Chapter 71-The Guests
For Gordon and Annie, they were having a very lovely dinner, having the whole house for just themselves, as their son was spending time at the Watterson residence and having a fun time at their place, just like they were doing right now, having finished setting up the table and beginning to eat dinner.
"We need to do this more often, dear." Gordon suggested.
"I was thinking the same thing as well, hon." Annie agreed. "I wish this moment would last forever."
Agreeing with his wife, both of them sat down at the table and were about to take a bite when the doorbell rang, much to the wolf's dismay.
'There goes my dream.' Gordon thought, as he got up from his seat and made his way to the front door. But when he opened it, he was stunned to find a certain, large rabbit standing in front of him, carrying two large suitcases with both hands.
"Hi Gordon, sorry for bothering you, but I was wondering if I can come in and stretch out for a moment."
"Um, sure, I guess." Gordon spoke with uncertainty, as he allowed Richard inside, before Nicole suddenly popped up out of nowhere, causing him to yelp in response, carrying her own suitcase.
"Hello Gordon. I apologize for the intrusion, but my family needs to stay at your place for the moment."
Before the wolf could say anything else, the older, blue feline let herself in like it was nothing, much to his confusion, before his wife showed up, curious that her husband didn't return to the dining room right away.
"Hon, what's going on?" asked Annie, before she turned around and saw Richard and Nicole, as the couple waved their hands at them. "Is there something that you're not telling me?"
"I swear, Annie, I have no idea what's going on." Gordon adamantly insisted.
Before the older, purple fox could ask him any further questions, Gumball, Darwin and Anais entered the house in a rush, causing Gordon to spin around like a tornado before Annie stopped him dead in his tracks, as he tried to regain his composure from the children's unexpected actions.
"Wow, this is going to be awesome!" Gumball proclaimed.
"Yeah, I can't believe we're going to spend one whole weekend here!" Darwin added with excitement.
"I just hope I can watch a new episode of Daisy the Donkey tomorrow." Anais said with concern.
As the Watterson siblings discussed with one another about their day, both Gordon and Annie looked on, dumbfounded how their day was turning out for them. Why did the entire Watterson family show up unannounced? What were they talking about? And whose bright idea was it to bring them here without asking for permission?
"Hey there, mom and dad." a certain young, purple fox greeted them, as the couple turned around and saw Brian looking at them rather nervously. Slowly, but surely, they were able to piece the puzzle together enough for them to realize that their son had something to do with this.
"Care to explain to us what's going on?" Gordon asked the young, purple fox.
"And you better have a good reason for this." Annie added, demanding an explanation from her son as well.
Brian didn't respond to their demands right away, as he rubbed his head sheepishly and his eyes darted away from them. Eventually, after a minute or so, the young, purple fox took a deep breath before finally answering them.
"You see, it began shortly after I left school..."
Five minutes later...
"...And that's how it happened."
Once Brian was done with his story, both Gordon and Annie looked at their son. From what they were told, the Watterson residence was being fumigated due to a mold infestation. But what really upset them is that their son convinced the Watterson family to stay at their place without consulting with them about this.
"Brian, I don't mind that you're helping your friends out, but you should have talked to us about this sooner." Gordon berated his son.
"Your dad's right. If you would have just talked to us about this, we wouldn't be this upset right now." Annie stated.
"You're right; I should have told you two when I had the chance." Brian agreed with his parents. "But it's only for the weekend and at the very least, we should treat the Watterson family with respect."
The couple pondered for a moment, thinking of what their son just said. Even though Brian should have told them about this earlier, they also felt obliged to help the Watterson's out. After all, they are friends with them and friends should stick with each other in times of crisis.
With that in mind, the two turned to face the Watterson's, who by then have sat on the couch and had no doubt listened in on their conversations.
"Alright, you guys can stay here." Gordon informed them, much to their joy.
"In fact, let us help you set your living arrangements up." Annie added.
"Thank you so much, you guys!" Richard happily exclaimed, as he gave the couple a very tight hug.
"No...problem!" the wolf blurted out, he and his wife gasping for air.
"Don't worry, you two, we'll be on our best behavior." Nicole assured the couple.
'For our sakes, I hope so.' the older, purple fox thought.
Two hours later...
After setting up the living arrangements for the Watterson's to adjust to (as well as giving them some of their dinner), everyone brushed their teeth, got dressed in their pajamas and went to bed for the evening, with Richard, Nicole and Anais sleeping in the guest room, Gordon and Annie sleeping in their bedroom and Gumball and Darwin beginning to settle down in Brian's bedroom, both overjoyed that they're spending the entire night at the O'Quinn residence.
