Chapter 3
It was the strangest thing, watching the two women remain motionless on the ground. Kuroune hovered over the unidentified female as Youko remained on high alert. Something wasn't right here and he'd be damned if he let anything happen to these two. He glanced over toward Kuroune who was observing the mikos' friend quite closely, his face unreadable. Youko decided to leave him be and wondered whether they should snatch the females or leave them here.
Kuronue spoke, breaking Youko from his line of thoughts, "Youko, look at what the miko has around her neck."
Peeved at the bat demon for looking at the miko so closely, Youko made his way over nonetheless. Lighting up the mikos flawless skin with a little pink glow was the Shikon No Tama, crouching down next to her he couldn't believe his eyes. This miko, was the Guardian of the Jewel? He was careful not to touch the her as he slowly reached for the Jewel. His fingers were so close to it he could feel them tingle with the possibility of power and just when he thought the jewel was his, he was made a fool.
The Jewel lashed at him sending a jolt of electricity up his spin and tossing him a few feet back. Curious, Youko rested on his heels as he watched the wind tease the grass around the beautiful duo. Just then an arrow whizzed right by him, narrowly missing his head. Standing up with Kuronue in tow his eyes landed upon another woman dressed in the garbs of a priestess.
Behind her stood what looked like hundreds of lifeless warriors fully equipped and ready to fight.
"There's been a barrier placed around us Youko" Kuroune acknowledge.
The sky was beginning to fade into gray as storm clouds drew into the field. It was the priestess who spoke up first, "Hand over the girls, they are of no concern of yours."
Youko frowned, how annoying.
She appeared to look just like the Guardian of the Jewel but older, colder. Her scent was repulsive, nothing like the vanilla that has been gracing his sense. She reeked of clay and bones. Kuroune's chuckle rose no reaction from the woman as Youko flexed his claws in response to her demand, "No."
The imposter rose a delicate hand as the sleeve of her priestess garbs fell down her wrist, revealing pale skin. Kuronue watched her closely when the realization dawned on him, "Youko, I sense no heartbeat, she's a walking corpse."
As the wind picked up, the miko stirred, alarming both the corpse and Youko. As quickly as she stirred she was getting up onto her feet, her companion still unconscious and unresponsive.
"Did you really think that spell would work, Kikyo?" Kagome taunted the other as she stretched. Although the scene that unfolded before Youko showed two women who mirrored one another, Kagome's beauty was ethereal compared to that of the woman identified as Kikyo.
"Apparently it did. If it weren't for those demons your throat would have been slit and the jewel gone" Kikyo smoothly replied. "As for your friend, if you're not careful she may never wake up. The witch Brujatsu created this spell just for you two. Though it wasn't powerful enough to subdue you into a dreamless sleep for centuries, I'm sure the demon slayer is beyond help now."
Sliding into an offensive position Kagome was swift and precise, drawing an arrow and aiming towards the sky she let her arrow fly. It was engulfed in a pink light as it collided with the barrier and shattered it.
She turned to Kuronue with a face that promised death if he did not obey her, "There is a village south of here, take her there. They'll know what to do."
Kuronue was speechless, "How do you know you can trust me?" Kagome cocked another arrow onto her bow and shot, aiming this time towards Kikyo, "I just know I can. Now go."
Youko remained with his arms crossed the whole time. He was surprised the miko would trust a demon she didn't know with her companion. He was also surprised that her enemy was a priestess, who was dead and looked very similar to her.
"Priestess, what are you getting yourself into? Do you assume that I will fight with you?"
The miko turned towards Youko, a warm smile on her face shocking Youko, "I don't care what you do."
Youko's jaw tensed as he tried to control himself from taking the miko right then and there. Already forgetting about his presence Kagome was shooting arrow after arrow turning the lifeless bodies into ash, releasing their captured souls. Her movements were quick and strategic but she was clearly out numbered. The bodies surrounded Kikyo as she slowly began to make her escape; her whole plan was based off Kagome and Sango not waking, she knows she lost this one. What exactly was her goal always, Youko wondered. As exciting as it was to see the Miko in action he wanted to show her what he was capable of as well.
