A/N - Just a little something :) It was fun to write Amy and Bernadette! Enjoy :)
"Man, I am so looking forward to eating," Penny said as the waitress left their table, having delivered their brunches and mimosas. She, Amy and Bernadette picked up their glasses. "I threw up like, five times this morning."
"Hm, maybe you're pregnant," Amy joked as the girls clinked their glasses before taking a sip.
Penny laughed, but just before she was about to swallow her sip of mimosa, she stopped herself and subtly let the liquid flow back from her mouth and into the glass, unnoticed by her friends. She knew Amy had said it as a joke and she had thought of it as a joke too, but her mind, in that limbo between drinking her drink, had told her to stop. As she put her glass down she smiled as though to say she had actually taken a sip and enjoyed it.
"I wonder how far the guys have gotten." Bernadette mused, picking up her sandwich.
Shit. When's the last time I actually took my pill? "Well, Leonard's driving, so probably not very far."
"Really? Sheldon said Leonard speeds. Not as much as you, but once he was driving at 71 on a 70." Amy raised her brows accusingly.
"Oh come on, Leonard drives slower than my grandma, and she's dead!" Bernadette rolled her eyes before biting aggressively into her sandwich.
I don't think I've even seen a condom since we had sex after my date with Zack. And that was like, an ice age ago. Boy Leonard would be so unimpressed with that time comparison. I don't even know how long an ice age lasts. Ha, apart from an age. Or if it even refers to a time period, like lightyears. What the hell is that all about anyway? "Hey, Leonard does not drive that slow. Just... a little slower than the speed limit of any given road, unless he's angry or... heightened. Emotionally." Sexually. Man, that was an awesome drive.
"Angry is right." Amy agreed, pausing to finish chewing her food. "Remember that time when you guys nearly slept together at our conference? When he was driving us back, he was seriously speeding. Like, he got stopped by the cops."
"Seriously? Wow. Did he get a ticket?"
"Of course he did, bestie, he doesn't have a rack like yours to charm his way out of one. Said rack is looking excellent today, by the way." Amy winked.
"Oh, thanks." Penny grinned. What if that's because I'm pregnant? "So then Sheldon lied. Leonard doesn't have a perfect driving record." Still 'hubba-hubba' though.
"When did Sheldon tell you that?" Amy raised a brow curiously.
"When you guys were blabbing to each other thinking I was going to break up with him. Long story." Penny waved a hand in dismissal as Bernadette went to ask what she was talking about. I don't think I've even had a period since like, two months ago.
Bernadette's phone went off, and she picked it off to read the message. "Speak of the devil - Howie says Sheldon is complaining because Leonard's driving speed is unstable, going between 69 and 71 but rarely at 70."
Ha, 69. Definitely didn't get pregnant that way. "You would think after all these years, Sheldon would learn to shut up about people's driving."
"Oh, and Raj has put on a Rihanna CD." Bernadette read the second message from Howard aloud as it came up on her screen. "Sheldon says this is what hell feels like."
"Hey, what's wrong with Rihanna!" Penny exclaimed. Oh God.
Amy shrugged. "Ask Sheldon. I have no objections to her. This food feel like it's going to stay down, Penny?"
Not anymore it doesn't. "Yeah, it's fine. I think I used out of date milk again this morning."
"You really need to go grocery shopping more often. I could use so many things in your fridge for my experiments." Bernadette said. "Not useful ones, but fun ones."
"You scientists are weird." Penny frowned. I really need to get a pregnancy test.
"I didn't comment on the contents of your fridge." Amy reminded her. "Though you really do need to go grocery shopping. Last week you served us food that we brought with us."
Penny felt her stomach lurch slightly. Either this is some kind of bug or I really need a pregnancy test. Like right now. And probably a doctors appointment. "Alright, alright, I'll go today. Then at least Leonard'll stop moaning that there's no edible food when they get home tonight."
"I was going to go grocery shopping this afternoon! Hey, we could go together!" Amy grinned excitedly.
