Chapter 9: The Incredible Hulks
Death Valley
Days since last incident: 0
Time: 1000 h
The hot desert sun was beating down on Rick when he woke up. They had been so tired from training that they had slept in. Yawning he stretched and sat up. He stood and walked over to the crates that had their food in it. It wasn't until he turned back to the fire that he saw Bruce was missing. Rick looked around thinking maybe Bruce woke up early and went for a walk but he didn't see him anywhere near camp.
"Jen," Rick called as he tried to stay calm, "Do you know where Bruce is?"
"What?" Jen ask groggily.
"Where's Bruce?" Rick said again.
"In his sleeping…" she started as she rolled over to face Rick. Jen sat straight up and said, "Bruce is gone!"
"Really, I hadn't noticed," Rick snapped.
Jen stood up and began to help Rick look. "Rick over here," Jen called after a few minutes. Rick walked over and she pointed down at a set of massive tracks. "He went Hulk," she whispered.
Just then they heard the sound of engines. Rick and Jen turned to see a quinjet coming their way. The second it landed Agent Barton came rushing out. "Where's Bruce?" he asked immediately.
"We were just trying to figure that out," Jen answered.
Hawkeye looked around and his gaze landed next to Bruce's sleeping bag. "What's this?" he asked.
"What's what?" Rick said annoyed. When he didn't get a response Rick turned to the SHIELD agent and saw he was holding a tablet in his hand. "That wasn't here last night," Rick commented.
Together Hawkeye, Jen and Rick watched as the tablet came to life and played the same recording it had for Bruce. Jen and Rick stood in shock. Barton on the other hand swore loudly making the other two jump. "I was just coming here to tell him myself," Barton explained.
"That's where he went then. Gamma Base?" Jen said.
"We have to go help him. Who knows what they have up their sleeves," Rick said.
"I am coming with you," Barton said.
"Why?" Jen asked.
"I may not know Bruce as well as you two but he and the Hulk helped a lot in New York. I think it is only right that I help him now."
Rick and Jen nodded as they began to turn into A-bomb and She-Hulk. "I hope you're ready," Jen said.
A-bomb and She-Hulk were giving the quinjet a run for its money. In a few minute the base was in sight. She-Hulk and A-Bomb continued to charge toward the base. As they got near they started to see signs of a massive battle that had already ended. No one approached them. She-Hulk began to look around as she ran and spotted them on the roof. She yelled a warning to Rick and together they jumped.
Titania met She-Hulk full force and the women began to fight. This time however Titania was having trouble keeping up. She-Hulk may have not been training for long but she remembered everything she had been taught by A-bomb. She darted around Titania throwing kicks and punches at every opportunity. Titania had quickly been put on guard.
A-bomb for his part had collided with Abomination. They were evenly match and managed to block each other's every blow. Samson had jumped down to where the two women were fighting. As soon as he landed however he found himself diverted by a barrage of bullets. Looking up he saw Baton in the quinjet.
Samson scowled and leapt into the air toward the jet. He managed to grab hold of the gun that was shooting at him. As he clamped his hand down the barrels crumpled. Samson flipped himself up onto the roof and ripped his way inside.
She-Hulk and Titania were totally oblivious to everyone else as they fought. She-Hulk suddenly changed tactics and through the most powerful punch she could. Titania raised her arm to block but was still sent flying onto the far side of the roof. "What was that about you being the strongest woman?" She-Hulk yelled tauntingly. Titania flipped herself onto her feet and charged She-Hulk.
A-Bomb was making little headway against Abomination. Neither seemed to be able to land a blow. A-Bomb made a swipe with a wild haymaker but Abomination caught the punch. Abomination brought his knee up at the same time he forced A-Bomb's face down. A-Bomb's face slammed into Abomination's knee and he stumbled backward. Anger exploded inside of A-Bomb.
Abomination's face suddenly went slack in confusion as he said, "Where'd you go?" A-Bomb said nothing; it was obvious where he was, why should he? Abomination however continued to look around as if A-Bomb had disappeared. A-Bomb took advantage of Abomination's confusion and through two quick punches. Both blows landed on Abomination's jaw as he did nothing to block them.
Abomination stumbled back but that was not what caught A-Bomb by surprise. He had not seen his hands. A-Bomb held one of them up where he knew it would be in front of his face but saw nothing. A-Bomb smiled. He charged Abomination and unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks that left the former soldier dazed. A-Bomb turned to check on She-Hulk and found that Titania had her in a headlock.
A-Bomb charged, the only thing giving away his advance was the cloud of dust that rose from his feet. Titania looked on as the dusk cloud approached her, never loosening her grip on She-Hulk. Suddenly she felt herself lifted off the ground as a fist made contact with her nose. Titania's grip broke and She-Hulk was free as A-Bomb reappeared.
"Since when could you do that?" She-Hulk asked.
"Don't know," A-Bomb responded.
