Chapter 46
Shadow POV
I stared up at the man standing over me. I couldn't believe my eyes, it was really him. He was just as I remember him. Shaggy brown hair and bright green eyes, he stood tall a proud a bright blue shirt with black jeans. He was the only whitecoat I knew that dressed as if this was everyday activity. Of course he had a white lab coat on.
"How are you feeling Princess? You took quite the beating" He said then frowned, "And why are you restrained. God these people are idiots" He leaned over me and undid the straps restraining my wrists then moved and undid my ankles. Wincing I slowly sat up.
"I don't remember much of what happened" I exclaimed, "After I got my wings ripped…" I suddenly gasped remembering and reached behind me feeling around for my wings. But they weren't, they weren't there.
"To many tendons in your back were ripped as well as nerves, your wings weren't able to be recovered" He explained softly setting a hand on my shoulder. "Everything's going to be ok alright?" I could feel my shoulders starting to shake and the tears starting to roll down my cheeks.
My wings, what was I going to do without them? I had grown my entire life with wings. I used them to escape places like this, to travel, to just get away from everything. The wings were part of who I was. How was I suppose to travel with the flock if I ever got back to them?
"Listen, I'm doing what I can to see about getting a new pair hooked onto you alright? They'll be better than the last pair" I sighed wiping a tear from my eye.
"I don't want a new pair. I want my wings, the wings I've had since the day I was born!" I shouted, "I've never asked you for anything in my entire life, now I beg of you for one thing I need my wings back!" He held a finger over my lips and sighed.
"Your wings don't define who you are Shadow. Your actions do, you're a survivor and a caring person. That's what defines who you are and what you will become" I sighed and looked away.
"You're right Talon, I don't need my wings to survive" He smiled and ruffled my hair before gently pushing me back down on the lab table.
"Now I want you to listen closely and understand that this needs to be done" I slowly nodded, "The Scientist are going to perform a type of surgery on you that's going to reactivate one of your powers. When you were younger you could move objects with your mind, do you remember that. All the games we played?" And oddly enough I did.
Flash Back!
A 3 year old Shadow sat quiet in a chair in the middle of the room. A table in front of her sat several small bouncy balls, some marbles, and a large pillow. Shadow kicked her feet nervously as the door behind her opened.
Zak walked in a smile on his face. This was one of his favorite daily activities, after all Shadow was one of his favorite expirements.
"Alright Princess, can you do what we did yesterday with the ball?" He asked slowly moving a blue bouncy ball into Shadow's line of sight. She slowly nodded and turned towards the ball. Instantly it rose into the air and flew across the room into the wall.
"Excellent, Now Red" Shadow did the same with the red ball, then the green, then the yellow. "Now the pillow" Shadow's fists clenched as a small pain in her head flickered. But she would do anything if it meant these whitecoats would let her go back to her brother.
The pillow lifted off the table unsteadily and was thrown to the wall behind her. Zak eagerly nodded and scribbled down notes on a clipboard.
"Are we done yet?" Shadow asked, her voice more of a high squeak. Normally this would be the end of the test, but Zak had other ideas.
"No not yet sweetie, almost" He exclaimed, "I want to see if we un-strap you if you can move the table. Can you do that for me?" Shadow frowned watching Zak as he un-strapped her wrists letting her stand up. "Go ahead"
Shadow pressed her fingers to her temples and closed her eyes. Suddenly the table began to shake and lift off the ground slightly.
"That's amazing! Higher!" Shadow flinched at the sudden forcefulness of his voice but did as she was told. The table lifted higher almost four feet in the air
Suddenly everything changed. The table flew and slammed roughly into the wall shattering. The chair she had been sitting in launched itself backwards shattering threw the window that the other whitecoats had been watching her threw.
"Shadow Stop!" Zak screamed, but Shadow couldn't control it anymore and the entire room seemed to shake as everything moved and flung rapidly around.
Then as if it hadn't happened everything suddenly stopped and slammed into the floor. Even Shadow herself collapsed to the floor. Her head was pounding and all she could hear was the blood pounding
"Perfect Shadow." Zak knelt down and picked her up "Now to rest"
End Flashback
"Now there going to put you under so you don't feel it. Now rest and try to fall asleep so its easier on all of us. We don't need you thrashing again"
"I'll see you when I wake up after from surgery right?" he smiled and nodded.
"Of course princess, now lay back and rest" He picked up an oxygen mask and placed it over my face. He pressed a button on the machine and I inhaled fresh oxygen.
"Don't worry about anything just rest" I smiled and closed my eyes slowly drifting off, not even hearing the several whitecoat enter the room.
