A One in a Millionth Chance
*This is a Klaine and Blellie story. Weird combination, I know, but I had an idea. It may start out as confusing, but it'll become clearer.
*I don't think that there will be POV's, but it will focus on one of the main 4 characters in each chunk of the story. I might do POV's when something important happens though.
*So, every chapter is going to be titled. The title is going to be based off of a lyric of a song, or song title, that I think fits the chapter.
*This chapter is titled by Nellie's song 'Left'
.Nellie.
"What happened?" Kurt questioned as he shut the door.
"I'm sorry I ruined your date"
"Nells, it's fine, I just want to know what happened. Why didn't you go on your date?"
"I was planning to…"
"Then why didn't you?" Kurt questioned as he sat next to her on the bed, placing a hand on her leg. "You can tell me, I won't judge"
"Well, I got to Blaine and Blake's building and I was about to go in, but something stopped me…"
(A/N this will be a flashback, and it will be in italics)
Nellie walked down the street with a large smile on her face. She hadn't had a date since…him. But Blake seemed like the perfect guy to date. He was sweet, funny, and handsome, and her friends knew him well, so he wasn't exactly a stranger. So, it seemed perfect.
She walked into the apartment building and began to climb the flights of stairs up to Blake and Blaine's apartment. She was looking down at her feet, making sure her outfit looked okay, when she bumped into someone who was going down the stairs.
"Sorry!" Nellie exclaimed and then looked up at the person who ran into her. She gasped and stumbled back slightly "J-Josh"
The man in front of her gave her a evil smile "Nellie! Hi!" Nellie felt her eyes start to water. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm-" Nellie started "I'm"
"Spit it out Nells"
"Don't call me that" Nellie spat "And I'm going on a date"
"Oh really?" Josh smirked "With someone who lives in this building?" Nellie nodded, trying to hold back her tears and the urge to slap him. "Who then?"
"Blake Jenner" Josh let out a cruel laugh "What's so funny about that?"
"Blake's got no game"
"How do you even know him?"
"He's my neighbor" Nellie's eyes widened and then she shoved past him "So, I guess if you go out with him, we'll be seeing a lot of each other" Josh winked at her and then continued down the stairs. "See you later, babe"
"Wait…Josh as in your ex-boyfriend Josh?!" Nellie nodded, stuffing yet another spoonful of ice cream into her mouth "Did you leave after that?"
"No" Nellie sighed "I made it to Blake's door and I was about to knock but then I realized that I was just a mess and that he deserves better. So I left"
"Nellie…."
"I know I should've texted him, but what was I going to say?" Nellie frowned "'Hey! I just ran into my ex-boyfriend who tore my heart out and it turns out he's your neighbor! Don't really want to go on a date now! Sorry'"
"Nellie, Blake would've understood. He probably would've comforted you" Kurt squeezed her knee "He likes you a lot"
"Can we not talk about this anymore?" Nellie asked as she placed her ice cream on her bedside table. "I just want to go to bed"
"Nells, it's not even 7 yet"
"I've had a long day!" Nellie snapped and Kurt put his hands up in surrender before he slid off the bed, grabbing the ice cream right before he was about to turn around to leave. "Kurt?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry I got mad at you" Nellie sighed "I know you're just trying to help"
"It's okay, Nell, I get why you did get upset" Kurt smiled softly at her "I'm sorry that he showed up in your life again"
"I am too"
Kurt patted her foot and threw her a small smile "Maybe one day someone will come down off that mountain and tell you-"
"That everything's gonna be alright?" Nellie sniffled and Kurt nodded "I hope so"
"Night Nellie, love ya"
"Love ya too, Kurt" Nellie said and Kurt then walked out the door. Nellie walked over to her dresser drawers and opened the bottom one, pulling out some sweat pants. She pulled her jeans off and pulled the other pants on, sighing as she made her way back over to her bed, where she slipped under the covers, trying to block out the voices coming from outside her door. Apparently Rachel was home.
Soon, they were gone, and Nellie was close to drifting off to sleep.
