Chapter 3
When they arrived at school the next morning, Bella couldn't help but be nervous about seeing Edward again, even with they small waves of anger she felt at the other teen. Looking around the parking lot, her brown eyes couldn't pick up on the silver Volvo she had seen him leaving in yesterday. Instead, in the same spot the Volvo was parked the day before, was a huge, rusty red painted jeep. Rosalie and Jasper Hale, as well as Emmett and Alice Cullen were standing there, but she could see no sign of the bronze haired teen.
Looking over at her sister, she sighed at the visible black bags underneath the blue eyes. Artemis had not slept well at all last night, crawling into her bed at three o'clock that morning. Bella had slept peacefully, only waking when Artie had come to her, but she knew her sister had not had the same pleasure. So, standing here in the school parking lot looking as if she was ready to fall asleep standing - which, now that Bella thought about it, happened quite often - Bella was feeling a bit more concerned then she was at breakfast. With the added stress of a possible no Edward Cullen to shout at, the option of grabbing Artemis - because there was no way she was leaving her little sister to brave the wolves on the second day of school as she was - jump in her truck and go home was looking more and more appetising as the seconds ticked by before the bell went.
But she didn't and soon the bell did go, and she dragged herself off to her first class of the day - English. At least they were studying something interesting, from what she gleaned from her lesson yesterday.
Jasper was one of the first people in the classroom that morning, already contemplating the new students - Isabella, or Bella, had gotten to Edward fast, his whole family had noticed. He had run off last night, saying he needed to get away without giving any of them an explanation of any sort. It was frustrating, especially when his brother didn't give out any information. He had seen Bella, and she had seemed nice enough, even if her emotions were very strong, and influential, and her scent was nearly addictive, her blood calling to him particularly strongly. According to Edward, he couldn't read her mind at all, describing it like an impenetrable barrier keeping him from invading her mind. Alice's and Jasper's gifts, however, worked perfectly well on her - perhaps even too well.
Her sister however, was almost the complete opposite. Artemis' emotions were limited, only the strongest pushing through his barriers, no other feelings invading his mind. Her scent was calming, almost alarmingly so, and dulled the scent of those around him. His family had agreed with him, saying that they lost their blood lust when she was around, confusing even Carlisle. What confused them almost as much was her ability to dull their own, Alice saying her visions of the blonde girl were fuzzy at best and non-existent at worst, Jasper agreeing with her, saying that only the very strongest of emotions she was feeling were getting through to him, and Edward had stayed around long enough to say that reading her mind was like listening to someone through a body of water.
Carlisle and he had theorised that it was an early on set of gifts they would gain if they were to become vampires, and the oldest two vampires of the Cullen coven were intrigued to find out the full extent of the sisters' gifts.
His head snapped up as the distinctive scent of the younger sister entered the room, the all too well known scent of exhaustion following behind her like a cloud. Jasper frowned in worry, seeing the deep bags under the girls eyes and guessing that moving to a new town and sleeping in a new bed hadn't agreed with her.
"Hey."
He almost jumped at the greeting, and turned around to face Artemis as she sat down next to him, quickly grabbing the correct textbook, her pencil case and a notebook from her bag before dropping it to the floor with less than no care.
"Hello" He greeted back, almost uncomfortable with the situation.
She glanced at him quickly, flashing a quick, small smile in his direction before opening her textbook to the page already written on the board. He quickly copied her, realising he hadn't done so yet.
"Enjoying the school so far?" He asked conversationally.
"Its alright, I suppose. Though it is only my first day, so I can't judge just yet." She said softly.
"Hm." He said, being cut off from saying more as the teacher walked to the front of the classroom and introduced the lesson.
He shot Artemis a smile, which she returned, before both of them turned back to the teacher.
When Bella walked into the lunchroom that day, she was greeted with the sight of her sister siting at the elusive Cullen table, chatting happily with the tiny Alice and the huge Emmett. She stopped at the door in shock, knowing her sister didn't make friends fast, and the fact that she had to make friends with the most mysterious people in the school.
She didn't move until Jessica grabbed hold of her hand and drug her to the lunch line, where she automatically grabbed a sandwich, a packet of crisps and an apple, followed by a bottle of water. She almost robotically followed her new friends to the same table they sat at yesterday, not taking her eyes off her laughing sister, still too shocked to do anything.
"Why is your sister siting with the Cullens?" Was what jolted her out of her thoughts. Jessica and a tall girl called Lauren were sliding into the seats either side of her, obviously looking for gossip.
"I-I don't know." She stuttered, blinking slowly as she turned her head away from the sister in question, looking at the two other girls quickly before returning her gaze to the other table, where the two other Cullens, Jasper and Rosalie, had joined the other three at the table.
Artemis seemed to fit in at the table, from the distance she was watching looking rather similar to Alice and looking like she got on very well with Emmett. Bella couldn't keep her flair of jealousy down. She was stuck with this bunch of teenagers, who only gossiped and talked to each other about shopping or football, and her sister was with the mysterious Cullens, making friends with what seemed to be the most popular people in school, even if no one admitted it.
"Alice is in mine and Artemis' French class, and I think Artemis mentioned meeting Emmett in her Phycology class, although what he's doing taking Phycology, I don't know." Eric interrupted, shoving himself over the table towards where the three girls sat to be heard more clearly.
Bella frowned.
"And she sits next to Jasper in our World History class." Angela piped up nervously, sending a sweet smile Bella's way before bending back over what looked like newspaper articles.
"I can't believe they're letting her sit with them, even if she does share classes with most of them." Lauren said, flipping her dyed blonde hair over her shoulder, shooting a snooty glare in the direction of the smaller blonde, although Artemis wouldn't be able to see it.
Bella looked back over, and her frown deepened even further when she saw that Emmett had an arm thrown over her small shoulders, and Alice had leaned in even closer than she as previously, a blindingly bright smile on her face, seen even from where Bella sat.
"I'll talk to her later." She promised the table.
