Chapter 13-Legenda Initium
Hannah lovingly stroked the muzzle of the giant Hebridean Black Dragon in front of her. She looked into its eyes. Neville's eyes. This was Neville. Whatever fear she had at the sight of the beast in front of her was laid to rest when she saw those eyes. This was her Neville. This was another part of him. She knew he was strong. She knew he was powerful, but the magic rolling off of him now was unbelievable. It was almost visible and it would certainly make any enemy pause an attack. Neville turned suddenly and looked at Harry, Ron, and Ginny. He ran towards them and let a vicious snarl escape his mouth. Harry's shield wrapped itself around the two Weasleys and Neville paused. Ron stepped forward.
"It was Harry's idea mate. I just did what he asked me to. So kill him first at any rate."
Harry stepped forward and let his Altor Regnum magic flow off of him. "Neville, Hannah was never in any danger. She knew about it all along, Ginny filled her in as we walked. I needed a way to find out for sure if you were Altor Regnum so you could learn to use the magic before we were forced to fight for our lives against The Dark Lord. Feel my magic Nev. I imagine in this form you can probably almost taste it, or even see it. It's familiar. I should know, I can feel yours, and the only word I can think of to describe it is… family. We're brothers as far as I'm concerned Neville."
Neville nodded his head in the affirmative.
"Do you think you can change back so we can chat about this? It's pretty easy, just think about what it feels like to be you. Just Neville Longbottom."
Off to one side Hannah Abbott stood in awe. She had been thinking to herself just moments before that Neville must be one of the most powerful wizards who ever lived. Now standing here with both Harry and Neville she was almost overwhelmed. If Neville was impressive, then Harry was awe-inspiring. The magic rolling off of him almost made her want to cower in fear, and he wasn't even in his Altor Regnum form. The two of them together was something truly magnificent to behold. She was sure she was living in a new time of legend. Wizards and witches would tell stories for years and years to come about these two, she was sure of it. She found herself considering the privilege of it all. The fact that she could call both of these wizards her friend was something special. The ever developing relationship she had with Neville was icing on the cake to her. She started falling in love with him long before she knew anything of his great power. The thought that she may get to have a front row seat to all he may accomplish was humbling and, if she was honest, more than a little cool.
Ginny was back behind Harry thinking similar thoughts. She contemplated her future with a man who was certain to become a legend even more famous than he already was. She had felt the raw Altor Regnum magic from Harry before when he had shown her 'Talon', but somehow here with Neville he seemed even more. Neville was scary powerful, she could feel that much. But whatever magic was now being displayed by her fiancé was just magnificent. It was like he just became the Alpha of his pack or something. As she considered this more and more she thought it must be the truth. Neville joining the Altor Regnum must have triggered something in Harry was well. Harry had always been the leader of their little gang, but he had always deferred to adults or sometimes to Hermione. This new Harry was something else. She couldn't ever see this Harry deferring to anyone. This was his birthright. She could feel it, and she was pretty sure everyone else could as well. She was witnessing history and she got to be a part of it.
Ron watched as Neville temporarily struggled to change back to himself. He turned and incanted the Patronus charm, then sent the wispy silver animal off to the school to let Hermione know to join them. As he watched Neville turn back to himself he thought about how he would have handled a situation like this in the past. He had always been a little jealous of Harry but he had spent a good portion of the last couple years leaving that behind. He wasn't jealous of Neville either, because he knew Harry. Harry would never exclude Ron, or leave him behind. Harry had called Neville brother, but he knew that Harry already considered him a brother, and Hermione, a sister. Hermione! She was what made all of this alright. Ron knew she loved him. He also knew he didn't deserve it. She made all the things that would have bothered him in the past seem stupid and petty now. She made him want to be better, need to be better. His newer outlook could allow him to look at what had just happened and take it for what it was… Amazing! Harry and Neville were probably the two most powerful wizards alive. What they were going to accomplish he could only imagine at. It didn't make him feel sore or jealous, it made him feel proud and included. He was best friends with Harry Potter and the brother of Bill Weasley, he knew what it meant to never be the most powerful wizard in the room. He, more than anything, was excited about getting to be a part of a future that was sure to be exciting. A future was something that the Golden Trio had never really had until now. Ron knew in his heart of hearts that Harry was going to defeat Voldemort and all the doubts he used to have about his future had been erased in these last few months. Hermione walked up and slipped her hand into his as he thought.