Great. "Oh, sure, cool."
"I have to pick up some papers from work first but we could go afterwards?"
Thank God. "Sure!"
The rest of brunch felt like it took an eternity for Penny. When they finally paid the bill, she tried not to rush her goodbyes before speeding off in the direction of the apartment block, before making a U-turn and heading back into town to get to the pharmacy. For the first time, she didn't feel nervous about being judged for picking out the test and paying for it at the till, only anticipation for what it would tell her after Amy's joke had given her a revelation of sorts.
On the drive back, she kept staring at the plastic bag on the passenger seat. She ran up the stairs to her and Leonard's apartment faster than she ever had in the time she'd lived at 2311 N. Los Robles. Hurrying into her apartment, she poured herself three large glasses of water in quick succession and downed them before grabbing the packet of sticks and getting started in the bathroom. Minutes later, she was done.
"Man, I have never peed that fast in my life." Penny said to herself, pacing her room while she waited. "Except that time I went out and had to wait ages in line for the bathroom and texted Leonard on the toilet saying it was like Niagara Falls. God. Ugh, how much longer do I have to wait?" Snatching her phone up, she checked the time: two minutes to go. There was also a text from Leonard. "This place is awesome! We'll be leaving in the evening instead of the afternoon, so I'll be home around ten. Love you!" Penny read the text aloud and sighed. "Great, that's even longer that I have to wait if it's positive. Ugh, and I still have to go shopping with Amy! How the hell am I meant to act all natural if I find out I'm pregnant? She's gonna want to know why I'm not buying wine... oh God, oh God, oh God!"
Flopping down on her bed, she squeezed her eyes shut and took a few deep breaths to relieve the sense of panic. "Come on. Don't pretend you've never thought about having a baby. You're just panicking because you didn't expect this." Penny mumbled to herself. It was true: anytime she passed a baby store, she found herself thinking about it as an option. She and Leonard were engaged, her thoughts were often wandering to their future together. And this didn't falsify what she'd told her mother: they weren't getting married because she was pregnant. If she was, it was just how things had worked out.
"It's not as if I am pregnant. I might not be." Penny said as she sat up, her heart sinking ever so slightly at that thought.
"Hey!" Penny jumped up from the couch as the door opened and Leonard walked in, suitcase in hand.
"Hey, honey," Leonard greeted her with a quick kiss, setting his suitcase down.
"How was it?"
"Amazing."
"Total nerd-fest?" Penny asked, amused.
"Yup. The best kind. I got you something, by the way. It's kind of silly and definitely nerdy, but I think you'll like it."
Penny held up a finger, stepping back and heading to the couch. "Okay, but before you do, I have to tell you something."
"Umm... okay."
"Come sit here." Penny patted the couch beside her, inviting him to join her. Once he had sat down, she took a breath, intertwining their fingers together. "I'm pregnant."
"You're what." Leonard said flatly, blinking rapidly.
"Pregnant. I am with child. You have impregnated me." Penny clarified, smirking at her choice of phrase. Okay, telling Leonard was a lot easier than she had thought it would be. It was actually funny.
"I..."
"You..."
"I... uh, I did not expect this."
"Well, me neither, really. As soon as I realized the possibility when Amy made a joke, I had to sacrifice my mimosa at brunch. Like, halfway through I had to knock it over with my hand 'by accident' to have a reason not to be drinking it."
"You're really pregnant?" Leonard asked, his face finally filling with color again.
"I am." Penny nodded, bringing his hands with hers to her stomach. "We're having a baby."
"Wow. Oh my God, this is amazing!" Leonard burst into a grin, pulling Penny into a hug.
"It kinda is." Penny agreed, smiling, before kissing him full on the mouth. Pulling back, she tapped his nose. "There's also Chinese takeaway over there on the counter that arrived ten minutes ago for dinner. I ordered when you said you were an hour away. So, your go. Where's my present?"