But her phone vibrating made her eyes snap open. She let out a groan and then flipped over, reaching a hand over to her bedside table, trying to find her phone. She found it and then opened her eyes, squinting at the screen that was brightly illuminated. It didn't say who the call was from, because this number wasn't saved in her contacts, but she still knew the number.
She had dialed that number for about 6 months, not needing to look through her contact list, already having the number memorized in her brain.
And for some reason, she answered it.
"Hello?" She said as she sat up, paying full attention to the voice on the other line.
"Nellie! Hi!"
"How'd you get my number?" Her voice was hollow and cold, and she hoped that Josh would get the hint and leave her alone.
"Never deleted it, baby" Nellie suddenly felt the urge to throw up as she heard the word pour from his mouth. When he used to say that to her, she swooned, but now, it simply made her want to vomit up the ice cream she had just stuffed down her throat.
"Don't call me that" Nellie snapped.
"Oooh, Nellie got feisty"
"You got that right"
"I never did tell you how much I liked feisty girls, now did I?"
"No, I don't believe you did…" Nellie rolled her eyes "But, I guess that's why you went for Lily Mae, right?"
Lily Mae Harrington used to be Nellie's best friend. They had known each other since they were little, but once middle school started, they drifted, and it was oddly okay for both of them. They both gained a different group of friends. Besides, Nellie was starting to hate her old friend. But Lily never quite understood that.
They kind of started to hang out again when Nellie went back to Tacoma. It seemed that Lily wanted to be best friends with her again once Josh came into the picture. And now, looking back on all of it, Nellie finally understood all of it.
Lily was the girl that she had caught Josh with.
But, she always seemed to leave that small bit of information out of her story of heartbreak.
Which seemed to be her story of heartbreak and betrayal.
"Nells, it was a huge mistake!" Nellie rolled her eyes. "You have to believe me!"
"That's the problem though, Josh" Nellie said, standing up as she grew angrier and angrier. "I don't believe you"
"Come on, Nellie! I know you want to be with me" Nellie fought the urge to let out a loud, frustrated scream. She could practically hear the smirk on his face as he said that.
"No, I don't, Josh, stop trying to make your ego bigger and realize that I hate you"
"Then why didn't you show up to your date this fine evening?" Nellie's eyes widened and she started to pace.
"How did you know that? Are you so desperate that you're stalking girls now?"
"Babe, we both know that I'll never have to be desperate"
"Yeah, we'll see about that when you're in your mid 30's, losing all your hair, and you're still single" Nellie shot back.
"I'll never be single" Once again she could hear the smirk in his voice "Because I'll always have you" He snickered and Nellie's eyes narrowed in anger. There was a silence as Nellie debated yelling at him or staying calm. Plus, she knew that if she stayed silent for a while, he'll think that he has her hook, line, and sinker. Nellie knew she was right, when she heard him chuckle.
"You're wrong" Her voice was cold, flat, and hard.
"W-what?" He was obviously shocked by her response, which caused her to smile.
"You're wrong" Nellie said, clearly enough for him to hear all of the pain and sorrow that she was tossing right back at him. The pain and sorrow that she had felt when she found him with Lily Mae. She was getting her revenge, slowly but surely. She was going to show him that he wasn't the man he thought he was. "You won't always have me." She smirked "You don't even have me now"
She heard him snort on the other line, and then breath out a sentence, that sounded more like he was trying to convince himself more than her "You'll come crawling back. I know you will, just by your reaction to seeing me on the stairs earlier today"
"But I won't come crawling back" Nellie said as she turned around, staring out her window with a smile, obviously proud of herself. "I have a lot more respect for myself than I had when I was dating you. I've moved on. And I'm never going back" Nellie couldn't help the smirk that danced across her face. "You had your chance."
"You'll regret this-"
"I really don't think I will" Nellie said as she walked over to her dresser again and stared down at the notebook that held all of her songs. The lyrics to 'Left' staring right back at her. "I know what you can do now. And I've been so scared to even give a guy a chance because I thought he would end up being just like you: an asshole" Nellie then stared at the last few lines of her song, smiling brightly "But I'm not afraid anymore. I know that I will get hurt, but that'll only lead me to the right guy"
"Whatever" Josh snorted half-heartedly "You'll end up living alone with 20 cats"
"You know what?" Nellie smirked and wished someone was here to witness this next comment, knowing that it was going to be gold. "I'd rather be stuck with 20 cats, than be stuck with you"
And with that, she hung up the phone, with a triumph grin. And then she sang out "I won't feel hurt anymore. I won't feel lost anymore."