With the gray clouds came an onslaught of rain. It was as though time moved slowly as Kagome slid through the mud, slicing the puppets in half as Youko's whip flew above her head. They harmonize on the battle field, never being in one another's way. Their enemies numbers decreased exponentially as the rain soaked the two. Kikyo's face appeared emotionless as she registered the relevance of the kitsune to her reincarnation. She frowned at his resemblance to Inuyasha. It appeared that her double has found a companion within someone other than the half demon. The thought made Kikyo displeased as she watched Youko defend Kagome's back and slaughter another group of her mindless mannequins.
Youko continued to wield his whip, dismantling 10 bodies with a flick of his wrist. The fight was tedious, only one of the puppets came close to reaching him. There were only a handful left when he smelt her. Turning his head towards the miko she was kneeled down as she held her shoulder, blood elegantly sipping through her fingers. Her nose was crinkled and her breathing ragged but she remained conscious and as stubborn as ever. Grabbing the katana from the ground, she stood her ground and decapitated the enemy that dared to injure her. With one more flick of his wrist, the rest of the puppets were destroyed and they were the only two left in the field.
It was eerily quiet; Kagome remained upright and still, her eyes had closed as the wind played with her hair. The rain ceased and the sky began to clear up. It was as though the gray clouds were floating away along with all of the ashes. Youko knew this wasn't the time but she was so breathtakingly beautiful. He knew he'd be damned if he ever let her get away. Opening her eyes, Kagome looked over her shoulder at the silver demon. Blue clashed with gold and she smiled as she turned to walk away, her blood still flowing but not faltering her movements.
Youko was next to her within seconds, "Where are you going? You are injured."
She glanced up at him thoughtfully and replied like it was the most obvious thing in the world, "I'm going to my village where Kaede should be giving Sango some herbs to stall the spell from completely engulfing Sango. Also, you can just call me Kagome, geeze." She caught him off guard when she teasingly pushed him. Her tone was so light and her actions genuine.
The wind kept teasing him with her sweet scent and her hair tickled his arm. He almost wanted to rip her to shreds she was practically unbearable to be around. The village was almost in view when Youko heard Kuronue's laugh followed by some loud cursing. Before he knew it Kagome had taken off in a sprint pulling out her bow. Kuroune had just come into view when Kagome shot. Youko stopped behind her hoping Kuronue would dodge but the arrow missed the bat demon and pierced a half demon instead.
The dog demon hissed as the arrow lodge itself into his shoulder. His clawed hand reached up and snapped the arrow as his angry eyes searched for Kagome.
"Oyi, what the fuck was that for?! This dumb bat demon comes prancing into the village like he owns it with an unconscious Sango and I get shot with an arrow!" Inuyasha's voice rang loud and clear within the village, attracting more attention than Kagome would have like.
Inuyasha huffed as he pulled the arrow from his shoulder, "and you go ahead and bring another demon! Who do you think you are, Wench!"
Before Kagome could do anything the half demon was up against the tree with Youko's claws around his neck, "You speak to her that way again and I will kill you" growled Youko, his jaw tense.
Kuronue's eyes shined with delight at Youko's unusual behavior, he couldn't even hold back his smile. This miko has done something to his companion and he cannot wait to make fun of him for it.
"Now Youko, no need to be so protective, he's my oldest companion with a nasty mouth. He's harmless. Now, I've got to help Sango so I'll be back in a few minutes. Kuroune can you bring me some water from the river? Inuyasha, behave or I swear I'll sit you into the next era."
Kagome was too smooth as she retreated into a nearby hut as Inuyasha grumbled. Youko was as curious about her now as ever before. Following her into the hut he recognized her companion from earlier. He also noticed Kagome hovering over her as her hands glowed a light pink.
"Kaede, the spell is worse than I thought. Kuroune is heading in with water make sure to keep Sango's temperature down as I start to work."
The older lady with an eye patch nodded in acknowledgement as Kuroune entered the hunt.
"Ye must be Kuroune, please bring that bucket ni," Kuroune obeyed and watched silently as Kaede wet a rag and went to work as Kagome completely engulfed Sango's body in pink.
Kuroune was hypnotized by the beauty that radiated off of the unknown woman. His hair stood on end with the thought of touching her flawless skin. Every movement she made was unnerving; he was almost worried she'd never wake again. He couldn't help but think, what a weird spell to cast upon these ladies. The sun was high in the sky when Kagome stood up, shaking both demons out of their thoughts.
She wiped the sweat off her forehead as she smiled, "Got it."
