Chapter 65-The Invitation

It was just another day at Elmore Junior High, as Brian made his way to his locker, intending to get some materials for today's lessons, when the purple fox noticed a big crowd not far from where he was, leaving him quite curious what the deal was with the ruckus in the hallway.

'What's going on back there?' the purple fox thought, as he made his way towards the crowd, before spotting a certain maroon badger in the process. "Mike, do you know what's going on?"

"Masami's hosting a party and she's apparently inviting anything that's sentient." the maroon badger replied, as he stood on the outside of the crowd with an invite.

"Party? What party?" Brian asked Mike, surprised that there was a party in town to begin with.

"I don't really know to be honest." answered Mike, as he looked at the invite. "It doesn't really say why she's throwing a party. She just is."

"There's always a reason to throw a party." Brian insisted.

It was then that Gumball and Darwin arrived to meet up with their friends, showing them their invites, surprising the purple fox even more.

"Brian, check it out!" Gumball said to his friend, as he happily showed it to him.

"Masami invited us to her party!" Darwin joined in, as both brothers smiled widely.

"I thought Masami didn't really like you guys." Brian commented, surprised that the cloud actually handed them invites.

"I guess she had a change of heart." Gumball concluded.

"Regardless, I can't believe we're going to her mansion!" Darwin happily exclaimed.

"You might as well see if she'll give you an invite." Mike suggested.

"Sure, I'll give it a shot." said Brian, as shrugged his shoulders, before making his way to the cloud, as she handed another invite to the Eggheads.

"Alright then, see you guys tonight." Masami informed the two, before a certain purple fox made his presence known.

"Hey Masami," he greeted the cloud.

"Oh, hey Brian." Masami nonchalantly spoke. "What do you want?"

"Isn't it obvious? I was wondering if I can have an invite to your party." Brian replied.

"Yeah, about that...no." Masami's answer shocked the purple fox.

"Why not?!" Brian demanded an answer from her.

"Because I said so," Masami responded bluntly. "Now go away."

The cloud said that just loud enough for Brian to hear before flying off, leaving the purple fox speechless, just as Mike and the Watterson brothers approached him, both shocked and worried for his well-being.

"Brian, are you alright?" asked a concerned Darwin.

"I can't believe she would do that!" Brian angrily exclaimed.

"Honestly, if Gumball could get an invite, I don't see why you couldn't get one." Mike said as calmly as he could.

"Hey, I'm right here." Gumball said.

"It just doesn't make sense..." Brian began. "She never behaved like that during the last few months I've been here."

"Well, what are you going to do now?" Darwin asked innocently.

Brian pondered for a moment, not answering the two-legged fish's question, until an idea came to mind, causing him to grin mischievously.

"I guess I'm going to invite myself in, if you guys know what I mean." Brian then winked his eye at his friends. It didn't take the three too long to realize what he had in mind.

"You plan on crashing Masami's party?" a shocked Gumball asked.

"I have to admit, that's quite reckless of you." Darwin added.

"Why don't you use that as a last resort and instead try and actually get legitimately invited." Mike suggested.

"How would I do that, Mike?" Brian asked the maroon badger.

"Probably the same way Gumball did: have one of Masami's friends get her to give you an invite." Mike shrugged.

"I don't know, Mike..." Brian began "It seems rather complicated."

"Wow, I never expected to hear that from you." said Darwin. "Honestly, I would have expected that from Gumball."

"What is with you guys today?" Gumball groaned quietly, annoyed by his friends' remark.

"Just ask Penny or something. I'm sure she'll be happy to help." Mike suggested.

The moment the maroon badger made such a suggestion, Gumball gasped in horror by this, before he turned his attention to Mike, clearly outraged by this.

"You can't be serious, Mike! Why Penny of all people?"

"Penny is arguably the nicest person in our class. She wouldn't turn down a friend in need." Mike argued.

"Also Gumball, I only consider Penny a friend, and in case you forgot, I'm dating Rhonda." Brian pointed out.

"Oh yeah, that's right." Gumball sheepishly responded, before rubbing his head.

"If you're so concerned about Penny, why don't you just ask her out?" Darwin suggested.

"You know what; I think I'll do just that." Gumball spoke with confidence in his voice.

"And this party is perfect for that." said Mike. "So why don't we go see her now Gumball, so you can ask her after we get Brian's invite."