Just then Hawkeye dropped down onto the roof and rolled to their feet. There was blood running from a cut along his scalp. The quinjet slammed into the ground and exploded. Samson had jumped out and landed with a thud next to Abomination. Titania was back on her feet and the trio of monster circled A-Bomb, She-Hulk, and Hawkeye.
They all leapt into action at the same time. A-Bomb jumped at Abomination. She-Hulk slammed into Titania, and Hawkeye began send explosive arrow after explosive arrow at Samson. A-Bomb went invisible and ducked around Abomination. A-bomb grabbed Abomination from behind and flipped the monster over his head and through the roof. Together they fell through the floor and onto the concrete of the ground floor.
She-Hulk grabbed Titania by the ankle, bringing her to the ground. With a mightly punch the two fell through the roof and slammed into something that clanged like metal. She-Hulk began to pummel Titania with punches. The metal below them didn't even dent and soon Titania was an unconscious heap.
She-Hulk jumped back up through the hole she had fallen through. Samson was being kept at bay but Hawkeye was running out of arrows. She-Hulk and Hawkeye made eye contact and instantly had a plan. Hawkeye let up on his fire. Samson began to move in but before he could get very far She-Hulk had flipped him onto his and was repeating what she had done to Titania. Hawkeye was still firing a few arrows that hit Samson in the skull and the combine forces knocked him cold.
"We have to catch up with A-Bomb," She-Hulk said. Hawkeye nodded as She-Hulk picked him up and jumped through the hole created by A-Bomb and Abominations.
"Go find out where they are keeping Bruce and Betty," She-Hulk instructed the archer as he ran off.
Gamma Base
Office of Leader
Time: 1200 h
Leader listened to the sounds of the battle that was raging outside.
"You should allow me to take care of them," Brian Banner growled.
"No I want you here. Abomination and the others can take care of this," Leader scowled. Brian Banner had reverted to human form after defeating the Hulk and he was now willingly following orders. Together they listened as the battle moved onto the roof top.
They heard as the ceiling was smashed and the fight moved into the building. There was the sound of metal being beaten followed by the sudden end of the explosions. It still sounded like one pair was fighting in the halls but there was no way of telling who they were. "Go keep guard over your son's prison," Leader instructed.
Brian smiled as he walked out of the room.
Gamma Base
Prison of the Hulk
Time: 1230 h
Hulk was still struggling against his chain. More so now than before he heard someone beating on his cell walls. Green blood dripped onto the ground from the cuts made by his tugging on the bindings. He wasn't getting tire though. He was just getting angrier. He could hear the sounds of a fight going on outside his cell.
She-Hulk and A-Bomb must have realized he was missing. From the sounds of it they were putting up a good show but he knew neither of his friends could take down the Devil Hulk. He would deal with that monster. He had only been caught off guard before. Now he was ready. Now he would destroy this base and save Betty.
So he continued to struggle. "SHE-HULK I'LL HOLD THEM OFF GET HULK FREED!" he heard A-Bomb yell. Hulk heard the scraping of a lock and She-Hulk burst into the room. She looked a little worn but seemed ok.
"Betty," Hulk said.
"We are going to get her next," She-Hulk said as she released Hulk.
Hulk stood and flexed his hands then let out a huge roar as he charged from the room. Just as he reached the door he saw the figure of A-Bomb fighting Abomination and Devil Hulk. Hulk jumped up to Devil Hulk's head and began throwing punches. Devil Hulk reach up and grabbed Hulk around the waist and through him to the ground.
A-Bomb was now fighting Abomination with the help of She-Hulk. Hulk rolled to the side to avoid Devil Hulk's foot. The giant monster's foot went crashing through the floor and in to the lower levels of the base. Devil Hulk's massive hand made a grab for Hulk. Hulk caught two of the fingers and held the monster at bay.
A-Bomb was flickering in and out of visibility as he and She-Hulk danced around Abomination. Dark blood was oozing from Abomination's nose and he was beginning to look tired. She-Hulk ducked bellow a punch and swept the legs out from under Abomination. A-Bomb was there in an instant as he began to hammer Abomination into the ground. Abomination used his feet to kick the blue monster off him and was standing once more.
Hulk had his back pressed up against the adamantium wall of his former cell. Devil Hulk was smiling down on him. Hulk saw an arrow fly toward his enemies head and explode on contact. Devil Hulk didn't even notice. "HELP OTHERS," Hulk yelled knowing Hawkeye would listen. Hulk pushed back on the massive hand holding him in place and took a shaky step forward. Just as he ducked around the side of the hand and escaped it pair came soaring at him as he was forced to duck.
Devil Hulk's fist slammed into the adamantium wall. A massive gong like sound ripped through the air and dazed every one nearby. Devil Hulk, Hulk, She-Hulk, A-Bomb, and Abomination stumbled around for a few second shaking their head trying to clear them. Hawkeye was nowhere to be seen. Hulk was the first to recover and immediately resumed his attack on the Devil Hulk.
