There are old people in there, Ruby Castello from literature studies who won the first McKinley High Hunger Games. And Kitty. Why did she never tell us she went to McKinley? Puck was devastated. When we got to the hotel he locked himself in his room and cried. Britt and I have decided to leave the kids with her parents. We've got a lie ready to tell them, anything's better than the truth, and Brittany's going to find a way to tell them when, no, if, no, it's a when, I die. This isn't like last time, I haven't got a chance. Britt and I are on our way to pick them up from school, this is the hardest part, pretending it's all fine.
"Mami! Mama!" Sky and Ella shriek as we pick them up from their play group. We pick them up and spin them around before heading to Marcus' school. When they're all in the car Brittany breaks the news
"So you guys are going to be spending a little bit of time at your Grandma's house"
"How long?" Sky asks
"We don't know but me and mama have to go away for a while" I tell them
"Why?" Ella asks
"Some of your mami's old friends in England want to see us" Brittany lies "We can't take you guys but we'll be back before you know it." I nod
"Okay" Marcus says
"Good boy" Brittany tells him. They pull up outside Brittany's parent's house and Santana gets out the car first so she can explain it to them. She knocks on the door and the second they see her standing there they pull her into a hug. Brittany's parents have been hers as well ever since she ran away from her own.
"I got reaped." She tells them, like it was necessary "Can you look after the kids while it's going on? I don't want them to find out."
"Of course we can." Susan, Brittany's mum tells her
"Good luck Santana" Her dad, David tells me sincerely, I nod and fetch the kids from the car. I try not to cry in front of them but the second we turn the corner away from the house I break down sobbing. And Brittany pulls over, wrapping her arms around me
"I'm so sorry" she tells me
"Why?"
"I feel like it's my fault."
"How?" I ask, it's not her fault
"Because if I hadn't been reaped then you wouldn't have volunteered"
"You can't control being reaped."
"I could have left the glee club."
"I wouldn't let you do that." I tell her, she pauses
"If it happened again would you still volunteer?"
"Every time." I tell her truthfully
"Even if you knew this would happen?"
"I'd rather me than you." Brittany sniffs
"You've made me cry now" She giggles sadly "I shouldn't be crying. You're the one going into this."
"You're always allowed to cry." I tell her "Don't ever forget that Brittany."
"Alice didn't cry last time."
"Alice is tough. She hides her emotions, you can never tell with her."
"She was hurting." Brittany tells me, I nod "She spent most of her time holding me as I cried. I was so ashamed" Her eyes start to glass over "She was a child, I was eighteen."
"She had to grow up early on. It shouldn't have happened but we can't help it."
"I just wish I could be braver. Like you."
"You don't want to be like me Britt"
"Sometimes I do. You're strong Santana, if anyone can get through this you can."
"What if I can't?" I ask her
"Then I'll always remember you." Both of us are crying now. She switches off the engine and pulls me across onto her lap. The next morning we wake up in the car, one day closer till the end. Mind you, if you look at it one way, you always are.
...
Sorry if it's a bit boring right now but I'm still sort of setting the scene. It should be a bit more like the original eventally with some things Paralell to the original book (Catching Fire)
