Deleted Scene 5 S4/S5 The Quarterback
"How is she?"
Noelle turned to see Josh enter the living room of the brownstone. It had been a few hours since the doctor had told the group that Finn had died. Noelle sighed.
"Devastated, she's in their room sitting Shiva," said Noelle. She looked down at the cast on her arm as there was a slight silence between the two. Carole, Burt, and the others were next door at Puck and Quinn's trying to make arrangements to have Finn's body transported back to Lima for his funeral and burial.
"He saved my life," Noelle continued. "If Finn hadn't pushed me out of the way, I would be the one in that morgue right now."
"I know," said Josh, hanging his head lowly for a minute. "Finn's my hero."
"Mine too," said Noelle. Noelle broke down and cried and Josh took her into his arms.
"He was my brother," sobbed Noelle. "He always took care of me and now he's gone and I don't know what I'm going to do without my big brother."
Noelle continued to sob into Josh as he stroked and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.
The melody of the piano filled the auditorium. People watched on in sadness, Carole, Burt, Rachel and the twins sitting front and center, as the New Directions, new and old, came together to remember their fallen friend.
New Directions:
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets
In midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles
In laughter, in strife
In five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure
A year in the life?

Harmony:
In truths that she learned
Kurt:
Or in times that he cried
Puck:
In bridges he burned
Noelle:
Or the way that she died
Kurt, Puck, and Noelle with Alumni and New Directions:
It's time now to sing out
Though the story never ends
Let's celebrate, remember a year in the life of friends
Kurt, Puck, Noelle, and Tina with Alumni and New Directions (Mercedes):
Remember the love (Oh, you've got to, you've got to remember the love)
Remember the love (You know that love is a gift from above)

As the group ended the song, the room was silent as the New Directions turned to the back and looked at a picture of Finn on the projector screen.
"Thank you all for coming, this means a lot to me, to us," said Noelle as she and Kurt stood in the choir room a few weeks later. Rachel and the twins were back in New York with Quinn as Quinn helped her friend sort through things and grieve.
"It's been a month since Finn died, but I felt like we haven't honored him enough," continued Noelle. "He was my hero, he saved my life, and I know I owe him a huge favor. So I thought we would take this week to sing for Finn. He was our Quarterback and our leader. He deserves so much more than some silly memorial service. And so I figured I would sing the first song in his memory. He sang this to me when I was in the hospital and I remember him telling me that he sang it when no one else was around. He prayed so hard that I would wake up and it really opened his eyes and he truly believed in God after my miracle. So Finn, thank you for taking care of me and being there for me every step of the way and for saving my life. You will always be our guardian angel." Noelle looked up at the ceiling and smiled as she said this and Brad the Piano Player and the string quartet started to play.
Noelle:
Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Don't be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
'Cause I've seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You don't know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less
I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
So if you're mad, get mad
Don't hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well I'm a lot like you
When you're standing at the crossroads
Don't know which path to choose
Let me come along
'Cause even if you're wrong
Noelle with New Directions:
I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
I'll stand by you
Take me in into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
Whoa
Noelle:
And when...
When the night falls on you, baby
You're feeling all alone
You won't be on your own
Noelle and New Directions (Noelle):
I'll stand by you, (Oh)
New Directions (Noelle):
I'll stand by you, (I'll stand by you)
Won't let nobody hurt you (Nobody hurt you)
I'll stand by you
Noelle and New Directions:
Take me in, into your darkest hour
New Directions (Noelle):
And I'll never desert you (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I'll stand by you, (Yeah)
I'll stand by you
(Won't let nobody hurt you) Won't let nobody hurt you
(No, no, no, no) I'll stand by you
Noelle and New Directions (Noelle):
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you (I'll never desert you)
New Directions (Noelle):
I'll stand by you, I'll stand by you (I'll stand by you)
Won't let nobody hurt you (No, no, no)
I'll stand by you (I'll stand by you)
"What do you mean, the tree is gone?" roared Noelle as she and Puck stood with Coach Bieste.
"Someone janked it from where it was planted," said Coach Bieste.
"Puck..." started Noelle with a glare.
"Don't look at me!" said Puck. "I was with you guys last night, remember?"
"Okay, well, if you didn't take it, then who did?!" roared Noelle. "I paid good money for that tree!"
