oh, I was just thinking that I'd keep you some company." She said. She looked just like Max does while yawning.
"Go and sleep already, Hales. I know you're worried 'bout me but trust I'll be fine." I told her.
"Sure?" she asked me
"Sure, square." I told her. She went upstairs to the spare room and I saw all of the lights of the house turning down. I went through the photos in my cell phone and started with the oldest ones. The ones when I had gotten myself my new phone. The first one was of the Valentine's Day. It was me and Brady near the same window, then some photos with Marley and I had a shot of Brady where he was laughing and it was a natural laughter when he hadn't noticed I was clicking his picture. It followed on to the pix we had clicked yesterday. Those were some really cute photos. I then started reading Dead Beautiful.
I got startled when the doorbell rang. For a moment I thought it better not to open it. What if it was Shane? But I thought it better to take up the courage and so I went to the door, limping and looked out through the peep through hole. It was Brady. I opened the door and hugged him as tightly as I could.
"Hi…ii?" he was in mid words when I hugged him. "Cass?"
"Thank god, you're back home." I answered.
"Cassie, babe, you weren't supposed to be walking around with a sprained ankle." He said. Aw! He's so cute. Even though he was pretty tired he still cares for me. "Why're you up so late? It's 3 in the morning."
"Who…" I yawned. "…cares?"
"I totally care, Princess Cassidy 'slash' Theodora." He replied. "Let's get you to sleep. C'mon."
"What about you? Ain't you tired? You too need to sleep." I answered, not listening to a word he said.
"I gotta go back home. Mark's on a duty tonight." He told me. "Shane tried to… let it go, anyway."
"He tired to attack your family?" I shrieked.
"Shshsh…shsh." He shushed me with a finger on his lips. "Everyone's sleeping."
"Brady… Shane's…oh my god." I spat. Nothing more came out of my mouth.
"He's not yet hurt anyone. He just comes near them and goes away. He's not doing anything. So, I figured that if he's gonna take revenge from me so…"
"Brady, he's dangerous…"
"I know. But I'm just gonna be there for a while. Don't worry, Paul is here and the others are on a patrol, so don't worry. You're gonna be safe."
"It's not about me or my safety. Your family has nothing to do with Shane. I mean why's he doing this?" I asked.
"Let's get you to sleep." He said and picked me up in his arms.
"Brady, c'mon!" I protested while he took me upstairs. Thank god, everyone was sleeping or they would've known how much I was blushing. He put me on my bed and gave the covers on me. I yawned and Marley climbed beside me to sleep.
"Good night, Princess." He kissed me on my forehead and Marley barked in response. "Good night, Marley." He ruffled Marley and I laughed. Then, he finally left and I went into my dreamland.
"Be gentle. Do not turn it more than the needed angle, Louie." I heard someone say and turned over my side.
"You know how much she moves while sleeping and yet you choose me to do it." Louie fought back.
"What's your problem?" I finally shouted and in the same matter of second, Louie twisted my sprained ankle and before I could shriek, I realized I could move it. I shot up out of my bed.
"LOUIE! YOU MORON! YOU KNOW IF IT WENT WRONG YOU COULD BREAK MY ANKLE!" I shouted. The one who had been giving him the directions was Seth.
"No, it would sprain a bit more leading to breaking of some ligaments but not your whole ankle. There would be an easier surgery than a broken ankle." Seth said. "And it is testified."
I took my pillow and threw it on his face. "Thanks." I said, frustrated. I took the crepe bandage off my ankle and went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. They both left and I took a shower. Sometimes, I really wonder what if Seth and Louie, the two jerks became partners in something. I mean, not now. I totally did see what they both did. They could've broken my ankle anyway but still. They would be two against the world and it would be finished in just a few weeks, where 'it' refers to the world. There was no one for breakfast except me, mom and Marley. Rachel had gone over to Billy's with Max and Paul for a patrol.
"Good morning, honey. Where's your bandage?" mom asked me while giving me my bowl of cereal.
"Oh, Louie twisted my ankle and it's fine now." I told her.