She went through her contact list on her phone and found the name she was looking for. Her thumb hovered over the 'Call' button, but she hit it after a short moment, pressing the cool glass to her ear.
"I'll feel my heart once more…I'll feel beautiful"
Nellie let out a sigh of relief as she heard a voice on the other line.
"Hello?"
.Kurt.
Kurt walked out of Nellie's room with a sigh. That poor girl. She had been so excited about going on this date, and then she runs into her ex-boyfriend –literally- and it ruins everything.
Kurt swears to the God that he never believed in that if he ever saw this Josh guy that broke Nellie's heart and ruined the chances of 'Blellie' (Rachel came up with it, not him) ever happening, he would kill him. And it would be a slow, painful death. Kurt was sure of it.
He started walking to his room, needing to call Blaine, but he ran into his tiny brunette roommate. "What were you doing in Nellie's room?" Rachel asked suspiciously. "She's on her date, so it wouldn't be right for you to take things, cause we both know you do that-"
Kurt sighed, clearly frustrated "Not now, Rachel"
"Oooh, you seem annoyed" Rachel teases as she pokes his stomach, making him roll his eyes and walk past her. "Kurt!" She whined, racing after him "Why are you so angry?"
"Because Nellie and Blake didn't have their date"
"What?!" Rachel exclaimed as Kurt walked into the kitchen, stowing the sealed ice cream tub back into the freezer, and placing Nellie's dirty spoon into the sink. "Did Blake call it off, because I will tear the balls off of that boy and shove it down his-"
"Rachel!" Kurt exclaimed "It wasn't Blake, it was Nellie. She didn't go"
"What the hell?!"
"She ran into Josh-"
"Her ex-boyfriend?!" Rachel asked with wide eyes as she sat on one of the stools.
"Yes," Kurt sighed and then went to stand across from her. "She ran into him as she was entering the building to go to Blaine and Blake's apartment. Josh is their neighbor apparently"
"Oh, poor Nellie!" Rachel cried and started to get off the stool "I should go talk to her!"
"She's trying to sleep"
"At 7?!"
"Just leave her alone, she's had a rough night" Rachel sighed but nodded anyway, plopping her butt back onto the stool. "I'm gonna go call Blaine" He said as he turned around to walk away. He then realized his mistake, eyes widening in terror. But he kept walking, hoping she hadn't caught on. But, of course, she had.
"Why?" Rachel smirked as Kurt turned back towards her slowly "Don't you have Mark?"
"Who?" And then Kurt's eyes widened once again "Oh! Mark! Yeah...that didn't work out well…"
"So you decided to try things out with Blaine again?" Rachel asked hopefully and Kurt simply shook his head.
"No, Blaine and I are just friends"
"Bull shit!" Rachel exclaimed "I know you want to jump him!"
"Rachel!" Kurt screeched
"What? You do!"
"I do not!" Kurt felt the heat rush to his cheeks, and he then grew aggravated with his emotions. Really? Did they have to pick right now to make him turn red?
"Then why are you blushing?" Rachel smirked and then Kurt looked her in the eye, trying to think of a lie quickly.
"Because, you know I've never been comfortable with talking about sex" There. Kurt thought to himself That was almost believable…maybe if I'm lucky she'll drop it…
"Once again, bull shit" Rachel giggled "You are totally dating Blaine!"
"No, I'm not!" Kurt exclaimed
"What are you two fighting about now?" Both of their heads snapped over to the kitchen entry and they were shocked to see Nellie with a large smile on her face. She walked into the room and she gave them a weird look as she felt their eyes following her. "What?"
"Why are you all happy now?"
"I just got off the phone with Josh-"
"WHAT?!" Kurt and Rachel shouted at the same time, both angry now.
"What the hell, Nells!" Rachel exclaimed "You can't go back to him!"
"I agree with Rach! He's an asshole!"
"I'm not going back to him" Nellie said with a weird expression. "Why would you even think that?"
