Sorry I haven't updated in a while! I've been quite busy with school, but I am going to make time for this story!
Enjoy!
Once the darkness spread, Puck and Quinn decided to walk back up to the campsite. It was a five minute walk, but it was still fairly warm. When they arrived back, a campfire was going and everyone was sat around it. Sam was playing something on his guitar, a new song he'd wrote, Rachel and Finn were holding hands, Tina and Mike were making out, while Santana pretended to vomit, and Mercedes, Blaine and Kurt were roasting marshmallows on the open fire.
Quinn took a seat next to Mercedes, who passed her the bag of marshmallows. Puck sat on the log that Sam, Mike and Tina were sitting on and gladly took a beer that Sam offered.
"I hear you play?" Sam said to Puck, gesturing to the guitar placed next to him, resting against the log.
"Yeah, a little, I mean, self-taught, so I'm alright…"
Sam handed him the guitar, before taking a swig from his beer and nodded. "Go on, play us something."
"Yeah, play something. Preferably shirtless." Santana added. Puck smiled shyly and began strumming.
"Ok, but everyone's gotta' sing," He told them all.
At the word 'sing', everyone turned their heads, even Rachel, who had made an oath to herself not to look at Puck or Quinn all night.
Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar
My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking 'bout a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I'm trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Now I know that I'm not
All that you got
I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a toast
'Cause I found someone to carry me home
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
Tonight
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun
By the time everyone had stopped singing, they all applauded Puck and his playing. Quinn smiled to herself, knowing that having her friends supporting her relationship for once, actually made her deeply happy.
"So, who's dated who?" Puck blurted out after placing the guitar back on the ground, leaning it against the log.
"What?" Mercedes asked, confused by the question.
"C'mon. High School dating is one of the most complicated things ever. And I don't believe that there haven't been a few complicated relationships here." He smiled at how uncomfortable he made everyone, but still wanted to know the answer. Fortunately, Santana was quite happy about sharing the groups gossip.
"Well," She began, putting her third beer down in front of her. "Jew and T-Rex play eat-face daily, The Asian Duo are forever sharing egg-fried-rice, I'm gay for a hot blonde, but I tapped puffy-nipples once," She pointed to Finn, who was gritting his teeth and obviously trying not to respond. "Big mistake. He was tapping yours truly," She nodded at Quinn, who had her head in her hands, dying of embarrassment, knowing their list of relationships was never ending. "Lady-Quiff and Gel-Helmet are going steady and planning on adopting a chubby Chinese baby in the near future, but the midget in the relationship," She pointed at Blaine. "Played drunk-kissy-face with thick-brows," She pointed at Rachel. "And F-Cup Beyonce," It was Mercedes' turn to feel embarrassed. "Had a summer romp-session with trouty mouth," Sam's teeth were gritted, hiding his larger-than-average sized lips. "And fish-lips was totally picking baby names and wedding rings when he had his fair share of Blondie Fabray."
When Santana had eventually stopped talking, everyone went quiet.
"I think you forgot to mention that you slept with the majority of boys at McKinley." Rachel spat. "Including 'Hops', the one legged janitor!"
"He was cute." Santana murmured.
"And you're all friends after that?" Puck asked, his eyes wide with amazement.
"Yeah, I mean, we're like a family," Tina said.
"Yeah, incest is our thing." Santana joked, although no-one laughed. After an awkward silence, Finn stood up and caught the attention of everyone around it.
"We've been looking for a time to tell everyone and… we're just gonna come out with it." He was beaming.
"Finn, no, not now." Rachel pulled his arm and looked embarrassed.
"No, Rach, Let's just tell everyone."
"Tell us what? You haven't got a bun in the oven?" Kurt asked, eyes wide.
"What? No, no, no…" Rachel stood up awkwardly next to Finn.
"Okay, I'm just gonna say it." He took a deep breath. "Me and Rachel are engaged." His face looked like he had a hanger in his mouth, his smile was permanently stuck on his face.
Everyone gasped, even Mercedes, who betted that they'd be the first couple in glee club to tie the knot. Quinn froze. That was the last thing she expected. But the shock immediately disappeared and was replaced by anger.
"What?" Quinn was tired of keeping everything in, and before she could control it, she was stood up, cheeks burning while everyone looked at her.
"We're engaged," Finn repeated happily, while Rachel stood next to him with a forced smile, holding out her hand to the others to see.
"That is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard." Quinn spluttered with anger. Everyone fell silent then.
"Quinn, what's the problem?" Finn asked while Rachel remained silent.
"My problem is that your fiancé is a gigantic hypocrite." She emphasised on the word 'fiancé', hoping her message would become clearer.
"What's going on here?" Mercedes asked, obviously interested in the gossip.