"Oh, it worked!?" she asked, incredulously.
"Yeah, why?" I questioned.
"I told them to do that." Mom replied. Their third partner in crime. Sometimes, I really wish my mom was a normal mom kids have.
"WHAT?!" I screamed.
"What's so 'what' in that? It's a normal way of treating a sprained ankle." She told me and went to the refrigerator. It was empty once again. "I gotta go the supermarket, you coming?"
"Nah, don't feel like." I said, sulking.
"God, you're such a …" she dropped her voice. "Wanna go over to Brady's?"
I spat the milk in my mouth. My mom is really weird at times.
"Okay, that aside but why don't you let me stay alone at home for a while?" I questioned.
"I don't think leaving you alone is a really good idea, Cassie. You wanna come or not? Besides, I could go and meet Mon. It's been days since we met."
"Who's Mon?"
"Monica, his mom." Mom replied.
"Why are you calling her that?" I asked.
"Can't we be friends? God, you need to go into the CIA. You're really skeptical." Mom said. So, this was her exact plan. Mom wanted to meet Monica because they both have become great friends. I don't know how even though I have a few theories. Mom maybe loved to call her to check upon me and his mom wanted to know more about me. Their choices are some so here we are OR they became friends when I was with Theo. Anyway, a few minutes' drive got us to their home. I rolled my eyes. Not that I don't like her. I really do. She's really caring about her kids but it's going to be a bit awkward to see my mom getting best friends with my boyfriend's mom. I went to the door and rung the bell. Mark came to open the door.
"Wasn't your ankle sprained?" he asked me.
"Good morning to you too, Mark." I said.
"Hey! Mrs. Lahote!" he waved to mom. So, I don't have any value, do I? I pushed him aside and went in.
"Hey, Mrs. Fuller." I called and smiled. I really liked her because she treated me like her own daughter.
"Hi, Cassie. How are you now… honey? Brady told me you had a sprained ankle?" she asked me, confused.
"Oh, that? Louie and Seth treated it this morning. My mom's prescription." I told her. Mom came in and they did a meet and greet. Mark grabbed his pancakes and ate. Now, I get why my mom never forgets to ask about his mom and his mom, about my mom.
"Weren't you on a patrol, Mark?" I asked him.
"Yeah, came back a few minutes ago." He replied.
"You seem energized." I said.
"Something blew my mind." he answered, happily. God, he was blushing. MARK FULLER WAS BLUSHING!
"What happened?" I asked.
"Ronnie and I..." he was saying.
"She wasn't that kinda girl, was she?" I asked, disbelievingly. How did she?
"Shut up and listen, idiot. She kissed me, on my cheek though…but I loved it." He told me. I laughed at myself.
"Where's your brother?" I asked him.
"Poor guy's sleeping yet." He told me. It was 11:30 by now, about noon. I woke up about a couple of hours ago, at 9:30, I guess. I know how much he would've been tired.
"Kids, we're going to the supermarket. Anyone wants to come?" Monica asked.
"Nah, great here." We both answered in unison. "Cassie's gonna help me with homework." Mark added. What has he planted in his head?
"Yeah, sure." I said, nodding. How much do you love it if you find someone of your age to be friends with! That's the case with our moms and it turns out, that they were pass outs from the same university as Mark told me.
"You're doing your homework. Are you okay?" I questioned, incredulously.
"You think?" he countered. "I thought I would do you some good. You helped me be friends with Ronnie, so I could get you some alone time with my brother. You could do whatever you want, I would leave."
"Shut up, Mark!" I shouted, getting what he meant. "You know what? Let me get this your way. I am too young for this, okay?"
"God, you don't need to get that offended. I know you're a good Christian girl." Mark told me. Why didn't I consider going with those two?
"Mark, you're really impossible." I said. "Go and wake him up. It's 11:45." I finally changed the topic.
