The Tomb of the Doctor

Chapter 9

Clara opened her eyes. She kept falling no more, and no longer felt split in a million pieces, no longer in the unknown. She was now in the TARDIS, in a large bed in one of the many rooms. The Doctor was not around. She was not surprised. He could never stay in one place for long. She sat up and studied the room. She had not been in it before. It was in medieval style with rusty armors and swords, and some ugly oil pictures of knights or kings. She tried to remember some of her experience but found she could not. It was the trauma of it all at least she hoped so.

There was one thing though - proof the Doctor had been there. It was a porcelain cup that probably had tea in it. Clara picked it up and sniffed. She was right it was tea - mint but with a strange hue, definitely a herb of some kind. She was to put the cup back at its place but noticed a piece of paper. She put the cup beside it and picked up the little piece of paper.

'Clara

Went to pool and return to Moon soon.

Doctor'

Clara blinked then smiled while shaking head. What a poet? - She thought. Of course, she hoped he did not ditch her on the Moon. Nah, he would never...or would he. She hoped not otherwise he would get some unwanted bruises.

Clara stood up and looked at herself. She was still with her clothes. Shaking head, she doubted the Doctor would dare put her in different clothes. Still sleeping with her old clothes was probably not the best of ideas. Anyway, she left the room and went to explore.

Strangely enough, moonlight did shine all around her. It was not Earth's moon but it was a moon. Clara wondered whether the room was on the moon or if the moon was inside the TARDIS. She could never tell with all the strange things she has seen and she has seen an entire sun with a black hole inside the TARDIS so she would not be that surprised to find a moon in it too.

She remembered also the Doctor's note where he said he would go to the pool. She can't remember seeing him swim though she knew he did on several occasions. Still the question remained what was he doing at the pool. She doubted he would tell her the truth. He was prompt to lie. He was very good at it even when she could tell when he did.

She turned around to look at the entrance to her room only to find the room's door had disappeared. She was in the middle of a moon plain that was flat and reached the far end of the horizon. If it was an illusion it was a damn good one. Or it was possible the door was simply a doorway to the moon though why would someone build a door way going to the middle of nowhere was beyond her.

"Clara!" The voice was nothing more than a whisper and seemed to emanate from every pebble around her.

"Doctor?" She replied hoping for answer.

"Clara!" The whisper voice continued.

Clara sought also the source of the light as it was moonlight. And there in the heavens above her there was a moon. So she was on a moon that had a moon. The next pressing question was - breathing. Moons did not usually have an atmosphere.

The whisper voice continued calling her name, which gave her the creeps. Well to a point anyway. She had got the habit of odd and strange things happening around her. And speaking of strange she hoped her eyes deceived her now as there was a motorcycle parked just a few hundred meters away from her. It was similar to the one she rode back home.

She hesitated though. Going somewhere, well riding off is a great idea but will she be able to find her way back to here, wherever that is, and return to the room. There was some risk involved but as always the risk was worth it or at least usually.

She reached for the cycle, put the helmet on and touched the igniter. The engines powered up and bluish light illuminated the area around her. Odd engines, Clara thought but cool light. The engines' purring was softer than her bike and much more enjoyable. She punched it and had to hold tight as the cycle propelled forward with wild speed. Clara shouted in ecstatic joy.

On the bridge of the organic ship called Moya, Vala waited patiently for Crichton to come to her. Ka D'Argo, his companion, as she learnt from the clumsily written database, was a Luxan warrior with great pride and unchecked anger issues that apparently was hereditary for his whole race. Of course, a race of naturally pissed off warriors could be of great use.

Vala thought how they resembled the Jaffa. And then it hit her. Could this be the missing link – the similarities in each universe? There were many differences but also many similarities between the two universes.

Vala had the chance to read up on her counterpart. She was Sebacean and in almost every other aspect a human. Having to grow up on a military vessel and trained from childhood in military fashion, her counterpart was a weapon designed allegedly for peacemaking. She had apparently her charming personality when she first met Daniel aboard the Prometheus though better in the use of weapons and ships.

Vala smiled; still they had similar tastes in men. Vala though would never turn her affections towards Cameron but she understood her counterpart's attraction. To Vala though, Daniel was far more attractive choice. Anyway, she lifted her head as she heard the bridge's door open and Cameron's counterpart – Crichton barge in.

"Aeryn?" Crichton raised an eyebrow.

Vala reasoned it was not the usual way these two met. She did notice the fire in his gaze the last she came onboard. There was tension between these two but also great affection, which was obvious.

