After Klaus opened the door, he had a glance down the hallway, Samantha was doing her job of keeping watch, so he looked back at Caroline and grazed her cheek slightly, before kissing her.
"We need to go." Samantha hurried them.
Caroline smiled with a final touch of his chest and left before she lost her courage, but halfway down the hallway, she stopped because Samantha backed away from where she was standing.
"There's no need to leave so hastily." Ansel addressed Caroline with a smile. "Niklaus would surely love to have your company tonight."
Caroline looked back at Klaus apprehensive, but he only had eyes for Ansel as the other neared Samantha.
"Your services are no longer required, dear." He pointed a gun at her and before she was able to react, he pulled the trigger.
The bullet was lodged right in the middle of her eyes and he then faced the couple with a smile.
Shocked, Caroline covered her mouth at the same time that Klaus protectively took her side.
"There was no need, really. My house was more than open for the woman my son chose for himself, at least for the trivial marriage duties." He glanced at the dead girl on the floor. "There was no use for all this contrivance."
"What do you want with Nik?" Caroline confronted him, just as a few men arrived to clean up the mess.
Ansel handed the gun to one of them. "The corridor is no place to talk, I don't like being sneaky in my own house, so let's all move to a more suited environment."
"When I asked you to teach me proper magic, I wasn't referring to candles. I have enough with Damon already, teasing me about levitating things." Rebekah slumped against the car with a sulk.
Bonnie smiled at her. "Just give it a try, Bekah." She held the candle in her hand.
Rebekah focused and after a little while, the candle had a little flame.
Bonnie placed her hand over the flame and the fire easily expanded as she lifted her hand, when she moved it down the flame became smaller.
Rebekah moved away from the car, it was like the flame was glued to Bonnie's palm and doing as she ordered. "How do you do that?"
Bonnie gave her the candle. "It's easy, all you have to do is think of a spell."
Rebekah moved her hand above the flame, she tried to mimic Bonnie's actions but nothing happened. "This is a waste of time, because my magic is damaged."
Bonnie laughed. "No, it's not. Stop being such a pessimist."
The reminder that she was the juxtaposition of Caroline, made her miss the other blonde.
"Damon is right, I can't do anything special with it, not even hurt vampires properly. I might as well resign to being a regular normal boring girl."
"But you're not just some human, you're an Original witch, Bekah." Bonnie determinedly moved the candle closer to her.
"What if I'm just… bad at this?"
Bonnie insisted by waving the candle in her hand.
Rebekah huffed some air out, putting the candle out in the process.
"Just focus. Just think of what you want to do and not how to do it. If you really want something, it will happen naturally because your magic lives inside of you."
Rebekah sighed with another look at the candle, like before, she was able to bring fire to it but her real test was pushing it after that.
She placed her hand on top of the flame and slowly raised her hand.
At first, the fire didn't budge but she was stubborn and half-closed her eyes, with that mental push the flame was strong and it became almost as high as Bonnie had managed before her.
"It's not so hard, is it?" Bonnie asked her with a wiggle of her eyebrows.
"What's next?" She asked excitedly.
"We'll practice, until you're able to set other things on fire." Bonnie answered mischievously.
Klaus was again in a room where the image of his mother was overlooking all the conversations that took place in here.
He kept a short distance from Caroline to make sure that he would stop anyone who tried anything.
Caroline looked at the painting with a sharp pain in her chest.
Ansel noticed her gaze at the masterpiece in the room. "I believe that you had the pleasure of knowing her."
Caroline chuckled, upset. "Yeah, she was really good with a knife."
"She had her own reasons, which belonged to her." Ansel replied with a look at Klaus. "We should wait for your brother, before we carry on with this conversation."
"I apologize in advance for the heads that stood in my way." Elijah stoically made his entrance.
"I left the easy distraction at the front gate." He simply said.
A big group of men wearing all black, came in.
The ones in the front pointed crossbows at Caroline, while another line guarded a now closed door.
Instantly, Klaus was uneasy, because he was confined to a small space with a lot of weapons and Caroline in the middle of it all.
"I really had hopes that we would overcome the distance, and the years that separated father and son."
Elijah chuckled. "You haven't earned the right to name your child. And I strongly suggest that you stop using it as simple leverage and tell us what you want with him."
"It's interesting that both you and Caroline have asked me the same question, repeatedly, while Niklaus has not." He looked at a silent Klaus. "Perhaps, because in his heart, he already suspects what I'm searching for."
Klaus didn't answer him, he was keeping an eye on the men with itchy fingers around a sensitive trigger.