Hermione had watched the whole thing play out from the steps of the castle. She more or less knew what was going to happen anyway. She had a fair idea of just how powerful her friends were. When Harry had first displayed his Altor Regnum magic Hermione had immersed herself in research about magical power and potential. She discovered that magical power had to do with two factors. The first was the size of someone's magical core. The second was the amount of ambient magic that is drawn to a person at any given time. She discovered that there is an index comprised of two different scores made into one that fairly definitively measures a witch or wizards power levels. Each had a fairly complicated spell involved. The first was a diagnostic type medical spell that measures the size of someone's core and had a measureable number attached proportionate to relative size. For instance a non magical would register somewhere between zero and four, a squib would measure between five and thirteen, and witches and wizards would measure from fourteen on up. The second spell literally measures the ambient magic that is drawn to the core at a time of magical rest, in other words, at a time when no spell was being performed. So everyone has two scores and the combination of the two scores is the magical power level of the individual. The tests were originally designed to measure the power levels of Aurors and potential Aurors. The two scores, the CL or Core Level score and the AMD or Ambient Magic Drawn score, were used to place trainees into appropriate groups and scenarios for testing. She had secretly been testing her friends and allies for several days now. Her own scores were relatively high. She had a CL score of 34, and an AMD score of 47 for a total Power Level Index of 81, placing her in the top four or five percent of all wizarding people. Ron scored a CL of 32 and an AMD of 49 to match her score of 81. Ginny's scores were 39 and 49 for a PLI of 88. The highest scores among the Order of the Phoenix were Bill with a PLI of 104, Fleur at 94, Kingsley, and McGonagall at 101. She very discreetly cast the spells on Neville now as he stood there. After measuring Harry's scores yesterday Neville's CL score of 79 didn't surprise her at all. The AMD score at 96 didn't shock her either. Neville at 175 PLI was one of the three most powerful wizards who had ever been measured. Voldemort himself had only been tested at 114 when he was younger. She measured Harry the day before and was originally astonished to see his scores at 99 CL and 134 AMD. At 233 Harry was the most powerful wizard ever recorded on the PLI. The original Altor Regnum and Merlin were never measured since the testing spells didn't exist back then. She was confident that they would score similar to what she saw in Neville and Harry. PLI scores don't necessarily determine the winner of a conflict, but it was good to know the potential strength of some of her allies, especially for an analytical mind like hers. The truth was the kind of AMD scores that Neville and Harry showed meant that they could perform magic for much longer at high levels than anyone they would face in the upcoming battle. It was a welcome thought because Hermione tended to worry so much about her friends. That she was confident of Harry, and Neville's abilities besides just added to that confidence. Harry, with his power, natural shield, and time altering abilities was nearly invincible and thus far there wasn't a single death eater who could report those abilities to their master, because none of them had ever lived through the encounters with her friend. Voldemort would be caught completely by surprise about Harry and Neville's new capabilities. The new alliance Harry had forged with the muggle government made her even more confident. Voldemort and the death eaters had no idea just how capable muggle military forces could be. Her confidence in her friends and the outcome of the battle led her to think of the future, a future where they could build new and exciting alliances with the non-magical world, and create new and exciting spells and technology. They were standing at the cusp of something truly wonderful.
"Legenda initium," she breathed quietly.
"What's that love?" Ron murmured back.
"Oh I was just commenting on how important I think Neville and Harry are going to be for wizard-kind. Legenda initium means, basically, birth of a legend or start of legend. Those two are going to change the world forever and I'm pretty sure we get to go along for the ride. It's exciting!"
"I know. I've been thinking the same thing. Can you feel the power coming off the two of them? It would make me want to run and hide if I didn't know them so well. As it is I feel like I should cover my eyes or my bits or something," Ron replied with a bit of a smirk on his face.
"Honestly Ronald. Have some respect for the moment would you?"
"I am respecting the moment love, my bits are precious to me. If I'm scared for them, then that's the ultimate sign of respect."
"You're impossible!"
"And you love me for it, just admit it. It will ease your troubled soul. Say it with me. I love Ronald Weasley for his impossibility and his bits."
One slap, one punch, and several groans later Ron gave up with a cheeky smile.
