hi everyone, i haven't posted in a while, but i've had this half-finished for some time. thanks to you guys who reviewed and to everyone who follows :) jez is 16 here and morgead is 17 and (surprise surprise) i still don't own the night world; enjoy!
Life Plans
Her room was dark, but Jez could see. She chewed her lip and glared at the calendar. February 12. Second semester of her grade 11 year at the vermin school she forcibly attended.
They were talking about course selection for next year. About graduation. About college and university.
Jez didn't want to think about those things.
"Jez,"
Jez jumped and looked over her shoulder at Morgead as he pulled himself through her window. It was after midnight and the crescent moon hung in the corner of her window, sharing the frame with hundreds of twinkling stars.
Like he was reading her thoughts – and he probably was – Morgead glanced behind him and said, "I wish we lived somewhere where we could see the stars better. There's too much light."
Jez nodded solemnly to the silence that followed.
"Jez –" Morgead sprawled on his back on her bed and closed his eyes. "What's wrong?"
She was standing at the opposite side of her room as him in front of the Harley Davidson calendar nailed crudely to her wall. Morgead had done that.
"Morgead, do you ever worry about the future?"
Morgead blinked open his eyes and frowned.
"Whaddya mean?"
"Like, what are we going to do once we're grown up? I know we're vampires, but we still need to do stuff I guess, right? Like, we'll need jobs to pay for some place to live, and clothes, and gas. But that means getting a good job, which means going to university and getting a degree. But I have no idea what I'm supposed to do, Morgead! I don't know what job I'll want, so I don't know what courses to take, which means I probably wouldn't even get into any place that would accept my crappy grades," Jez gave a shuddering breath and sat down on the floor. "What am I supposed to do? I don't want to think about this."
The room was quiet as Morgead let Jez's hushed words sink in. He stared at her hunched back through a filmy beam of moonlight. Slowly, he rolled off the bed and crossed the room to sit with his back against the wall next to her.
Jez gradually raised her liquid moonlight eyes until they met Morgead's sparkling emerald ones.
"I tend not to worry about the future when I know you'll be by my side to help me," he whispered.
Jez frowned and lowered her eyes. She didn't know what she thought would happen as she grew older, but she expected she would move, get married; that sort of thing. Only, she couldn't exactly picture herself falling in love and marrying anyone . . . and she realized that her subconscious had always wedged Morgead in there somewhere.
"Hey," he rapped her leg gently with his knuckles and cocked a brow beneath his shaggy bangs. "Why don't we make a plan to just be hobos together for the rest of our lives? We can live in Golden Gate Park and run naked through the sprinklers in the mornings."
Jez snorted loudly and clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle her giggles as she shook her head and whispered, "Let's call that Plan B."
Morgead huffed playfully and mumbled, "I thought it sounded like fun."
Jez chuckled quietly with her fingers covering her mouth and scooted over to the wall next to Morgead. Scrubbing at her face with pale hands, she nestled into Morgead's side and nudged his head and tugged his arm until she was comfortable.
A growl reverberated through Morgead's chest as he was maneuvered into a cushion for Jez, and once she had finally settled, Morgead found himself with his arm around her neck and his chin resting on her head. Statically charged strands of red silk clung to Morgead face and chest, causing his nose to itch irritably.
Scraping Jez's hair off of him with his free hand, Morgead murmured, "Have you ever thought of just cutting your age here? Or soon? You'd never have to grow up."
"I've thought of that, trust me. But I'd have to leave town and move around so much."
"I would do it if you did, you know."
"I figured."
"I bet Bracken would come too. We could be like some weird foster family."
"Like Twilight," Jez chuckled.
"I draw the line at sparkling."
"Good, I don't think I'd be able to be seen with you if you did."
Morgead smiled into Jez's hair as she yawned and sighed contentedly, slumping farther into him and finally feeling the gentle pull of sleep.
"I hate to break it to you," Morgead murmured and closed his own eyes, snuggling Jez closer. "But you would sparkle too."
"Twins . . ." and then Jez was asleep, and Morgead was gone as well; both curled together, hidden behind a moon beam in the dark of Jez's room.
I hope the ending wasn't too hasty there but ok thanks for reading and i hope you were entertained :)
