6x06 What The World Needs Now

"Are you going to tell me why you and Blaine were missing from the invitational or what?" asked Noelle a few days later as they went over sheet music for potential sectionals numbers. Rachel was putting the kids to bed.

"We got trapped in a fake elevator," said Kurt.

"Say what now?" Noelle replied, raising an eyebrow.

"It's a REALLY long story and I really don't want to talk about it. Can we just focus on finding something decent for sectionals please?" asked Kurt.

"We still need to find six more members," said Noelle. "I'm not sure how we'll be able to pull that off."

"We've got five weeks to do this, but I think we should be okay," said Kurt.

"Ooh, I have a great idea for this week's lesson!" said Noelle, holding up a music book.

"Is that-" started Kurt.

"Burt Bacharach's Greatest Hits!" smiled Noelle. "And one of Mom and Dad's favorite singer/songwriters!"

"Brilliant! You are a genius, Noelle! Go from Breakups to Love Songs," said Kurt. "And Burt is a champion of all sorts of awards so why not encourage our champions with a champion?"

"Well, we kinda did love songs at the invitational but this will be even better," said Noelle. "Especially since I already sang one song by The Carpenters when I auditioned for New Directions with Finn. Now this gives me a chance to sing another one of their greatest hits. Close To You."

"Oh for the love of God," muttered Kurt.

"And Kurt, will you do me a favor and sing with me?" Noelle asked. "Please?" She made a pouty face and clasped her hands together in front of her in a begging motion. "For Finn?"

Kurt sighed.

"Oh alright," sighed Kurt. "For Finn. I can't believe I'm resorting myself to this."

"Alright, listen up everyone," said Kurt as he, Rachel, and Noelle entered the choir room.

"First off, welcome back to our distinguished alumni that have come back," said Rachel, pointing to Artie, Mercedes, Santana and Brittney, who sat with Kitty and the newbies. "Thank you so much for coming back to help mentor."

The group clapped.

"And this week's lesson comes from Noelle," said Kurt. "She's in charge this week. Without her bright mind last week at the invitational we probably wouldn't have won. Sis, the floor is yours."

"Thank you Big Brother," said Noelle as she took front and center as Kurt and Rachel sat down.

"Okay, so Kurt and I were going through sheet music when I stumbled across one of my old music books," said Noelle. "And then it hit me. We're champions. We're the best. And what better way to prepare for sectionals than spend a week singing the greatest hits of one of the greatest singer songwriters in the world. Someone who was once like you, worked their ass off to get where they are today, and is now a champion."

"Katniss Everdeen!" shouted Brittney. Noelle smirked as did Rachel while everyone looked at her puzzled.

"Close," laughed Noelle as she pointed at Brittney. "Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, Burt Bacharach Week!" Noelle pushed away the front dry erase board to reveal the lesson.

"This is a good time to go to the bathroom or get a snack," Kitty whispered to Spencer, who silently chuckled.

"Burt Bacharach has written seventy-three, count 'em, seventy-three, Top 40 hits," said Noelle. "He's also won three Oscars, two Golden Globes, a boatload of Grammys, and his music has been featured on everything from The Simpsons to Goodfellas. And you can't help but grin when you listen to his music. His songs are uplifting and theatrical and optimistic. We need to soak up all his uplifting energy as we get ready for Sectionals. Which are five weeks away, but I guarantee you, Vocal Adrenaline and the Warblers are doing everything in their power to regain their former glory."

There was a pause as Noelle walked over to her bag.

"And, as a little encouragement from me, I have a couple pictures in here that I want to add to our memory wall back there," said Noelle. "To remind you guys that we are champions in our minds, heart, body and soul."

"The first one is a picture of my brother and I right after I was diagnosed with MS," said Noelle. "Alumni, I never told any of you, but Mark Ballas and I had already met before our first Nationals."

"What?" sputtered Santana. "You mean you already knew him? And met him? I was wondering why he hugged you for a long time when we stopped at the studio and again at Nationals and looked happy to see you."

Noelle turned the 8x10 photo of Finn, Noelle, and Mark that Kitty had unearthed the week before around and the group gasped at the picture.

"This was January 2008 at the Columbus show of the Dancing With the Stars Tour," said Noelle. "Mom got us the tickets and drove us down and we met Mark before the show when he was signing autographs on the concourse. I was an original member of the Team Sabrina Fanclub before I lost the feeling in my legs. I told him about my MS diagnosis and he had us wait around until he was done and then after that, he took us down to meet the cast, including Sabrina. He even got our seats upgraded."

"Oh my god, that's awesome!" said Madison. "You two must still be really close, huh?"

