Chapter 4: Myra hates fake fortune tellers
Myra unraveled the white bandaged wrap gingerly so it didn't aggravate her hand if it was still injured and raw, to her dismay there was a thin pink mark across the palm of her hand which no doubt would not heal properly anytime soon. Sadly that was to be expected when touching evil artifacts, but knowing that her friend had some respite from the item made it worth it. If she was ever going to get a mark from the item, then she would wear it with pride. It was proof that she would gladly endure pain for those closest to her and she would do it all over again if the opportunity presented itself.
Lily clicked her tongue in displeasure from seeing the mark before sighing heavily while her hands were on her hips.
"No doubt it would be pointless to say that I hope you learn your lesson, after all you're now going to be scarred for life" Lily said dryly before Myra clenched and unclenched her injured hand to see if the pain was still there, it was there for sure but it only ebbed slightly so she looked at Lily.
"Hey I can still write and use sign language" Myra signed with her hands causing the woman to roll her eyes.
"Yeah yeah… just go into the living room and DON'T aggravate the hand, am I clear?" she asked sternly while Myra left the room. The woman shook her head while muttering things under her breath.
"She is stubborn, that's for sure" Her ferret commented with an eerie look on his face.
"Yes, but I do wish she would take things seriously and put herself first for once. That was dangerous and she could have died or worse"
"But isn't being selfless one of her charms?" the ferret smirked causing her to whine slightly as she placed a hand to her face. "Worry not, everything will be ok-ay…" he paused as he saw on the news that a fire had broken out in an apartment and someone had told a victim that this would happen on the exact time and date. Myra meanwhile was frowning at what she was seeing, something told her that this was no ordinary fire accident and just thinking that left her frowning even more.
"Foul play" she wrote onto the notepad with a dark look shocking Lily.
"How can you be sure?" Lily asked while Soloman was holding a cup of tea.
"There was no problems with the wiring, it's odd that someone would say that this would happen and then when the day of the when it's predicted- a fire breaks out" she commented before looking at the TV, as expected a fireman had reported of no faulty wiring and it could have been foul play but there were no suspects.
"Who would do such a thing?" Yugi asked now looking worried.
"Someone who wants attention" she wrote before stroking the back of Essy's neck lightly.
"Well, it's getting late you two. Bed time now" Lily clapped her hands twice causing Myra to get up from the couch and went to get ready for bed, Yugi also retreated to his room after bidding his grandfather and mother goodnight.
As he laid in bed, his mind went to the incident and Myra's response.
"It's odd indeed" Yugi slowly closed his eyes and went sleep, as he slept he soon began to toss and turn weakly from a dream that entered his mind. In the dream he saw Myra staring at someone with contempt shocking Yugi a lot since she was never like this with anyone, not even Joey when he made her upset numerous times.
"Haha! So a mute huh? Then again this is to be expected from a pathetic brat, not that anyone would believe you over me" the faceless person who was covered in shadows sneered at her expression. However the person took a step back when she threw a piece of paper on the floor that had a symbol right in the middle for them to see, another piece of paper that had the word 'Fraudster' glaring at her the person was about to take a swing before Yugi snapped out of his daze and ran to block the attack.
"STOOOOP!" Yugi shot up from his sleep and panted heavily, looking round he noticed that he was in his room and not in the weird building. Yugi then groaned as he placed a hand to his face only to feel sweat on his face, what kind of dream was that? It felt so real to his dismay, but Myra-was she okay?
Getting up quietly, Yugi tiptoed out his room and went towards Myra's room. Looking both ways he slowly opened the door to see a dark room as expected since it was well past midnight, gulping he entered quietly and spotted to his relief Myra's sleeping form. She was okay… well as okay as she should be given the new mark on her hand. As worried as he was for Bakura, his mind still went to how Myra was willing to get injured for her friend. It should leave him happy to know that she was loyal and yet he felt the odd feeling well up inside him, was it resentment? He didn't know but he was going to protect her as best as he could. Slowly closing the door to her room he went back to his and tried to get whatever sleep he could get.
