~A Vampire Knight Side Story Part VI~

A door opened and shut loudly around a fourth of a way through my lecture, and I looked up to see wavy black hair and a 'devil may care' attitude. Kira. I knew I'd been forgetting something when I came back. Her crap mood reflected how I felt inside and I caught her glance at Zero for a split second before sitting in her seat.

The kid in question was obviously oblivious to the interaction as he was blankly staring out the window. Well, well...at least I wasn't the only vampire hunter with rejection issues. However, by the atmosphere I could tell that Kira hadn't even approached him about what was bothering her. I made sure to watch them carefully throughout the lecture, but nothing had changed.I dismissed class and watched as Kira headed for the door.

"Kira, could I speak with you please?"

She just nodded quietly and approached me with caution. Zero gave a curious look and came down to the lecturing desk as well, quickly followed by Yuki who apparently thought that all of this was her business as well. The girl wasn't even a vampire hunter and I still blamed her for breaking up our team.

"Not you, Yuki. You can go." It was a final statement from me, but she looked back with innocent defiance.

"Whatever involves Zero involves me too!" She put her hands on her hips and pulled a white band up her arm that represented the disciplinary committee, as if it was a badge that gave her overruling authority. I didn't have time for her antics.

"Even if it involves detention?" I replied cooly and tauntingly, and she noticeably blanched. She put each of her hands on Kira's and Zero's shoulders and I heard her murmur a "good luck" before she walked quickly out of the room.

"How quickly Cross's daughter runs away." I began to laugh then as the door closed behind the last student to leave.

"She's just not very good in her studies. I take it we're not really being assigned detention?" the silver-haired vampire/vampire hunter asked. A walking contradiction, that one. But at least he was sharp.

"No, I wanted to speak to Kira alone since she is my student after all. Did you need something, Kiryu?"

Kira gave him a pointed look and he just stared stonily back like he didn't understand what she was trying to convey. She finally gave a sigh and gestured to the door.

"Just leave, I'll be okay." Kira verbally dismissed him as well. He gave her another weird look and left. I was definitely not in the teen drama loop apparently.

"Is there something I need to know?" I eyed her suspiciously and she calmly shook her head. These kids were all too uptight and needed to learn how to loosen up a little. "You know what? I'm in the mood to get something good to eat. Not this cafeteria nightmare. You up to joining me?"

She looked a little startled that I'd changed the subject so abruptly, but gave a quick nod. I gave her a good hard slap on the back that seemed to startle her even more and proceeded to exit like everyone else had done. I smiled as I heard her tentatively start to follow. I'd make a vampire hunter out of her yet.

I handed my helmet to my apprentice and put my hair up in a bun so it wouldn't fly in either of our faces. A few of the students still roaming the campus on their way to the cafeteria curiously looked our way as I got on the bike and helped Kira up in a decent manner, to keep her skirt from flying up on the ride into town.

"Have you ever ridden on a motorcycle?" I asked, and received a damned head shake again like she was mute.

"Well, just hold on. If you go falling off it'd be a shame to all vampire hunter kind, and we don't want that happening. Also, don't push any buttons or you might accidentally hit the self destruct or eject. Again, that's not something you'd want on your reputation so early on. Might start up some unwanted nicknames." I smiled and held up a peace sign to reassure her, but she just looked downright terrified. Well, I was joking about the self destruct and eject. I was a vampire hunter, not James Bond.

With that, I sped off towards the nearby city, the sun still high in the sky with some speckled clouds here and there. Kira was holding onto the gripping bar on the back until I did some crazy maneuvering and she switched to holding on to me. I would have liked to have talked to her on the way, but my voice would have gotten lost on the wind.

More cobble stoned streets greeted us in the city and I slowed down to a steady pace so as to point to some places and ask where she wanted to eat. She finally spoke up and said an adamant 'no' to a parfait shop nearby, and I rose an eyebrow and wondered what that was about.

"Zero said there's a nice ramen place nearby. I'd like to try that." Her muffled voice came from the helmet and I headed to park near the little noodle shop.

"See, that wasn't so bad was it?" I asked as I turned the key and hopped off the bike, taking the helmet from Kira to set on a handle bar. I almost laughed again as I saw her face. A light green shade matching the bike was fading from her complexion as she stood upright once again.

"I think I'd like to stick to horseback riding next time." She finally warmed up a little to me and looked at me levelly.