Harry had turned and beckoned everyone to come in closer for a chat. They all converged on the spot where Harry and Neville stood.
"So I wanted to get the chance to talk to you five all together for a bit today. Neville is gonna find this out but there are some definite advantages to this whole Altor Regnum thing. I find out something new almost everyday, like new abilities or enhanced old ones. One of the things that my Altor Regnum form and magic have given me is limited control of time on some level. When I am in my griffin form, time moves like everyone else is standing still, and it's true to a limited extent in my human form as well. For the last four or five days I have been getting feelings, almost like premonitions that I know are true or, will be. I don't think I'm a seer but I think 'Talon' has some connection to time itself. One of the things that I know to be true is that the six of us…yes that includes you Hannah, are going to be close for a long while, and be a team of sorts. I don't know what it means, or why but I know it's true. Neville you know about my dad and his friends right? They called themselves the Marauders. They were brilliant pranksters. Well one of the things they accomplished together was that they all had alternate forms. Remus is obviously a werewolf, but dad, Sirius, and Wormtail were all animagi. Dad was a huge stag, Sirius was a large grimm, and Wormtail was a rat. I want to encourage the three ladies to pursue your animagus forms. Mione has all the info and can help you out. She's part way into the process. We're not going to be like the Marauders and I don't really want to be, but I do want to honor the memories of my dad and Sirius and I'd love for all of us to be able to be with Moony during his transformations when we can. Neville, no eating the werewolf yeah?"
They all laughed and harry continued with a smile. "Neville one thing the Marauders did when they achieved their forms was to give themselves nicknames that represented their form. Prongs, Padfoot, Moony, and Wormtail. We've been doing the same thing. Just to honor them, and because it's kind of fun, and we could use some fun in this messy world we've grown up in. So I'm Talon, Ron is Raptor, and you need a name. I was thinking 'Scorch' if you can breathe fire. Can you?
"I don't know. Let's see."
Neville stepped back quite a ways from the group and changed. He looked off towards the lake and let out a mighty white hot jet of fire. Then he laughed in a funny sort of dragon snort before changing back and rejoining them.
"Well I guess that answers that one!" Ron jovially announced. "What do think mate, does 'Scorch' work for you?"
"Yeah, I like it. It's fun. I don't want to take myself too seriously in all this mess you know. We're still teenagers anyways."
They all laughed and agreed. Then Harry looked towards the girls.
"What do you say ladies, can you each push hard to achieve your animagus forms?"
They all three nodded. Then Hermione added "I have some of the potion ready. We can find out your forms this afternoon if you two want."
Ginny and Hannah both wanted to, so it was agreed. Harry picked up where he left off.
"I'm not just thinking about our war with Tom and his death eaters here guys. I'm thinking this is a long term relationship we are heading into here. So I was thinking we could kind of run this little organization properly and each of us focus on an area of expertise. The easy ones are Hermione in Research and Development, Ron in Strategy and Tactics, and Neville as the main muscle or security. So that leaves me, Ginny and Hannah. Hannah what do you want to focus on?"
"I was planning on becoming a healer after the war. Can I be the group healer?"
Harry smiled his biggest smile. "I was hoping you'd say that. Ginny that leaves you and me. Do you think you could be our spy? You know recon and espionage specialist."
She smiled so big her face nearly cracked. "That sounds about perfect I'd say."
Harry shrugged, "then it's only me left. What do you guys need me to focus on?"
To a person they all went silent then after an awkward moment, they all burst out laughing. For his part Harry looked confused, and looked at each of them questioningly.
Neville looked at his new 'brother' and had a little pity on him. "Harry you're the leader mate. We don't need you focus on anything else."
Hermione helped out with her logical thoughts. "He's right Harry you pretty much just need to lead us, but if you need a specific focus I would say 'Diplomatic Relations' could be your focus. You speak for the group."
He looked around the small circle, they all nodded their agreement to him.
"Ok. Let's keep up the lines of communication. Stuff with Tom will hit the fan in the next three or four days I think. So be ready at any time. I have an update and meeting with the Prime Minister again today. He's already promised to help with the final battle. The muggle soldiers will probably be here later today or tomorrow. Now ladies, if you wouldn't mind. Ron and I have to teach Neville how to use those dragon wings."
"What do say Ron, Nev? Fancy a fly?