"Did you hear about that fire?" a student asked in alarm as Myra was getting her shoes sorted.
"Yeah, it's said that a guy named Kokurano predicted it" hearing this made Myra pause before she gritted her teeth in anger, to think that she would hear such a name after the last time she saw him. Last time she had humiliated him by calling out his lies in a different town and as a result almost got attacked by him in retaliation. Not that she would complain, he wouldn't have gotten far with his intentions without her guardian standing close by. She would have snapped Kokurano's arm like a twig if he had tried. Shaking her head Myra walked away to class only to glare at the person she never wanted to meet again- Kokurano. A short man with purple hair and wore a green cloak, he had a pinkish purple star on his head while wearing beads around his neck as he wore black underneath. Why he chose that style was beyond her but right now all she could do was not wring his neck, after all if he had caused that fire then she would no doubt hesitate to attack him in private about it.
"What is it Master Kokurano?" a student asked as she watched Kokurano and Myra stare at the other for a while, one face showed confusion while the other showed loathing. Something that would startle anyone who was watching.
"Well well… I never expected you to be here, and yet I did" he said as he reached for something inside his cloak only to feel pain as Myra slapped his hand harshly shocking the people.
"Do you think I don't see through your lies? Then you're a bigger idiot than I thought! Why are you still making these 'predictions' when I know you're a fake" she wrote darkly causing his eyebrows to go wide.
"My my, resorting to using a notepad and pen?" he asked in a calm voice as his hand throbbed from the pain "it matters not, after all I did predict that man's fate with his apartment"
"If you had anything to do with this" Kokurano moved his hand on hers stopping her from writing, her eyes warning him to try anything funny but he did not.
"Why young lady, why would I waste my time causing such atrocities?" he said with an amused look as her eyes narrowed.
"Just you wait, if I find out that you're going to hurt another person I will make you suffer" she showed him before pausing as something came to mind, just then she smirked as she raised her head to look at him, this took him by surprise.
"Actually, I might not have to after all" his eyes went wide from the insult as she walked past him with the words "Good day for it shall be your last… even if it happens to be tomorrow" on the last bit of the note.
"That-That brat will pay for this mockery" he screeched mentally as he tried not to crumple the note in anger.
"Master Kokurano? Are you okay?" asked an assistant.
"Ah…yes, yes I am. Now where was I going to go? Oh yes" he then went into Myra's class without them both knowing that it was hers.
Myra as she listened to Miho's comments about marrying a prince, the quiet girl rolled her eyes.
"Miho… seriously? You can't know that for sure, if anything only an oracle or one who has the sight can predict the future. Fortune tellers are frauds, especially when they demand money" Myra commented as she showed them the paper, Miho pouted before whining causing a surprised Bakura to look at them. Seeing him Myra waved with a weak smile before Miho turned to look at who the mute girl was waving at, just then Miho's cheeks went pink which didn't go unnoticed by Myra who raised a brow.
"Now I don't need to be a matchmaker or a fortune teller to know who Miho is going to be tied to" she wrote to herself before mentally smirking. Oh dear… poor Bakura, she sure hoped that Miho didn't drop him because he wasn't rich. If anything he was lucky to inherit anything from his parents given how his step mum ruined things.
"Miho?" Tristan asked snapping Miho out of her daze. "Are you okay?"
"A-Ah yes, Miho was out of it for a minute" Miho giggled until she saw Myra's amused look. "Wh-why are you looking at me like that?" she asked shakily, she watched Myra slowly go back to her notepad and began writing. Her smile never left her face.
"Oh nothing :)" Myra said only Miho felt an odd feeling from seeing the smiley face on the message. Tèa blinked as she saw Myra's comment while Yugi blinked, what was with Myra? And why was she acting like that?
"You sure?" Tèa asked as she stood beside Myra.
"Oh I am fiiiine, what about you guys?" she asked with a sly smile that left them uneasy. What was she up to?"
"Hey guys, what's going on?" Bakura asked as he approached them.
"Oh hey Bakura, we were just talking about what our futures could be like" Yugi said with a smile.
"Yeah, I'm going to be marrying the girl of my dreams" Tristan said with a wide smile. Bakura blinked in surprise.
