Chapter 17: The Big Wedding
Morticia's POV
After just a couple weeks of planning, my little girl's getting married…I can't believe it's true…I promised myself I wasn't going to cry...
"Wednesday, you look beautiful." Alice says.
"Thank you, Mrs. Beineke."
"Please, Wednesday, I've told you to call me Alice."
"Alright…Alice."
"Where are the rings?" Alice asks.
"Pugsley has them...hopefully he hasn't lost them." Wednesday says.
"I certainly hope not." I place a black veil on Wednesday's head.
"I remember the day your mother and father got married." mama says as she enters.
"That was a very chaotic experience."
"The second one wasn't." Wednesday puts finishing touches on her makeup.
"True."
"Is everyone decent?" Gomez asks after knocking.
"Yes, darling, come in."
He walks in, tears beginning to well in his eyes when he sees Wednesday, "You look beautiful, Paloma, just like your mother." he says.
"Thank you, father."
"We've just gotten the harpsichord down to the cemetery; we're ready to begin when you are."
Wednesday nods and everyone begins to make their way down to the cemetery.
Gomez's POV
Lucas and Wednesday are getting married. For real this time. Fester and I have summoned our beloved ancestors to join the celebration (Wednesday and Lucas decided they should be the bridesmaids and groomsmen, Lurch is up in front sitting at his harpsichord, and we're about to begin. Soon the music starts, and Lucas and Alice are on their way down the aisle, then our ancestors. Just as they are beginning to walk down, Wednesday and I link arm in arm.
"This is it, father."
"Yes. I can't say this enough, you're going to be Thursday before we know it." I say.
Wednesday chuckles softly. I really can't believe it. It seems like yesterday she was born, then the next day she's grown up and getting married. I remember the day we had a pretend wedding for her and Lucas. Now, here we are, doing it for real. I'm just... happy... but sad at the same time. I shall be happy, forever and completely happy. And a tiny bit sad.
"You're growing up." I say.
"And you're cool with that?" Wednesday asks.
"Yes…and no. There are so many memories. Starting from the moment you were born. Sometimes when I look at you, I see a little baby, with fuzzy black hair. Then you're five years old and going to school for the first time. I have a Full Disclosure. I wanted to turn around and take you right back home. But I didn't. Then you and Lucas started to date. I think "Where did the years go?" and I am sad. Now, I look at you. And see this lovely young woman... and I am happy…happy/sad." I say.
Then the Bridal march begins and Wednesday and I are soon walking down the aisle. When we get up to Lucas, I place her hand in his.
"There is a question that is customary for me to ask. Does anyone here object to this ceremony taking place?" Uncle Imar asks.
No one raises their hand.
"Who represents this woman in holy matrimony?" he asks.
"Her mother and I do." I say.
Uncle Imar nods and I sit next to Morticia, who is already crying. Our little girl is growing up. I, too, begin to cry, though I promised myself I wouldn't.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here tonight, to join Lucas Beineke and Wednesday Addams in holy matrimony. Now, if the bride and groom will hold hands."
Lucas and Wednesday hold hands and gaze into each other's eyes.
"Wednesday, do you take Lucas Beineke to be your lawfully wedded husband? For better or for worse, for richer or for poor, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"
"I do." Wednesday says, looking into Lucas's eyes, smiling.
"Lucas, do you take Wednesday Addams to be your lawfully wedded wife? For better or for worse, for richer or for poor, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?"
"I do." Lucas says, also smiling, looking into Wednesday's eyes.
"By the power vested in me in the state of New York, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Lucas and Wednesday kiss, and we stand and applaud.
Lucas and Wednesday turn and face us.
"Allow me to present, Mr. and Mrs. Lucas Beineke." Uncle Imar says.
Lucas and Wednesday walk up the aisle, followed by everyone else and with that, the ceremony is over.
"My little girl is married... I still can't believe it." Morticia says, still crying, hugging Wednesday tight.
"It's ok, mom. Lucas and I will only be a block away. You can visit anytime…as long as you call first." Wednesday says.
Morticia nods, letting go.
We have the reception, and soon, Wednesday and Lucas leave on their honeymoon. And, as always, we embrace the darkness, as well as welcome in the new, the pain, and the unknown.
