Chapter 6: A Great Musical Score

After a while it felt like any ordinary sunday morning. Scooby Doo reruns tended to have that effect on Kazuha, creating a nostalgic feeling of childhood and safety. Heiji, on the other hand, could lose himself in any kind of mystery show, even if the characters were merely animated. When the show ended and the opening of Pinky and the Brain started to play, Heiji grinned and imitated Pinky's squeeky voice: "Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?" Kazuha laughed and answered in a dark voice: "The same thing we do every night, Pinky! Try to take over the world!"

Heiji chuckled and switched off the TV. "No, really. What do you wanna do today?" Kazuha looked stunned. "I thought we'd just hang," she mumbled and sprawled a little on the sofa. Heiji tried to hide a slight blush that crept up his neck. The way her shirt flattened against her chest when she moved like that brought pictures to his mind he did not want to think about right that moment. He cleared his throat and sat up straight. "How about I treat you to a movie?"

"Is there a new murder mystery in the cinemas?" Kazuha sat up as well, while Heiji rolled his eyes. "No, Ahou, there isn't." - "But you never go to other movies. You said they're too boring to pay for!" This time, Heiji's cheeks became tinted slightly pink. "It's a thank- you gift. Since you came to Eliza's party yesterday, even though you didn't want to and hated most girls there." Kazuha still looked dumbfounded. "You can choose the movie, 'zuha..." he added impatiently. Her eyes widened and she stared at him in shock. "So... Let me get this straight. I may choose any movie I like? May it be the sappiest, most horrible dumb chic flic and you are not only going to pay, but sit through the entire thing next to me?" In Heiji's head the 'next to me' part did not sound half-bad. He nodded in agreement. "That's what I meant by 'I treat you'. Deal?" A wicked grin played around Kazuha's lips. "Oh, we have a deal," she smiled, and Heiji could not help but hear some undertone he did not quite like. "I really want to watch the new Cinderella adaptation." The dark- skinned man groaned. "That Disney- crap?" - "Hey! You know I love Disney, don't start on that!" Heiji heaved a sigh. This was going to be a long day.

When they neared the movie theatre, Heiji took Kazuha's hand, and could not help but notice how small it felt in his. Startled, she looked up at him, but before she could ask he told her: "I'm still your boyfriend and there could be other people from school around," even though he really doubted they would see anyone they knew. Kazuha thought about it for a moment and nodded impalpably. Decidedly, she entwined her fingers with his and Heiji gulped. The touch of her fingertips felt way too good. Maybe he could stand a 104 minutes of fairytale crap for this.

A smile plastered on both of their faces they arrived at the cinema. Heiji bought the tickets and they entered the popcorn line. Heiji knew Kazuha could never watch a movie without a bucket of popcorn, some M&Ms to mix it with and a soda. When she was about to pay for the food he held her back. "I'm your boyfriend. I'm paying!" The huge blush on Kazuha's face and the way an unknown group of younger girls swooned over his deed, as if he was Prince Charming himself, felt like enough of a refund for Heiji. He felt happy. Truly happy. He could not remember ever feeling this way with any of his real girlfriends. And he could not remember such felicity when he and Kazuha hung out before. It felt as if something had been missing. Of course, this bliss only lasted for about 30 seconds, for when he turned around he saw a group of girls enter the establishment and the blond in the ponytail was probably the last person he wanted to see that day.

Kazuha was just reaching for a straw to go with her soda, when Heiji whispered in her ear. "I'm really sorry, Kazuha, but... Eliza and her minions are here." She nearly hit over her popcorn, but did not turn around. Why did these girls have to watch a movie today of all days? As soon as they'd realize Heiji's presence they would barge in and bugger up their whole date. Wait, day, not date, of course. This wasn't a date. Well, of course this was a date, but not a date date. At least not in a romantic way.

But then again, Eliza did not know that. And Heiji did want them to appear as a couple. Kazuha took a deep breath and turned to face Heiji, who was still standing quite near from speaking in her ear. "Heiji, I haven't properly thanked you for treating me here today, yet!" she stated and while she leaned close to Heiji, Kazuha could see Eliza noticing them out of the corner of her eye. And she would have seen the blond girl turn possibly green when Kazuha's lips met Heiji's in a delicate, soft kiss, hadn't she been to occupied by the way his lips tasted of the coke in his cup. The kiss, even though it was quick and without any pressure, left Heiji breathless. "Y- you're welcome!" he stammered and took her popcorn just to have something to do. Kazuha felt satisfied. She took his arm and snuggled a little closer to him as they walked right by the group of stunned girls. Heiji still seemed baffled, as he did not even acknowledge their presence. Still, his detective senses kicked in as he heard them talk. "I think they're going to watch Cinderella." One of them whispered. "Well, just what we wanted to watch," Eliza hissed, turning towards the sales booth. "What? I thought we were going to see Fifty Shades?!" the first girl squealed, earning her a warning look from Eliza. "No, you idiot! We decided on Cinderella. Try to keep up, will you?!" Heiji sighed a little as he and Kazuha entered the screening hall.