"And my future is to be a policeman in Loz Angeles" Joey said with a smile.
"Did Myra tell you that?" This took them by surprise.
"No, Kokurano did" Tristan replied with confused look.
"Yeah, it was after that earthquake which took place an hour ago" Joey added, it was then that Bakura remembered being on the ground floor by the tables that had been nailed down so they wouldn't get moved. Looking at Myra he flashed her a brief grateful smile which she replied with a roll of her eyes as she smiled.
"Besides I doubt Myra could see into the future" this time Bakura blinked.
"Really?" Bakura then looked at Myra who rolled her eyes with a smile before waving it off.
"Yeah, she's so puny and too quiet to even predict-hmm?" Joey then saw Myra's note.
"Watch out for the book" was all it said as she frowned at him darkly.
"A book?" he said blandly before shaking his head "That's just silly-OW! HEY!" Joey cried out as he felt something heavy hit the back of his head, looking down he saw a book.
"Who threw that?!" he snapped at his classmates who stared at him.
"S-Sorry, my friend was trying to hand me his book" said a tall student who smiled weakly causing Joey to grumble and shake his head.
"Ever heard of getting up and passing it?" Joey asked darkly causing Myra to shake her head at his remark. After all he would throw things himself.
"S-Sorry" the friend said shakily before they resumed their conversation the moment the tall student took the book back.
"Yeesh" Joey muttered.
"That was a good eye Myra" Miho said while staring at Myra with and intrigued look.
"Yeah, I didn't even see the book being thrown" Tèa commented as she looked at the students and then at Myra who shrugged, Yugi as he watched her was surprised if not amazed from what had happened. Even though seeing into the future was impossible, given what his mother could do on the other hand did defy logic so maybe Myra did have a few tricks up her sleeve.
"It was almost as if you saw it coming" Tristan added while Bakura and Myra looked at one another.
"It's called observing, have you heard of the butterfly effect?" Tristan blinked.
"No why?" Tristan asked as he sat on the table.
"What's that got to do with the book?" Joey asked now looking more confused than ever.
"Well the butterfly effect actually is when a single change can make an impact that could effect the world around you. So for example when that student threw the book his friend who was sitting close to you, his aim could have been off and because he didn't say anything. Nor were you looking you didn't have time to dodge it as a result" Bakura explained simply.
"Oh I get it, so because Myra spotted it quickly she was able to see that Joey was going to get hit even after warning him since he didn't look for the incoming book" Tristan said as he looked at Myra who shrugged again.
"That or it was inevitable" Myra commented.
"I highly doubt it, after all it could be a coincidence right?" Joey asked while Yugi was left confused as he tried to answer the question.
"There is no such things as coincidences, only inevitability and I learned that" Myra smiled as she looked at Bakura "They say when you meet someone, your fates could get tied even if it's for one simple event" she added.
"Ah but what if someone who saves you shows up?" Tèa asked without thinking, this caused them to look at her.
"Could be a stalker, or someone who knows that you were in danger because you chose to put yourself in that situation. I wouldn't trust Kokurano if I were you, he's bad news and he's a disgrace to the word fortune teller. Anyone who can predict would be embarrassed to even know or look at his face" Myra said with distain, Yugi blinked in surprise.
"Why is that?" Yugi asked.
"Well, the last time he got rude to someone his face changed to how you see it now. Pudgy and ugly" Myra wrote as she pursed her lips. This made their eyes go wide.
"What did he do?" Miho cried in alarm.
"He made a rude comment to that person because they had the sight and he is still the same cocky, arrogant, rude and pathetic. You'd think after 4 years he'd have learned his lesson… sadly nope"
'Wow, I've never seen Myra so bitter before. This guy must be bad if she dislikes him' Yugi thought as he read her words.
Myra after hearing about Joey's incident frowned angrily, oh she knew who did that and he wasn't getting away with it!
Just as she was about to give Kokurano a piece of her mind she had heard him making strangled cries, this left her wanting to roll her eyes at how he was pulling the wool over the next sap's eyes.