"You said you got off the phone with him-" Rachel started
"-and you look all happy…" Kurt finished
"I'm happy because I told him off!" Nellie exclaimed "And after I got off the phone with him, I called Blake"
"What did you say to Blake?" Kurt questioned, eyebrow raised.
"I asked him to give me a chance to explain. He let me. And now we have a make-up date for tomorrow"
"That's great!" Rachel exclaimed "Blellie has a second chance!" Nellie turned towards her and gave her a weird look. Rachel's eyes widened and she then looked at Kurt "Why is there, non-vegan ice cream in this apartment?"
/
"I'm surprised that that worked out so quickly" Kurt said softly into his phone, as he started planning his outfit for the next day. He had said goodnight to the girls about 10 minutes ago, and he had called Blaine once he knew that Rachel was in her room for the night.
"I agree" Blaine said from the other line. "But I'm glad it did. Blake was really upset when I got home"
"Really?"
"Yeah, but then Nellie called him and they talked everything out" Blaine said "So, do you know why Nellie didn't show? Blake said he knew, but he just went off to bed after that"
Kurt cleared his throat and then sighed "Umm…yeah" He flicked through his clothing and was glad when he found the jacket he was looking for. "She ran into her ex-boyfriend-"
"The one she wrote that song about?"
"Yeah" Kurt sighed "She ran into him when she was walking up to your guys' apartment. Apparently he's your neighbor"
He heard a gasp and then Blaine spoke again "Josh?"
"Yeah, that's him" Kurt gritted his teeth. He had never actually met the guy, but he hated him. Hated him with a fiery passion.
"That guy does seem like a jerk"
"We don't have to worry about it though, because he called Nellie a little while ago and she told him off" Kurt grinned as tried to find a pair of pants that would match with the jacket he had grabbed "And now, as Rachel would say, 'Blellie' is back on" Kurt chuckled.
"What is back on?"
"Blellie. Rachel made it up. It's Blake and Nellie's couple name" Kurt rolled his eyes, smile still on his face. "She makes couple names for everyone"
"Oh?" Blaine asked, intrigued "And did she make one for us?"
Kurt winced "Yes, she did"
"Are you going to tell me?"
"Klaine"
"Klaine?" Blaine let out a laugh "I actually like it"
"You do?"
"Yeah!" Blaine exclaimed "It could be worse, you know!"
"You're right, it could be like Rachel and Puck's couple name"
"And what's that?"
"Puckleberry"
"Klaine's way better" Blaine chuckled and Kurt smiled as he peeled the covers back on his back.
"Glad you think so, since you are half of Klaine" Kurt teased and Blaine laughed, causing Kurt's heart to soar.
They talked for about another hour or so and then they told each other goodnight, both of them falling asleep as they chatted. Kurt hung up the phone with a bright smile, placing his phone on his bedside table and then snuggling deeper into his warm blankets, grinning at the thought of seeing Blaine again.
If you would've told him in high school that not only would he get a boyfriend, but a boyfriend who seemed to be just…perfect, Kurt would've laughed in your face.
But he was glad that it had happened.
.Blake.
The next day, Blake said goodbye to Kurt, who simply grinned at him and wished him good luck on his make-up date with Nellie, causing Blake to smirk and tell him to have fun on his date with Blaine, but not too much fun. Kurt simply blushed and ordered Blake out of his office, resulting in Blake laughing as he exited the building.
Blake wandered the streets of New York City as he made his back to his apartment, smiling at the people he knew and being kind and polite to the people he didn't.
Before he knew it, he was back at his apartment building. He was about to start climbing the stairs to the second floor, when he received a text.
I'm here :)
Blake smiled in relief. When Nellie had called him last night, he was reluctant to answer. He was also reluctant to having this 'make-up' date, afraid that she would simply stand him up again, leaving him heartbroken, yet again.
But the text he had just received, made all of his worries and doubts wash away. He smiled as he typed back his reply (Be up in a second, my jerk of a boss wouldn't let me leave early(; ) and then sent the message, right before he dashed up the stairs.
He got to his floor and he turned down his hallway, smile bright on his face, but then it faltered as he saw Nellie standing beside his door with a guy.