"Brian, this is the greatest thing to ever happen to us!" the blue feline happily informed the purple fox, as he settled inside his sleeping bad.
"Yeah, it was very nice of you to let us stay here for the weekend." the two-legged fish thanked his friend, before squeezing himself into his fishbowl.
"Don't mention it. I was glad I could help out." Brian assured the brothers. "Anyway, good night you two."
"Good night, Brian!" Gumball and Darwin simultaneously responded.
With that, the three closed their eyes and intended to get a good night's rest; shortly afterwards, though, the purple fox's eyes opened up in surprise, as he heard snoring out of nowhere, prompting him to look at his friends to see that they were sleeping rather peacefully, much to his confusion.
'That was weird.' Brian thought, before he closed his eyes once more to rest. Unfortunately, this was short-lived, as the purple fox's eyes opened once more, as the snoring got much louder this time around. It didn't take him too long to realize where the snoring came from.
'Seriously, Mr. Watterson?! You have to be this loud?!' Brian thought in annoyance, as he used his pillows to cover his ears.
Unfortunately for him, this proved to be ineffective against Richard's snoring, as the large, pink bunny continued to snore much louder than usual; likewise, his parents also attempted to deafen the noise by wearing earmuffs, but this too proved to be ineffective as well, as the large, pink bunny's snoring somehow managed to penetrate them, much to their chagrin.
'This is going to be a long night.' Gordon thought with dismay, as him, his wife and son did their best to ignore the very loud snoring, all the while hoping that they can get through the entire night.
Saturday had finally arrived, but for the O'Quinn family, their morning turned out to be anything but pleasant. Ever since last night, the three were unable to get a good night rest, thanks to Richard's snoring, as they felt very tired and groggy the moment they woke up, barely staying up to make it to the kitchen on time. By contrast, the Wattersons themselves were upbeat, energetic and looking forward to another day, none of them affected by the large, punk bunny's snoring from last night, as all five made their to the kitchen as well.
"Good morning!" Gumball and Darwin simultaneously greeted the O'Quinns.
"Define 'good'." Brian grumpily demanded, much to the brothers' confusion.
"Someone is rather cranky this morning." Darwin noted, oblivious of what had occurred last night.
"Forgive us if we're not in a good mood, Darwin..." Gordon began, as he yawned and stretched his arms out. "But none of us could sleep because of your father's snoring."
"Sorry about that. I didn't mean for any of that to happen." Richard apologized.
"It's alright, Richard. Apology accepted." Annie assured the large, pink bunny. "But maybe you should do something about your snoring when you get the chance."
"Right now, let's just get some breakfast to get this morning off to a good start." Nicole suggested.
Agreeing with the older, blue feline's last statement, everyone got their breakfast and sat at the table to chow down. Anais, however, took her meal with her and made her way to the living room, as she sat on the couch, grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, just in time to see a new episode of Daisy the Donkey.
"Welcome to a new episode of Daisy the Donkey! You're just in time for my greatest adventure yet!"
The child prodigy couldn't help but cheer with joy, as she munched on her cereal and watched her favorite show.
Twenty five minutes later...
Anais continued to watch the latest episode of Daisy the Donkey, watching every scene of her favorite character in her latest adventure, up until near the end, where the donkey found herself in perilous danger, as she was clinging on the edge of a cliff for dear life, much to the child prodigy's horror.
'Oh no! Please make it out of there in time, Daisy!'
Anais grabbed hold of the nearest pillow, watching the show with serious intent, wondering how her favorite mascot would get herself out of this mess, as her fingers slowly began to lose their grip. But just when it appeared that Daisy the Donkey might meet her doom, the screen suddenly went black, much to the child prodigy's horror.
"Aah! What just happened?!" she shouted with horror, before quickly turning her gaze towards a nervous Gordon, as well as noticing the unplugged cord right next to his feet. It didn't take her too long to realize what had occurred.
"I'm so sorry Anais. It was an accident, I swear." Gordon apologized to the dismayed little girl.
"Plug it back in right now!" Anais frantically demanded, prompting the started grey wolf to comply right away, as he put in the TV plug, as the screen lit up once again, only to show Sally the Snake, one of Daisy's friends.
"That was such an amazing episode! I'm sorry to say this, but we won't be airing an encore presentation until next year! Until then, see you next time!"
