Chapter 8: Yawn in the Library

Chris walked through the corridors cautiously aiming his Beretta. He turned down one of the corners and saw a double door.

"Looks suspicious" Chris thought to himself.

He walked over to the door and slowly opened it and saw suits of armor standing three next to three on opposite side of the room. Chris didn't really pay attention to the figures. What caught his eye was a small key he saw in his peripheral vision. He picked it up and inspected it. Suddenly one of the suits of armor fell over and the axe it held cut Chris on his left quad. Chris fell back and scuttled across the ground. One of the corpses seemed to appear out of thin air.

Chris realized his Samurai Edge was missing. The creature grabbed Chris and attempted to bite at his face. Chris tried to reach for his supply pack on the back of his belt. Chris felt the hilt of one of his concealed carry knives. He pulled it out and jabbed it into the carrion's skull. The jaw of the creature stopped moving and Chris threw the creature off of him and crawled back, wiping the blood off his face. He picked himself up and reclaimed his Beretta. As he holstered it someone darted into the room.

"Chris, are you ok?" Chris sighed in relief as he saw Jill rush in pointing her gun around.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Jill holstered her handgun when hearing the news.

"Your leg, Chris you are hurt." Jill rushed over to him concerned for his well being.

"Damn axe fell and carved me up." Jill put his arm around her shoulders and helped him down the hall.

"I found Rebecca. She was with Richard." Chris was glad to hear Richard was ok but he didn't know who Rebecca was. The two of them made it down the hall and Chris saw a fairly young girl approximately 18. She was slightly shorter than Jill. She wore a STARS uniform and a white bullet proof vest on top with a big red cross. Her hair was a light brown and just covered her ear lobes. She wore earrings (not recommended for law enforcement). She had a soft looking face. One would make the assumption that she was a shy and passive. She was tending to Richard who seemed to be badly injured.

"Rebecca I'm back" Jill startled Rebecca causing her to reach for her firearm.

"Oh, I'm sorry Jill. You spooked me." She took her hand away from the gun and stood up. She noticed Chris was hurt and walked over to help Jill carry him back.

"I'm Chris Redfield STARS Alpha Team. I am guessing you are the new rookie in Bravo Team I have been hearing about." Rebecca smiled and nodded to respond to Chris's comment.

"I wish I could do more for you Mr. Redfield, but I can't get into this medical closet. Jill has never picked a lock like this before so she wasn't able to get in." Chris thought for a moment. The key he had may work.

"First of all just Chris is fine. Second of all I found a key before. Maybe it will work." Chris handed Rebecca the key and she tried it. *Click* the door unlocked. They all sighed happily and made their way into the room.

"Help me get Richard into the cot." Jill walked with Rebecca and as per request help him into the cot.

"Ok, let me fix your leg up Chris." Rebecca took a close look at it. "This is going to need some stitches.

"Oh great, isn't this my lucky day." Rebecca gave him a handful of tongue compressors and told him to bite down on them. Chris did as told and looked away. Rebecca pulled a stitching hook, stitches themselves, and a hypodermic needle filled with painkillers.

"I hate needles" Chris said angrily as he saw what Rebecca pulled out.

"Chris you are an elite police officer and an ex air force pilot. You can handle a shot and a few stitches." Jill gave him a stern look.

"I'm not complaining. I'm making it known that i despise injections." Chris was too busy talking to Jill to realize that Rebecca had just given him the shot.

"It's done Chris the shot is over." Rebecca said as she grabbed the hook and threaded it.

"Wow that was fast. Next time I get a shot remind me to AH FU…" Jill stuck the compressors in his mouth to prevent his last word and to make sure he didn't bite his tongue off.

"Maybe I should have waited a minute. Just until the painkillers kicked in."Rebecca regrettably commented. Chris looked at Rebecca with wide eyes.

"MHM, yer thernk." Chris's muffled voice said in response.

"Just hold on" Rebecca said as she tried to get through it as fast as possible. Chris continued to bite down on the thin pieces of wood. It took a few minutes bet sooner than later it was finished. Chris spit out the wood. Rebecca was doing the finishing touches by covering it up with Gauss and bandages.

"I am never getting this done again. Can I walk?" Rebecca nodded

"Just be careful. We don't want this to happen all over again right?" Chris gave her a sarcastic smile. Suddenly Richard started to shake uncontrollably.

"He's having a seizure. There is nothing we can do." They all watched in horror. After a while it stopped.

"What happened to him?" Jill asked as she ran her fingers through her hair.

He was bitten by what he said was a giant snake." Chris and Jill looked at Rebecca as if she had ten heads.

"A giant snake, stop screwing around with us what happened." Rebecca became frustrated.