"That's not what I had in mind." Gumball muttered, before he and his friends made their way to class, not wanting to get another hour of detention.

The afternoon had arrived, as everyone left their classrooms and made their way to the cafeteria. As soon as the four were finished with their meals, they set off to find Penny; fortunately, they didn't have to search too long, as Brian, Mike and the Watterson brothers spotted her sitting alongside Leslie at the schoolyard, most likely talking about Masami's party.

'Here goes nothing.' Brian thought, as he and his friends made their way to the two.

"Hey Penny. Hey Leslie." the four greeted them.

"Hey guys, how's your day?" Penny asked the four.

"It's going great!" Gumball replied with a love-struck tone, before Mike bopped him on the head.

"OW! What was that for?!" he demanded.

Mike ignored the blue feline's question, however, as he focused his attention on the antlered peanut.

"Brian is kind of in the toilet. He's the only person not invited to Masami's party."

"Why would she do that?" Penny asked the maroon badger, surprised that the cloud didn't give him an invitation.

"We're just as clueless as you are, Penny." Darwin replied, prompting Brian to give Penny an explanation.

"Masami flat out said she didn't invite me because she could, though she invited everyone else like it was no big deal."

Once the purple fox was done explaining to them of his situation, both she and her cousin were genuinely surprised by this.

"I know Masami has her faults, but that's low even for her." Leslie commented.

"So can you convince her to get me an invite please?" Brian asked nicely to the antlered peanut.

Penny didn't respond right away, as she began to ponder for a moment, while the purple fox looked on, rather desperate at this point. Eventually, after a minute or two, she turned her attention to Brian, as if she had come up with a solution.

"I think I can come up with something." Penny replied. "But just promise me that you won't get mad with what I had in mind."

"Why do I have a feeling this will be needlessly complex?" Darwin quietly asked.

"Because you live in Elmore." Mike jokingly replied.

"At this point, I'll do anything." Brian said to the antlered peanut.

"Alright, if you say so." Penny then took a deep breath before speaking once more. "You see..."

It was the evening at Masami's mansion, as everyone who received an invite were making their way to the place, each of them dressed up formally for the occasion, including Brian, Mike, the Watterson brothers, Penny and Leslie. But for the purple fox, he was hardly happy about his situation; somehow, he was convinced by the antlered peanut to go incognito as Brianna Fitzgerald, her second cousin twice-removed; to add insult to injury, he was forced to wear a black dress and put on some make-up to appear more feminine. Needless to say, the purple fox was not happy one bit.

"This is not what I had in mind!"

"There was no other way, Brian…" Penny began to explain. "I had to come up with something to convince Masami to hand out another invite."

"Plus, do you know how hard it is to satisfy her? Be glad she was convinced by the story we crafted." Leslie scolded Brian.

"On the other hand, you sure make a good girl." Gumball jokingly commented.

"We'll be there if you need anything, ma'am." Darwin added, before he and his brother snickered.

While the others were somewhat amused by Brian's predicament, Mike, on the other hand, was not impressed for another reason.

"Why is it a formal gathering? Screw this, I'm going home!" Mike shouted, before walking away.

But before he could have a chance to make it to the exit, the maroon badger felt a hard grip on his shoulder, as Mike turned around and saw Gumball stopping him in his tracks.

"Wait a minute Mike. What about Brian? If Masami finds out he's here, he'll be in trouble."

"And this requires me how?" Mike asked questionably.

"I know! Pretend you're dating Brian's alter ego for tonight." Darwin replied.

His suggestion was met with skepticism from both Brian and Mike.

"You cannot be serious." the purple fox disagreed with the two-legged fish's suggestion.

"No! I have standards! There are things that I will not do and this is one of them!" the maroon badger yelled at Gumball and Darwin.

Before the brothers could argue with Mike, Penny spoke up first, as the maroon badger began to hear her out.

"Mike, this is only going to be one night. At the very least, please do this for me." the antlered peanut pleaded to the maroon badger.

"Have Darwin do it for you!" Mike pleaded, clearly not wanting to go through with this.

"Sorry Mike, but I asked Rachel out." Darwin admitted to the angry maroon badger, prompting Mike to shout at the top of his lungs to show his aggravation.

"Don't be such a drama queen, Mike." Leslie said flatly. "Just get this over with."