"He's really milking it with all he's got, he could be a good actor if he wanted to be" she then rubbed it out with a rubber since she needed some space on her pad.
"The man watching over you from the shadows will show himself before you" Kokurano said, hearing this made her blink before rolling her eyes as she wondered who the poor fool was that was being suckered into this web of lies.
"Really?" asked a voice that left Myra's jaw dropping in surprise.
"Oh come on REALLY?! TÈA?!" Myra wrote down with a weary look on her face.
"At six wait in the science lab, there will you put yourself in his hands" Kokurano said calmly, only Myra picked up a part of his emotions that left her wanting to growl in anger.
"You're kidding?! YOU SICK!" shaking her head she continued to listen before hearing Yugi trying to call Kokurano out, however just as she was about to enter the room she froze as an image came to mind. The room was dark but she could see the silhouette of a male who was holding Tèa, only this person looked like Yugi to her surprise. Did that mean…Yugi would help keep Tèa safe from that guy?
"Countless words will fall from heaven!" Kokurano said loudly snapping Myra out of her daze. What the? "I'd be careful if I were you" Kokurano had added with a dark chuckle that left Myra glaring. She didn't have to be that smart to know he was threatening Yugi given his tone. Whatever Yugi had said must have really struck a nerve and knowing that Kokurano would do anything to get even left her on edge, sadly Tèa would be no help since she was without a doubt sucked into the fake prediction.
Biting her lip Myra left the area for a little walk in order to clear her head. What could she do? It's not like anyone would believe a mute over a fraud, but then again if he had nothing to hide then why have a cloak on? She did see him take out a prediction from his cloak so maybe, just maybe that's where all his predictions were located. It could just prove his dishonesty but it was worth a try.
Stopping she spotted Yugi grabbing a book and twigged-Library!
She ran towards Yugi quickly and patted his shoulder startling him out of his daze.
"Oh Myra…" he paused as she showed him a note.
"Let me take the book, go after Tèa since I have no doubt that he's lying. Don't trust him" Myra's eyes shone with such seriousness that it left Yugi startled once more before nodding, his eyes now showing determination.
"Right, thank you Myra" he smiled before handing her the book before taking off to find Tèa. Now alone Myra sighed mutely before looking at the book with a frown. If she was right…
Myra entered the library to see no one, so far so good. She kept on guard as she looked round still in case he showed up. He wasn't going to catch her off guard like he did the others, nope she knew better thanks to her caretaker.
She then spotted the section in where the book should be stored and traveled towards it. Part of her did wonder why she didn't come here enough, after all she loved books and always wanted to read but never found the time or had to leave the books she had behind for various reasons. Not that she was happy about it but who was she to complain, after all traveling light meant not having to worry about forgetting anything.
Myra soon slotted the book in and stared at the shelf with confusion, why in the middle of the room?
Myra's ears then caught the sound of creaking and groaning which definitely came from a few bookshelves located behind her, she then turned to look at the shelf to see it was still intact before blanking out.
The bookshelf crashed into a barrier causing it to topple on its side as a vicious wind surrounded the barrier causing some books to fly all over the place while the bookshelves were either sent on their sides or were lying on the floor. Myra's eyes during that time were sapphire blue before changing back to brown. Her form was now a bit taller than before and her hair was in a long braid that rested on her right shoulder.
"So that's it? Stupid mortal" Myra muttered as she shook her head. "I knew he was up to no good" she commented darkly before glaring at the mess, and such interesting books.
"I know books are paper but this is just rude, after all who's going to repair the broken bookshelves?" she added before spotting him running away. "Coward…" she spat darkly before pushing her hair from her shoulders so it rested on her back.
"And now he's going to find Tèa, I sure hope HE is with her" she commented before walking out the library. Her school shoes tapped on the floor as she walked while her brown jacket flapped from the light breeze. Something told her that HE was no doubt taking care of the mess as she predicted.
"Hmm, right on cue and I didn't have to get my hands dirty after all" she said with a wide smile as she saw a taller version of Yugi near the fallen Kokurano, she then spotted Tèa sleeping and rolled her eyes as she knelt by the fallen girl.