"I am not lying. Now listen up the wounds he received are consistent with those of snake bites. The only difference is that these are much bigger. He needs anti-venom but I need the actual venom from the snake to make one. All the supplies I need to make it is right here but I need the actual venom." Chris and Jill looked at each other.

"Barry said he heard hissing or something in the library." Rebecca's eyes widened

"That's where he was ambushed by the snake." Jill started to leave and Chris followed but was stopped.

"Chis take this with you." Rebecca threw him a Remington model 1897. He caught it and brass checked the gun.

"There are only four slugs in it so use them wisely." Chris nodded and left.

Chris and Jill were walking down the corridors. There was still a slight unevenness because of Jill's previous breakdown.

"So… uh… what happened back in the courtyard?" Jill sighed heavily at Chris's question.

"Remember what my letter of recommendation said underneath the skilled bomb disposalist?" Chris thought for a moment.

"Yeah, it said you are able to stay calm in most situations." Jill nodded

"Well I have seen some really bad things in my life and I mean some really, really bad things. I never reacted or cried. I just bottled it up and kept on going. Barely anything can cause me to freak out or mess me up, but what I saw back there was different. I don't know whether all of those emotions finally exploded, or if this was just too gruesome. What I saw back there was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was disgusting and disturbing. My mind must have tried to expose me to all of the evil I have seen in my life and bring it before me." Chris bowed his head down in silence and kept on listening.

"I saw a graveyard. It was foggy and there was a little girl. It was me, I was the little girl. I followed her around and every time I tried to get to her she was gone. Eventually she was being pulled under by hands. I couldn't help her, but my mom was there. It wasn't her but it looked like her. She wouldn't let me go and she kept screaming at me. So I killed her. I didn't feel anymore regret, fear, sadness, or anything. After that whole ordeal I woke up feeling different." Chris spoke up as they reached the attic.

"Post-traumatic stress, I suffered the same thing in the air force. It goes away well at least for me. You just need to get through it. The memories never go away, but you just learn to suppress them." The two of them just looked blankly at the library door.

"Are you ready?" Chris asked

"Yeah, let's do this." Jill rubbed Chris's shoulder. The two of them took positions and then busted the door down. They walked in firearms at the ready. It was quiet, dark, and dusty. There wasn't anything in there. The lowered their weapons and just looked around. Jill stopped dead in her tracks. There were two glowing red eyes staring at her. Jill whispered to Chris.

"Chris don't move" Chris obnoxiously responded with "What?" He turned around and was met by eyes. He stopped moving as well. He slowly raised the shotgun and aimed it. Dust fell from the ceiling. It tickled his nose and he let out a loud sneeze. The snake started to move around. It lunged at them and they dodged the attack. Chris saw blood dripping down his arm. The snake must have bitten him, or scratched him with its fangs.

"Aw, shit this isn't good." Jill interrupted his thoughts with gun fire. The bullets did little damage to the scales of the reptile. They did in fact make it make it angrier. Chris shot of two shells from the shotgun and managed to make open spots on the snake. In anger the snake whipped its tail at Chris and knocked him into the wall. He fell on all fours and held his stomach.

"Chris!" Jill hollered as she ran up the back of the snake. She opened fire at point blank range at the back of the serpents head. The snake smashed its head against the ceiling which crushed Jill. She rolled down his back and crawled. She gripped her ribs and gasped for air. Chris wasn't feeling so good. His vision was blurry and his stomach really hurt. He felt something coming up his esophagus. Chris vomited blood and stomach contents. He felt like falling over and passing out. Then he heard Jill yell for assistance. He immediately sprang to his feet and shot at the exposed part of the reptile.

Jill continued to crawl and fire with one hand. The snake stopped over Jill. Jill could feel the warm breath on her neck. She knew this was the end. So she closed her eye and waited to meet her demise. She heard it lunge and felt the saliva on her. Nothing happened though and she looked up to see Chris. He had his one arm held up against his chest and the shotgun held the mouth of the snake open.

"Eat this you piece of shit." Chris pulled the trigger and the shotgun fired. Half of the snakes head had been blown off. The snake fell limp to the ground motionless. Chris helped Jill up to her feet.

"Thanks Chris, I owe you one." Jill gave him a grateful smile.

"You can thank me later, but first we need to get the venom to Rebecca." Jill agreed and pulled out a syringe Rebecca gave her. She went to the fang and was able to get a decent amount of venom.

"Hold on Jill" Chris signaled Jill to his position. Jill walked over slowly as she noticed the same thing Chris was looking at. The bookshelf was filled all the way to the ceiling with books, binders, and files containing the Umbrella insignia.

"What is all of this? Why is this all about Umbrella?" as Jill questioned Chris ran his fingers across the shelf and stopped at one of the files.

"This has the least amount of dust on it." Chris pulled the file and saw looked inside. The side of the folder read "Tyrant-Virus" on it.