"I owe Mark and Sabrina everything," said Noelle, nodding. "When Rachel and I were on Broadway, Mark came to one of my shows. He introduced me to a friend of his who happened to be a record producer. Mark had given him my demo and showed him all of our New Directions videos on Youtube. If it wasn't for Mark, I wouldn't have gotten signed and become famous. He has been a loyal friend to me for the last seven years."

Noelle set the picture of them down on the piano and picked up another 8x10 photo.

"This other picture, you can't see it just yet," said Noelle.

"Why not?" asked Jane.

"Well that would ruin the lesson," teased Noelle. "So for now, this picture goes back in my bag. At the end of the week, when we're done singing, I'll show you who it's of." Noelle placed the picture back in the bag and put the Mark picture up on the shelf.

"And to kick off the week, Kurt has agreed to sing a song with me," said Noelle as she sat at the piano and motioned to Kurt who stood up and joined her. "Finn and I used to sing a lot of songs by the brother/sister duo Peter and Karen Carpenter. One of their top hits was written by Burt Bacharach himself. Kurt has agreed to carry Finn and mine's tradition of singing The Carpenters."

Noelle started to play the piano as the band backed them up.

Noelle:

Why do birds suddenly appear

Every time you are near?

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

Kurt: Why do stars fall down from the sky

Every time you walk by?

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

Noelle and Kurt: On the day that you were born

And the angels got together

And decided to create a dream come true

So they sprinkled moon dust

In your hair of gold

And starlight in your eyes of blue

Noelle: That is why all the boys in town

Follow you all around

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

The trumpet player played a solo as

Kurt and Noelle: On the day that you were born

And the angels got together

And decided to create a dream come true

So they sprinkled moon dust

In your hair of gold

And starlight in your eyes of blue

Noelle: That is why all the boys in town

Follow you all around

Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

Kurt and Noelle: Just like me

They long to be

Close to you

"Hey Momma, how are you doing?' asked Mercedes as she joined Rachel in the office later that day.

"Oh hi Mercedes, just waiting for Carole to get here with the kids," said Rachel. "She got called in to work so looks like the newbies will get to meet the Finchel spawn earlier than I planned."

"You didn't answer my question," said Mercedes as she sat in the chair in front of the desk.

"I miss him, everyday," said Rachel as she looked at the photos of her, Finn, and their kids on her desk. Her finger traced down the framed photo from their wedding.

"Ever think about starting to date again?" asked Mercedes.

"No, it's too soon," said Rachel. "Plus, I wanted to wait until the kids were a bit older. Imagine me dating and the guys I date seeing four toddlers in my house." Mercedes laughed.

"Yeah, I bet that would be a bit terrifying," said Mercedes. "Hey, have you ever considered going back to Broadway?"

"No, I think I'm done," said Rachel. "Sure, I haven't won a Tony Award, but you know what, I would rather have my kids than some silly award."

"Okay, who are you and what have you done with Rachel Berry-Hudson?" teased Mercedes.

"I'm serious Cedes," said Rachel as they headed into the choir room. Rachel stopped in front of the memory wall. "Finn and I made an agreement a long time ago that when we had our family, that family was first over our careers. Since I'm well off from Wicked, money isn't a priority at the moment. Plus, I've got Burt, Carole, Noelle, Josh, Kurt, Blaine, and you guys when I need babysitters," Rachel said.

"What about your dads, have you made any contact with them?" Mercedes asked. Rachel shook her head.

"No, I haven't spoken to them since I walked out at the end of junior year," said Rachel. "I drove past the house the other day but neither of them were home. If they even still live there."

"I think you should call them," said Mercedes.

"I wouldn't know what to say," said Rachel. "I'm scared they will laugh at me and tell me I shouldn't have married Finn because now he died and left me alone with four babies to raise. I'm afraid they will tell me I wasted my dream of Broadway when my real dream was to be a mommy and grow old with Finn." Rachel was starting to break down and cry and Mercedes consoled her. Just then, Carole walked in with the kids.

"Hi, we're here," said Carole. "Oh, Rachel, what's wrong?"

"It's my fault," said Mercedes.

"Auntie Cedes!" Reagan said excitedly, running up and hugging her aunt.

"Hi Rea-Rea," said Mercedes as William followed suit. Christopher and Christina were in the stroller parked in front of Carole. "Hi Billy boy, I've missed you guys. I think Mommy needs to be alone for awhile. Why don't we go find Uncle Sam and Uncle Kurt? I think they are in the auditorium with Auntie Noe."

"Mommy, you's sad?" asked William with a pout as he saw the tears on Rachel's face as Carole consoled her.