"Alright, alright. Let's see what the Kiryu clan finds so appealing about this place." I commented and walked inside, reveling in the delicious aroma that welcomed us.

The chef warmly shouted a 'welcome!' and gestured for us to sit down. We complied and I was finally able to talk to Kira while the man turned to cook our orders.

"So, I haven't really been talking to you outside of our lessons. I'm sorry about that. I've been a little busy with some missions. I know I'm pretty severe and serious when it comes to training, but it's necessary. I heard you've already had some run-ins with the beasts?" I started, trying to gain some insight into her experience.

"Yeah, we ran into one after we ate at the parfait shop down the street."

"Did you make the kill?"

"No, some of the Night Class students came down from the Academy and were hunting it as well. The vice president brought it down in the end."

"And Zero? What was he doing? Struggling because of his nature?"

"No, he did everything right. He just didn't get the chance to bring it down, like me." She sounded defensive of her partner and I raised an eyebrow.

"So, you and Zero. There's some history there. The only ones who can't see it are the oblivious guys and one very naive disciplinary committee member. What's the story?" I could see her visibly stiffen. Well it really was obvious that there was something she hadn't revealed to the guy, because he looked at her like she was just a new acquaintance.

"I knew him, before everything happened to his family. He just doesn't recognize me now. I don't blame him. It was a long time ago and I've changed my appearance. I just thought that somehow he'd know."

"Guys are stupid. And trust me, they don't get any smarter when they grow up. You should just tell him. It's obviously bothering you and it'll just be a distraction when you guys are out there on missions together. Clear the air." Well hell, wasn't I just full of wisdom today? If only I could take my own advice and confront Toga about it. It'd be nice to stay friends.

"It's just complicated. With everything." She spread out her hands and looked down, and I thought back to the Cross girl following Zero around and understood. Kai's love interest was long gone, and he still had trouble moving on. I wouldn't want to intrude on a long friendship, possible relationship, either.

"My well of wisdom is all dried up when it comes to matters of the heart. We're raised and trained to kill, not love. I'm just as clueless as you." I confided in my apprentice, hoping she'd feel better that she wasn't the only one.

The ramen chef put the steaming bowls in front of us and smiled widely, waiting for us to have the first bite and tell him how it was. With noodles still in Kira's mouth, she gave him a thumbs up and I laughed.

"Aren't you supposed to be in school?" he asked, eyeing Kira's uniform. I put an arm around her and smiled.

"I'm just taking my precious student out to lunch."

"Okay, well I made some extra ramen and I wanted to ask if you could deliver it to one of the students there? That troubled looking boy with the silver hair comes in here from time to time but never seems to finish his meal. I worry about him. Your meals will be on me of course." He smiled and gestured to the pot behind him. The nice man kept the broth hot so it would still be warm when we brought it to who I assumed was Zero.

"Roger that. I know just who you're talking about. He's one of my students as well and a long time friend of Kira here." Kira just looked away, embarrassed, and kept slurping up her noodles.

"Is that so? It's nice to know he has such a pretty young girl looking after him." He smiled and she coughed a little around her mouthful.

We finished up the ramen and the chef put Zero's to go food in a container. I slipped a hundred dollar bill under the bowl as Kira looked at me wide-eyed. I winked and put a finger to my mouth to silence her, and gratefully took the bag of food from the ramen chef.

I tied the bag to my bike and stretched my arms a little before getting back on. Kira smiled and didn't look as queasy when she took the helmet and climbed back onto the bike behind me. Well, at least I was getting one relationship right for a change.

I revved up the motorcycle and took off in a better mood, glad that I'd taken on an apprentice I could call a friend.

Writer's Note: Alright, so I know this isn't the greatest chapter, but I wanted to fill you guys in on who my other OC (Kira) is. I had written her into a ZeroxOC a long time ago and then made this story into a spinoff of that one, but this one was a lot better written so I continued on with this. If you'd like me to rewrite that fanfiction as well, I can, but I'll need some requests for that :) I promise to bring Toga and Kaien back in the next chapter! I hope you enjoyed and I want to give a special shout out to those of you who reviewed, favorited, and followed! I messaged all of you who did! I guess you guys weren't much of a fan of this chapter since I haven't gotten any reviews, but I really need the feedback to know for sure. If it's awful, feel free to tell me so I can change it! Please and thank you
