Chapter 6: Parade
"Where are they?" Quinn asks the rest of the club, they're lounging around the living room of their hotel floor thing (each tribute and their team get a full floor of a massive hotel)
"They were dropping the monsters at Brittany's parents yesterday afternoon so they could have stopped off somewhere." Alice tells them
"Well they need to get back soon cause this building's about to go into lockdown" Puck warns, the president has decided to lock up the hotel so none of the tributes can escape. At McKinley there was no way out, once you start at the school you can't leave, siblings have to go there and no one else knew about the games. The door opens and Santana and Brittany both walk in
"Finally!" Quinn exclaims "Where were you?"
"Nowhere" They both say
"Well you got back just in time cause this place is going into lockdown." Mercedes tells them
"Opening ceremony today" Rachel comments, Santana nods
"Should I be me or what?"
"Be you," Alice says "It'll make a change
"Yes!" Santana celebrates "God weakness is draining." Alice laughs
"I have you a dress Santana" Kurt announces
"It's been like two days. How the hell did you do that?"
"I started the moment I heard about the games." He tells her "If you're going out there you're going to go out looking fabulous" He opens up his bag and pulls out a shining black dress
"What happened to music?" She asks
"Just put it on." She walks into the bathroom and comes out a few minutes later in the dress. It's figure hugging, down to her mid-thigh and sparkles in the light "Press the button" He tells her
"What button?" He looks at her wrist before rolling his eyes and pulling out a black bracelet with a music note attached on the top. In the centre of it is what looks like a jewel but from closer inspection you can see it's a small button. Santana puts it on her wrist before pressing the button. Everyone else gasps "What?" She asks, moving to the mirror before gasping herself. The simple dress has been transformed literally at the push of a button. Music notes circle the dress, weaving in, out and around each other, changing colour between black and white. "How did you do that?" She asks Kurt
"Latest technology" He tells her "The fashion industry has its perks"
"So cool" Alice says, taking pictures with the camera she takes everywhere. She enjoys acting like her sister but photography is also a big passion of hers.
"You ready?" Brittany asks her, placing a hand on her wife's lower back
"Do I have a choice?" Santana chuckles, moving back to sit on the sofa
"Don't sit down!" Kurt tells her
"Why?"
"Because you'll crease the dress!" Santana rolls her eyes and leans on the wall
"I need to do your hair" Kurt tells her
"Can I sit down?"
"No!"
"Ugh fine." Santana turns around as Kurt pulls her hair up into a bun, leaving a few choice strands hanging down and lightly curling them
"Beautiful" He tells her, she starts to walk away. "Hey! I haven't even done your makeup yet!"
"This feels weird standing up." She tells him as he starts messing with her face, highlighting the dark brown in her eyes, making them spark with confidence, the complete opposite of what they were going for last time.
…
SANTANA POV:
I walk to my carriage. Around me I see the other tributes. They're mostly socialising, not like at my last games but then again none of the people in this room are scared, they'll go out strong. I try to keep from getting to know my opponents, just standing there stroking my horse but it doesn't work. I hear a crunching by my ear and turn around to see Owen, a double-double Olympic gold medallist in swimming at age twenty-four, wearing only a pair of skin-tight speedos which leave nothing to the imagination. Owen won the fortieth Hunger Games at only age fourteen and is therefore only a year older than me. His sea green eyes seem to be piercing into my soul. It's disturbing.
"Hey Santana" He drawls in his thick southern accent, "Wanna sugar cube?"
"Those are for the horses." I tell him, glaring
"Well they have years to eat sugar. If we see something sweet we have to take it while we still have the time" He smiles, I glare at him again "Geez you're hostile."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning I prefer it to the weak little girl I saw at the beginning of your last games." He smiles again
"Stop smiling so much you look like a mental patient." I tell him before I can stop myself
"You're awfully on edge"
"Well I have a wife, my sister and three children who I'm leaving behind so what do you expect?"
"Sorry" He tells her, smile gone "I just forget that people have others who care about them."
"People care about you"
"Hardly, not like you."
"You're an Olympian" I point out
"Means shit." He says bluntly,
"Well what are you going to do with all your money?"
"I stopped dealing in money years ago" He tells me "People pay me with their secrets"
"Wow." I say sarcastically
"You have any secrets for me?"
"Umm… No."
"Yeah most people don't" He jokes, I smile at him briefly "I knew you could smile! Looks good on you."
"Well I'm not smiling out there." I tell him bluntly, scowl back on
"Noor are any of us. None of us want to go back there"
"We don't have a choice, even if they stop it part way through some of us will still be dead" He nods in agreement and holds out his hand again
"Now, do you want a sugar cube?" I shake my head, I still don't trust him. I don't trust any of these people. After he's walked off Quinn comes up, I was allowed to choose one member of my support system to be backstage, I would have chosen Brittany but her and Alice need each other.
"What did Owen want?"
"Well he offered me sugar and wanted to know all my secrets"
"Does he know you're gay?"
"Well I said wife, sister and kids so assuming he's not an idiot…"
"Yeah you're safe" She tells me. The music start signalling us to get on our carts "Good luck!" She tells me as I switch myself on. Heads swivel in my direction, I can already tell I'm going to be the highlight of this.
Bruce, the football player, goes out first in basically the McKinley football kit. I guess his designer isn't as talented as Kurt. After Keira from dancing comes out in a glittering leotard like one of the ones the Olympic gymnasts wear, she looks nice and the makeup is great but something tells me her designer didn't have very much time either. Hockey's Ben is also in kit. It seems that the all-boys sport teams have problems with finding good designers. The rest of them go by quite fast, only a few really sticking out; forty-seven year old Lilly from the orchestra looking like a one man marching band, forty-five year old ex-ice-skating champ Fiona, struggling to stand on her skates, she hasn't worn a pair in years, Owen, somehow strutting whilst standing still, obnoxiously confident, and May from girls soccer who seems to be the only girl that was dragged into wearing her kit, scowling, apparently not impressed. May is in the cart before me and as I'm pulled out people gasp, I look up at the big screen where I'm shown and smirk. I own this. People barely even notice Kitty coming out behind me. Puck does. I look up into the audience and see the pain in his eyes. We form the usual circle around the stage only in a different order to the way they did it at McKinley.
"Presenting the tributes of The First American Hunger Games!" He says, people applaud. It's not like they know what he's talking about. He goes on to say a bit but he never once mentions what The Hunger Games are. I mean, he wouldn't want it to be stopped before he killed people would he? I look around me a he talks. I thought that parading kids being sent to their deaths round in costumes was cruel but it turns out that old people doing it just makes it sad.

Okay so now we're starting to get some parrellels with the book! How many can you spot?