"How much DID you pay?" asked Coach Bieste.
"That Magnolia tree cost me like eighty bucks!" sighed Noelle in exasperation. "I planted it cause Finn and Rachel used to sit under the same kind of tree until Coach Sylvester cut it down to make room for her Cheerios' warming tent during football games. They'd even carved their initials in it!"
"So did Quinn and I," said Puck, sad that the tree was long gone. "We added Beth's name below ours after she was born."
"I bet you that Coach Sylvester did it," muttered Noelle in anger. "She's always hated Finn."
Just then, Kurt came running up to the three.
"You guys! Coach Sylvester's making the Cheerios take down the Locker Memorial!" Kurt shouted in horror.
"What!" shouted the three.
"I knew it! I knew she was behind this! COACH SYLVESTER IS GOING TO PAY!" cried Noelle.
"DON'T TOUCH THAT MEMORIAL!"
Noelle's deafening words echoed through the hallway and everyone in the hall, including Coach Sylvester, the Cheerios, Will, Emma and the New Directions and Alumni froze and turn to see a fuming Noelle, Kurt, Puck and Coach Bieste storm through the hallway.
"I'm sorry Gimpy, but the Fire Marshall says this memorial is a fire hazard," said Coach Sylvester.
"Like hell it is!" cried Puck.
"Touch that memorial and I swear to God, you will pay Sue Sylvester!" said Noelle angrily. "You stole Finn's tree, and now you're ruining everyone's way of remembering him! He saved my life!"
"Sorry to burst your bubble, Gimpy, but that tree was not authorized to be planted on school grounds," said Coach Sylvester.
"Oh hell yes it was! I got permission from the new superintendent!" hissed Noelle. "And when he hears of this, be prepared to pack up your shit and get the hell out of McKinley!"
"Language Gimpy, might I remind you that as a former student, you have absolutely no business here whatsoever," snarled Sue. "None of you alumni do."
"Actually, yes they do," said a voice. Everyone turned to see the new superintendent, Bob Harris, walk down the hallway towards the crowd.
"Superintendent Harris!" said Puck. "Coach Sylvester stole Finn's tree and she's trying to make everyone take down the locker memorial!"
"The memorial stays," said Superintendent Harris. "Finn Hudson was a good kid and a hero. The alumni here are honoring their friend and mentoring the new members of the New Directions and have every right to be here at this school. They are welcome back anytime. Coach Sylvester, you have twenty-four hours to replace the Magnolia tree that Miss Hudson purchased to honor her brother's memory or you will be fired."
Coach Sylvester snarled, her nose flaring and her eyes widening in anger.
"Here comes the rampage," Kitty muttered to Harmony, who was looking between the two in fear. Sure enough, Sue started to lung for Superintendent Harris and the group scattered when she changed direction and pushed Noelle to the ground before flinging peoples' books out of their hands and stormed to her office.
"Noelle! Are you okay?" asked Will as the others rushed over to her.
"That. Woman. Is. A. Menace. To. Society," Noelle snarled as she grimaced in pain while holding her injured wrist.
"Miss Hudson, I am so sorry, is there anything I can do for you?" Superintendent Harris asked.
"Fire Coach Sylvester?" Noelle suggested.
"I can't, the school board won't let me," said Superintendent Harris. "They have to vote on her termination and none of them want to."
"She's bribed them or threatened them," Santana suggested. "Let me go all Lima Heights on her, I swear to God!"
A little later, the group of New Directions, young and old, sat in the auditorium as Artie and Sam paid tribute to their departed friend.
Artie:
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you
Sam:
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
Artie and Sam with New Directions:
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Sam:
Won't you look down upon me Jesus
You got to help me make a stand
You just got to see me through another day
Artie and Sam:
My body's achin' and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Artie and Sam with New Directions:
Oh I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again.
Artie:
Been walkin' my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Sam:
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Artie and Sam with New Directions:
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
Artie and Sam:
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again now
New Directions:
One more time, one more time
Artie (New Directions):
Thought I'd see you (One more time again...) one more time again (again)
Sam:
There's just a few things comin' my way this time around now
Artie and Sam with New Directions:
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Later that evening, Burt, Carole, Noelle, and Kurt were going through the remainder of Finn's belongings that had not been moved to New York.
"I marked these boxes so it'd be easier to separate things," said Noelle.