The moment Sally the Snake made her statement, Anais sat on the couch, her eyes widened in shock and disbelief, while Gordon cautiously approached the shocked little girl.
"Um, Anais, are you alright?"
The child prodigy didn't respond to the concerned wolf's question right away; eventually, after a few seconds of silence, Anais let out the biggest scream in the house, prompting Gordon to cover his ears, just as Brian, as well as Gumball and Darwin, rushed downstairs to the living room.
"Dad, what's going on?!" Brian shouted, before turning around to saw a startled Anais screaming. "Why is she behaving like that?!"
"I accidentally unplugged the TV and when I plugged it back in, her show was already done!" Gordon replied.
"Oh man, this is not good!" Gumball shouted. "Anais is always like this is she misses any part of Daisy the Donkey!"
"Or anything related to it!" Darwin added. "I just wish Mrs. Mom wasn't at the supermarket with Mr. Dad and Mrs. O'Quinn."
"Are you saying that we have to wait for your mom to come back to calm your sister down?!" Brian asked in disbelief.
"Unfortunately Brian, yes." Gumball replied, causing the purple fox to groan, as he, his dad and his friends covered their ears, trying to bear with the frightened child prodigy and just praying that Nicole shows up as quickly as possible.
The trip to the supermarket didn't turn out to be a very good one for Annie, Nicole and Richard, as their simple errands took them much longer than it should have. Upon their arrival, both Nicole and Richard were arguing about what kind of food they should bring home, with the large, pink bunny wanting to bring some snacks, while the older, blue feline insisted on bringing some fruits and vegetables instead. As if that was bad enough, Annie found herself in the middle of another argument, as Nicole was feuding with the Lizard Woman over the latest sale, prompting the older, purple fox to break them up and convince the latter to find a better sale in the supermarket. Finally, on their way out, the trio found themselves in front of a very long line, prompting Nicole to force her way to the cash register, much to Annie's dismay.
Now here she was, back at home and for once, all she wanted to do is just get some rest, wanting to forget the entire ordeal as soon as possible.
'At least now I can catch a break and just do some yoga while I'm at it.' Annie thought, as she opened the front door, before being greeted by a loud, piercing scream, causing her to fall on her back, before quickly covering her ears, just as Richard and Nicole quickly came to their friend's aid.
"Annie, are you alright?!" the large, pink bunny shouted with concern.
"I'm fine Richard, but why is your daughter screaming all of a sudden?!" the older, purple fox demanded, before she noticed Richard and his wife looking at each other, as if they were familiar with something like this.
"I got this." said Nicole, before she dashed her way to the living room to see her sons, their friend and Gordon still covering their ears, as she approached her frightened daughter.
"Anais, I need you to listen to me as clearly as you can. I'm sorry that you missed out on the latest episode of Daisy the Donkey but don't worry, I managed to record today's episode before we left the house. You can watch the rest when we get back to the house."
The moment Nicole finished her sentence, the child prodigy immediately calmed down and looked at her mother, her eyes widening in delight and smiling ecstatically in the process.
"Alright mom. Thanks."
With that, Anais got off of the couch, clutching her Daisy the Donkey doll with her, as she happily skipped her way upstairs, leaving Brian and his dad speechless with Nicole's action.
"I can't believe it took just that to calm Anais down."
"We've tried everything to get her to stop screaming, but nothing worked until you showed up."
"Yeah, I'll admit even I'm surprised something like that works. But don't worry too much about it." Nicole assured them.
With that, the older, blue feline went back outside to help both her husband and Annie out with the groceries, leaving just Gumball, Darwin, Brian and Gordon in the living room.
"So much for a good morning." Brian muttered under his breath.
"Don't be such a downer, Brian..." Darwin began. "The day is going to improve."
"Darwin's right." Gumball agreed with his brother. "You just have to go with the flow."
"For our sakes, I hope so." Gordon said no one in particular, just praying that he wouldn't be in a situation like the one he and his son just experienced.
The next few hours proved to be far more hectic than the O'Quinns have ever imagined, considering how their weekend was already turning out so far.
