I'm totally on a roll with this whole updating thing.
Disclaimer: I don't own FFVII nor its characters. I also don't own the ideas taken from Love Monster.
Today was one of those days where Cloud just wanted to sleep in. All the generals were in Wutai at the moment and Reno was in Rocket Town so he couldn't argue with him about his decision to accept Zack's offer to join the mentoring programme. Not that the Turk could do anything about it at this point. Cloud was already over two months in, so it was a bit too late to back out now. Not to mention that having to keep his wings in every time he used magic was really tiring him out.
"Cloudy!"
He groaned in irritation. He had almost forgotten that his hyperactive mentor had stayed behind.
"Spikey haired Cloudy, it's time to wake up." Zack sung loudly into the younger monster's ears.
"Lieutenant Fair, as much as I appreciate you being my mentor and everything, I had decided that today was going to be a rest day."
Zack pouted a little. "And here I thought I'd take you outside of Midgar to do a little training, and here you are turning my generous offer down."
Cloud almost immediately shot out of his bed and was in his uniform in less than a minute. Zack let out a small laugh. He knew that that would get the cadet out of bed.
"So, where are we going?" Cloud questioned eagerly. He hadn't been outside of Midgar since he got there and really wanted to see the outside city.
"Just the outskirts. We need to get back here before dark though. The more dangerous monsters come out then and we don't want them harming a single hair on your feathery head."
Cloud glared at him slightly for that comment. "I'm not that delicate." He pointed out and Zack just grinned before shoving Cloud in the direction where his swords, armour and materia were kept.
"Go grab your stuff that you think you need. Take some toilet paper with you if you think you're going to need to go in the bush. We don't want you to accidentally wipe your delicate little ass with poison ivy or something now, do we?"
Cloud sent Zack a disgusted look, but went to get his weapons anyway. He picked up his two lightest swords and placed them in the harnesses on his back before equipping the new bangle that Genesis had given him. It already had all the materia he needed in it so he didn't have to bother with deciding which materia he needed to bring with him.
"All set and got your toilet paper Spikey?" Zack questioned when Cloud walked into the lounge.
"Don't be silly Lieutenant Puppy."
Zack seemed to perk up at that. "Did you just make a joke Spikey?" Cloud gave him an odd look before he nodded his head. Zack pretended to wipe a stray year from his eyes as he let out ab obviously fake sob. "My little Spikey's growing up and making jokes and everything."
"Spare me the drama Zack." Cloud rolled his eyes, but he was smiling all the same.
The two headed towards the elevators and hit the button for the first floor. As soon as they hit the bottom floor and the elevator doors opened and that's when all hell seemed to break loose. There were employees running around everywhere and a large amount of cadets with guns shooting at something in the middle of the room. Both Zack and Cloud looked at each other for a moment before they both grabbed their weapons and headed to whatever the cadets were shooting at.
"Are you serious?" Zack questioned when they saw what the cadets were shooting at. There was a Behemoth in the middle of the Shinra Complex. "You have got to be kidding me." Zack said as the two of them watched the Behemoth shake off a rain of bullets like it was nothing.
"Where did that thing come from?" Cloud questioned.
"Well, judging from the way that it's reacting to the bullets…"
"It's not reacting to them. It's not even fazed." Cloud cut him off.
"It's probably from the labs." Zack finished as if Cloud had never said anything in the first place. As the SOLDIER spoke he pulled out his buster sword from his back and swung it a few times. "By the way, you wouldn't happen to have an ice materia on you would you?" Zack questioned as he pulled Cloud's bag from the cadet's back.
"Fire, lightning, quake and water." Cloud said as he turned his armlet around. "I have a one star Shiva that General Rhapsodos gave to me for going with him to see Loveless."
"That'll work, We don't need it for offence… Wait, he gave you a present?"
There was a sudden scream that brought the two out of their conversation. It seemed that the Behemoth had decided that the bullets were pissing it off and it was now attacking the surrounding infantrymen.
"I don't think now's the time to discuss presents." Cloud pointed out. "Maybe you should tell me what you're planning on doing about this thing instead?"
"So far, I've got zero plans, but if you could somehow build a wall and heard that Behemoth outside, that would be nice." Cloud gave Zack a weird look.
"It's going to make a big mess after."
"We'll worry about that later."
Cloud nodded and Zack was quick to order the surrounding people away and Cloud started pouring magic power into his summon materia. He could feel the orb growing warm in his hands as he summoned Shiva and she appeared before him in a stream of green and blue. The Behemoth turned its attention to her, roaring in anger. Cloud mentally told the summon to start building ice walls around the creature so that it would have no choice but to make its way out of the building. She quickly went to work, expertly dodging the Behemoth as it made to attack her. Once the wall was built, the creature rammed into them a few times, but luckily they held out.