"Thanks, honey," said Carole.
"You don't have to do this now," said Burt to Carole. "It can wait."
"There's no timetable," said Kurt.
"No," agreed Noelle.
"We should do it now, or I'm afraid I'll never do it," said Carole as she started to go through Finn's momentos.
"Look," said Noelle excitedly. "It's the ball from the championship game me and the girls played in. He kept it." Noelle turned to Burt, the ball in her hands. "You should keep this, Dad."
"That was the weirdest football game I'd ever been to, but you and Finn sure kicked ass at that game," said Burt. He shook his head. "You keep it, Sweetheart."
"Look, it's the faggy lamp from my Marlene Dietrich basement redecoration!" said Kurt.
"I think he kept it in here to prove a point to Burt," said Carole.
"You know, if it's, uh, okay with everyone, I think I'd like to keep that lamp," said Burt.
"No, it's not okay with me," said Carole. "That thing is awful."
"I need a lamp in my office at the shop," said Burt. "I tore into him about this lamp. You know, I was right, in principle, but, you know, come on. The kid didn't have a prejudiced bone in his body. I knew what he meant when he was calling it faggy. I wasn't teaching him a lesson in tolerance, I was teaching myself one, and he was just unlucky enough to be there for it."
"Finn knew how you felt about him, honey," Carole said to Burt.
"He kind of liked it when you yelled at him," Noelle shrugged.
"Should've hugged him more, you know?" Burt asked teary-eyed. "No, it was always you know, we'd fist-bump or we'd high-five, but I should've given him more hugs. You know, the last time I saw him, he was so bummed out about some test at school, and I just, you know told him to get back at it, you know? He was worth it. It was the perfect time for a hug. But for whatever reason, I just I gave him a pat on the back and that's that. Now he's gone."
Noelle saw Carole go to put Finn's letterman jacket in the Donation box and took the jacket from her.
"Oh, d-don't," said Noelle. "I need that. I want it." Noelle put the jacket that was two sizes too big for her on her. Her face was sullen as tears streamed down her face. "Seeing him wearing this, it was like Superman had arrived. And he was Superman. He saved me from getting hit by that car." She inhaled the jacket's scene. "It even still smells like him. God, his arms were long."
There was a brief pause as Noelle started to cry and Burt pulled her and Kurt into a hug.
"I always thought that when I, uh How do parents go on when they lose a child?" Carole asked the three. "You know, when I would see that stuff on the news, I'd shut it off, 'cause it was just too horrible to think, but I would always think: how do they wake up every day? I mean, h-h how do they breathe, honey?" Carole was starting to cry. "But you do wake up. And for just a second, you forget. And then oh, you remember. And it's like getting that call again and again, every time. You don't get to stop waking up. You have to keep on being a parent, even though you don't get to have a child anymore."
"You have us, Mom, you will always have us," cried Noelle as she hugged her mother. "And Rachel. Rachel and Finn gave you two beautiful grandchildren that will get to carry on the Hudson name. It's not over for you, Mom. You will still have us. And we will never forget Finn."
The group came in for a hug and they sat there in the bedroom crying.
The next day, the alumni and the current New Directions were back at McKinley, restoring the locker memorial and the newly replanted Magnolia tree.
"This is sort of cheesy," started Kitty as Blaine and the others laid pairs of red drumsticks down at the foot of the memorial.
"No, it's beautiful," said a familiar voice. The group turned to see Rachel and Quinn standing there with the kids.
"Rach!" said Noelle. "What are you doing here?"
"I just had to see it," said Rachel. "Thank you. Thank you all. He loved you guys so much."
"Quinn, why didn't you call me? I would have come picked you up," said Puck as he took Beth into his arms for a hug.
"Beth wanted her daddy, she's been crying for you the last couple days," said Quinn as Beth buried herself into Puck's shoulder.
" I miss Uncle Finn," said Beth in between sobs. "I miss him Daddy. He promised to read me a bedtime story."
"That's right, he did," pouted Noelle as she tightened the jacket around her. Billy and Reagan were looking at everyone confused. It was expected though since they weren't old enough to know what was going on. Puck sighed and knew that it was time to sing in honor of his best friend.
Everyone headed into the choir room sans Rachel and Quinn.