"Like we have a choice." Brian grudgingly muttered.

"I hate you...I hate you all..." Mike grumbled as he followed everyone to the mansion, before the purple fox informed the maroon badger.

"When this is over, we will NOT speak of this again."

"Agreed."

The seven made their way inside the mansion and unsurprisingly, it was quite packed, as all of the kids in town were in attendance having the time of their lives. Brian and his friends were amazed by the festivities that were taking place within the mansion.

"Wow, so this is how Masami lives." Brian muttered with astonishment.

"I have to admit, Masami sure knows how to set up a good party." Gumball added.

"Though I think making it a formal party was a bit overdoing it." Darwin admitted, as he fixed his bow tie.

"Tell me about it..." Mike began. "I can't get used to this tie."

"Well we should all try and enjoy ourselves!" Penny said happily.

"Penny's right, we just need to relax and mellow out." Leslie agreed with his cousin.

"Well if you need me, I'm going to raise trouble for people that annoy me." Mike said as he walked away.

Everyone else looked at each other and decided to do the same thing, as the six split up, trying to have some fun and relax for the moment. Brian, however, was both cautious and weary, determined to keep his vigilance up, not wanting to drop his guard at any given moment.

'As long as you don't bump into anyone from school, everything will be alright.'

But in the midst of his own thoughts, the purple fox accidentally bumped right into Tobias and Banana Joe at the serving table. Quickly startled by this, he decided to come up with the only solution to his problem.

"Sorry about that, you guys." Brian spoke with the best girly voice, before he quickly walked away from them.

"Did you know that girl?" Joe asked Tobias.

"No... Probably another one of Masami's friends that no one knows about but her." Tobias replied shrugging his shoulders.

"Makes sense to me." Joe agreed, before the two resumed getting food from the table.

Taking Mike's advice to heart, Gumball quickly lead his crush to the nearest balcony, wanting to have some private time between themselves, in order to give himself the opportunity he needed to make Penny his girlfriend, no matter what.

"So Penny, what do you want to do?" Gumball shyly asked the antlered peanut, as the two were standing out in the balcony, staring at the stars in the sky. But the blue feline was beyond nervous, he was silently panicking, worried that tonight would lead to another awkward moment, just like all of his previous attempts.

"The sky is so beautiful..." Penny remarked as she stared at the star-dotted sky.

"Not as beautiful as you are..." Gumball quietly spoke to the antlered peanut.

"Did you say something?" Penny asked the blue feline.

"No, nothing!" Gumball regrettably denied.

"Alright then." said Penny, a bit weirded out by Gumball's behavior, before staring back at the sky.

'Oh man! I really need to man up and tell her how I feel.' Gumball thought to himself, not wanting to ruin this opportunity.

Brian didn't know how long he's been at Masami's mansion, but he couldn't care less about time. Right now, he was mellowing down and having a great time, as the purple fox grabbed a few appetizers from the serving table, savoring every bite.

'So far, everything's going okay so far. Aside from being forced into this get up, I say I managed to avoid any awkward moments.'

But just then, the purple fox heard a familiar set of stomps heading towards him, much to his dismay, as he turned and saw Tina staring at him, arching an eyebrow in curiosity.

"Who are you?" Tina asked the frightened purple fox, prompting him to come up with a quick answer.

"My name is Brianna and I'm new around here." Brian bashfully replied.

"Is that so?" Tina asked once more, before smiling. "Well, in that case, welcome to Elmore, Brianna."

Brian could let out a sigh of relief, happy that he was able to defuse the situation.

'I guess Tina is only nice to other girls. That's good to know.' Brian thought, as he walked away from the carnivore.

But his relief was short-lived, as the purple fox accidentally bumped into a certain cloud. much to his dismay.

"What the-? Who are you?" Masami demanded.

"My name is Brianna Fitzgerald, Penny's second cousin twice removed." Brian quickly replied, uncertain whether this quick response was enough to please the cloud.

"...Oh, so you're the one Penny talked about and wanted to invite." Masami finally spoke, becoming suddenly pleasant to the purple fox. "Well I hope you're enjoying yourself!"

With that, the cloud floated away, as Brian could only sigh with relief.

"That was a close one. I really need to be more careful."