"Ah, Commander," Vala said and jumped to her feet. "I have a problem that needs solving and I would have to pick your brains for that."

Crichton blinked. It was not the first time he came across Aeryn's odd behavior. But it was in the voice when one can tell when something is wrong or obviously so. And now Crichton sensed the voice and it was definitely not Aeryn's. It was freer and much more casual. There was a notion of sarcasm and a dose of mockery, two qualities so unlike Aeryn.

"Your logs picked up a radiation surge associated with parallel universe displacement or jump. And while I may know that, my knowledge is limited. Your brain, however, commander is full of science-y stuff and apparently some wormhole knowledge that can be of some use to me."

"Some wormhole knowledge?" Ka D'Argo, the loyal Luxan repeated blinking hard. Aeryn Sun would know Crichton's head is full of everything wormhole or at least almost everything.

"Nobody is perfect, muscle boy."

Crichton was now a hundred percent positive that was not Aeryn. She was incapable of speaking in this fashion. Though dressed like her, she was most certainly not her. No, this woman reminded him more of Chiana. Hot damn, in the reality Einstein showed him she was Chiana.

"Con artist?" John Crichton finally spoke starring at her.

Vala was indeed surprised how fast this man assessed her but he knew her counterpart better and besides Vala was not even trying to emulate her.

"Once, long ago,"

Crichton sensed it was a touchy subject so he did not press on. "What can I help with?"

"Well, it is rather complicated and I do not fully understand it but…"

"Shoot, I'll see what I can do to help out."

"Alright, here it is goes…"

The Olympian sized pool streamed with hot, boiling water thus all surroundings were misty and foggy. Clara made her way around the borders cautiously.

"Doctor! Doctor!" She called but there was no answer. "Where is he gone to now?"

The whisper voice led her here but there was no trace of the mysterious time lord, her friend whom she saved when she jumped into his grave so to speak.

"Doctor, where are you?"

"Clara…" The whisper returned with fading tones on the rising up vapors.

"Where is he?" She wondered aloud and continued circling the pool. She wondered on the words he left her in the note. 'Went to pool and return to Moon soon.' What did that mean anyway? Was it again one of his little jokes?

A shadow crossed the mist behind her. Clara stressed out turned promptly around but there was nothing but mist and it got thicker every minute.

"I'd need a knife just to get through this place." Clara thought amused despite the recent stress moment. "How does a pool get to boil this hot anyway?" She did not really expect someone to answer this one. Still the Doctor's note sent her here and thus there had to be a reason for that. The Doctor never did anything for any reason.

Another shadow crossed the mist around her but this time she distinctly heard a splash.

"Hello! Is there anybody?" Clara called out hoping this time for an answer. Of course she did not get one but the splashing water sounds continued and then she heard someone swear very loudly at his rotten luck but the sound of the voice was muffled.

Clara moved to the source of the water splashing while trying not to fall into the pool though she had to really solely rely on her instincts for that.

"Oops," She barely pulled herself back from the edge. "One more step and I'd boil." And she laughed. The laugh was light and she felt brighter, and much braver.

She continued walking by the edge till she reached the place she last heard the muffled swearing but there was now only silence. 'Did he drown?' The thought passed through her mind as quick as a flash.

Nah! Whoever it was he probably just got out of there.

Another splash, and then another, and another, and a few more and she got wet, soaking in it really. 'What goes on?' She wondered. It was as though a whole bunch of people jumped in the hot, boiling water. 'Did they think it is some form of salvation? I'd wager they just found out how wrong they were.'

And she was right. There were many muffled screams of surprise and swears. She wanted so much to hear the words but they somehow escaped her. It was more like some bad tuning of an instrument trying to get right the melody but falling short a few tones.

"Hello! Can anyone hear me?" Clara this time shouted out hoping they would hear though probably just as muffled as she hears them. She waited patiently for an answer but the minutes passed and there was still no answer. Even the splashes faded and the water stilled.

"I definitely do not understand any of this. Doctor where are you?"

And yes, where is the Doctor? Where is the famed, cursed and wonderful Doctor? Did he leave oh beautiful, elegant and charming Clara alone again? Where is the Doctor? Now, don't you know to know…nah you don't for this would kill the suspense.

"Colonel Maybourne! Sir, are you alright?" Major Marks asked.

Harry Maybourne looked at him and shook slightly head. He was still wet from the hellish pond they all fell into just ten minutes ago. They began running from two horrid looking beings apparently made of lava. Right, left, left, right, and then they splashed straight into that boiling hell. Well fell is a strong word actually they slipped on the wet floor and like some lost figure skating amateurs landed head on into the water.

