"What?" I gasped, completely in shock. No way! Was he serious? He must be serious because his face looks serious and OH MY GOD he's serious. I felt my eyes go wide and Chris was completely still beside me - it wasn't that I wasn't happy, because I was, but all this time I was sure there was just one baby, and now there was TWO? oh wow.
"Yes, it's twins" He confirmed, giving a small smile and putting all the sonogram equipment beck in place.
"Well I'll just give you two a minute" He said, obviously seeing our flabbergasted faces. He excused himself from the room, nodding to us both and Chris and I were left in silence. As Chris hadn't moved or even said a word I turned around and looked up at him and he was just like a statue - body rigid, mouth slack, his hand tightening on my shoulder.
"Chris?" I prodded, "You okay?" And his shocked eyes slid toward mine. For a moment I thought he may faint right then and there but he broke out into a heart fluttering smile and lifted me off the bed, spinning around gleefully.
"We're having twins" He exclaimed, smiling like a Cheshire cat as he clung to me and I had to smile at his joy. Maybe we didn't plan to have two... well really we didn't even plan to have one but just seeing how happy it made Chris made me forget all my worries about the expense, housing and even college funds because we were happy and that was all that mattered.
When we orbed back to the manor the sound of the sisters and Victor laughing echoed in my ears as we walked into the sitting-room. Victor had Chris on his lap, smiling as Chris gurgled and laughed, playing with his grandpa's car keys. The three sisters looked on amused, cups of coffee placed in their hands. A sudden sickness welled up in my stomach - obviously the babies didn't like orbing - and I rolled my eyes - oh for goodness sake... wasn't the morning sickness supposed to be over by now?
"Hey Chris" I said, grabbing his arm, halting him before he could alert his family to our presence, "You go on, break the happy news because I'm pretty sure the morning sickness is coming back" I warned, wrapping an arm around my stomach.
"You sure?" He whispered, tenderly moving some stray hair from my face.
"Yeah" I nodded, "Just gimme a minute" I said, and disappeared into the bathroom without a second thought.
"Chris" Mom beamed, alerting everyone to my presence, "How did it go?" She asked and I watched as grandpa looked up at with me proud eyes and I couldn't help but smile.
"Good... really good actually" I muttered, sitting down beside grandpa and looking on at... me! God, it was so weird looking at myself but I suppose I had to get used to it, after all, we were going to be living here for at least another five months.
"Chris, I gotta admit, I was a little shocked when your mother told me what was going on" He smiled, showing his teeth and I chuckled.
"Yeah, I can imagine, those lot were the same" I told him, pointing to the three sisters who just rolled their eyes in response.
"So when am I going to meet her? You're not that embarrassed by me that you're keeping her hidden are you?" Grandpa chuckled light-heartedly.
"Nah, the morning sickness is back is all - I guess the babies don't like orbing, which is weird considering their bloodline" I mused, seeing who would realise what I said first. It took a few seconds but Paige's head snapped up, her expression comical.
"Babies?" She asked, nudging my mom who's face went slack when she realised what I had said too, "Babies? As in plural? More than one?" Paige asked and Phoebe leaned forward, a smile on her face and grandpa, well... it looked like he was about to faint right then and there.
"Yeah" I grinned, unable to contain my excitement any longer, "Jade's pregnant with twins" And almost immediately the place was filled with shrieks of excitement - mostly from Phoebe because she was the shrieking type after all. Yeah, this day was, by far, one of the best.
"I really don't get it" I exclaimed, trying to wrap my head around why on earth anybody, anybody, would willingly eat that. Even in the future where there wasn't exactly gourmet options available, that would still be the last thing people would try.
Jade rolled her eyes, pulling me down on the couch.
"Honestly Chris, for the millionth time.. cravings" She said calmly, biting into the gherkin that was piled high with ketchup a drizzling of honey! Seriously? What the hell?
"Still" I muttered, shivering and Jade slapped my chest as I got comfortable next to her.
"Oh shut it you" She laughed, dipping her finger into the sauces and placing it in my unexpected mouth, "Try it, you'll love it" She promised - well, it was a bit late for that now. I cringed, gagging slightly as I did so.
