Chapter 4

So sorry for the time it took, I am really busy actually, it doesn't mean I have lost my motivation, it's just that I don't have a lot of free time. I hope you'll like this chapter yet.

Home, Sweet Home

It didn't take really long to find the delivery man; sadly he wasn't able to provide any information that could be useful to the team, so they just let him go. Prentiss had been assigned to the investigation and Jordan Todd would be here too, they would meet in Bangor. The notebook had finally been returned to the team, one hair and digital prints had been found between pages and the lab still had to analyse it.

The team was in the jet, Elle and Gideon were reading the stories in it, searching for anything interesting while Reid, Hotch and Morgan were focusing on the information Garcia provided on Marc Potter, they would study the files about Gary Michael once at the police station, because some had never been typed and only existed on paper. JJ was also contacting every person who was close to Gary, she asked Reid the name of the farmer who proposed them to work for him, he was called Lloyd March.

Gideon and Elle were both stunned by the stories they were reading. It wasn't bad at all on narrative but it was very dark. Children weren't always thinking about candies, pretty bunnies and flowers, sure they all liked spooky stories but those ones weren't just spooky. Even them who were FBI agents were a little creped out by it. They were currently reading one written by Jordan Todd, about a man killing the turtledoves he raised:

He loved them and more of all; he liked to watch them die. To him, watching a turtledove dying by having her throat sliced was the most beautiful thing in the world. One day a little girl came in town. She had a pet; it was a beautiful turtledove, and the prettiest the man ever saw.

The story told how the man took that turtledove one night, but the little saw him and followed him in secret to have her pet back. The man stopped her from taking the bird back with her and imprisoned her in a basement. He made her starve for days and one day, he killed her and her turtledove among the roses of his garden.

She looked beautiful in the middle of the flower, her throat sliced and her dead bird resting on her stomach. He took a picture when suddenly he heard a scream. The girl's mom was putting small posters and she was walking around when she saw her dead little girl in the man's garden. She ran to her little girl, her heart broken as she held her daughter in her arms. The killer looked at her, she was beautiful, maybe the loveliest woman he ever saw. She cried so much and looked at the man who did that.

"Monster!" She screamed, "You killed my daughter!"

She ran to him to kill him but he fled toward the house. There he took a knife and when the mother ran toward him to kill him, he planted the knife in her stomach. She looked at him in the eyes before dying and then, the man realised he was in love with her. She could have been his wife, and the girl his daughter, they would have shared the same love for turtledoves. He cried, understanding what he had done.

"All I could have loved!" Screamed he

He took the knife and stabbed himself in the heart with it. Since that day, if you go in the house, you can hear turtledoves even if you don't see any, a little girl singing, a woman crying and a man begging for forgiveness.

The End.

Elle looked at Gideon but didn't dare to say anything for now, Reid was too close. When they finally landed, Reid was greeted by the sight of Jordan Todd and Emily Prentiss waiting for him. He smiled delightfully; it had been a long time since they saw each others. The two women went to him and hugged their friend.

"It's so good to see you girls," said Reid with a voice laced with emotion

"I am so happy to see you, genius," said Jordan.

"You look great," said Prentiss while looking at him, "still thin but not as much as before."

The team was looking at the exchange; most of them couldn't help but wonder how Reid could have been thinner than this. Hotch extended his hand and introduced himself and the team.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," said Prentiss.

"Let's go to the police station, we will talk about this, I want you and miss Todd to tell me what you remember of Marc Potter."

They all went in SUV, Reid went with Jordan and Emily, Gideon, Hotch and Elle drove together while Derek and JJ followed them. Spencer was happy to be alone with his childhood friends.

"I am sorry to see you under such circumstances," murmured he.

"I don't like it much either, but it's better than nothing I guess," replied Prentiss.

"There is something I wonder, Spence," said Jordan, "what do they know about our past?"

This question had bothered her during the entire ride. She didn't want her life exposed to some people she didn't know.

"We can't avoid it," answered he, "they were reading the notebook in the plane, they think…"

"They can't! It's our privacy!"

"Sadly privacy isn't really a preoccupation during an investigation, they think they'll find hints in the notebook," explained Emily.

"It doesn't make me happy either," continued Spencer, "but we don't have the choice and it may finally give us an answer and opportunity to catch the one who took Gary."

This was enough to convince Jordan. They had always been close to him and for years she had nightmares about him. It could be a relief to know what happened. The three of them were dying to finally confront the one who took their friend away. This person, whoever they were, had haunted them for a long time. Once they were in the police station the team settled here. The sheriff came to greet them.

"Sherriff Mc Ferson, I am glad to see you here," while shaking Gideon's hand.

"Hi, I'm agent Gideon, Hotchner, Greenaway, Morgan, Jareau, doctor Reid and Prentiss…"

"Reid? Spencer Reid?" Interrupted the Sherriff quite surprised.

"In the flesh," replied Reid coldly.

The man suddenly looked uneasy, the team wondered why. Reid, Jordan and Emily were throwing death glares at him. Gideon continued, deciding he would talk to him later.

"And this is doctor Jordan Todd, a civilian who will be around as a consultant and witness."

"Alright, hum…Mrs Potter is here and her husband body at the morgue."

Hotch wanted to interrogate her before Jordan and Emily, he told Reid to come along while Gideon went to the morgue with Emily, Morgan, JJ and Elle would interrogate some of Potter's friends. Morgan looked at Elle, she seemed concerned about something. He told that to Jenifer who suggested that they should talk to her before interviewing the victim's friend.

"Something seems to bother you Elle," said Derek.

"What do you know of Reid's past except for what he just told us?"

"Not much," replied Morgan

"Neither do I, why?" Asked JJ

"Because we were reading these stories and happy kids would not write such things. Here, take a look."

She handed them the notebook and they read one of the short stories written by Reid, it was about a demon who would capture children, beat them and enslave them. JJ was immediately creped by this. They also read a story by Emily about a dead wolf avenging himself from the hunters who killed him and his family.

"They weren't kids when they wrote that…I mean they couldn't, children don't make up such things," murmured JJ.

"They were. The writing is typical of children but it's true it's very dark…" said Morgan

"What are you doing?"

They all turned to see Reid watching them and he looked quite angry. The three of them felt like kids caught with their hand in the cookie jar. They were glad there weren't a lot of cops around, and the few working here weren't paying attention.

"We were just reading one of your stories."

"Really? To find hints?"

"Reid," began Elle, "your friends and you, were you…happy as kids?"

"Not really," replied he.

A short silence followed and for some seconds, Reid hated them, because they were slowly discovering the misery he had been through with Emily, Jordan and Gary.

"What do you mean?" asked Morgan.

"If you wonder if we were getting beaten or not, yes we were, all of us. Emily, Jordan and I, we all suffered but Gary was…"

He stopped there; he didn't want to talk about it, even if he knew it would come a moment or another. He couldn't describe Gary's martyr or his own suffering as a kid. It wouldn't be so hard to tell that to Gideon or Hotch but not to them, his teammate thought he was weak and it wouldn't be better if they heard details about his past life. They knew enough already.

"What happened to you?" asked JJ gently.

"That is none of your concern," said Reid bluntly before leaving the room.

It didn't matter anymore; they could read the whole notebook because their opinion was carved in stone now. He hoped they wouldn't harass Emily or Jordan with questions however.

Elle, JJ and Morgan looked at each others. They were feeling bad about what they did even if they weren't really guilty of anything. This investigation obliged them to read this notebook but they had done it in a way which was more a morbid curiosity than professional interest. They decided to go forward and do their interviews.
