A/N: Well, this is it. The very last chapter of True North. I hope that all of you enjoyed this story from its inception to the end. I really do apologize for taking so long to have it all finished. Enjoy and look for a new story coming soon called Lights, Cameras, Kiss Me.
Disclaimer: I do not own the major characters to this story. Also this chapter contains scenes from Once Upon A Time in which I cannot lay any claim on.
Epilogue:
Rome. A thing of the past. Her past. Another distant memory locked inside Emma's mind. She'd brought Killian back only to almost lose her own life in the process. And now he was lost once more.
Rumpelstiltskin had achieved his goal with the author. They created an alternate universe where the villains were the heroes and people like Emma's own mother were to be feared. It was Snow, now known as the Evil Queen, who had seen to it that Emma was locked up inside this lonely cell in a tower across the sea where no one dared to sail.
Each morning, Emma awoke screaming as all the details of everything that had happened flooded her mind. She couldn't even have the luxury of forgetting. That was her curse. She had to remember.
Emma had no idea where anyone was. Only Lily. Her jailor. The woman who took great pleasure in tormenting her daily. Feeding her rarely. Her dragon's fire would bite at Emma's flesh when Lily grew angry.
And Henry. Emma wasn't even sure if he existed in this new world. Her own son might no longer exist. Then there was Killian. He could be anywhere, if Rumple even dared let him live. Only he and the author knew of what sort of torture Killian endured on a daily basis. Emma's one hope was that he couldn't remember too. She knew he could survive. Somehow. He had beaten the Devil, or one of his henchmen. Emma still was unsure exactly of the level of evil they fought in Rome. Only that Killian had seen to it that they were no longer afraid of its return.
Emma crouched down to relieve the pain from her shackles. She could only sit here and wonder. No answers were forthcoming from Lily. And with Snow locking Emma away, Emma was sure there was no rescue to be had.
Father Bastian had expedited their departure from Rome. It should have been only a few weeks ago, but with this alternate reality it was hard to tell. The older man had paid for a doctor to release Emma so that they could fly home only a few days after the episode at the church.
Their journey home had been long but felt wonderful, until at least the author pulled his latest stunt landing them all here. Robin had gotten the compass to work so that they could reenter Storybrooke. Everyone awaited them with open arms at Granny's. And Emma made sure she told her parents that she forgave them. How could she not after all that had happened. And Henry barely let her go all night. Emma should have known from past experiences that things would turn around quickly from there. They always did.
The author's new world was something Emma hadn't believed at first. Snow and her father cornered her and threw her first in a dungeon after it was known that she called herself the Savior. But that wasn't enough for them. Snow hadn't felt safe having Emma so close. She paid a horrid captain to bring Emma to this island. And that is where she had been since.
Emma desperately wished she could find some way to be released. If she could, maybe she could find some way to reverse all of this, even without her powers. Regina might still have some magic and with the two of them working together, they might be able to get to the author and see to it that everything was put back the way was.
A clang rang in Emma's ears and her eyes raised to find her cell doors opening. It was too early in the day for Lily to come. A brown hair young man pushed his way in.
"Hi. My name is…"
"Henry?"
"Mom?"
"Henry." Emma rose from the floor dragging her chains with her.
"You remember?"
"I knew you'd find me." Emma smiled. The first genuine smile she had in what felt like, and could possibly be, years. Henry hugged her and Emma relished the feel of his arms around her. It felt wonderful. The first bit of human contact she'd had in so long.
"I don't understand. How did you remember when no one else does?" Henry began to release the heavy shackles from around her wrists with a key.
"That must have been part of Gold's plan. My punishment in this world is that I know the truth but I am powerless to do anything about it. In this world I am no longer the Savior. I've got no magic."
"That's okay," Henry reassured her. "I think I know what to do. Now come on."
He led her down the long winding stairs as he told her his tale of the Ogre and Regina. How Regina needed to stop the wedding of Zelena and Robin before the bells rang or else everything would remain as it was. Emma listened intently, but she knew time was of the essence and she had yet to find out how he had even gotten here. Lily would discover Henry's duplicity soon enough and they needed as much space between them and Lily or else she might capture them all.
Emma began to run ahead of Henry, fearful that if he went first that he might be in danger and she refused to see him hurt. She looked back at Henry still amazed by the resourcefulness of her son to rescue her and almost began to smile when she ran into someone at the base of the stairs. Someone who did not feel at all of the same stature as Lily.
Henry cleared his throat. "Um, Killian. This is my mom. Mom, Killian."
Turning, Emma stared at the man she loved in wonder. He was alive and here. The shocked look on his face as he took her in didn't even dissuade her. It was in that moment, in that split second of time, that Emma knew. Everything was going to be fine. They somehow found a way to each other's side. Fate couldn't be cruel enough to separate them again. It seemed they were forever destined to meet time and again. To fall in love. To make each other whole.
Times ahead would be tough, Emma was sure of that. Living in Storybrooke, or even the Enchanted Forest, was never easy, but together they were bound to find a way. Their love was strong enough to battle the demons they faced in Rome, they were bound to fight their way through this. A few curve balls from Rumple or whoever else showed up couldn't even compare.
It didn't matter. Come heaven or hell, they would find their path together. They could overcome it all.
THE END