"I knew that all this was a ruse." Caroline snapped.
Ansel wasn't too happy with her affront. "The fact that Niklaus holds the answer to something I want, is deeply entangled with what I crave, which is my legacy." Ansel turned towards the painting. "Shall I tell an old tale? I have always been very good at those."
Two of the men stepped in, to cover his back, which left Elijah unhappy.
"A long time ago, when the earth was more open land than concrete, there was no other creature like the wolf. He had no true rival in strength and dominance and the land was ours by right. Then humans came, always so smug in their shortcomings and greedy to take what wasn't theirs. They started off with the land, pushing the wolves into the forest, like shameful creatures, but they weren't happy with just that, and started killing the wolves. Naturally, we started fighting back. Whenever a supernatural fight for dominance ensues, the witches always tend to fall on the side they see worthy, but humans are resourceful and when one of them was bitten by a wolf during a full moon, they took the man to the shamans who used the energy of the full moon to fight back the wolf venom. That night, the first werewolf was born. There would be a long time again until humans were greedy again, but this time the tale has a name and a face."
He turned to his audience.
"Mikael wanted to exterminate our kind completely, so from that confrontation, the first vampire was born, and another fight for dominance started." He smiled. "It hasn't been a kind fight on either side, but occasionally, one of us finds the upper hand, like when Niklaus was turned and given the power to choose which side he wanted to defend."
"I didn't choose a side." Klaus spoke up quietly.
"Your relentless quest to break your werewolf side says a lot to me." Ansel told him.
"This Luna organization and everything that you've done in the shadows, is simply a battle between Lycanthropes and Vampires?" Elijah was beginning to worry and that didn't happen often.
"I'm just taking back what is ours by right, and no one better to take charge and lead everyone to victory, than my real son. He has no rival in our world."
"That's not all that you want from me, is it?" Klaus confronted him.
Ansel solemnly, had a small nod. "So, you finally arrived where I have been waiting for you."
Caroline looked at Klaus, she was less lost than she expected within the story but Klaus's expression left her concerned.
"Shall I carry on with the tale or would you like to have that honor?" Ansel asked Klaus, when he looked away, Ansel took it as an incentive. "On his quest to become what was his destiny all along, Niklaus uncovered a rare artifact that has great value to whoever owns it. Something that is as dangerous as it is powerful, but the desire of all wolves."
Elijah looked at his brother, he had no knowledge of such a finding.
"Nik?" Caroline also felt in the dark.
Ansel happily shared his knowledge. "There exists a sword that was forged under the fool moon, capable of killing every vampire and with them, everyone they ever turned. Unlike the Oak tree, that burns along with the dying vampire, this sword is the ultimate weapon to eradicate every single vampire from this world."
Caroline felt dizzy with the bomb, while Elijah frowned, divided between concern and disappointment that his brother had kept this hidden.
Klaus simply pierced Ansel with his angry blue eyes.
Kol and Damon liked what they saw when they arrived, Rebekah was laughing and twirling around with a bottle of beer in her hand, she shook her head to the sound of music, while Bonnie dropped her empty bottle into the bonfire with a sexy dance for Kol.
The girls were waiting for them, not far from where the school goodbye summer party happened, but this time it was a private celebration.
"I'm all in favor of the change of location." Kol smiled at Bonnie.
"Rebekah was in the mood for a little rogue dancing in the woods." She looked at him with a bit of rebellion in her eyes as well.
Like a magnet, their lips met, the kiss was long and slow and while it lasted the flames from the bonfire danced high, slave to the binding of their energies.
Dancing in front of Bonnie's car, Rebekah seemed ethereal to Damon, she was moving gracefully and the dim light from the headlights was giving her an aura that was striking to watch.
"I missed you." She launched her arms around his neck.
"How many of those did you have?" He circled his arms around her waist.
She giggled. "A few."
"What's with the sudden nature-calling?"
She shrugged. "I just wanted to dance, and we were already here, so we just added the beer and chose the right music."
"Why were you in the woods, in the first place?" He was instantly suspicious.
She laughed it off, and pulled away from his arms, dancing seductively with a slow motion of her body that accompanied the music.
"Did you spend the day with Bonnie?" He insisted.
Rebekah finished her beer and without thinking, flashed an enormous smile. "Do you want to see something vibrant?" She looked at the bottle, igniting a flame inside of it.
Damon looked at Bonnie seriously, the witch wasn't kissing Kol now and looked down on the ground with a guilty expression on her face.
"What does this mean, Nik?" Caroline asked him, wishing that they were alone.
