"Good morning everyone! And welcome to this year's annual school fundraiser!"

Frenzied voices quieted and excited heads turned.

"This year, we have the lovely ladies form Mrs. Purdy's science class," the woman speaking gestured extravagantly to the line of smiling girls made up from head to toe behind her. "who've donated their time to help us out! So, let's get started, shall we?"

The woman beckoned the first girl forwards. A petite girl with feathery blond hair flounced to the edge of the makeshift stage in the park and fluttered her fingers in a nervous wave.

"Alright, so first up," the woman said, "is Ms. Westfield. Cara, if you'll just come up here next to me…perfect! Now," the woman stepped aside to give Cara center stage. "You all know how this works: if you want to make a bid, hold up your paddle, the highest bidder gets to go on a date with the lucky girl! Alright, let's begin! We'll start the bidding at $10!"

A few boys held up their paddle, and the price went up at a steady pace. The girl was finally sold to her boyfriend for $45. She walked off the stage and gave him a big kiss, earning a chorus of wolf whistles from his friends.

Shyly, she linked arms with her grinning boyfriend and walked to the back of the crowd.

It went on like that for the next few girls, each being bought at different prices – both higher and lower than the first – and each kissing their dates once they were bought.

"Alright, next up, it seems we have Ms. Redfern. Okay," Jez trudged up to center stage as the woman spoke. "we'll start the bidding for Jez at $10. Do I hear $10?"

Morgead watched from the back of the crowd as more than a dozen paddles shot into the air. Not that it was surprising. Jez stood out enough from other girls on a regular basis, but looking at the line of girls on the stage, Jez stood out like a black iris in the snow. All the other girls wore brightly coloured summer dresses with ankle breaking high heels, looking frilly and happy. But Jez wore a tight black dress that barely went past her bottom, and with a top that turned to blood red fish netting above her chest and covered her arms and neck.

She stood moodily at center stage as paddles kept being raised and girl behind her glared enviously. The bidding was now at $50, and boys were still offering up their money.

Jez's angry eyes met Morgead's accusingly.

You'd better be ready.

Morgead rolled his eyes and sighed. The bidders were thinning out now, less and less having enough money to pay for the expensive date with Jez.

"Good!" the woman cheered. "Do I hear $135?"

Morgead watched as two paddles went up. The same two kept going up the next few times, until the bid reached $155.

"Oh, only one left," the woman looked surprized at how high the bid was getting. She glanced over at Jez glaring off in another direction. "Alright, going once…" she paused, and Jez looked over. "Going twice…" Jez stared at Morgead.

Morgead sighed and lifted his paddle into the air.

The woman blinked and exclaimed, "Oh! We have another bidder!"

People murmured and turned to look at Morgead curiously. He sighed and glared at Jez.

"Okay, do I hear $160?"

Morgead put up his paddle, but so did the other boy. Morgead looked for him and recognised him from the times he'd been bugging Jez after school when Morgead had been there to pick Jez up.

"$165?"

Both paddles went up.

"Oh my," the woman laughed and glanced back at the rest of the girls lined up at the back of the stage. They were all frowning and whispering, staring daggers at the back of Jez's head. The bid was up to almost twice as much as any of the other girls had gone for so far. "I think we'll skip ahead a bit," the woman laughed airily. "We'll go right to $180."

She obviously though that was going to end it, and Morgead waited to see if the other paddle would pop up again.

It did.

Morgead scoffed and locked eyes with Jez.

How much money does this guy have that he's willing to blow it all on you?

Jez scowled at Morgead and discreetly flipped him off, making him laugh.

"Wow! Okay, do I hear $185?"

Morgead waited a second; the paddle stayed down.

Jez perked up. She stood up straighter and looked quickly at Morgead, who stuck his paddle high in the air.

"$185! Going once! Going twice! Sold!" the woman cried. She peered out at Morgead and called, "Come on up to the front and get your date!"

Morgead chuckled and tucked his paddle into his rear pocket. He liked the sound of that; if only Jez would actually be willing to go through with the date part…he wouldn't mind seeing more of her in that dress.

Jez was waiting for him at the bottom of the short set of stairs that lead up to the stage. She fist bumped him when he reached her, and then let Morgead take her arm.

They were striding away when the woman on stage called, "What about the customary kiss? You're supposed to kiss your date once you've got her!"

Morgead and Jez both froze. Slowly, they let go of each other and turned around. Everyone was staring at them.

"Uh, no…" Morgead mumbled, just as Jez blurted, "Not a chance!"

A few people laughed, and all the girls still on stage exchanged snide looks.

A guy from the crowd called out in an obnoxious voice, "If you won't do it, I will!"

Another yelled, "Yeah! Come one man, hit that!"

Jez growled, but no one heard. The woman on stage was trying to calm the shouting crowd, and Morgead was trying to locate the first guy who'd yelled so he could break his neck.

"Come on," the woman prompted with a wide smile. "Just a little kiss. It's for charity!"

"How does locking lips help charity?" Jez snarled.

"It's part of the event, Jez!" A blond girl from the stage chided.

The others chimed in with various words of agreement.

"Well, too bad! Jez huffed. "I'm not kissing him."

She'd already stepped far away from Morgead and was now standing with her slender arms crossed defiantly, leaving Morgead standing tensely with his hands deep in his pockets a few yards away feeling increasingly hot-faced.

"Jez, would you please just kiss your date? He's paid so much for you, it's the least you could do."

Jez scoffed, laughed, and muttered, "Paid, my ass," and, "You can't make me!"

Another woman climbed onto the stage and said sternly, "Jezebel, you kiss that boy; otherwise it'll be a month's after school detention for you!"

Jez's eyes narrowed. She hated after school detention. Absolutely hated it.

She was quiet for a few seconds, thinking. Morgead could feel her anger rolling off her in waves.

She finally said, "But Miss, I can't kiss Morgead." And she sounded surprisingly calm.

"Oh? And why not?"

"Because," Jez peered down her nose at the woman on stage and then glanced at Morgead out the corner of her eye. "Morgead's gay."

There was a long, stretched out moment of silence in the crowd, apparently everyone had heard.

Morgead coughed and muttered, "I don't remember this."

"Of course you do," Jez snapped. She grabbed his arm and elbowed him in the gut when he opened his mouth again to defend his sexuality.

A few people laughed, and a few asked why he would buy her for so much if he was gay.

Morgead caught his breath and said dryly, "Oh yeah, now I remember. That's me: gay as you can be."

Jez nodded her approval and began dragging Morgead out of the park.

"Jezebel Redfern! You and I both know that that is a lie! Detention! For the next two weeks!"

Jez spun around and yelled, "Bite me! Oh, and another thing!" she stomped towards the stage while the teacher yelled about suspension.

"Whoa okay," Morgead grabbed Jez's waist and slung her over his shoulder, but she kept yelling.

"This entire thing is demeaning! And sexist! And chauvinistic! And – and – Morgead, put me down!"

Jez beat on Morgead's back, but he didn't let go, and instead walked stone faced through the crowd of laughing students and out of the park area.

When they were down the block, Morgead let Jez down to her feet again. She glared at him for a second, staying nearly toe to toe with Morgead. Then she stepped back, and turned away slightly. Morgead looked away as she reached into her bra and pulled out a wad of bills. She counted some out, and then handed a fistful to Morgead.

"Here. That's all of it"

"I think I should get extra for that little production at the end, there," Morgead drawled.

"Kiss my ass," Jez snarled, spinning on her heel and storming off down the street.

"Whatever you say," Morgead grinned darkly and stared after Jez in her tiny black dress.