"Come on Rach, let's take the kids to see the tree Noelle planted, yeah?" Quinn asked as Rachel wiped away her tears.
"Yeah," said Rach with a half-smile.
Meanwhile Puck, had started playing his guitar in the choir room and started to sing.
Puck:
Well, we bursted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a 3-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down
Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers on the winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Well, now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
And I'm ready to grow young again
And I hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yards
Well even we can cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars
'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers on a summer's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Huh ah ah ah ah ah ah
Huh ah ah ah ah ah ah
Now out on the streets tonight the lights are growing dim
And the walls of my room are closing in
But it's good to see your smiling face
And to hear your voice again
Now we can sleep in the twilight
By the river bed
With a wide open country in our hearts
And these romantic dreams in our hands
'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers on a summer's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
No retreat, baby, no surrender
The group stood up and hugged Puck. Puck hugged Noelle and broke down as the two cried together, the others surrounding them.
A short while later, Rachel and Quinn had returned to the choir room and now Rachel stood in front of the group, ready to honor her late husband.
"Nobody treat me with kid gloves, okay?" Rachel asked the group. "I don't know what to say, either. I loved Finn, and he loved me, and he loved all of you guys. I know he did. I like to sing in the car and, um and before Finn, I used to sing alone and this was the first song that I sang with him when we would drive around together, so this is for him."
Rachel:
When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong
I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
And I'd go crawling down the avenue
No, there's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
Oohh
Hmmm
Oh, the storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love
To make you feel my love
Puck and Quinn were sitting under the Magnolia tree. Noelle and Josh had offered to watch the kids while Rachel took care of some things in town and to let Puck and Quinn remember their best friend.
"So, what do you think?" Puck asked Quinn. "When this tree is 30 feet tall and the kids come to make out under it like we used to with the old tree, will they know who it was planted for?"
"Probably not," said Quinn as she put a hand over her bulging belly.
"You know what's tripping me out is this line between the two years," said Puck. "It's his whole life. Everything that happened is in that line."
"What are you gonna do with your line now, Puckerman?" murmured Quinn as she traced the bronze name plaque that had been put into the ground next to the tree. Noelle had ordered a bronze plaque to match his headstone in the cemetery that read:
Finn Hudson 1994-2013
The Quarterback, Leader, Husband, Father, Brother, and Friend to All.
"Well, let's see, we're moving back here after you graduate, and I'm going into the Air Force," Puck murmured as he pulled his wife closer. "I have a smokin' hot wife, a beautiful little girl, and another bad-ass kid on the way. I think my life is set."
"Puck, I found out the sex yesterday," said Quinn as she put her hand on her stomach. "I had an appointment and Rachel went with me."
"What is it?" Puck asked excitedly.
"A boy, we're having a boy," Quinn said to him as she looked at him with tears.
"Really?" Puck asked excitedly.
"Yeah," said Quinn with a teary-eyed smile.
"Can we name him after Finn?" Puck whispered.
"You know my pick for a boy's name when I was pregnant with Beth was Alexander, so how about Alexander Finn?" Quinn murmured.
"I think it's perfect," Puck replied back, kissing his wife.
"Don't get killed, Puckerman," Quinn murmured as they pulled apart. "I can't live without you."
"I promise, and I promise I'll be home in time for the birth," Puck replied, resting his head against hers.
"I love you," Quinn said.
"I love you too," Puck replied, kissing her again.
"Hey, Mr. Shue," said Rachel as she walked into the choir room carrying a silver case.
"Hey, Rachel," Will replied. "I get flashbacks when you walk in here and say that. Good ones."
"How are you doing?" asked Rachel as she set the case on the piano.
"Everyone keeps asking me that," said Will.
"Well, from what I hear, you've been a rock for everyone, so I know that that means that sometimes you don't get to grieve yourself," Rachel replied.
"I'm okay. I mean, I'm I'm really not okay, but, uh, yeah, I'm-I'm okay. More importantly, how are you?" Will put his hand over hers and Rachel sighed as tears fell down her face.
"I have no idea. I talk to him a lot. I can still see his face and can hear his voice so clearly. Do you think that I'll ever forget it? Cause I'm afraid that one day, I will."
"What do you talk to him about?" Will asked.