Shortly after splitting up from the rest of the group, Darwin managed to spot Rachel at the entrance. As soon as he made his way to her, he stopped dead in his tracks and couldn't believe what he seeing: instead of her usual attire, Rachel let her hair flow down, wearing a pair of long white sleeve gloves and a beautiful red dress. Needless to say, Darwin was quite speechless by this.

"Sorry it took a while to come here Darwin. Traffic was such a pain." Rachel explained to the two-legged fish.

"Oh, don't worry Rachel; I'm just happy you're here." Darwin assured the blue humanoid, causing her to blush.

"Thanks Darwin. Anyway, what do you have in mind?"

"We can just talk and hang out." Darwin replied.

"You know, I actually like the sound of that." Rachel agreed with him.

Happy to hear this, Darwin led Rachel to another section of the mansion, just wanting to have a moment between them.

While Darwin and Rachel were spending time with each other, Brian, meanwhile, was doing his best to avoid any unnecessary attentions, wanting to keep a low profile as best as he could.

"Alright Brian, you can do this." the purple fox said to himself. "All I have to do is mind my own business and not cause any more awkward moments."

But Brian would soon regret his words, however, as he ended up bumping into Bobert, allowing the robot to survey the mortified purple fox.

"Scanning... Facial recognition... Brian." Bobert concluded, but luckily no one heard but Brian.

Fearing that the robot would inform every one of his presence, Brian quickly hit the button on the left side of Bobert's face, causing the robot to go into reboot mode and allowing the purple fox to quickly get away from him as fast as he could.

True to his words, Mike began to pull off a few pranks just to entertain himself, mainly aiming at those he deemed to be annoying. First, he poured in a few drops of tabasco sauce in both Tobias and Banana Joe's drinks and burst into laughter when the two ran around like complete idiots, their mouths engulfed in flames. Then, the maroon badger pulled a few pranks on Tina and Jamie, usually by throwing fake cockroaches in front of them, completely taking them by surprise. Recently, Mike popped out around the corner and scared the daylights out of Gumball, when he was coming back down from the balcony with Penny and he couldn't help but laugh at the look Gumball gave to him just now.

"I thought you were only pulling pranks on people that annoy you!" Gumball complained, annoyed that the maroon badger would do that to him in front of Penny.

"Yep." Mike said with a smirk, as he walked away.

Just then, however, Tina immediately got right in front of the maroon badger, clearly peeved by his prank.

"What do you think you're doing, stripes?" Tina asked Mike.

"I'm about to make a quick getaway." Mike quickly replied, before sliding underneath the t-rex and making a run for it. As the maroon badger laughed hysterically, he's about to make a quick turn around the corner when he ended up bumping into Brian, who was coming around the corner from the opposite direction, causing them to fall on their back, before they both got up and regained their composure.

"Oh hey Brianna." Mike plainly said to the disgruntled purple fox. "Enjoying yourself?"

"Ha ha, very funny." Brian sarcastically replied. "Seriously, I think we need to leave. I kept bumping into one too many familiar faces."

"You can leave whenever you want. No one's forcing you to stay." Mike pointed out.

Brian was about to argue back, when he noticed Tina heading right towards them, something that the maroon badger noticed right away.

"Gotta go! Later!" Mike said quickly before running away, as Tina pursued him, passing Brian along the way, as the purple fox spotted Gumball and Penny among the crowd, prompting him to make his way to them.

"Hey Brianna." Penny greeted the purple fox.

"Hi Penny." Brian greeted the antlered peanut. "Listen, I think we need to leave now."

"Are you serious, Brianna?!" Gumball exclaimed. "We can't leave now! Not until I've done it!"

"What are you talking about?" Penny asked the blue feline.

"Done what?" Brian was now trying to force an answer out of Gumball.

Gumball felt his head sweating like mad, as Brian and Penny both looked at him with suspicion.

"Um... Ah..." Gumball couldn't think of what to say now that he was put on the spot.

Just when he had no choice but to come clean with them, a certain flower showed up, saving Gumball the need to offer them an explanation.

"Hey guys!" Leslie cheerfully greeted his friends. "Enjoying yourselves, I hope?"

"Yes…yes we are. Leslie" Gumball quickly said.

"Okay..." Leslie was thrown off a bit by Gumball's quick response. "So how's everything going?"