What's going on?
Blake walked closer and realized that Nellie was being trapped against the wall by none other than his new neighbor, who's name he couldn't remember at the current moment. Blake quickened his pace and when Nellie saw him, her expression changed and she looked relieved.
"Blake" She squeaked as she struggled to get out of her small trap "Hi!"
"I can't believe you're giving this guy another shot" His neighbor sneered and Blake raised an eyebrow, clearly confused. "Like I said, no game" He gestured towards Blake's nice outfit (which Kurt demanded when he first hired Blake, saying no assistant of his would be dressed in a t-shirt and a pair of jeans) and then rolled his eyes.
"Excuse me?" Blake questioned as he took a couple step towards them.
"Dude, where'd you get your outfit, seriously?" His neighbor snorted.
"Josh, stop it" Nellie said quietly, struggling to get out of his hold.
"Let her go" Blake said, taking another step towards the two of them, glaring at his neighbor –Josh, he noted- as he simply smirked at him. "You don't have any right to touch her"
"Oh really?" Josh smiled evilly as he looked at Nellie, pressing his body up against her. "I believe I do, considering I'm her boyfriend"
"Shut up, Josh, you're not my boyfriend" Nellie said, trying to push him away, which simply made Josh grab her arms and pin them to the wall.
Blake snapped. He walked over and shoved Josh, not enough to make him fall, but enough to make him stumble back and release Nellie. Nellie rubbed at her wrists and then Blake stood in front of her as Josh walked towards them. "Just leave. We don't want you here"
"I know Nellie does"
"No, I don't" Nellie spat, peeking out from behind Blake slightly. "Do you not remember what I said to you on the phone last night?" She smirked slightly "I'd rather be alone with 20 cats than be stuck with you" Blake had to bite back his laugh as he saw the anger rush through the guy that was standing across from him. "And I meant it, so leave, now."
"Why should I? I live here too?"
"In the hallway?" Blake snorted "Just go into your apartment and we won't call the cops"
"Why would you call the cops?"
"You're being a disturbance"
"God, you guys are a bunch of pussies" Josh exclaimed as he opened the door to his apartment, walked in and then slammed it. Blake rolled his eyes and then turned towards Nellie.
"So, that's your ex-boyfriend?" He questioned and she nodded, cheeks bright red at the embarrassment. "It's okay, I'm not judging you or anything" Nellie smiled at him and then he pulled out his key and unlocked the door. He pushed it open and stepped aside so Nellie could walk in. He followed her in and then locked the door after him.
"I'm sorry about him" Nellie said softly as she turned back towards Blake as he took his jacket off. She followed his lead and then h grabbed her coat from her and hung them on the coat rack that stood by the door. "He's just mad because I turned him down last night"
Blake smiled as he led her into the kitchen "And I'm glad you did" She smiled back at him as they entered the kitchen. "So, what should we make for dinner…" He trailed off as he opened the fridge. He let out a groan and Nellie threw him a questioning look. "Blaine didn't go to the store like he was supposed to" Nellie laughed, she had known Blaine for only a couple of weeks, but she knew that he often forgot things. "Well, we could order pizza or something if you want" Blake smiled and she smiled back in response.
"That sounds good"
/
"Wait, so you and Kurt didn't like each other?" Blake chuckled as he took a bite of his pizza. Nellie nodded and smiled.
"Well, I had no problem with him, but he hated me"
"Why?"
"Because of my outfits"
Blake let out a laugh "That's something Kurt would do. Hate people for their clothing"
"He did it to Rachel too, he still does"
"And yet all three of you are roommates, that's a little weird"
Nellie smiled and agreed and then crossed her legs on the couch. "So, you said you and Blaine met in high school?"
"Yeah, we both went to Dalton Academy. It's an all boys school. Blaine went because he had issues with bullying and I went just because my parents didn't really want me around"
"Oh, I'm sorry-"
"Don't, I'm over it. We still talk, but honestly I'm closer to Blaine's parents than my own. I wish my childhood was a little better, but can't exactly change it, now can I?" Blake chuckled light heartedly, but Nellie could tell he wasn't really used to being this open, so she spoke up.