Devil Hulk seem to have been affected the worst of all the monster as he seemed to have trouble coordinating his movements. Hulk reached the top of Devil Hulk's back and slammed both fist into the back of Devil Hulk's head. Devil Hulk roared. Hulk jumped over the monster's massive skull and grabbed the creatures tongue. Devil Hulk came crashing to the ground. Hulk was standing in front of his former prison door. Hulk jumped through the door and slammed his father's head into the frame.
Devil Hulk bellowed and tried to pull back but Hulk jerked on the monster tongue and brought the head into the wall once more. Hulk heard two booms as Devil Hulk placed his hands on either side of the door and began to pull back, dragging the Hulk with him. Hulk caught himself on the doorframe with one foot on either side of the door. Devil Hulk continued to pull back. Hulk let out a bellow, pulled with all his strength, and slammed the Devil Hulk's skull into the door frame once more. The massive beast finally fell into unconsciousness.
Hulk pushed the monsters head away from the door and emerged into the hallway. A-Bomb had one arm around each of the arms of Abomination as the monster was barraged with arrow from Hawkeye and punches from She-Hulk. Hulk stood watching from the top of Devil Hulk's motionless form for a few seconds. Hulk stepped down and to a few slow steps before breaking into a run.
Hawkeye's arrows stopped and She-Hulk jumped out of the way as if they had this planned. A-Bomb kept his grip on the Abomination as the monster looked around in surprise. Finally he saw Hulk and began to struggle for freedom, but it was too late. Hulk grabbed Abomination by the right arm and spun in Abomination face first into the adamantium wall. Hulk spun Emil Blonsky to face him. Hulk used his left arm to hold Abomination to the wall by his right arm. A-Bomb was there in a second and held the left arm.
Hulk looked at A-Bomb and they came to an understanding. They were friends, not just as Bruce and Rick but also as Hulk and A-Bomb. They were a team. Hulk grunted and nodded to A-Bomb. Together they drew back their free hand and punched Abomination in the face. The monster went limp and began to return to his human form.
Hawkeye jumped down from his vantage point, landing next to She-Hulk. "They are keeping Betty in the lower levels. She-Hulk can show you the way."
Hulk looked at him before Bruce spoke through their shared mouth, "Thank you."
Hawkeye nodded as the sound of a helicopter reached their ear. Agent Barton walked out of the building to catch his ride.
The Incredible Hulks turned and walked to the hole created by Devil Hulk and fell into the lower corridors.
Helicarrier in the Pacific
Time: 1400 h
"The chopper has picked up Barton, sir," said the now awake Agent Hill.
"Good."
"We also have an incoming call from Avengers Tower," Hill added. She didn't see that interested.
"Patch it through."
In a second a Stark's face was on one of Fury's screens. "Suits done," the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist said.
"Who have you chosen to pilot it?" Fury asked.
"I think Happy is a good choice."
"He will do. Make sure and get his some experience in the suit."
"Expecting trouble?"
"I just want to be ready," Fury said before hanging up.
"Sir, he is trying to call back again," Hill said.
"Ignore him," Fury instructed.
Gamma Base
Time: 1415 h
The Hulks had been walking through the halls for about fifteen minutes when they rounded the corner into their destination. Before they could fully enter however they found Leader blocking the way.
"Impressive," He said quietly and indifferently.
"Out of the way," Hulk growled.
"I am afraid I can't do that," Leader said.
Hulk made a swing at the man but before fist got there Leader had vanished. He reappeared just far enough back to avoid the punch. Hulk growled. A-Bomb had gone invisible.
"Bruce!" The voice stopped him dead. Hulk looked down the hall and saw her. Betty, she was here. Across from her was General Ross who looked like he was trying to decide who to root for.
Hulk looked back at Leader. The man was now holding a gun at Hulk who actually laughed. Leader looked confused. Suddenly his eyes widened as his arms snapped to his side and A-Bomb reappeared with his hand around Leader's chest. Leader was lifted off the ground before A-Bomb through him into the wall. Leader lay crumpled on the ground.
"Idiot," A-Bomb said.
Hulk ran over to Betty's cell and ripped the door off. Just then they heard a roar as Devil Hulk woke back up. "Hurry," Hulk said.
"My father," Betty said.
"He can stay," Bulk growled.
"He tried to stop this. Be better than him," Betty said.
Hulk stared at her. Then he turned and ripped the door off the General's cell. "Only once," Hulk growled.
Suddenly the ceiling exploded as Devil Hulk broke his way in. Betty screamed as Hulk protected her from the falling bricks. Hulk turned and looked into the ugly face of the Devil Hulk. She-Hulk and A-Bomb were on the other side of the monster from Bruce.
"I should have killed you when you were a child," Devil Hulk growled. "The monster gene should have ended with me." Hulk lunged for Devil Hulk but was smashed to the side. "I guess I will just have to settle for destroying you now." Devil Hulk moved faster than should have been possible. His right hand swooped down on Betty and he drove one of his massive nails through her chest and pinned her to the wall of her cell.
General Ross screamed. Hulk screamed. Devil Hulk just laughed.