Their seats were in the back of the room, since Heiji had decided to watch the audience rather than the stupid movie. But soon after the well known group of girls entered the screening room, their seating position became somehow annoying: Every few seconds one of the girls, who were seated directly in front of them, would casually turn around or fidget to get a look at Heiji and Kazuha. Obviously they were to report back to Eliza, who did not turn around herself once. Heiji was already on the verge of telling the girls off, when he heard Kazuha sigh. "Dear god, they are annoying. Could they be any more obvious about their spying on us?" She looked up at him, a stray popcorn tangled in a strand of her ponytail, which was lying on her shoulder and Heiji could not help but let go of his anger. "I mean, the movie hasn't even started yet, but if they keep rustling like that I'm not sure I won't throw my food at them!" she continued, absentmindedly putting an M&M in her mouth. A grin spread across his face. Some people would have been angry or annoyed, but leave it to Kazuha to think about throwing popcorn like a child. Again something moved in the aisle before them when two of the girls turned at once to see what was going on. Heiji chuckled and shot the girls a mocking glance, before turning to Kazuha again, who in turn seemed to be deciding on which popcorn she should use as her first projectile. "Would a whole hand-full be too blunt?" she was just murmuring, when Heiji's hand started to caress the nape of her neck. "W-what are you doing?" Her green eyes were wide with confusion and as the light in the room dimmed to announce the beginning of the movie, Heiji leaned down to whisper in her ear: "I think I'll have to take you to see this movie again." A tingle went down Kazuha's spine. "Why's that?" she whispered. "Are we leaving?" Heiji grinned at her. She loved that grin. It made him look like the little boy from all those years ago, before he became a famous detective. Her heart skipped a beat. "We probably won't be seeing much of it." His murmur gave her goosebumps as he captured her mouth in a searing kiss. Later on he would blame a temporary episode of insanity for his behaviour, but in that moment it just felt right. Distantly, gasps could be heard in front of them, but Heiji did not mind. This, he realized, was what he had wanted to do all day.

The brightening lights startled Kazuha and she flinched back. She blinked a few times until she remembered where she was. Next to her, Heiji cleared his throat and looked at the ground, where their popcorn was spilled - long forgotten. Even though he had tasted it on her lips at the beginning of their... well, for lack of better words, make-out-session. He felt hot all over and was never happier about his choice of not too tight trousers. Especially when he looked at Kazuha, who still seemed breathless. She unconsciously wetted her swollen lips with her tongue, which caused a not so subtle reaction in Heiji's belly, and looked around embarrassedly. When their gazes met, a nervous giggle escaped her mouth and she suddenly stood up. Heiji followed suit. The other girls were nowhere to be seen. "Great movie," he joked and the apparent blush on her fair skin became even more prominent. "Yeah, nice musical score," she added, because it was the only thing she had registered from the movie. Everyone else had moved outside already.

Kazuha straightened and brushed some left over popcorn pieces from her shorts, then giggled again, pointing to the scattered remnants of their food. "Well, those were a waste of money. Would have been better to throw them at Eliza, I think." She looked at Heiji, who shrugged. "I don't know. If our performance did not convince them we're a real couple, probably nothing will." Kazuha gulped. "Y-yeah, you're probably right." Unfortunately, she had not been thinking about their pretend for one minute during the movie. As she picked up her bag, Heiji took her hand. It was warm and familiar and Kazuha could not help but want to be in his arms again, to feel those hands on her back and in her hair. She was in big trouble.

Heiji's heart was racing. He had mentioned their pretend, but, in all honesty, kissing Kazuha had not just been a means to an end. Of course he had realized how Eliza had turned around when one of the girls squealed because of their kissing. He was still a detective after all. And he also noticed them getting up halfway through the movie and leaving. So why hadn't he stopped kissing Kazuha right then? The answer was obvious: He had not wanted to. But that did not mean he wanted their relationship to be real. It only meant that, now that he knew how feminine and unbelievably good she felt under his fingertips, it would be so much harder to look at her as just his friend again. He could not believe himself. He was on the verge of destroying a life-long friendship. So, as they walked home silently, her hand in his, his only thought was: He was in big trouble.

Author's Notes: Okay, probably too OOC, but nevertheless I wanted to write it, to move this story forward. And, honestly, isn't this what Heiji/Kazuha fans are waiting for? I know I am...
I would be pleased to hear what you think! Thanks a lot for reading!