"It means that Niklaus has been hiding a secret weapon that could kill his siblings, the sword can't harm him because of his wolf side, it would only turn him into a powerful werewolf while his vampire side would be latent. He has killed everyone who ever knew or heard about the sword and its location, and he has done it all for a family that didn't even want him." Ansel explained.
"I will never tell you that location." Klaus said unwavering.
"Persuasion runs in our blood, Niklaus." Ansel looked straight at Caroline.
Instantly, two men took charge of the attack and aimed at her, with a whoosh Klaus snapped the neck of one, while Elijah easily ended the other one.
Ansel clasped his hands. "Your loyalty towards this vampire is truly impressive, but I do wonder if you have ever given thought to the true potential of this weapon..." There was a sadist smile on his hard features. "If we kill the vampire virus in you, something that you were never meant to be..." His eyes sparkled. "If you become a werewolf wholeheartedly, you can actually have your own offspring."
Caroline's world stopped in that very second, it was an unspoken issue between them because they knew that it was the one thing that they couldn't give each other, and slowly she looked at Klaus, but his expression was cold and stern.
"You can choose any woman to your liking, human or werewolf, and produce a family of your own. We can even aim at royalty and find you a beautiful young fertile princess to establish ourselves in the most powerful circles. The Luna has many influential supporters, and we can find you a good mate."
She felt her mouth dry, how often he told her that she was his mate and now she was faced with a reality that put her to shame.
She wasn't a werewolf by nature and there was a chance, after all, for Klaus to have children with someone else but her.
Slowly, Klaus smiled at Ansel. "I had to raise both Kol and Rebekah, dealing with those two for over a thousand years is all the parenthood experience that one can handle in a lifetime, and I've told you this before, old man, Caroline is all the family I want for eternity, and I will happily kill anyone who dares to question that."
"It's impossible to protect everyone." Ansel mused.
Klaus's phone started to buzz.
"I suggest that you check your phone." Ansel suggested. "It could be something vital."
Klaus reached for his phone and clicked on the received message, it was a picture of Rebekah and Bonnie dancing.
"Have I ever told you about Eric?" Ansel easily asked. "I found him one night after a hunt in the Scandinavian Forest, he was badly wounded from a gunshot and if I hadn't taken him in, he would've died. Out of gratitude, he offered me his services for life, and I adopted him as a son. His specialty is armed combat, and he trains the best snipers in the world."
Klaus showed Caroline the message.
"Unless it's a supernatural death, the Immortality ring on Rebekah's hand will not work." Ansel pushed with his threat.
Klaus looked at Elijah, his brother was silent, but they didn't need words between them, with a single motion they beheaded the two men guarding Ansel and neared him with crossbows aimed at his heart.
Ansel waved his phone. "Eric is on his way to Mystic Falls and he will call me every hour until he arrives. If my voice isn't soothing enough, he will hunt after everyone who visited your house... I believe that Caroline's mother has visited you, once or twice..."
Caroline closed her eyes in panic.
"If he is as good as the ones that we just killed…" Elijah hissed.
Ansel smiled.
The line of men by the door all moved at the same time and circled Caroline, she started fighting them and Elijah joined her side for a fair battle.
Klaus leveled the fight by taking out most of the menace but while he was chewing off someone's jugular there was a jarring sound of a gun being shot and everyone froze.
Caroline's whimper was the first sign that something was wrong, she caved to her knees pressing her stomach and while Elijah rushed to check her wound, Klaus turned to Ansel with yellow eyes and a growl, he was certain to smell werewolf venom.
"I've recharged it properly." Ansel held the smoking gun while another big wave of men filled the room. "We can dance to this beat all night, but your wife is in pain."
"I can take it." Caroline said, through clenched teeth.
Ansel was at least taken by her fiber. "There is a reason why our bite kills your kind and not the other way around, dear."
"Don't listen to him, Nik." She asked him softly, she didn't want him near this man, between two psychotic parents he did not need a third one.
"The sword is in Italy." Klaus said without taking his eyes away from her, they even cleared into that striking blue full of love.
Ansel's phone started ringing and with a grin, he unlocked the call. "Eric? Call me in one hour. We're on our way to Italy." He ended the call with a harsh look at Klaus. "That allowed you an hour for good faith. Now, tell me the exact location."
"I'll show it to you."
"You're going with me?" Ansel was suddenly surprised.
"The sword is locked inside of a tomb, protected by a spell that can only be undone with my blood." Klaus told him.
Ansel considered his words. "Even if you are making this up, having your company is a benefit." He assured him.
