Deleted Scene 4 S2 Noelle's NYU Audition
Obviously takes place during New York
Noelle sighed as she climbed back into a cab. She'd successfully written a song for Nationals and now she was going to head back to the hotel. As she looked out the window, she saw a billboard.
"Excuse me Sir?" Noelle asked the driver. "Instead of the hotel, could you drop me off at NYU's Music building?"
"Certainly," said the driver.
"Thanks much," said Noelle. Several minutes later, the cabbie dropped Noelle off and she handed him the fare. She entered the building, her guitar and bag in hand and walked down towards the Music Office. Students were hustling and bustling to their summer classes. She entered the door and a man sitting at a desk poked his head out from a side room.
"Can I help you?" he asked.
"Umm, yeah, my name's Noelle Hudson, and I'm a junior at McKinley High in Lima, Ohio, and I'm in town for the Show Choir Nationals. I saw your billboard about Enrollment and was wondering if I could audition for admission for next year?"
"Sure, absolutely," said the man. "Have you filled out the regular admission application yet?"
Noelle shook her head.
"No, not yet, but I thought maybe you could help me with that," said Noelle. "You see, I kind of did this in a spur of the moment. I haven't even told my parents yet. They're sight-seeing around town."
"Well, I would be more than happy to help," said the man as he grabbed several forms. "By the way, my name is Dean Winters, and I am the head of the Music Department."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir," said Noelle.
"Okay, let's start with the regular application," said Dean Winters. "There is a thirty dollar application fee, do you have it on you?"
"Sure do," said Noelle.
"Good, you'll want to send that with the application when you turn it in at the Main Admissions desk in he next building over," said Dean Winters. Five minutes later, Noelle put the pen down after Dean Winters walked her through the application.
"Okay, make sure to turn that into the main admissions department," said Dean Winters. "Now, you want to go ahead and audition then?" Noelle nodded.
"Okay, if you give me just a few minutes, I need to gather a couple of my colleagues so that they may listen as well," said Dean Winters. He led her out of the office and into what looked like the school's choir room.
"Kindly wait here, I shall return in a moment," said Dean Winters. A few moments later, he returned with another gentleman, and a woman with a stern smile on her face.
"Noelle, this is Professors March and Reynolds, they are the instrumental and vocal directors here at NYU," said Dean Winters. Noelle shook their hands.
"How do you do, Noelle?" asked Professor March. "James March, I'm the band, orchestra and ensembles director."
"Fine, thank you Sir," said Noelle.
"I'm Jeannette Reynolds, I am the head of the Vocal Department," said Professor Reynolds as she shook Noelle's hand.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Ma'am," said Noelle.
"Now, how would you like to audition, Noelle?" asked Dean Winters.
"I was wondering if I could sing and play for you at the same time?" Noelle asked, a smile on her face.
"Sure, will you be using your guitar?" asked Dean Winters.
"Actually, may I use the piano?" Noelle asked.
"Absolutely," said Jeanette.
"Great," said Noelle as she sat down at the piano. The three adults sat in chairs and listened as Noelle looked at them.
"So, uh, this is a classic hit, and with everything I've been through with my Multiple Sclerosis, I can't help but think about my friends and our show choir and where my musical career began," said Noelle.
As she started to play the opening bars of "Don't Stop Believing", Dean Winters smiled and nodded. All the while, she imagined the rest of the New Directions around her singing along, Finn playing drums and Puck playing guitar.
Noelle:
Oooh
Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere
Noelle with the Group vocalizing (with the Group):
A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on
(Strangers waiting)
Up and down the boulevard
Their (shadows searching) in the night
(Streetlights, people)
Livin' just to find emotion
(Hiding somewhere) in the night!
Oooh!
Workin' hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice
Just one more time
Some will win
Some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
(Strangers waiting)
Up and down the boulevard
Their (shadows searching) in the night
Ooh (Streetlights, people)
Livin' just to find emotion
(Hiding somewhere) in the night!
Noelle with the Group (Noelle):
(Woah, ooh!)
Don't stop believin'
(Hold on to that feelin')
Streetlights, people, ooh! (The Group: Whoa, oh)
Don't stop believin'
(Hold on!)
Street lights people, ooh! (The Group: Whoa, oh)
Don't stop!
As Noelle ended the song, the three adults enthusiastically clapped.
"That was amazing!" said Jeanette.
"Incredible!" said James.
"Stupendous!" said Dean Winters. "And you said there are more of you?!"
"Yes Sir, the New Directions," said Noelle. "It's me, my brothers Finn and Kurt, and my best friends. We came in Second Place last year at Nationals and we're looking to place again or possibly even win the whole thing."
"When is the competition? I would love to come hear your group sing!" said Dean Winters. The other two adults nodded and murmured in agreement.
"The first round is on Thursday night and then Finals are on Saturday," said Noelle. "It starts at 8 AM. We leave Sunday Night to go back to Ohio."
"Do you know what time you're going on stage Thursday?" Dean Winters asked. Noelle shook her head.
"I think we're going to be in the middle or at the end of the competition though," said Noelle. "Since we're a returning choir that placed in the finals last year we get to pick a spot. I think our director picked the last spot."
"Save the best for last?" Jeanette asked with smile.
"I guess," said Noelle with a smile. "We're important to our director. We're like his kids. And he is an alumni of the group when they won Nationals in 1993."
"Well, we will be there to see you all perform and hopefully we can meet your group and talk to you after the show," said Dean Winters. "As for your audition, give me a few days to know whether the school will accept your application before I let you know."
"Awesome, well, thanks everyone," said Noelle.
"I'll walk you out," said Jeanette, leading her out the door. "I'd like to hear a little more about your choir before you leave."
"Sure, why don't I start from the beginning?" smiled Noelle.