As soon as she spoke Sango began to stir. Her brown eyes were wide open and she sat up immediately, rubbing the back of her head. She looked up at Kagome sheepishly, "How'd I get back to the village? No way did that demon knock me out. Did I miss anything?"
Kagome couldn't help the big smile on her face on having successfully saved her best friend, "You were unconscious but it wasn't from Kuronue. Kikyo made another attempt at our lives but was unsuccessful."
Sango was up now as she stretched, Kuronue couldn't help but wonder how these girls had as much energy as they did. Kagome's wound was still bleeding and she has yet to acknowledge it.
It was Sango who noticed Kagome's wound and then the two demons.
"Kami, Kagome. They were just attacking us and now you bring them to our village? Not just that but you're bleeding. You're too careless sometimes!" Sango's lecture fell on deaf ears as Kagome waved her off and walked out of the hut, leaving a displeased companion behind.
"Kagome-sama!" Miroku greeted," Is everything well with Sango? Has she woken up?" He looked like hell and his shoulders were slouched with the weight of the thought that this was somehow his fault.
"Yeah she's fine Miroku, do you know where Shippou is?"
"Kagomeeeeee!" Shippou cooed as he jumped from the roof of one hut and darted straight into her arms. "You were gone for so long! Inuyasha was getting worried but then that bat demon showed up and so he just got really angry instead."
Inuyasha was still over by the tree seething about what happened earlier. His ears laid flat against his head as he glanced up towards Kagome, his arms crossed. He couldn't help wonder who those demons were and how Kagome would choose them over him. Scoffing, Inuyasha jumped up into a tree and glared at Youko from the top; dumb kitsune.
Turning towards the hut with Shippou, Kagome was facing Kuronue, Sango, and Youko when Shippou jumped from her arms onto Youkos' shoulder. "Youko Kurama! No way! Mama how do you know Youko?"
Kagome smiled sweetly at Shippou as she made her way over to the two, Youko's ears were pressed against his skull in response to Shippou screaming but he smiled a small smile at the kit. It's been awhile since he's been around such a young kitsune.
"Youko just happened to be around when Sango and I were attacked, he saved us."
Kagome said as she looked at Youko with a smile. "Youko is the fiercest kitsune in all the land! Thank you so much for saving my mom! I know you probably don't like humans but Kagome is different! She's the kindest priestess I've ever met and even took me in as her own!"
Shippou was speaking a mile a minute but immediately quieted down when Kuronue let out an uncharacteristic their right stood a tomato red Sango staring at her feet as Kuronue growled at a now unconscious Miroku on the ground. The only sound besides Kuronue's growl was Youko's chuckle as he realized what just happened. The fox's quiet laughter snapped Kuronue out of his rage and the bat scratched the back of his head as he looked at Sango.
His dark violet eyes clashed with her brown as he gave her his best smile and whispered in her ear, "I'm sorry I hardly even know you but the thought of him touching you was almost too much to bare."
Sango's cheeks seemed like they were permanently crimson as she looked at Kuronue innocently; he could barely contain himself from kissing her right then and there.
She was strong, beautiful, and her scent addicting. How could Youko do this to him? Get him into this situation with a human? He all but groaned from aggravation, the sound knocking Sango out of his unintended spell.
"Demons are such a headache" she complained as she walked away, Kuronue in tow.
Kagome watched as he followed Sango through the village, probably trying to woo her. Her eyebrows rose at the bat's behavior, boy was he up for a challenge. Looking up at Shippou, Kagome plucked him off of Youko's shoulder and laid a small kiss on his forehead.
"I'm going to take a walk with Youko, I'll be right back, okay?" Shippou nodded, as he looked up at Youko one last time and winked. He quickly darted off into the hut before Youko or Kagome could say anything.
Turning away from the fox demon, Kagome began making her way towards the forest. That is, until Inuyasha abruptly stopped her.
"Where in the hell do you think you're going, Kagome?"
He was challenging her, earning a growl from Youko that Inuyasha ignored.
"I'm going to speak to Youko, now watch over my kit and don't you dare raise your voice at me" Kagome was firm on her demand but Inuyasha didn't care, he'd be damned if he let her walk away from him with another demon.
"No way wench! You're stayin- "
"SIT."
With Inuyasha's face in the ground and Youko's smirk, Kagome could feel her headache coming.
A/N: There wasn't much to this chapter, but I'm trying my best to be a good fictional writer.
