Summary – Kagome's tired of crying for those she has lost, not that she can cry anymore anyways. An old man claiming to be a Scientist takes her in at age 5. Now 14, she is trained as an assassin, and with her Gundam by her side she lives by her own Code of Conduct. Defeat is NOT an option.

Chapter Eight

A Friend in Need...?

"Hmm hum, hmmm," Kagome hummed quietly to herself as her eyes raked over the laptop screen, her stomach gave in to the time and lack of food, growling to inform its host of its predicament. She stood up and placed the laptop on the bed, stretching, she looked over at the clock. "...I guess it is time for some food." Walking out of the room she and Duo were sharing, she heard a soft ringing coming from a small distance away and followed the sound. She glanced around a corner and found Howard holding his phone to his ear, giving a small chuckle before he called a mechanic of his over.

"Go get Duo's new friend from the bedroom they're sharing."

"I'm right here," Kagome said, stepping out from around the corner she'd been watching from. Walking over to Howard, she took the phone that he was holding out to her. "Hello?"

Duo smiled; for one reason or another, he was really happy to hear her voice. She was making him feel weird, and yet, he'd only known her for a few days. It wasn't a bad kind of weird, but it was different. He didn't mind, however. He liked hearing her speak, and liked knowing she was waiting for him to return. "Hey, I have something important to say, so I need you to listen carefully."

"...okay."

"I came across Heero, the one in the Profile compilation that you sent to my Deathscythe."

"You came across Pilot zero-one?"

"...yeah, and I may have shot him."

"What!? Duo, we only have each other...it's you me, and the other four pilots. Us against the world; we can't afford to lose potential allies. Did you kill him?"

"No...no I didn't. Both shots avoided vital organs."

"Both...? You shot him twice?!"

"...maybe? Look, listen to me. He was captured, by the Military dogs of an Alliance Hospital."

"Can you get to him?"

"I can." He fiddled with the end of his braid a bit as he looked at the building in front of him, eyeing it carefully as he watched military specialists go in and out of the building.

"...I will make sure the ship is within reach, be ready in an hour to board. Also, I'm making some pasta, does that sound good?"

Duo smiled, "Yeah, that'll do."

"Then I will see you soon, be careful Duo."

"Right! I'll see you soon." Duo hung up the phone, crossing his arms behind his head, he laughed a little bit, "Now I should go visit that 'patient'."

Kagome stared down at the cell phone before closing her eyes, "Hey, Howard?"

"Yes?"

"Can we bring the ship around the backside of the Alliance Military Sanatorium?"

"In an hour, right?"

"We need to be there before, I have a feeling Duo will be ready well before an hours up."

Howard nodded, "Right, I'll have it turned around, and we'll head over there immediately."

"Thanks, I'll start on the pasta, and hopefully when I'm done, we'll be ready for 'pick-up'."

Duo walked around the building and went to scaling the side, making his way inside through an open window; he locked the door to the room and turned the laptop on the office desk of the room he'd entered from the window. He looked through the latest records before he found what he was looking for. "Unknown name, age fifteen or sixteen, hair is brown, eyes are blue...that's our man. Everyone else has a name..." Finding the room he was placed in, he looked up the quickest route. Opening the door, he peeked through the crack before glancing up he took in the vent system and smirked; pulling a pick from his braid. Once inside he slowly, stealthily, crawled through the vent, he found the room Heero was in and quietly opened the vent door before jumping down through the hole and knocking out the Security Guard watching over him.

Hacking the computer on the other side of the wall Duo could now see him and he could see Duo. Duo's finger over his lips, he chuckled, "Ha, I see you've got no choice but to lie there. I'm sure a talented guy with your skill will be able to read my lips...Well? Can ya?"

He watched Heero close his eyes just enough so that it looked like he was asleep, but his eyelids were still cracked enough that he could read Duo's lips. He eyed him carefully, eyes sparkling, "Your acting is just amazing. Faking unconsciousness without increasing your pulse or your brain waves; I've got a few questions I'd like to ask you. If you're feeling up to it, I thought I'd help you break out of here. Well then?" Duo took a metal disc and placed it against the wall. A red light started blinking and then suddenly, there was a loud explosion. He laughed, "Time to liven' things up, buddy." He ran forward and started on freeing his could be ally, 'At least Kagome will be happy I got him out of here.' He struggled with the leather bindings,"Man, how do you get these things off?" Taking a knife from his back pocket he cut them, freeing him from his restraints. "This way." He said as both he and Heero ran towards the window. Throwing another bomb Duo watched as the window exploded and the two jumped out the window with the force of the blast. "Geronimo!"

Pressing a button on his handheld helicopter, he fell at a slow pace while the other continued falling with quickening speed. "Hey, are you crazy!? Hurry up and release your parachute. There is a girl waiting for both of us, and if I come back without you...she's not going to be very pleased with me!" Duo noticed that Heero had fallen unconscious as he fell from the eighteenth floor of the Alliance Hospital. "Oh man, are you trying to kill yourself or what?!" He yelled after Heero, but the other pilot didn't stir. "Man, I'm gonna have nightmares over this one. If this ends the way I think it will...ah, wake up!"

"HEEEEROOOO!"

"Huh?" Duo looked up at the sight of the girl who had tried to block him from shooting Heero earlier, not succeeding, mind you, but she had tried. Looking back down at Heero as he seemed to wake up at the sound of her voice, the zero-one pilot pulled the parachute release. "It's way too late now," Duo said aloud, 'uhg, I can't watch.' He turned his head away but unable to resist, Duo looked back in time to see him take the parachute off and roll down the rocky hill to his feet. Duo could see the injuries he'd sustained from the fall already forming and couldn't help but wince at the thought. When he landed he headed straight for Heero.

"Blast it; I shouldn't have released my parachute."

Duo stared at him in annoyance before walking up to him and taking his hat off. "Now I can understand you wanting to take your own life, but maybe, just maybe you should think of another way of committing suicide, buddy." Shaking his head, Duo sighed, "Look," he caught the other boy's attention, "I'm not asking you to trust me or anything," Thinking back to what Kagome said he put Heero's arm over his shoulder. "But right now, I'm the only friend you've got, pal."

"DUO!"

Everyone turned including the two women who had watched the fall. "Heh, looks like our ride's here."

Heero looked on as the ship came into view, and Duo couldn't stop the grin from appearing on his face as he caught sight of Kagome waving back and forth from her spot on the ships bridge.
