A/N: Sorry that this is late. It is also a bit of a filler chapter.
Like she had been told, Deeks injury was nothing major and with some pain meds and bandages, they were sent home.
Deeks had spent that night in perpetual apology and had spent as much time with the kids as he could to try and reassure them that he was in fact okay and that they had nothing to worry about.
Telling Kensi that and proving it to her though had proven to be harder.
Maybe it had been because of the pregnancy hormones or because of her intimate knowledge of just how dangerous their job was and could be, but Kensi had found herself unable to fully accept that her husband was fine and wasn't going to get hurt again.
Deeks had tried to convince Kensi that it was just a minor injury, but that had only resulted in her becoming pensive and withdrawn, having closed herself in their bedroom for hours.
It wasn't until the kids had gone to bed that night that she had approached Deeks again and sat down beside him on the couch where he was watching a baseball game.
"Maybe it would be best if one of us got a new job." She had said.
Deeks had froze and turned the game off before he turned to her with shocked and mildly confused eyes.
"Kens, what happened was a fluke." He had tried and saw her jaw tighten.
"Maybe this time; but Marty, what happens if next time it's not a fluke, and the bullet doesn't just graze one of us?" Kensi had asked. "What if next time one of us gets killed? What would happen then to our family?"
"Kensi, in a couple days we're going to adopt them and they will be ours legally." Deeks had pointed out. "So if anything did happen to either of us, which it won't, then we don't have to worry about anyone taking them away or them becoming separated."
"That's not my point Deeks." Kensi had rubbed at her tired eyes. "And you can't promise that nothing will ever happen to one of us."
"Kensi…"
"The kids have already lost their parents and they have gone through stressful times with us being injured. What would it do to them if one of us dies or is injured in a way that alters our family such as a handicap? Do you really think that the kids could handle that? Do you really think that they would be okay with that after everything that they have already been through?" Kensi had asked.
Deeks had sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "No, I don't think they would be okay with that." He stated and grabbed her hand. "But sweetheart, can either of us really just give up the job? You're one of the only women that hold the rank that you do in NCIS, and being a cop for me is just as important as breathing."
"But what's more important Marty?" Kensi had asked and bit her bottom lip. "Is holding a high rank more important than being safe for our children? And I have no doubt at all that you would willingly give up every breath in your body if it meant keeping the kids safe."
"I would." Deeks had agreed.
Kensi had squeezed his hand and leaned her head against his shoulder. "We have three amazing children and a baby that's going to join us in less than a month. Martin, I think it's time to really start thinking about what is best for our family; even if that means giving up the jobs that we both love."
Deeks hadn't said anything and Kensi hadn't pushed and had instead taken his hand and led him to their bedroom where she curled up next to him.
Neither of them had slept that night.
Now a couple days later and the day before the official adoption of the kids, Deeks found himself on his laptop looking at different law firms that were looking for people that had his skill level.
He couldn't picture Kensi doing anything but working for NCIS, and he would never ask her too. And to be honest, he had worked just as hard to become a lawyer as he had to become a cop. Another pro to him switching jobs back to being a lawyer was that with his experience, skill and just a couple of courses and some training, he could go from being a public defender to being a child advocate lawyer. He could still help those that he had always wanted to help, the children that are in bad situation. Situations like the one that he had been in until he had shot his father so many years ago.
"What are you looking at?" Kensi asked, her stomach entering the room before her.
Deeks had learned the very painful way, that it wasn't good to point this fact out to her. Apparently pregnant woman were very touchy and joking about their stomach preceding them into a room was not something any sane man should ever do.
"I'm looking at law firms that I can apply for." Deeks stated and looked over at her. "What you said the other night was correct. We do need to start thinking about our family more."
"Deeks, I was emotional and upset that night." Kensi ran a hand soothingly over the back of his neck.
"Maybe," Deeks nodded. "But you were right. It would not be fair to the kids if one of us died. Going back to being a lawyer wouldn't be terrible and with some time and effort, I could become an advocate lawyer for children instead. I'd still be making a difference in the lives of those that need help and it isn't that much different than being a cop. I would pull long hours and wouldn't be working with you and the team, but it would add more stability to our family in the sense of safety."
Kensi bit her bottom lip and sat in a chair next to the computer desk and rubbed a hand over her belly.
"I've been looking at different jobs too." She admitted. "I just…I haven't found anything yet."
"Kensi," Deeks reached over and took her hand. "I don't expect you too."
"Deeks if you're going to give up your job for our family then it's only fair and right for me to do the same." Kensi shook her head. "I've just been with NCIS for so long that it's going to take me a while to find something worth doing."
"You have time." Deeks said, knowing that once Kensi put her mind to something, there was no getting her to back off or change her decision. "I have a couple interviews coming up so I'm going to have to tell Hetty what's going on and what I'm planning."
"When is your first interview?" Kensi asked and chewed on her bottom lip a bit.
She knew that they were both doing what was best for their children, but it still felt abnormal to even fathom taking up jobs different than what they currently held.
"The first one is tomorrow afternoon." Deeks ran a hand down the back of his neck. "Then I have one set up for the day after we adopt the kids."
"Okay." Kensi said. "After you have your interviews, I'll talk to Hetty and see if there is something that I can do that will keep me with the team but take me out of the field."
"Maybe you could become an intelligence analyst and work with Nell and Eric." Deeks suggested and pulled her towards him so that she sat in his lap.
"It won't be the same without you though." Kensi pointed out and let out a small sigh when Deeks hand started to rub soothing circles on her belly.
They both smiled when the baby gave a quick kick against its daddy's hand.
"Let's not make any final decisions until this one is born, okay?" Deeks said.
"That sounds like a good idea." Kensi agreed and placed her hand over Deeks before she leaned into him and closed her eyes in content.