"Why don't you do that?" he said, turning on the TV. One fact about Mark: he never budges from the TV if he has turned it on. I rolled my eyes and went upstairs. I know Brady comes to wake me up but going into his room just like that seems a bit…weird. I mean…oh, shut up! It's okay. I went inside to see Brady sleeping on his totally wrecked bed. His room was way too untidy at the given moment. Not that I mind it much because it was a normal untidy- no razors, no smelly socks, no boxers and no porn (which I know he doesn't read or see anyway). He was sleeping with his face on the pillow and the covers half off. I realized he wasn't wearing a t-shirt. I didn't have Marley with me who usually wakes me up by licking me so, I knew I could shake him awake which I did after I went to his side.
"Brady, wake up. It's almost 12." I said.
"URGH! Let me sleep. I came back from my patrol at 3 in the morning, mom." He muttered, under the covers, sleepily.
"Brady, it's not your mom, it's me." I replied, laughing. He half opened his eyes sleepily.
"I love my dreams sometimes." He said, clicked the tip of my nose and kept his head in my lap and took the covers on himself.
"It's not a dream, Brownie. I'm here for real." I answered.
"Shut up and sleep with me, Cassie." He replied and pulled me to the bed.
"No, you weirdo." I countered.
"I meant, lie here for a while, smartass." He told me. He held me as if I were his teddy bear, not that I minded it. It was kind of cute the way he was cuddling me. He moved his face into my hair. "You had a head bath?"
"Yeah." I answered.
"Your ankle?" he asked.
"Louie and Seth twisted it." I replied.
"THOSE MORONS!" he shouted, opening his eyes wide.
"No, it's better." I said.
"Yeah, it better be better or I would've beaten them into cream of wheat." He muttered in my hair. "Jeez, it's a pretty good fragrance, ya know."
"You're worse than Louie when you're sleepy." I said.
"Weren't you saying that you guys are too young to…?" Mark stood in the doorway with his arm crossed on his chest.
"Shut up, dickhead. We're not doing anything!" Brady got up straight and threw a pillow on his face. I had gotten way too red, both with embarrassment and anger.
"Both of you are just too much, seriously." I said and stormed downstairs.
We just lazed around for another two hours, doing nothing more than watching TV with Mark. Sometimes, these brothers go really crazy while watching a football match and if you are sitting on the same couch with them (when they are both sitting together); it's the toughest task to keep up with your seat. They both keep shouting and jumping on the couch and you wonder what happened wrong. They usually come up with the same comments about the players and at the same time. No wonder I wanted to have a painkiller for my head. Then, we switched to Avatar. It was the 20th time I was watching it with Brady and the first time with Mark. Mark took this way too seriously even though I knew he had watched it before. He took it more as something happening around him which drove me crazy. I decided to listen to some music to calm my nerve. Fortunately, I had my earphones in my pocket but not my phone. Brady's cell phone, as usual, was nowhere to be found, so I took Mark's phone. The only type of music he had was heavy metal and disturbing stuff. Our moms were still nowhere in sight just as Brady's phone.
"Aren't you gonna go and take a shower or something?" I asked Brady.
"Why? Am I really stinking?"He questioned while eating the popcorn.
"No, I thought it's a healthy habit." I answered, ironically.
"Oh, the irony kills me." he answered. I rolled my eyes. "Kidding. I took one before going for the patrol."
"Wasn't that like 16 hours ago?" I said.
"Fine. I'm going, happy?" he said. Wow, I was really nagging him about something for once.
Our moms didn't come for long and it was evening. There left a message that they went for shopping to Port Angeles. So, one way, they were safe. Brady and I decided to go out somewhere for a while since I was feeling pretty claustrophobic. We went to the beach to enjoy the evening sun. Even though it was chilly since it was autumn but I was having fun walking with him, hand-in-hand. But little did I know that it was short lived. Brady got a phone call (we found his phone under the couch) that scared him but he didn't say anything to me and I didn't know what it was. He dropped me to Wayne's.
"Where are you going?" I asked him.
"I'll be back soon. But you are not getting out of the house." He said and took a peck at my lips.
"But?" I managed but he was gone.