"I'm okay Buddy, I am," said Rachel as she knelt down and hugged William. "You two be good for Aunt Cedes and Uncle Sam and help with Christopher and Christina, okay? Mommy needs to talk to Grandma for a minute." She kissed the tops of her kids' heads and Mercedes led the Finchel spawn out of the choir room, leaving Rachel and Carole alone.

"What happened?" asked Carole.

"Oh, Mercedes and I started talking about how I've been feeling," started Rachel. "She was asking me if I was going to start dating again, and if I thought about going back to Broadway, but this is my home, Mom. Finn and I agreed that our family was first over our careers. That's why I came home, so the kids could grow up where we did, and be with you and Burt and Kurt and their aunts and uncles when they come home to visit. And then Mercedes asked me if I had talked to either of my dads yet and I guess I'm still afraid that they will tell me I was wrong and they were right."

"Oh sweetie," said Carole, consoling Rachel in a hug. "You know, Burt and I want you to start dating again. But when you're ready. Don't ever feel like you'd be forgetting Finn or dishonoring his memory. As for your Dads, I think you should at least try to talk to them. How will you ever know they still hate you unless you find out? Look, I have to go, but if you want to talk about this later at home we can, okay?"

"Okay," said Rachel, hugging her. "Thanks Mom."

"You're welcome Sweetheart, I love you," said Carole.

"I love you too," said Rachel. As Carole headed out, Rachel sighed as she stared at the pictures on the Memory Wall and started to sing.

Rachel:

Promises, promises

I'm all through with promises, promises now

I don't know how I got the nerve to walk out

If I shout, remember I feel free

Now I can look at myself and be proud

I'm laughing out loud

Oh, promises, promises

This is where those promises, promises end

I don't pretend that what was wrong can be right

Every night I'll sleep now, no more lies

Things that I promised myself fell apart

But I found my heart

Oh, promises, their kind of promises, can just destroy a life

Oh, promises, those kind of promises, take all the joy from life

Oh, promises, promises, my kind of promises

Can lead to joy and hope and love

Yes, love

Every night I sleep now, no more lies

Things that I promised myself fell apart

But I found my heart

Oh, promises, their kind of promises can just destroy a life

Oh, promises, those kind of promises take all the joy from life

Oh, promises, promises, my kind of promises

Can lead to joy and hope and love

Yes, love

Noelle sighed as she walked up the steps of a small home. She had been helping Santana and Britt plan their pending nuptials when she realized someone wasn't going to be coming to the wedding if she didn't know about it. But Santana's abuela was old-fashioned and traditional and she knew this wasn't going to end well. Noelle rang the doorbell and moments Alma Lopez answered the door.

"Noelle Hudson! What a surprise!" said Alma.

"Hola Senorita Lopez, can I come in?" asked Noelle.

"Si, please, come in," said Alma, stepping aside. "What do I owe this pleasure? I enjoyed your album so much."

"Gracias, Gracias," said Noelle as they sat down in the living room. "Actually I came to talk to you about something important. It's about Santana."

Suddenly, the pleasant woman's attitude turned from friendly to stern.

"Oh, her," stated Alma.

"Now before you kick me out because you are upset she's out of the closet, just hear me out. Senorita Lopez, Santana's getting married to Brittney," said Noelle. "She misses you and wants you to come to the wedding. She told me you two used to play dress up when she was little and threw fake weddings. Now I don't know about you, but my brother Kurt used to do the same thing and to be honest, it used to freak my dad out when he would throw on his mom's wedding dress and wear her heels. My dad, he's a great guy. But it took him sometime to get used to the fact that Kurt's gay. Dad always wanted him to play sports and be a masculine man, but Kurt was never that. Yes, my dad was hurt that his little boy did not turn out how he dreamed he would be, but he was supportive in all of our decisions. When Finn died, my parents started living their lives to the fullest, as did I. Then Kurt and Blaine got engaged shortly after Josh and I got married and moved to Nashville, but they broke up because they were scared of life and people not being openly supportive. They're back to being friends, but I'm pretty sure they're going to get back together soon. I see a lot of hatred and bigotry in this country. Our forefathers would be shocked and appalled if they were still here today. Our country was founded on the values that all men are created equal, no matter what race, gender, sexual orientation or disability you have. Santana asked me to stop by and invite you to the auditorium at McKinley tomorrow. She really wants to talk to you, Senorita Lopez. She's just so scared that you don't love her anymore. And I hope you still do. My motto is Family First. Family is always your top priority, no matter how annoying your siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins or other relatives are, or because your child made a mistake that turned into something wonderful. My grandparents stopped talking to my mother after she had me and twelve years later they deeply regretted it. They spent the next six years trying to find us after we moved when I was diagnosed with MS."

