Post T.A.A.H
Siegfried had asked out of curiosity. He had seen the way Marth had been parading the Mansion in distress after he had gotten away from a serious conversation with his fiancé. He tiredly told Link he had liked her once, but she had probably never been the one who would always be able to set his heart on fire. The prince went on to say it was affectionate attraction that had gone on too long, shadowed in a pretense of love and promise. Link said he understood the situation and that the other should not worry too much about it right then. He could fix matters when he felt better.
That made the knight's mind wander. Had he ever committed himself to anyone besides him? Had Link ever even been in a relationship before? Siegfried knew he was a first in Link's life, and a very important first at that, but was he the first? Was he the first person Link had even found himself attracted to?
When he brought it to the elf's attention, Link had only smiled sadly in response. He said that people like him did not get to feel anything remotely close to love towards anyone else. Not when there were people like Zelda, who were able to do away with whoever the object of his affection may be. Not when there were other beings in life, with more power than he was capable of having, who were there to give her the support she needed. Not when his destiny was no longer his own.
Link said he supposed he had felt a small inkling of interest towards a few people in his past lives. However, those people were quick to disappear. Whether banished, imprisoned, or killed, he did not know, and Zelda would feign ignorance when he asked. They were sure never to appear before him again. No matter what he did, the result was always the same. After a while Link learned to forcefully dissuade has heart from seeking out anything more than obvious friendship from anybody.
He had done well in continually doing so, never seeking out more than a superficial friendship, up until he entered Siegfried's world. The he had fallen hard without meaning too, and had not been able to stop the intense emotions vying desperately for the knight's attention. Not even death and rebirth had dulled the feelings he felt towards the German. If anything, they had gotten much stronger than Link could have ever anticipated. Zelda had noticed instantly. Now that the knight was in her reach, and he reciprocated the Hylian's feelings, she was out for his blood.
Rather than take that revelation as a threat, Siegfried merely took it as a challenge. Honestly, what did he have to be afraid of? The princess knowing the extent to their relationship? The Mansion discovering it? His family's reaction? Everybody already knew how the two felt for each other. Those who accepted and those who scorned it had been duly noted already. As far as the knight was concerned there was only one thing left to do. Show that he meant business.
The knight kissed Link, hugged him, and held him a little longer than necessary whenever the princess was around. He spoke to the Hylian with affection, and was always attentive to what the other wanted. Never once did he fail to show his complete adoration for the elf, and Link did absolutely nothing to deter his behavior.
The knight was clearly sending a message, and Link rather liked what was being said.
Whoever Zelda had chased away from Link in the past was nowhere near as determined and infatuated with the boy as the knight was right now. Siegfried was there to stay.
He may or may not have been the first, but he was certainly going to be the last.
Pre T.A.A.H
Siegfried was a knight. He was a man of honor, a man of morals, and a man of the law. He had lived his life in accordance to a code dictated by rules and regulations that were meant to keep people safe. He had done so since he was young, as his father had done before him, and as his grandfather had done before him. Family tended to agree. The law was almost always absolute.
He knew that no one was above it. Those at the top had to adhere to it as well, even if it was often modified to fit the higher part of the food chain. Eventually those that broke it would be followed relentlessly and persecuted to the highest extent. Again, even those highest on the social ladder soon found themselves being punished for breaking the rules. Whether by official law or a vigilantly equivalent was another story entirely.
There was no point in running. You could only run so far after all. Eventually you got too tired to move and collapsed.
There was no point in ignoring the system. As mentioned before, some form of punishment would always follow you.
And there was no point in lying to authority figures. If they were any good you would be caught within seconds. If you lied, were believed, and were discovered later, the consequences would be far worse than if you had confessed to whatever crime they had accused of.
He knew all of this.
That did absolutely nothing to stop him from openly lying to a group of guards who accused Link of a crime the Hylian did not commit. It also did nothing to stop him from beating up every single guard when they refused to believe him, and high tailing it out of town the moment they were all down.
The law was an important aspect of his world, yes, but not as important as Link was.
Fang: I have to say, that last one had me chuckling a bit.
MistressOfTime: He speaks in compliments! Good God!
Fang: Oh come on, I always compliment you.
MistressOfTime: It would help if I knew you were doing so and not just insulting me.
Fang: That's just the way we work Valor.
MistressOfTime: I suppose so. Please R&R guys. You always manage to make me smile.