Klaus barely reacted. "I need a moment with Caroline."
"Make it quick." Ansel threw a glass at him.
Caroline stood up with Elijah's help and she started shaking her head, as Klaus filled the glass with his blood. "Don't go… please… don't go with him." She pleaded in a low voice.
"Everything will be alright, sweetheart." He gave Elijah the glass, so that he could focus only on his goodbye.
"We'll find another way. You don't have to do this." She tried to grip him hard with her free hand, the other was still pressing her bleeding stomach. "Do this for me, Nik. Stay here with us."
He smiled sadly at her. "I need to go, Caroline." Gently, Klaus kissed her lips, it was a sweet but powerful kiss, like his love for her. "It's time that I go practice on my rusty Indiana Jones."
For the briefest second there was a tiny reaction crossing her face and before she said a word, he kissed her again.
"I love you." She said, trying to hold on to his hand.
He squeezed it before looking at Elijah.
"Be careful." Elijah said.
It was all the comfort that he needed, and he nodded with a final glance at Caroline.
As he walked away with Ansel, Caroline cleaned her silent tears.
Elijah took his jacket off and covered her bare shoulders with it. "We need to leave." He handed her the glass with blood.
"Have you finally lost your mind?" Damon confronted Bonnie, enraged.
"Not really, Damon." She dryly replied.
"It looks like it, to me." He huffed.
"What did you do, Bonnie?" Kol asked her as well.
She sighed and looked at the girl dancing by the car.
"She asked me to help her with her magic and I only taught her a few simple tricks with fire."
Damon made a vicious sound, while throwing his hands in the air.
"You shouldn't have done that." Kol was upset and left to be with his sister.
"Kol…" Bonnie called him without effect.
He didn't stop until he was close to Rebekah.
"It didn't cross your mind that we were actually making an effort to keep her away from any spells?"
"No…" She admitted.
"Rebekah wasn't supposed to be human in the first place. She is one by magic and she shouldn't be using it like you did. Klaus did his research and there is a reason why she hasn't done any major spells since that one that saved you and Kol."
"What are you saying, that she's weak? She's an Original witch." Bonnie was confused.
"She comes from one but she is not one." Damon came within inches from Bonnie's face. "Stop teaching her or I will teach you how to stand down."
"You're scared that magic will kill her." She connected the dots.
"While you were out there finding yourself and resurrecting guys in suits, we were here trying to figure out a way to keep Rebekah away from magic. Witches don't have a big timespan in this town."
"You can't stop a witch from doing magic." She knew that by experience.
"If anything happens to Rebekah… I swear, Bonnie..."
Bonnie gulped down, she never saw Damon like this, he was really worried about Rebekah.
Damon didn't allow her to gloat over a rare sighting of his vulnerable side and walked away with a final glare at her.
Elijah was driving for a few minutes when Caroline spoke up.
"He tried to tell me something, Elijah."
"What do you mean?" He looked away from the road.
"When he made that comment about Indiana Jones… it reminded me of the time when we were looking for a copy of the Grimoire…"
"You reckon that there's a connection?" Elijah inquired hopefully.
"At the time he teased me with the right location, and I expected it to be inside of a really old coffin but after I got it wrong, he made me try it again…" She faced Elijah. "I told him that my Indiana Jones was a little rusty…"
Elijah nodded. "He was trying to tell us that he's taking Ansel to the obvious place, while he has the sword hidden in another one completely."
She felt the same way. "He is buying us time."
"We need to locate that sword first." Elijah looked ahead, conjuring an emergency plan. "Kol needs to join us tomorrow."
"No, Elijah!" She begged him.
It took him by surprise. "I can't leave you here alone, I need to go to Italy at once and find someone who has heard about this weapon. It's obvious that Niklaus didn't succeed in killing everyone that knew about it, because Ansel knows about it."
Caroline was determined. "Kol needs to stay in Mystic Falls and to watch over Rebekah and Bonnie… and after my mother."
"Very well…" He slowly nodded, it wasn't the first time that he worked alone, and Caroline should be safe when she returned to Mystic Falls.
"I'm going to Italy, Elijah."
He looked at her. "I can't pursue a secret weapon and still focus enough to protect you."
"Then teach me how to fight and how to defend myself."
"Caroline… we are going to be in touch with a past that Niklaus and all of us have been careful enough to avoid addressing around you. If I take you with me, we will be exposing a side that I know he hates about himself."
"I know."
"I will not rest until I kill Ansel and bring Niklaus back to us."
Caroline smiled. "Then let's go to Italy together and find that damn sword."