"Anything," Rachel replied. "I talk to him about Wicked, and the kids, and how much I miss him and that I wish he was laying in that bed holding me close. He was my person." The tears were freely flowing down Rachel's face as she sobbed.
"But thank you so much for doing this. I felt like I didn't know if I would be able to sing again, but now I know that I can." Her fingers traced over the silver case as she opened it. "And I know that there have been a lot of memorials for him, but I had this made, and I was hoping that we could hang it in here." She lifted out a wooden plaque, similar to the one that had been made in Lillian Adler's honor. Finn's Senior Picture rested in the middle of the plaque, with a gold nameplate below.
Finn Hudson 1994-2013
"The Show Must Go All Over The Place...Or Something."
"Did he really say that?" laughed Will as he looked at the plaque. Rachel laughed while still crying and nodded.
"He was smart, just, you know, in an in an untraditional kind of way," said Rachel.
"Come on, let's let's hang it right over there," said Will, taking the plaque from her and leading her over to the wall. He hung up the plaque on an empty nail and the two stood there and looked at it.
A few days later, the New Directions, Quinn, Beth, Will, Emma, Coach Bieste, Ruth, Judy, Sarah, Carole, and Burt gathered at the Greyhound Station to say goodbye to Puck as he headed to Texas for Boot Camp.
"Take care of yourself, Puck," said Coach Bieste. "Don't get shot, alright?"
"I promise," said Puck with a laugh as he hugged her.
"Behave yourself," said Will as he shook Puck's hand and hugged him.
"I will Mr. Shue," said Puck. "Finn will take good care of me. He'll look out for me up there."
Everyone smiled as Rachel and Quinn looked up to the sky.
"Come back in one piece, Bro," said Sam as he hugged Puck. "We need you to be in one piece for when we win Nationals so we can celebrate."
"No prob," said Puck.
After everyone took turns hugging Puck, and Ruth cried profusely for five minutes ("MA! I'm going to be fine! Let me go!" Puck had exclaimed), Puck turned to his wife and daughter.
"I love you, be careful and come home to us safely," Quinn cried into his shoulder.
"I love you too," Puck said. He kissed Quinn passionately to wolf-whistles and hoots from the group and Beth made a face.
"Eww," Beth commented. Everyone laughed and Puck knelt down to his little girl.
"I'm gonna miss you too, Monkey Face," said Puck. "Be good for Mommy, Grammie, and Nana, and help Mommy if she needs something okay? We need to make sure your brother gets here safely and healthy."
"I love you Daddy," said Beth.
"I love you too, Monkey Face," said Puck.
"Attention Passengers, this is a boarding call for Greyhound Schedule 1101, with stops in Dayton, Cincinnati, Louisville, Bowling Green Kentucky, final stop in Nashville with transfers to Dallas, San Antonio, Chicago, Little Rock, and all points West and South. Please have your tickets and identification ready for the driver."
"Well, that's me," said Puck. "I'll call you guys when I get there." He gave Quinn and Beth one final kiss goodbye. He kissed Quinn's bulging belly and smiled at Quinn.
"I love you," said Quinn.
"Love you too," said Puck. He looked at the others.
"Bye guys, see you soon," said Puck.
"Bye Puck!" chorused the group as Puck headed into the line. The driver noticed the large group as Puck handed him his tickets.
"You have quite an entourage there," commented the driver.
"Yeah, those are my friends and my wife and daughter and our moms," said Puck. "It's been a rough month, but I couldn't ask for a better support group."
"Well there you are, Airman Puckerman," said the driver as he handed him the transfer tickets and his Air Force ID back.
"Thank you Sir," said Puck. He gave one final wave to the group and blew a kiss to Quinn.
"I seriously hope you're with me, Finn, cause God knows I need a guardian angel while I'm doing this," muttered Puck as he settled into his seat and put on his headphones. A familiar tune came on shuffle as the bus pulled out of the depot and he smiled and waved to the group standing outside, waving goodbye.
You're not alone
Together we stand
I'll be by your side, you know I'll take your hand
When it gets cold
And it feels like the end
There's no place to go
You know I won't give in
No I won't give in
Keep holding on
Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
Just stay strong
Cause you know I'm here for you, I'm here for you
There's nothing you could say (Nothing you can say)
Nothing you could do (Nothing you could do)
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So (keep holding on)
'Cause you know we'll make it through, we'll make it through