Noelle stood up and started for the door.

"I hope you can come tomorrow," said Noelle. "You should see how much Santana has made a difference with the new Glee Club. She's a great mentor to these kids. Buenos Noches Senorita Lopez. Adios."

Noelle walked out the door and a dumbfounded Alma Lopez just sat there, taking in Noelle's words.

Meanwhile, over at Brittney's house, Artie was helping Brittney with the theme for the wedding. Next thing Artie knew, Brittney's fantasy turned into a dream sequence and he watched Brittney sing and dance around the bedroom. As she stopped singing, her phone rang.

"Hello?" asked Brittney.

"Hey Britt, it's Noelle," said Noelle. "I just left Santana's abuela and left her on the sofa to think about what I had told her. Hopefully she comes tomorrow. Can you let Santana know?"

"Sure, bye," said Brittney.

"What was that about?" asked Artie.

"Something about a sofa," Brittney replied confused.

On the other side of town, Rachel had pulled into her dads' driveway. Hiram Berry's SUV sat in the driveway. Rachel took a deep breath.

"You can do this Rachel, it's your dads, what can go wrong?" Rachel asked herself. She took another deep breath and got out of the car. She walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell. A moment later, the door opened and Hiram Berry stood at the door.

"Rachela," said Hiram.

"Hi Daddy," said Rachel. "Is Dad home? Can I talk to you two?"

"Come on in, but Sweetheart, your Dad isn't here," said Hiram. "He hasn't been for a few years."

"What? What are you talking about?" asked Rachel shockingly.

"Sweetheart, your father and I got divorced shortly after you moved in with the Hummels," said Hiram as they sat in the living room. "I was ready to tell you that I was supportive of your engagement but your father took full control and I couldn't get a word out. As soon as you left, we had a fight and he walked out. Next thing I knew, he had filed for divorce but I won everything because of the situation."

"Oh Daddy," whispered Rachel. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that I didn't come back sooner." Hiram wrapped his arms around her as they hugged.

"And I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when you lost the love of your life," said Hiram. "He was a good kid, Rachela. I know how much you love him."

"And I have four beautiful kids because of him," said Rachel. "I wouldn't trade them for anything else in the world, not even a Tony Award, Daddy. Will you come meet them tomorrow at the school? I reinstated the glee club with Kurt and Noelle's help and we've been singing Burt Bacharach this week."

"I love him!' said Hiram. "Yes, I want to meet them, Sweetheart. What time should I come by?"

"We're doing a big triple number in the auditorium tomorrow afternoon to try and convince Santana's grandma to come to her and Brittney's wedding around 4:00," said Rachel.

"I'll be there," said Hiram.

Alma Lopez walked into the McKinley auditiorium and shielded her eyes when a bright spotlight shone on her. A voice spoke out from nowhere.

"Senorita Lopez, welcome, please have a seat in the front row for a spectacular performance."

Alma sat down in a chair that was clearly marked "Reserved for Alma Lopez" and watched as music started to play and the curtain opened to reveal Santana in a red dress, the current and former members of the New Directions behind her.

Santana:

What's it all about, Alfie?

Is it just for the moment we live?

What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?

Are we meant to take more than we give?

Or are we meant to be kind?

And if only fools are kind, Alfie

Then I guess it is wise to be cruel

And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie

What will you lend on an old golden rule?

Santana with Alumni and New Directions vocalizing:

As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie

I know there's something much more

Something even non-believers can believe in

Santana (Alumni and New Directions):

I believe in love, Aflie (Alfie)

Without true love we just exist, Alfie

Santana with Alumni and New Directions vocalizing:

Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing

Santana with New Directions and Alumni:

Alfie

Santana (Alumni and New Directions):

When you walk let your heart lead the way

And you'll find love any day, Alfie (Alfie)

Alfie

As the song ended, Alma was about to clap, tears falling down her face when another song started to play. This time, the guys including Blaine (who had agreed to help out Santana and Brittney) came out in tailcoats and top hats as Santana walked down the stage steps and sat with her abuela.

"I'm glad you came," whispered Santana. "Just listen and watch."

Alma merely patted her hand in response as they sat and held hands. Meanwhile, Hiram Berry was standing in the back of the auditorium as his eye caught Burt and Carole Hummel sitting with the Finchel spawn. His heart melted at the sight of his four grandchildren cuddled with Burt and Carole as the boys sang.

Blaine:

Once in your life you find her

Someone that turns your heart around

And next thing you know you're closing down the town

Artie:

Wake up and it's still with you

Even though you left her way across town

Wondering to yourself "Hey, what've I found?"

