Chapter 6

The scene that unfolded before Kagome terrified her. All the village huts were ablaze as hordes of demons flew down relentlessly. The residents scurried about, running for cover as Shippou led them into the foliage. Miroku was barely standing, his staff brought up as a barrier against the onslaught of demons. His eyes were closed as the sweat trickled down his face, the barrier wavering as he drifted in and out of consciousness.

Where are they all coming from? Is this how we will meet our end?

Sango was covered in dirt as she flew through the air with Kirara. Her weapon shredding hordes at a time. The sky was painted red as Kirara slowed within the hordes and Sango began to tire; her body flexing under the stress of throwing Hiraikotsu. All it took was one miscalculated movement and Kirara was thrown into a tree, leaving Sango unresponsive as the demons came towards Kagome.

Kagome felt her hands tingle as she drew up her power, the exhaustion leaving her knees weak. Inuyasha was to the side of her, sporting a gash down his arm and a head injury. His breathing was quick but he wasn't giving up, trenches from his windscar surrounded the duo as he rose to strike again; and that's when he saw her.

Kikyo.

She was surrounded by the demons as she scowled at Inuyasha. Her hair was rapidly flapping, as the demons were making their way towards him. All it took was for Inuyasha to hesitate once for all the demons to clamp onto him, and drag him backwards by his arms. Kagome moved quickly, her hands glowing as they transferred her spiritual powers to the edge of her swords. Although she was exhausted, she was the only one able to fight. If she didn't end this, they wouldn't make it.

She sliced at the demons, eliminating them to dust while freeing a bleeding Inuyasha. He looked at her, eyes wide as he realized the severity of the issue. Miroku and Sango were at their end and it was just them two, against the love of his life. Kagome stood up besides Inuyasha, taking the moment to focus on their surroundings.

The sky was dark for it's red tint, the only light was coming from the burning huts. Kikyo remained heavily protected although the majority of the demons have been eliminated. Just as Kagome went to step, Inuyasha stood to stop her.

His face was covered in ash, his blood was running down to his fingers. Kagome felt her heart break, he looked like he was being torn in two and she already knew what he was going to say.

It came out as a whisper, she could barely hear him over the roar of demons. From the corner of her eye, she could see Sango standing against the tree, trying to climb onto Kirara.

"Kagome, it has to be me."

Kagome went to protest but he was off. His hair was behind him as he took off like lightening. He was screaming at Kikyo to stop or he would have to attack her. His warning was met with maniacal laughter,

"You? Kill me? Oh, Inuyasha. It wouldn't be the first time I would think to die at your hands!"

Her declaration stunned him and if Kagome wouldn't have reacted, he would have been dead. It was quick, quicker than most could see. It was a tentacle heading for Inuyasha. Kagome took off and jumped, taking the brute of the attack while purifying it. Her side was exposed as blood seeped from her fingers.

She grimaced as she fell to one knee. Inuyasha was yelling her name but she couldn't hear him, her breath caught and she lost focus. He stopped and went to reach for her but Kikyo was relentless as she pointed the demons towards him. As Kagome remained stationary, the group became revitalized, desperate to save her. Sango and Miroku fought side by side, swiping the demons and dodging attacks.

Kagome bit her lip, drawing blood as she went to stand, looking straight into the eyes of an enemy she hoped to never encounter again. Before her stood the demon that ruined all their lives. His smile was sinister as his black hair moved within the wind. Kagome felt like throwing up. How could he be alive? She saw him turn to ash.

"Surprised to see me, miko?" His laugh was loud, attracting everyone's attention. "Thanks to the priestess Kikyo, I was able to revive myself and take back what is mine. Our goal was one, to see the end of you."

Tentacle after tentacle flew out and the adrenaline kicked in. Her wound was heavy but she will never allow this monster to walk on this Earth. She didn't turn to Inuyasha as she dashed for Naraku, her request clear.

"You take care of Kikyo."

Naraku was quick but Kagome was quicker. She had trained for this, she knew how he fought and she was better. One tentacle flew to her left, as she ran towards him, her hand reaching out and purifying it to his core. His face was scrunched up in momentary panic but he continued to attack. Four tentacles flew at her, she cleared three but was tossed into the tree by the forth, the sheer force snapped the tree and knocked the air out of her. The blood continued to trickle out of her wound, covering her hip.

Sango was barely standing a few yards from her. Her head was bleeding and her breaths were harsh. The sword in her hand touched the floor as she felt the exhaustion consume her body. She was on the ground and Kagome was stumbling out from the cracked tree. It felt like things were getting worse as Miroku quickly ran to protect the fallen Sango. The demons continued to prevent Inuyasha from reaching Kikyo as Naraku healed and made his way towards Kagome.

She noticed her bow and arrows were a dash away and knew that if she could clear those demons, from Inuyasha, he would be free to help her.

It all happened so fast, the order is unknown to her. She ran towards the bow and reached it in time to dodge Naraku's tentacle. She set the arrow and let it fly, the sky glowed with pink as Inuyasha was free and embraced Kikyo. Sango's voice fell on deaf ears as another tentacle collided with Kagome.

Appearing from the tree lining, Youko noticed the village was almost completely burnt to the ground. Smoke filled the sky and blood soaked the ground. There were demon shreds littering the village and he heard Kuronue whistle next to him.

"Damn Youko, it looks like a war broke out here…"

Youko ignored his friend as he walked deeper into the village. The stench of blood hung heavy in the air and he felt on edge. The duo arrived to the center of the village to come across Kagome's group. They were bandaged and bruised, the kit was the only one who seemed to be in good condition but was relentlessly crying.

The half demon had his ears back as the female Kuronue fancied, yelled at him. Her finger pointed at him as the monk watched the fire between the group. Youko's presence was not known until Kuronue appeared beside Sango and checked her wounds.

"Sango, what happened?" Kurnonue was holding her wrist and looking over her badges earning a squeak from her and a side glance from Miroku.

"We were ambushed and out-numbered…"

Her answer was slightly above a whisper and Miroku watched their interaction as Inuyasha glared at Youko, neither of them speaking. Inuyasha appeared angry while Youko remained unfazed. As the blush spread across Sango's cheeks and Shippou's sobs quieted, it was Youko who silenced them all.

"Where is my mate?"