Shortly after getting the groceries into the house, Annie and Nicole began to argue on how to arrange the food in the cabinet and the refrigerator; the older, purple fox wants to put them in based on how much space they have left, while the older, blue feline insisted that they should be put in based on size and shape. Matters only got more complicated when Richard walked into their argument and decided to eat half of the groceries that they just bought from the supermarket, much to their chagrin. But that was only just the tip of the iceberg; while Gordon was in his room trying fix up a computer for a customer, Gumball and Darwin wandered into the area by accident, before the two decided to turn the computer on, with the wolf's face close to the circuits, shocking him in the process. It was a miracle that he managed to survive, aside from a few burn marks covering his faces and some smoking fur, while the Watterson brothers could only laugh sheepishly. Recently, while trying to have a good lunch at the kitchen, Gumball began to tease his sister around for a bit, prompting Anais to throw some of her food back at his face in response, resulting in a food fight and making a big mess in the process.
While his exasperated parents, as well as Richard and Nicole, began to clean up the mess they accidentally made, Brian, after cleaning himself up, went to the backyard, as he attempted to calm himself down, but still expressed irritation how his day is going so far.
'Oh the day is going to improve.' the purple fox thought sarcastically. 'If this is supposed to be an improvement, then I'm not impressed at all.'
"Brian, are you alright?" a certain blue feline asked out of the blue, prompting Brian to turn around and see Gumball standing right beside him, along with his siblings.
"I don't know, what do you think?" he responded with sarcasm, causing the trio to recoil in shock, before Darwin spoke up.
"Look, we admit that today isn't as good as we had imagined and it's our fault that it isn't much of an improvement."
"I know it's not much, but we'll find a way to make it up to you." Anais suggested.
Brian pondered for a moment, thinking about what the child prodigy just said to him. But as the purple fox tried to come up with something, he noticed that Gumball was no longer with them, much to his surprise.
"Anais, where is your brother?"
"Last time I saw him, he went to check out the greenhouse over there." the child prodigy replied, pointing her finger at the building, much to the purple fox's horror.
"Oh no."
"Is there something wrong?" Darwin asked his friend, noticing the look of terror on his face.
"There's no time to explain! We need to get Gumball out of there before he runs into Elsie!"
"Elsie? Who's-" was all Anais could say, before Brian grabbed her hand and quickly dashed into the greenhouse, with Darwin following suit.
"Whoa! This greenhouse is a lot bigger from the inside!" Darwin exclaimed in astonishment, as he, Anais and Brian made their way through the bushes.
"How could something so small contain something this huge?" asked the child prodigy.
"You're going to have to ask my mom about that." Brian replied. "Right now, we need to find Gumball before it's too late."
Agreeing with the purple fox, the trio split up, searching high and low for the mischievous blue feline, whether it was the swamps or the ravine. But so far, all they could find were critters and insects inhabiting the area and no trace of Gumball, despite their best efforts. After several minutes of searching around for him, the trio regrouped once more, dismayed that they haven't located their friend anywhere in the greenhouse.
"Any luck?" Brian asked the Watterson siblings.
"Unfortunately, no." Anais replied. "We searched everywhere that Gumball might be, but he was nowhere to be found."
"What are we going to do?!" Darwin fearfully exclaimed. "If we don't find Gumball soon, Mrs. Mom will be peeved at us!"
"Let's calm down for a moment, Darwin..." Brian began. "I'm sure your brother hasn't gone that far, though I do wish that we had a lead of his whereabouts."
As if to answer his question, the trio were startled by the screams of a certain blue feline and before they knew it, a panic stricken Gumball was heading right towards them, much to their relief.
"Gumball, it's so good to see you!" Brian shouted with joy, as he quickly rushed towards him and gave the blue feline a big hug. "I'm glad to see you safe and sound."
"Don't mention it, but would you let me go? I can't feel my arms." Gumball asked his friend, as the purple fox quickly let go and rubbed his head sheepishly.
"Gumball, where were you?" Darwin asked his brother.
"We've been searching for you all day." Anais added, prompting the blue feline to take a deep breath before offering the trio an explanation.
"Long story short, I got lost the moment I stepped inside and wandered around in this place before I saw a four legged beast chasing me!"
The moment Gumball made his last statement it sent chills down towards Brian's spine, knowing full well what his friend was talking about.
"Please tell me that Elsie didn't follow you here."
"You mean to tell me that beast is a girl?!"
Before Brian could answer Gumball's question, the four heard a loud roar right behind them, no doubt belonging to Elsie.
"Now's not the time to answer questions! We need to get the flip out of here!"
With that, Brian, along with the Watterson siblings, immediately ran in the opposite direction, hoping to give themselves enough time to get away from Elsie as fast as they could.