"Yes, I am fine, thank you, Major." H. Maybourne said. "Considering…" He added more to himself than to the major. "Are the others all out?"

"Yes, sir," Major Marks said and helped him up.

"What was that horrible voice in the air?" Lt Hailey asked. She still shuddered from it.

"I don't know, Lieutenant." H. Maybourne admitted. It was not enough they got wet soaked but then there was this eerie loud voice that got the bejesus out of them. He had begun hating this place and longed for his newly adopted home world where his many wives awaited his glorious return.

"Where to now, Colonel?"

"I wish I knew." Maybourne truly did not know what to do. It was easier back in the days when one had a map or at least a vague idea where he could go. But here in this insane maze, he felt like going in endless ever-changing circles. At times he even doubted they would find the way out. He preferred now being on a Goa'uld ship. The corridors there also looked alike but at least they did not change every ten minutes.

The places they visited while in this insane place were many. First there was the Stone Obelix, then the Coliseum, the Luxembourg garden, or at least he hoped it was, high ceiling library with four or six floors, a fireworks shop maintained by flying monkeys, a dusty old gallery with all sorts of paintings, four tennis courts with balls that bounced on their own on the ground and off the walls and off them, a room full of rusty armors some of which tried to kill them, and now the hot steaming pool.

Some of these places deserved longer stay and study but the need to find the missing teams was more important so Maybourne pushed his team to move on. The Stone Obelix was the biggest monument of this stature he had ever seen anywhere. It had many engravings and symbols on it though from just ten feet one could not see a damn thing. Still there was something captivating in it but Harry could not quite place what. He did not have the time to properly have a look at it.

Nah, Maybourne shook head. His mission was clear from the start – find the missing teams. And yes he would find them even he had to spend a life time in this cursed placed looking.

"Major Marks, take point. We continue our search for our missing teams. Aron, you will take the back with Lt Hailey. Move out!"

"Yes, sir,"

Maybourne took one last look at the corridor they used to get out of the pool and hoped the horrid voice would not follow. He wished he could understand this crazy place but every time he would see a pattern it would change and smash his theories.

Aron patiently waited with Lt Hailey for Maybourne to take lead with Major Marks. Maybourne nodded at them and moved on. The path ahead was not clear but their friends needed them so forward they go.

Samantha had left the circular room in search of her friends. Vala and Teal'c had disappeared and she needed to find them. Her meeting with Thor touched her profoundly though she had a billion more questions to ask.

She tried to remember what had happened but the memory kept evading her. The last thing she remembered before waking up on the floor before the column and meeting Thor's hologram was that Vala, Teal'c and she were under the humming column exchanging looks saying you know what just happened when they drifted to other realities and had strange experiences. And then some strange noise filled the air, the column sprang open and there was this light, so blinding that encompassed them and then everything around faded.

Sam reached a fork.

"Where to now?" She pondered aloud trying to decide left or right. Technically speaking it did not matter much left or right it is pure randomness and luck though most scientists did not believe in it anyway (it was impossible to prove it did exist), randomness on the other hand was fully provable. So without any further ado, Sam closed eyes and picked a direction – left.

And left it was but left or right it did not matter at all as the corridors were all perfectly alike or at least it looked this way. For Sam it really did not matter though just a few hundred meters away she quickly changed her mind. The faceless creatures they met the first time around moved in her direction. Sam swiftly turned around and ran as quickly as her legs held her away from these terrifying things.

And she ran, and ran, and ran, left, right; right, right and left, and then she hit the ground as something stood in her way and gave up some angry sounds. She quickly understood she had run into someone and it was not one of the faceless things. She opened her eyes and sought out the person she came into and her mouth remained opened as she stood gaping.

Two meters away from her stood a man who wore dark blue suit and shirt, blue grayish trousers and black shoes. His grayish hair and wrinkled forehead did not subdue or softened the maniacal look in his eyes. He was quickly on his feet and stared at Samantha for one long moment before offering her a hand to stand. She accepted though she made several steps away from this man.

What she found disturbing in this man before her was the eyes. They spoke of experience she had never seen before in anyone. This man had seen much and yet his age…his age, Samantha thought, though he appeared not older than fifty-sixty…oh the eyes said so much more…

Samantha had closed her mouth but now opened to ask the obvious question.

The man just made one step back still staring at her until a devilish/serious smile appeared on his face and he cut the distance between them again.

"Hello!" He said with surprisingly soft voice. "I'm the Doctor!"

"Doctor Who?"

To be continued…