Chris opened the file and saw that parts were missing. One thing that did catch his eye was a picture of a giant snake code name Yawn. It has a small excerpt from the a report.

"The Tyrant-Virus (a.k.a. T-Virus, or T) has to be one of our greatest scientific achievements. It was only made possible by Spencer's Progenitor-Virus. This virus is able to repair and reproduce dead cells and tissue. In fact reanimate the deceased. Although, this discovery was revolutionary it was also unstable. It doesn't bring back the full body. It only reactivates the cerebellum and parts of the cerebral cortex. The main parts it actives are that of basic instinct. They have little to no memory of their previous lives and only have basic motor functions. One, being the ability to maneuver limbs and catch prey, and the other having the need to feed constantly. They have no boundaries in terms of sustenance, but have tendencies to be attracted to humans for food. The Virus (if introduced into living tissue) will kill its host and bring it back to life once it has seized control of the brain. The other notable thing we have noticed was that the test subject who had been injected directly have in fact mutated into other types of organisms. The transformations are indeed grotesque but none the less make it a more efficient hunter. On the other hand, instead of devouring the flesh of its victim the infected will spread the virus by means of scratches or bites. If infected report to the local facilities for the anti-virus. the anti-virus can prevent the virus from spreading and in most studies eliminate the virus. Enhanced versions of T that have been treat show signs of having remaining active virus strains. This is beneficial to any one containing this virus. It can...

"Wait, no there has to be more." Chris flipped through the pages to see if there was more info. Someone had burned or ripped out parts of the report.

"Chris, we have to report this. At least we have to tell the other members." Jill begged Chris but he shook his head

"We should just keep this to ourselves." Chris was dead serious about this.

"Why? this involves everyone here." Jill had a good point but Chris had reasons to believe otherwise.

"Who does out department send out to deal with disappearances, and or murders?" Jill thought for a moment about Chris's question. Then it hit her

"Detectives, or uniforms (normal police officers). You think we are being set up?" Chris shrugged

"I don't know. What i do know is that SWAT (STARS is a form of SWAT) is only deployed when combat situations are to much to handle for normal uniforms. We should only be deployed if there was an immediate and high stakes danger. Not for some disappearances or murders." As much as Jill didn't want to admit it Chris had an extremely good point.

"Who do you think did this?"

"I am not saying that we were set up Jill. I am just making a hypothesis based on my observations. I hope that I am wrong about this." Jill realized that Richard was waiting for a cure and they had the key.

"Shit, we need to get back." Chris agreed with Jill and the hurried back.

"Remember Jill keep this to yourself."

The two of them went down the hallway as fast as possible. When they got to the room they saw Rebecca standing over a white sheet with the shape of a human underneath.

"No…" Jill put her face in her hand and fell to her knees. Rebecca turned around and was obviously trying to fight back tears.

"He just died a few minutes ago. I couldn't save him because the venom was in his system and…" Rebecca was muttering on and on.

"Rebecca…REBECCA!" Chris managed to snap her out of it. Jill walked over to her and handed her the venom.

"Do you still need this?" Rebecca nodded and brought it back to the work bench. She mixed it with a blue herb and a few other items there.

"Why are you holding your ribcage?" Jill looked at her ribs.

"The damn snake got me pretty bad." Rebecca walked over and lifted Jill's shit. She felt her ribs a little.

"You may have a fractured rib. It should heal, but I can't do anything about it now. If you got bitten I could help." Jill shook her head

"No I wasn't bitten thanks to Chris." Right after she finished talking Chris collapsed to the ground right next to them.

"Oh God, Chris!" Rebecca exclaimed as Jill and her fell to their knees to help him. The two of them turned him face up and saw he was foaming at the mouth.

"Crap he was bitten by the snake." Rebecca injected the serum into his arm and sat back to see if it started to work. Luckily his pulse calmed down as well as his heart rate. He began to breathe normal again as well.

"Oh thank the lord." Jill sighed with relief.

"He is lucky I had the right materials here." Jill laughed uneasily. It was involuntary but it made her feel less stressed.

"Rebecca can you watch after him? We need to find a way out of here. I can't wait any longer this has gotten out of control. I am going to find Barry and Wesker and then we are going leave. Too many people are dying. We will send a search party back here to look for the rest of Bravo Team but our first priority is to get the known survivors back to the city." Rebecca looked away shamefully.

"Bravo Team is dead. After the ambush I am 97% percent sure that everyone else was killed." Jill put her hand on Rebecca's shoulder.

"It's ok Rebecca don't be upset. We can't be sure that they are. We will send a search party. Just stay with me here. I need you to be strong do it for STARS." Rebecca looked at Jill and nodded.

"I will return I promise." Jill gave a wink and then walked out of the room. Rebecca knew that this wasn't the end of the night.