"Yup, just as I thought... disgusting" I told her, Trying to get the horrid taste from my mouth.
"Oh this isn't half as bad as the little concoction I made earlier - ice cream, layered with mustard with choc chips" She grinned and I just shook my head in exasperation, smiling playfully.
"Eh, at least now there will be no left overs" I smirked and Jade laughed as I pulled her legs up, resting them over my own.
After a little while Mom decided it would be a good idea to put on a video - still getting used to that even. It just seemed so... old - before Wyatt turned evil there was blu ray DVD players, 3D printers, even 3D TV's and high speed printers... everything was just so slow - and I could tell Jade agreed but she smiled and nodded politely.
About halfway through the film Jade looked up at me, smirking, eyes bright.
"Imagine showing them real technology, how funny would that be?" She giggled as the basic telly hummed quietly.
"They probably wouldn't believe it, and then Phoebe would probably try and steal it to make her job easier" I smirked and Jade bit her lip, leaning forward and suddenly capturing mine. I responded eagerly, holding her close to me in the dim lighting of the sitting room, running my hands through her silky smooth hair. Jade moaned quietly, holding the nape of my neck and arching her back.
"Hey guys, this is a fantasy film... not a porno" Phoebe whispered loudly, grinning from ear to ear as Jade and I broke apart.
Jade just laughed lightly, resting her head on my chest and sighing contently. Seriously, could my life get any better?
By the end of the film most of my family were either dozing or extremely tired, Jade being one of them who was conked out, arms wrapped around my torso as she slept on and I could tell she was in a deep sleep by the way her lips were parted ever so slightly, letting out small breaths of air that tickled my neck. Not wanting to disrupt her I gently picked her up, adjusting her position and nodded to my family on the way out of the sitting room, falling asleep next to Jade less than five minutes later.
I was in a nice deep sleep, warm and comfy when, out of nowhere, I was jolted awake by Jade gasping heavily, sitting up in bed with a frantic look on her face.
"Hey" I said urgently, pulling myself up, wiping her sweaty hair away from her face and urging her to look at me, "What happened? What's wrong?" And Jade started crying, the tears running down her face freely.
"I-I'm sor-r-r-ry" She gasped, trying to wipe away the tears, "Just n-n-nightmares" She stuttered, her bottom lip quivering and I frowned, wrapping an arm around her waist.
"About what?" I asked gingerly, holding her close.
"M-My family" Was all she said before biting her lip to stop from breaking out into fresh sobs and burying her head into my chest. I winced sympathetically - Wyatt had killed her mom, dad, brother and sister, not long after her fifteenth birthday, and I remembered the day like it was yesterday.
"No" Jade screamed, falling to her knee's, hyperventilating as she clung her mom's body close to her, "No, no, no, please" She sobbed, "Please don't be dead, please, I need you" She cried, tears running down her cheeks as her clothes got covered in blood.
I just stood there, feeling grief stricken, anger and pain all at the same time watching as my friend clung to her family, screaming in desperation.
"Jade, we-we have to go" I muttered, blinking away the tears as I saw their lifeless faces staring up at me, almost in accusation like 'Why didn't you save us Chris? Wyatt is your responsibility'
"NO" Jade sobbed, "No...no... please don't leave me...Mommy? Please..." She gasped for breath before slumping forward in defeat.
I shook myself from that vision and just lay down with her, holding her close, "It's okay, It's okay... I'm here" I soothed, tightening my grip as her shuddering stopped and the tears dried on her face.
I left Jade sleeping the next morning, knowing she needed it as she was awake almost half the night, unable to sleep, plagued by the horrors of her nightmares. When it got to mid morning I heard the bedroom door open quietly and looked up from reading the book of shadows and saw Jade emerging from the bedroom, pale as a ghost and shaking ever so slightly.
"Hey, are you feeling better?" I asked in concern, closing the book and standing up, my heart racing at her terrified look. Jade blanched, looking around in confusion, wrapping her arms around herself.
"Who are you?" She demanded, "Where am I? What am I doing here? And who the hell am I?" She demanded and my jaw went slack at her confession... what?