"What happened to not letting guys get in the way of your future? What happened to focussing on yourself and not getting heartbroken?" Quinn's eyes didn't shift from Rachel, who was nervously looking at the ground. "Because that's what you've been preaching to me. Guess it's different to you, because everything's about 'Finchel', right?" Puck stood up and reached for Quinn's hand.
"Come on, you need to cool off." He told her gently as he attempted to persuade her to move.
"Remember when you flipped when I was just talking to a guy?" Quinn pulled her hand from Puck's and carried on ranting. "And you were off getting engaged!"
"I was being a good friend!" Rachel finally spoke up.
"A good friend? Is that what you think you were?" Quinn laughed slightly. "Because a good friend would know all the crap I've been dealing with lately! Did you know my dad came back into town? Did you know that I've been staying at Mercedes' for almost two weeks?" Her voice was shaking, but she forced herself not to cry. Rachel tried holding her gaze at Quinn, but an insane amount of guilt swam through her mind. "I needed you, and you weren't there!" She knew it; tears were going to be falling within seconds.
"You wouldn't let me! You've been a closed book for weeks!" Rachel finally responded, although she looked like she was going to cry too.
"Alright," Santana stood up and beamed a smile at everyone. "I think we need to dunk both your heads in the cool box." She laughed, although everyone else was still staring at Rachel and Quinn. Quinn was panting now, and after a few seconds, turned around to Puck, who was standing behind her, and stared blankly at him. Somehow, he knew what she was thinking and nodded, before taking her hand again.
"And by the way," Rachel started again, obviously coming up with another argument. "I've been looking out for you all the way through this Yale thing, and that's why I'm not going to let you throw it away!"
Everyone stopped their quiet murmuring and immediately went silent again.
"Throw it away?" Mercedes was now confused, and said what she, Tina and all the other boys were thinking. Quinn felt a surge of panic, but decided not to show it.
"Come on, tell your boyfriend then!" Rachel cried. As Quinn turned back round, she couldn't see Puck's expression.
"Tell me what? What's she talking about? 'Throwing Yale away'?" Puck was calm, but Quinn could tell he was going to explode within minutes. Quinn felt her cheeks burning.
"Nothing, c'mon, let's go for a walk." Quinn spoke as casually as she could, but Puck remained where he stood.
"No, tell me." He said, firmly.
"Go on, tell him how you're staying in Lima." Rachel said, although there wasn't amusement in her voice, but worry.
"Staying in Lima? As in, not going to Yale?" Puck screwed his face up in confusion, waiting for answers.
"I was just thinking… how bad would it be if I went to Yale next year?" Quinn started with a hopeful smile. "I could take some classes at a university close to home, then go to New Haven in a year, or so."
"You're not serious?!" Puck was getting angry, "You're going to put off Yale University?"
"It was just an idea," Quinn noticed his anger. "Look, New Haven's 667 miles away. You said yourself, this feels special."
"You're not putting off Yale for me! Don't you know how selfish it is for you to give it up?!"
"Selfish? I'm sorry; I thought wanting to be with the person I love wasn't a selfish thing." She snapped back.
"Can we go and talk about this, alone?" Puck asked quietly, noticing everyone staring at them.
"Hell no," Santana laughed, while she ate from a bag of popcorn that she retrieved from her bag while no-one was looking.
"Are you saying you don't want to be with me?" Quinn asked, ignoring his request. Quinn's tone was no longer warm and loving. She sounded hurt, because she was.
"No, of course I'm not saying-"
"Then why are you getting angry at me?"
"I'm not angry, I just wish you'd-"
"This is my choice, and I want to be with you," She insisted, which earned an 'aww' from Kurt.
"You know I want to be with you too-"
"Then let us be together!"
"We can, just go to Yale!" Their voices were raised considerably now.
"This is my future! Why are you so adamant that I go?"
"Because you have to!"
"Why?!"
"I don't want to talk about this now!"
"Talk about what?!"
"This isn't the time, Quinn!" Puck forced himself to walk past her and over to the boys' tent.
"Tell me what's going on!" She yelled. He remained silent. She sighed heavily and walked past him. "Fine, don't tell me." She spat.
"I've been called for a second tour!" Puck yelled without thinking. Quinn froze, and pushed all immediate thoughts out of her mind.
"A second tour?" She said, slightly laughing with confusion. "Like," She froze again. "In the Army?"
Puck nodded slowly, while everyone stared at them in shock. Quinn wanted more than anything to wake up from that bad dream. But it was real life and, like Quinn always predicted, love had a way of working out in the worst possible way for her.
Finally arrived at the plot twist! It probably hasn't lived up to the hype by now!;(
But I hope some of you found it surprising!
And what are your views on Santana? I really enjoy writing her parts, so tell me what you think!