"My childhood wasn't the best either" Nellie said as she sat her piece of pizza back on her plate. "Everything was good up until I turned 9. My older sister, Jamie was diagnosed with depression" Blake gave her a sympathetic look "Then the doctor gave her an overdose of medicine and she was in a coma for a while" Nellie sighed sadly "We then decided to take her off life support." Nellie bit her lip, trying not to cry. "She was only 16"
"Oh my God, Nellie" Blake placed his pizza on his plate and then placed the paper plate on the coffee table. After he did so he scooted over and hugged her tightly. Well, as tightly as he could considering there was still pizza on her lap.
"I'm sorry" Nellie said softly as she hugged him back. "I didn't mean to start crying"
"It's fine, I understand" Blake smiled softly at her, pulling away to look at her. His eyes flickered between her eyes and her lips, and before either one of them knew it, Blake was kissing her. Nellie was about to start kissing back, but he had already pulled back. "Oh, God! I'm so sorry. I shouldn't just kiss you like that-" Nellie let out a small giggle as she placed her pizza on the coffee table. "-Especially since you were just crying and I was taking advantage of you being vulnerable! God! I'm so-"
Blake was then cut off by Nellie placing a hand on the back of his neck and bringing his lips down to hers. He was shocked at first, but then he smiled against her lips and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her closer, while his other hand stroked her cheek.
They broke away a little later, panting. "You don't need to be sorry for kissing me" Nellie smiled at him and placed her hand on his, which had slipped off of her cheek, and onto his lap. "I liked it" Blake smiled at her and then leaned back in, Nellie expected him to kiss her again, but he pulled away slightly at the last moment.
"I do have one question that has been bugging me since yesterday"
"Okay, what's your question?"
"What was Kurt talking about the other day?"
Nellie gave him a weird look "Kurt talks about a lot of things, I usually tune him out, so you'll have to be a little more specific." Blake chuckled and then gave her an Eskimo kiss, which made her blush and smile at him shyly.
"When we were trying to 'out embarrass' Blaine and Kurt yesterday. Kurt said that you wrote a song about me, and you said-"
"I swear I didn't! It could've been about you!" Nellie's eyes widened as she realized what she said "It could've been about a lot of people! Oh, God! This is embarrassing" Blake chuckled light heartedly and squeezed her hand, signaling that he thought it was fine, whatever it was. "I wrote a song about Josh, and at the end I said something about a different guy coming along and sweeping me off my feet. Yes, I did write the ending after I met you, but that doesn't necessarily mean-" And this time it was Blake's turn to cut her off with a kiss. He pulled away after a short moment and smiled
"I understand,"
"You know, we like to cut each other off a lot" Nellie smiled and Blake raised an eyebrow in confusion "Well, you were talking before, and I cut you off by kissing you, and then you did that same thing to me-" Nellie giggled a little into the kiss that Blake had cut her off with yet again. "Like that" She smiled after they had pulled away.
"So, now we have a thing"
"So now we do" Nellie smiled at him softly.
.Blaine.
"That's ridiculous!" Kurt exclaimed as he walked over to his bed and sat beside Blaine. "I can't believe you even think that"
"Well, it's true! Don't even try to deny it!"
"Lady Gaga is way better than Katy Perry"
"That's so not true! Katy Perry doesn't wear meat!"
"So, she wears candy instead! Yeah, that's cool" Kurt snorted
"Well, at least Katy Perry's songs aren't meaningless!"
"Oh really, 'You're so gay and you don't even like boys' that's offensive and stupid"
"What about 'Alejandro'?!" Blaine shot back.
"I'll give you that point, considering that point makes no sense," Kurt trailed off and then got angered again "At least Lady Gaga seems like a nice person! Katy Perry seems like a bitch!"
"You don't know that though!"
"Neither do you! So I could be right!"
"Or wrong!" Blaine then stopped shouting and looked at Kurt "Is this really what our first fight is about?"
Kurt let out a laugh and nodded "I guess so…wanna kiss and make up?"
"I'd love to" Blaine smiled and started leaning in, but the two of them quickly pulled away when they heard a shrill voice from the doorway to Kurt's room.
"I KNEW IT!"
