Chapter 36: A Special Someone

Rin had never thought that Len would make this outfit for her after all those rejections. She posed in front of the mirror in the cheerleading uniform. She winked coolly, danced, twirled and did all sorts of silly actions in front of the mirror, but whatever she did, she thought she looked fabulous. Or maybe the outfit was the fabulous one. It fitted on her so well that she wondered when and where Len took her measurements.

She blushed. He wouldn't have studied her features, would he? If so, he was scarily accurate... and studied really well.

Suddenly, Haku stood behind Rin with her head tilted to the side to catch a glimpse of Rin's reflection in the mirror.

She asked curiously, "Who's that orange pudding guy?"

"You mean Len Kagamine?"

"Len... Kagamine?" Haku's voice lowered and she gaped in surprise. "Your older brother?"

"Wrong! We're not related at all!" Rin corrected and looked around the dressing room.

"Then, who's he?"

Seeing no one else around, she came closer to Haku and whispered into her ear, "He's the idiot friend I had always been talking about. Remember? The guy I hate."

Haku stared at Rin with a lopsided grin and teased, "Seeing you so happy over the orange pudding and the clothes, I think it is more than that."

"More than what?"

"Not hate."

"Huh?"

"You like him. No, no, you lo..."

"Ms Yowane!" Rin shouted and cupped her burning cheeks. "It's not like that. I swear!"

Haku chuckled and continued to tease her, "You're turning red, my dear. Your neck must be feeling hot too."

Rin rubbed her neck and muttered unconsciously, "Yeah..."

She stopped rubbing her neck and glared at Haku. Her face turned even redder than before and Haku laughed. Rin could never lie well. People used to say that eyes were like little windows to the unconscious mind but Rin's face was like a book. It was so easy to read her mind.

Haku picked up a file and sat on the couch, flipping through the pages quickly and asking, "How's it?"

Rin snorted loudly and retorted, "My neck is definitely not hot. My hairs are standing in disgust. Literally!"

Haku stopped flipping the pages and stared dully at her. "No, I mean the outfit."

"Wha... What?"

"He said we've to call him," Haku stated and closed the file hard. "If there's anything wrong with it. That's all. So, how is the outfit?"

"Work of an amateur," Rin replied in a sassy voice and flipped her hair away from her shoulder. "But I like it."

"If that's okay, I will contact him to ask how much he will charge us for this outfit."

Rin looked at Haku excitedly and said, "Oh, and ask him why did he make this for me? He rejected me lots of time, you know. How unexpected."

Haku rubbed her chin in deep thought and muttered aloud, "He must have already planned to help you but because you were so persistent, he pretended to reject you out of embarrassment. Some guys are like that. You thought he was pushing you away but he was actually pulling you closer to him."

"Huh? I don't get it."

"Don't worry. You will get it next time." Haku smirked and took out her handphone. "Geez... I've to tell the organisers to revert back to the old programme. How troublesome."

"It's not my fault!" Rin immediately barked in defense.

Haku looked up and stared at her with an eyebrow arched. Rin bit her lower lip and gave a soft awkward and muffled laugh.

"It's... Len Kagamine's fault."

Upon hearing that, Haku stifled a laugh and rolled her eyes. "Yeah, right, Rin."

"Popcorns, check. Two big bottles of coke, check. Sakine's beloved vodka, check. Party candies, check." Gakupo hummed happily and opened the freezer. "Kaito's ice-cream, check!"

For the first time in his life, this excited young man had friends coming over to his house... secretly. The last time he had invited his friends to his house was during his senior year of high school and with his parents' approval. It was a study session with two of his buddies. But this time, his parents were away for a friend's wedding dinner and he did not tell them anything about his three friends coming over to have fun. He could not inform them, even if he could, because his parents were particular about cleanliness. Imagine the mess after partying...

He felt bad though, but it was not like he did this type of thing behind his parents' back all the time anyway. After all, he was sure that he would call his three friends to clean up those messes before they could leave. He smiled evilly at the thought of it as he stepped into the living room with the bottles of drinks hugged tightly in his arms.

"Gakupo... Yo! Open up the door."

Startled by a voice, Gakupo stopped right in his tracks and turned his head towards the source of the voice. He saw someone looking through his window which was located along the corridor and waving at him with a smile.

"Kaito?" Gakupo called out and quickly put down the drinks on the table. "You're early. Why didn't you press the doorbell?"

"To surprise you," Kaito replied and pointed at the door. "The girls are here too. They know you're scheming something."

"What?"

"You made that evil face just now."

Oh no, was that obvious? Gakupo was so sure that it was a small evil smile.

Gakupo gulped and denied, "No, I didn't."

"Hurry and open up the door," Kaito continued to speak and disappeared from Gakupo's view, disregarding his denial.

Gakupo grunted and headed towards the door. Upon opening the door, Miku suddenly burst into the house and wrapped her arm around his neck while Meiko marched right in front of him with arms akimbo. Kaito just shook his head wearily with a smile.