Roderick with Alumni and New Directions Boys (Roderick):

If you get caught between the Moon and New York City

(The best that you can do

The best that you can do is fall in love)

Mason:

He's laughing about the way they want him to be

Alma and Santana clapped and Santana squeeze her abuela's hand as the last song started to play and Noelle came out on stage, and the New Directions old and new came together, even Mr. Schue had come as Santana joined them on the stage.

Noelle:

What the world needs now is love, sweet love

It's the only thing that there's just too little of

Rachel with Alumni, New Directions, and Will:

What the world needs now is love, sweet love

Rachel:

As the final song ended, there was a large round of applause from Alma, Hiram, Burt and Carole. Alma finally realized that were other people in the auditorium.

"Well?" Noelle asked as Santana and Brittney walked down the stage steps hand in hand.

"That was wonderful," said Alma. "Noelle, what you said last night, made me really think. Santana, I was wrong. I'm not saying I agree with every decision you make. I still don't believe it's right for two women to get married, but I do believe that family is the most important thing in the world. And I love you, Santana."

"I don't want to be the person in your life that causes you pain," said Santana.

"And I don't want to miss the day that I've been dreaming of my whole life. Or the birth of your kids. Or any other important days," said Alma.

"I don't agree with everything that you believe, either," said Santana. "I just want my abuela back."

"I've missed you, Santana," said Alma.

"I've missed you, too," said Santana as they hugged. Everyone clapped and cheered as Burt, Carole, and Hiram made their way towards the stage with the Finchel spawn.

"Daddy! You came!" said Rachel, hugging Hiram.

"Hi Princess, yes, I came," said Hiram. "That was wonderful everyone! I wish I had been up there singing."

"Yeah, no," said Rachel, shaking her head and everyone laughed.

"Momma, why you call him Daddy?" Reagan asked Rachel as she clung to her Mother's leg and pointed curiously at Hiram.

"Because Reagan, that's my daddy. That's your Grandpa Berry. He's felt bad he hasn't met you yet. So I invited him to come meet you, and Billy, and Christopher and Christina."

"Hi Reagan," said Hiram as he knelt down to her and William's level. "You know, when your mommy told us she was going to marry your daddy, your other grandpa Berry wasn't very nice to her about it. I didn't get to tell your mommy that I was very happy for her and your daddy. Then your Papa Leroy and I decided to break up and we were going through a lot so I couldn't come visit you. But I'm here now and I promise I will be in your life if you will let me?"

"Okay!" said Reagan and Billy, hugging him. Rachel smiled and a few tears fell from her eyes at the sight of Reagan and William accepting their grandfather's apology.

"I'm so glad you guys could work it out," Noelle said to Santana, Alma, Rachel, and Hiram. "And now, I do believe it's time for us to get ready for an engagement party, no?"

"She's right!" said Mr. Schue. "Everyone is welcome to come over to mine and Emma's apartment later tonight. Noelle has the address."

"7:00 sharp!" said Noelle as she handed out the flyers she had made. "And we will have a special Skype session with Puck, Quinn, Beth and Alex so PLEASE be on time!"

The following day, the group was gathered in the choir room to wrap up Burt Bacharach Week.

"Noelle, are you going to show us that other picture?" asked Jane.

"Yep, I kept my promise," said Noelle. "I'm so proud of all of you guys for your hard work. You really showed me you can appreciate life, love, happiness, sadness, and everything in between." Noelle reached into her bag. "If Burt Bacharach was here, I'm pretty sure he would be congratulating you all the same as I am now."

Just then, before Noelle could show the picture, an announcement came over the P.A.

"Attention all McKinley Students, Teachers, and Faculty, and yes this includes you, Porcelain, Berry-Hudson, Gimpy, and all you other Glee Alumni that have no business being here, there is an impromptu and mandatory student body meeting in the gym at this time. You have five minutes to haul your asses to the gym before I release the hounds starting now."

The occupants of the choir room screamed in horror as they all heard the entire school running through the halls. Some teachers were locking their doors and boarding up the windows. Everyone ran out of the choir room in horror and Noelle rolled her eyes.

"Nah, she wouldn't really do that," said Noelle as she set the picture on the memory wall. She stared at the picture of her with Burt Bacharach at the 2014 Grammy Awards After-Party for a few minutes until she heard barking. Noelle's eyes widened in horror as she made a mad dash for the door before she could be attacked by the hounds.

As she ran away, the picture of Noelle with the one and only Burt Bacharach rested on the shelf in it's frame, with the words, "Dreams Do Come True" written in gold letters, followed by a loud banging noise and several items falling over to someone's screams and shouting.