"Chloroform, she'll be fine" Myra said bluntly as she stood up and looked at the confused male.
"You know what happened?" Yugi asked as he observed her, Myra shrugged with a smirk.
"If I say no would you believe me either ways?" she said with a twinkle in her eyes.
"How are you even talking? I thought you were a mute" Yugi asked as he was still in shock that she was even talking, Myra giggled before moving closer so they were inches from the other.
"There's a lot about me you don't know, or…maybe you did but forgot?" she asked in an innocent tone.
"I don't know what you're talking about" he said as he watched her pout slightly, why did her reaction leave him unsettled?
"Well that's not very nice and here I was going to give you a reward for helping" she said before sighing. "Nice knowing you" she turned to wave.
"H-Hey wait-" Yugi paused as she not only turned round but pecked him, she then looked at him with half lidded eyes.
"There, happy now?" she giggled "Now pick up the poor girl over there, she needs to go home and no doubt we're late enough as it is" she commented as she gestured to Tèa, Yugi however felt his face grow hot from the peck but said nothing. Seeing this made her smirk.
"Still the shy boy, now get going" she laughed as she play slapped his back causing him to go 'oof' from the sudden move.
Not trusting his voice he picked Tèa up and followed Myra out as she stood by the door.
"What about him?" Yugi asked with distain, Myra shrugged.
"I already alerted the police about him and his chloroform addiction, he'll be dealt with soon enough" Myra replied bluntly as they walked through the hallway. As they walked Myra sensed that Tèa was now waking up but barely due to the drug but kept quiet knowing that the sleeping girl would not take well to two people who looked exactly like people she knew, she then spotted that Tèa was slowly going back to sleep and smiled softly knowing that things were now somewhat back to normal.
"Did you put bells in your hair?" Yugi asked surprising Myra as she then looked at her fringe, she then smiled at the ceremonial bells that were attached to both ends of her fringes.
"Nope, but I like them" she smiled as she reminisced seeing such things.
"So the guy was a fake?" Joey whined as they walked to school the next day.
"Told ya, only Oracles and those who have the sight can see in to the future. But the future is subjective" Myra explained as they looked at the pad.
"How so?" Joey asked.
"Well even if someone tells you your future, it is only a possibility out of so many after all that guy did tell Yugi words would fall from heaven but didn't. It could have happened if Yugi did show up at the library which would have meant he could have gotten crushed by the bookshelves" Myra explained.
"That doesn't explain why the library had to be shut down, no one even told us why though" Joey commented with a frown.
"Because the bookshelves were damaged, it looked like a tornado hit the place" Tea commented catching Tristan's attention even though he was in a dismal mood.
"Really?" Miho cried in surprise.
"Yup, Myra didn't you head there yesterday?" Yugi asked looking confused, Myra nodded in reply as she looked at him.
"Saw nothing" was all she wrote causing them to frown.
"Well whatever caused it-"
"It could be the fraudster to gain more publicity" Myra suggested.
"Could be" Joey shrugged "Well no use thinking about it now, it'll probably remain a mystery"
"Guess so" Bakura smiled before noticing a bell latched onto the side of Myra's ponytail. "Hey Myra where did you get that bell?" he asked with an interested smile, Tèa as she was talking spotted the bell only as her stomach dropped as it looked like the bell she saw last night.
"Dunno, but I like it though. I think it's a ceremonial bell" she replied with a shrug.
"Don't spirit mediums or sages use those?" Bakura asked with a confused look only to be greeted with a shrug.
"Maybe" was all Myra said before walking ahead with her friend leaving Yugi with Tèa.
"Are you okay Tèa?" Yugi asked snapping his friend out of her daze.
"What? Oh sorry Yugi, I just had a feeling I saw those bells before" Tèa said with a slight smile.
"Really?" he asked before his eyes went to the bell as it released a gentle chime, it did look pretty. "It looks pretty right?" he asked causing Tèa to blink.
"Yeah… it does" she said before going quiet.
"But…why does she have a bell like that?" Tèa said while her mind was bombarded with questions.