"Say it, you're planning to slave-drive us!" Miku spoke threateningly as Gakupo struggled to break free.

"Hey! I'm not... planning anything!"

Meiko snorted. "Liar! I can read your mind."

"You girls are so... so..." Gakupo's voice slowly died down and he coughed loudly before shouting with all his might. "Abusive!"

Withdrawing her arm back to her side, Miku swept the imaginary dust off her blouse and said coolly, "I'm going back home now."

"Yeah, me too," Meiko said and waved goodbye to him.

Gakupo gaped at the girls' back, then turned to look at Kaito who seemed to enjoy the little drama before him.

"What the hell was that?" Gakupo grunted in a soft voice.

Kaito shrugged.

Gakupo sighed and shouted at the two girls who was walking towards the lift lobby, "Fine then! Leave! I will have the vodka all to myself!"

Upon hearing the word 'vodka', Meiko stopped and turned her head to face Gakupo. Smirking away, Gakupo knew that she would not be able to resist the temptation and she might...

"Seriously?" Miku blurted and patted Meiko's head like a little animal. "She doesn't change her mind that easily just because..."

"You got that for me?" Meiko interrupted as her eyes lit up with glee.

"Yup. But if you leave, I'm going to drink that."

"You know what, Kamui?" Meiko pushed Miku's hand, which was still patting her head, away and skipped towards Gakupo and Kaito. "You're the best!"

"Traitor!" Miku yelled and pouted grumpily.

... That's right. She would definitely give in.

"Enough of these rubbish, Tete! We've to welcome our guest of the show today."

"Oh, Tata. Who's the guest?"

"A comedian."

"Like the two of us?"

"Tete, you're funny. She's not like us! She's a girl."

"Female comedian? Let her join us so that we can call her..."

"Toto!"

"Or Titi!"

"Tutu will sound pretty nice too since the girl was a cheerleader before."

"Hold on, Tata. Isn't a tutu worn by ballet dancers?"

"Tete, it's just a name. A name!"

"Ouch! You don't have to shout at my ear!"

Roars of laughter followed after.

"Everyone, it's time to get a little serious. So... Let's welcome Rin Kagamine on stage!"

"And just to let you know, Miss Kagamine is a model, not a comedian! Even she's a comedian, she can never be as lovely as us, yeah?"

The cheers of the audience was so loud that Kaito had to press the remote control to turn down the volume. The other three pairs of eyes remained glued to the television screen as their friend took the stage wearing a cheerleading outfit. Meiko's eyes widened in surprise as she leaned forward to have a better look at the outfit.

"I thought she said she was going to wear my high school uniform," Meiko said. "How did she get this costume?"

"I don't think it's a costume..." Miku muttered out loud.

Gakupo nodded. "Perhaps she rented it."

"The design looks familiar. I think I've seen it somewhere before," Kaito claimed and rubbed his chin. "Where did I see it? Hmm..."

"Hi everyone, I'm Rin Kagamine! I'm a Law student but an awful noob at it. Really. I failed four assignments so far."

Meiko and Gakupo gaped at Rin's introduction. She was being awfully honest on television! The whole of Japan would know Rin's flaws... in just one day. Media could be so scary.

"Errr... Miss Kagamine... about you being a cheerleader... when did you take part in this exciting sport?"

Miku tapped Meiko's shoulder and asked in bewilderment, "Rin is in cheerleading?"

Meiko shook her head. "No, I'm sure she isn't... Or... don't tell me this is staged?"

"Me? In cheerleading? I'm wearing this outfit today because it was made by a special someone."

"Oh, come on! We all know that you're a cheerleader..."

"I'm not that spontaneous, Tete. I'm someone who always watches TV and falls in love with magazines models."

There was silence.

"Wow... wow... let's give Miss Kagamine a round of applause. Nice try in humoring your audience, newbie model!"

"Perhaps I should say more about myself. I don't follow rules and orders. So, nice try in trying to blend into... my little game of honesty."

Chapter 37: The Make-up Artist

Welcome to the judgmental world where everyone has to put on a mask and everyday is like a staged concert...

She was a cheerleader. She had good grades. She was a spontaneous person. She was the talented newbie model who was proudly chosen by ALICE Studio. None of which was true.

'You've received a text message from Len Kagamine. Open? Yes/ No.'

Yes.

'Hi Miss Kagamine... How's the outfit? I'm coming for your show later so please don't be distracted by me. Be yourself. It's important to be yourself, okay? All the best! - Len Kagamine'

Rin put her handphone and her script down on the dressing table, and stared at herself in the mirror. She was scared and anxious for this comedy variety show. It would be her first time on stage. It would be her first time having her face appearing on television, then on the newspapers and magazines the following day. It would be her very first time as a new Rin who was created by the script. Nobody would judge her for who she actually was as long as she followed the script.

But was that what she wanted?

Be yourself...