"Terrible Leslie." Brian replied. "I kept bumping into too many familiar faces here. I'm just glad that none of them know who I really am."

"What are you saying?" Leslie asked the anxious purple fox.

"I'm thinking about leaving right now." Brian responded sheepishly.

"Then go if you want to." said Penny. "No one's forcing you to stay."

"Tell that to Gumball!" Brian retorted, as he pointed to Gumball.

Penny turned around and noticed Gumball looking at her with a dreamy look on his face, much to her confusion.

"What are you doing, Gumball?" asked the antlered peanut, snapping the blue feline back to reality, as he quickly caught himself and regained his composure.

"Oh, I was, um, thinking of something important. Yeah, that's right."

"Alright then." Penny commented, while Gumball sheepishly smiled, before a certain purple fox spoke.

"So can I leave, Gumball, or do I need to wait for something that you'll never do?" asked Brian, clearly annoyed and not enjoying staying at the party.

"Alright Brian, you don't need to be a grouch, just go then." Gumball replied.

"Thank you!" Suddenly Masami arrived before Brian could leave.

"Where do you think you're going?" the cloud asked the nervous purple fox.

"Um... Home?" Brian answered nervously.

"I don't think so, Brianna. C'mon, I got something to show you."

Before Brian could decline, he looked at the cloud, which seemed really eager and happy, prompting him to sigh before reluctantly speaking to Masami.

"Alright, I'll come with you." Brian then followed an ecstatic Masami upstairs.

"Penny, you come as well but Gumball stays down here. Girls only."

Brian could only cringe in response, realizing that the situation would not end well for him.

"Have a good time, Brianna." Gumball called out to the purple fox, before snickering.

"I hate your guts." Brian muttered under his breath.

As the girls and Brian turned to the next corner, Darwin showed up, having witness the scene just seconds ago.

"Dude, we can't let them take Brian! What if one of them figures out he's not a girl?!" Darwin said panicking.

Initially, Gumball didn't respond to the two-legged fish's question right away. Slowly but surely, however, Darwin's words sunk into the blue feline's head, before finally understanding what his brother is talking about.

"Oh my god, you're right! We can't let that happen or Brian's a goner!"

"But how are we gonna get in there?" Darwin asked.

"Maybe we can get them to come out and Brian might be able to escape in the chaos?" Gumball suggested.

"We may need Mike for this." Darwin remarked.

"And let's do it fast before it's too late." Gumball added, before the brothers searched for the maroon badger.

Brian's day has gone from bad to worse, especially when he ended in Masami's bedroom, along with Penny, Carrie, Molly, Carmen, Tina and Rachel. The carnivore, in particular, was worn out from chasing Mike and decided to take a break, while the other girls began to converse with each other, enjoying their company, while the purple fox was clearly mortified in his situation.

'Oh man! This is so not cool!' Brian thought with sheer terror. 'I really wished I didn't sneak inside Masami's mansion!'

"So Masami, while we're up here, who's watching the guests downstairs?" Penny asked.

"Don't worry about it, Penny. My mom's down there and she assured me that everything will be fine." Masami replied, assuring her friend that everything is under control.

It took them a bit longer, but Gumball and Darwin managed to track Mike down and explained to the maroon badger of Brian's situation to him. After a few minutes of listening to the Watterson brothers, Mike took a deep breath before turning his attention to them.

"You want me to cause so much mayhem to buy Brian time to escape?"

"Um yeah, that's why we turned to you." Gumball replied.

"So can you do this for Brian's sake?" Darwin pleaded with the maroon badger.

"Are you kidding? I'll do it just because this party is SO boring!" Mike said with a smile on his face. "Just give me five minutes."

"Um sure, go ahead." said Gumball.

"Distract Masami's mom, will ya?" Mike asked his friends, as he cracked his knuckles, preparing to execute his devious plans.

The Watterson brothers nodded their heads and made their way to Masami's mother, who is busying surveying the area.

"Excuse us, but we want to ask you something." Darwin said to the feminine cloud.

"What is it sweetie?" Masami's mother happily asked.

"How did you and your husband manage to afford such a place? Also, how are rainbows produced and what are your hobbies?" Gumball asked several questions to Masami's mother.

"Well, if you two must know..."

Soon, the duo began to converse with Masami's mother, unaware of what a certain maroon badger was up to.