"Now what do we do? It's blocked from getting here, but it's not leaving." Cloud pointed out.
"I was thinking you could use Shiva to lure it out." There was a piercing scream and they could see the tell-tale signs of a summon returning to the life stream above the wall. "But that idea's just been scrapped. So I could at least drive it away, but the problem is that we can't get over the wall now." Zack laughed sheepishly. Cloud sighed before he brought out his small wings.
"If you could jump and we get the timing right, that should be enough leverage for me to lift you over. It's just your buster that we're going to have trouble with."
Without hesitation, Zack threw the sword over the wall and Cloud heard it hit the floor on the other side.
"Well that takes care of that I guess." Cloud muttered to no one in particular before he wrapped his arms around Zack's waist from behind.
"You know Cloudy I know that you're good looking and all chocobo but I'm pretty sure you already know that taken."
Cloud just ignored the comment. "Ready?" He questioned and Zack sighed.
"Ready when you are… You know I thought we were getting some progress with the joking thing."
"Not the time Lieutenant."
"All the time is a good time Cloudy. On three then."
"One."
"Two."
"Three!" Cloud flapped his wings as soon as Zack took a huge leap and the two landed on top of the ice wall that Shiva had made.
"Alright Cloudy. I need you to make another distraction while I grab my sword and try to get this thing out of the building." Zack said and Cloud nodded as the wolf brought out his tail and ears. Cloud only had one more chance to summon Shiva before his magic levels would start getting dangerously low.
"I'll lure the Behemoth over there." Cloud pointed over at the part of the ice wall that was the closest to the entrance. "That should give you enough time to jump down and grab your sword right?"
Zack nodded and the cadet started running along the wall. Being careful not to slip and fall off. Luckily for him the Behemoth wasn't still ramming against the wall. Cloud was quick to throw a fire spell at the monster when he was close enough to the entrance and it roared in anger before it started charging in Cloud's direction. Zack was quick to take the opportunity to jump off the wall and grab his sword.
"Alright chocobo, leave this guy to me. I just need you to make sure that he can't turn his attention on anyone else. Also, you might want to re-summon Shiva." Cloud did just that. "Right, we're going to lead him straight to the end of the unfinished highway. There shouldn't be anyone there, so we can go as crazy as we want without too much collateral."
"Rodger that."
With that, the two set to work. Zack fought with the Behemoth enough to get the creature to focus all of its attention on him before he started running with Cloud quickly following with Shiva. The summon was quickly using its magic to create walls on Clouds command. Once they got to the end of the highway Zack instructed Cloud to close off the area. "Are you nuts? That's a hundred meter drop." Cloud argued.
"Well at least we'll know that this guy's definitely gonna die then." Zack replied as the Behemoth went charging at him. He dodged and it slowed to a stop just before it could fall off the edge. "Can you make a really thin wall of ice at the end while you're at it too?"
Cloud raised an eyebrow at that, while Zack dodged the behemoth again as it charged at him.
"Why?"
"This thing won't hesitate to ram into the ice cause he knows it won't break." Zack stated simply and as if to prove his point the Behemoth rammed into one of the ice walls. Cloud nodded his head in understanding before he ordered Shiva to create the two walls and Zack positioned himself in front of the wall at the end of the highway. As predicted the monster went to charge at him again and it didn't bother to stop at the wall and the ice immediately broke on impact. What Zack didn't expect though was a clawed arm taking a swing at him and he went flying off the highway.
"Zack!" Cloud was quick to jump after the other monster, grabbing his arm and attempting to use his wings to keep them both in the air.
"The hell Cloud? What do you think you're doing? Now we're both going to die!" Zack yelled. There was no way that Cloud's wings could lessen their fall at the speed they were going.
"I can't just watch you die Lieutenant?" Cloud said determinedly.
"Are you nuts? Let me go. At least your wings can hold you up enough for you to save yourself." Zack looked down. He had to get Cloud to let go of him soon. The ground was getting awfully close and they were going to land directly in the train graveyard.
Cloud on the other hand was having other thoughts. If he was going to save them both, he really had no other choice. Without a moment of hesitation he released the magic that was keeping his wings grey tipped and Zack stared in awe as Cloud's wings grew to their normal wing span, effectively slowing down their fall.
Over in Wutai, Genesis abruptly stopped his conversation that he was having with Sephiroth.
"What's wrong?" Sephiroth questioned as Genesis got up from his seat.
"Sorry Seph. Tell the higher ups whatever you want, but I need to go home, now."