The four ran with all of their might, taking every twist and turn they could make in an attempt to outwit their pursuer. Unfortunately, Elsie was just as fast as she was the last time the purple fox visited the greenhouse, dashing from one area after another, intending to catch her prey, prompting the four to run even faster than before. Eventually, after several minutes, the group made a turn around the corner, only to find a dead end in their path, much to their chagrin.
"Aw man! I can't believe we made a wrong turn!" Brian complained. "It's times like this I really wish I had that whistle with me when we came here."
"I'm too young to die!" Darwin whined.
"Alright then genius, what do we do now?!" Gumball demanded.
"Honestly, I don't know." the purple fox admitted.
"Wait a minute, Brian..." Anais began. "Have you ever found a way to tame her?"
"Why's that important?"
The child prodigy pondered for a moment, before an idea came to mind.
"Guys, I think I know a way to calm Elsie down, but you have to listen very carefully."
"As long as we get out of here, I'm fine with that." said Gumball, before his sister huddled him and his friends around to discuss what she had in mind.
Sniffing their scent was a lot easier than she ever imagined, as Elsie was easily able to track them down, no matter where they went. The one thing she didn't count on was how fast they really were, but it didn't matter, as the hybrid beast was inching closer towards them and once she cornered them, she will pounce right at her prey and-
"Here kitty, kitty, kitty."
Elsie stopped dead in her tracks and saw only Brian by himself, much to her confusion. She could have sworn that there were three other people with him. Where did they go? Did they leave him on purpose or something? And are they still around?
As much as the hybrid beast was concerned, she simply shrugged her shoulders and resumed heading right towards the purple fox as cautiously as she could, keeping her guard up for any possible ambush. But as she inched much closer to Brian, it was then that Elsie noticed that Brian was suddenly smirking at her.
"Alright guys, do your thing!"
The moment he uttered those last words, both Gumball and Darwin popped out from the bushes, taking the hybrid beast by complete surprise. But before she could have a chance to react, both brothers managed to tie her legs up with the vines, preventing the hybrid beast from making a quick escape, as Anais jumped from the tree branch and landed on top of Elsie, as she struggled to free herself from the surprise ambush.
"Quit struggling already! I'm just here to calm you down, so hold still!"
But the hybrid beast ignored her words and continued to struggle with all of her might, prompting the child prodigy to quickly make her way to the hybrid beast's neck, before she pinched on it as hard as she could. After a few minutes of struggling, Elsie slowly calmed down and soon purred gently, as the boys slowly approached both the child prodigy and the beast, with an astonished Brian speaking first.
"Anais, that was amazing back there."
"How did you manage to do that, sis?" asked Gumball.
"Yeah, you managed to calm her down in seconds." Darwin noted.
"That's simple, you guys..." the child prodigy began, as she gently rubbed the beast's neck. "I watched and studied enough about wild animals to know certain areas that would make them quite submissive. Considering that Elsie is part cat, I figured it might work on her."
"Man, I really wish I would have known that sooner when I first came here." Brian muttered. "That said, we need to get out of here before our parents find out."
Agreeing with the purple fox on that last statement, the four began the long trek back to the entrance of the greenhouse, with Elsie leading the way.
After taking several shortcuts and quick paths through the greenhouse, Brian and the Watterson siblings finally found their way to the entrance, leaving the greenhouse right behind them, as Elsie simply turned around and returned back to her environment, as the four decided to catch their breath for the moment.
"That was some day, wasn't it?" Brian asked his friends.
"Yeah, it really was." Gumball replied. "Look, we owe you an apology for how the weekend turned out."
"Gumball's right." Darwin agreed. "We should have been more careful to begin with or we wouldn't have made today worse."
"I wish there was something we can do to make it up to you and your parents." Anais stated.
"Don't worry too much about it, you guys..." Brian began. "I'll admit the morning got off to a shaky start, but in the end, I actually had some fun back inside the greenhouse."
The Watterson siblings couldn't help but feel touched; happy to hear that their friend was not entirely upset on today was turning out.
"Kids, are you still back here?" Annie called out right behind them.
"Don't worry mom, we're doing…pretty...good…" Brian trailed off, as he and his friends saw Annie, along with Gordon, Richard and Nicole look like a complete mess, as if the four had went through something perilous during their absence.
"Mrs. Mom, what happened to you, Mr. Dad, Mr and Mrs. O'Quinn?" asked Darwin.
The adults looked at one another, uncertain how to explain to the children on what kind of situation they were in, before Richard decided to speak up on behalf of the group.
"Well Darwin, it's kind of a funny story..."