Brian continued to listen on to the girls' conversation, each talking about one random topic whenever it was their turn, whether it was about boy bands or what kind of deals they found for clothes. The purple fox could do nothing but listen on; just wanting the night to end as quickly as possible, before he noticed that every one of them had turned their attention to him, much to his discomfort.

"So Brianna, tell us about yourself." said Masami, as she and the rest of the girls listened, while Penny became worried for Brian.

"Well, um, I like to read and um, get some fresh air every now and then. Yeah, that's right." Brian sheepishly spoke.

"I guess that sounds good." Masami stated, weirded out by the purple fox's behavior. "But what else do you do?"

Before Brian could say anything else, Penny quickly spoke up on his behalf.

"Maybe that's enough for one day, Masami. She's kind of new around town."

"Alright, fair enough." Masami reluctantly accepted, much to Brian's relief.

Just then, the girls, as well as Brian, heard the music blasting outside, causing Masami to cringe, while her friends exited her room and looked downstairs, noticing everyone was dancing and singing some karaoke songs. Excited by this, the girls decided to make their way downstairs, intending to join the rest of the guests. Brian also decided to make his way downstairs, until he noticed Masami was still in her bedroom, much to his curiosity.

"Are you okay, Masami?"

"No, I'm not alright!" Masami replied. "I can barely hear anything with that much noise!"

"Well, maybe Mike went a little too far." Brian commented, shrugging his shoulders. "Is there anything I can do?"

"Can you please close the door?" Masami requested. "Also, I can use some company."

"Sure." Brian would prefer to leave but maybe provide some form of comfort would be best.

The purple fox closed the door behind him, much to Masami's relief, before she approached the purple fox.

"Thank you so much for the help." Masami expressed her gratitude. "You know it's funny. You remind me of someone in my class."

"Oh, really now?" asked Brian, as he arched an eyebrow in curiosity.

"Yeah, though I didn't invite him to the party tonight." Masami seemed to sound regretful but Brian couldn't be sure.

"Why is that?"

"To be really honest Brianna, I didn't have enough invites with me at school. I was actually planning on giving him one when I got back home until Penny mentioned you. That and I believe he really must be mad at me for what I did this morning."

Brian was quite shocked to hear this; a part of him knew that there must be a reason for Masami's actions, but after hearing her admission, he at least understood her reasons. But then, the purple fox realized he had found himself in a dilemma of his own: he can reveal himself in front of Masami and forgive her or continue on with the act.

'Great, what do I do now?' Brian thought, uncertain of his next decision. After a minute or so of thinking, the purple fox finally found the solution to his problem.

"If he was here right now, what would you say to him?" asked the purple fox, prompting Masami to take a deep breath, before answering his question.

"I would tell him that I'm sorry for my attitude and I hope that we can remain friends."

"I'm sure that would be enough for him to forgive you." Brian assured the cloud, feeling somewhat relieved to hear this from her.

"Now let's go join the party while it's still here!" Brian suggested as they went downstairs.

"I couldn't agree more!" Masami happily said and joined in with the rest of the guests.

One hour later…

Thanks to the action of a certain maroon badger, the dance turned out to be quite an exciting adventure, as Mike spent the time messing with the volume and before long, the dance floor slowly dwindled down, until only Gumball, Penny, Darwin and Rachel were left, as the two continued to dance with one another.

"So Penny how was the dance?" Gumball nervously asked the antlered peanut.

"It actually turned out great, Gumball." Penny happily replied. "You were quite good on the dance floor."

Penny's last statement caused Gumball's face to blush.

As the two continued to happily dance with each other, Darwin and Rachel were enjoying their dance quietly, as Mike was relaxing on a couch almost asleep from the wild party he threw with Carrie floating close by, while Brian was standing alone watching over the scene.

"That was fun." said Brian, before the cloud spoke up.

"Brianna thanks for listening to me. I'm glad you stuck around to hear what I had to say. It was rather refreshing for a change."

"Anytime Masami." Brian accepted the cloud's words and smiled, in spite of today turning out quite differently than he had imagined.

Tidbits

-It's the first time that Masami had a role in this story since "The Project" chapters and it turned out quite better than I thought.

I wanted to thank Sal for his help on this chapter.

I hope everyone enjoyed reading The Invitation and I'll see ya next chapter!
