When Jesse and the kids disappeared that Saturday morning, Beca didn't think too much of it. It gave her a chance to slip her headphones on and sit down with her laptop, catching up on all the work that she had been putting off, with the move and complete upheaval of their lives as they knew it. Boxes still scattered the house and certain things were still missing (Beca had spent twenty minutes going through the boxes labelled 'kitchen' looking for a soup ladle before giving up, only to find it in a box of Hotwheels cars), but Beca didn't care, at that point.
They had been gone almost an hour and a half when she heard it.
(She thought she was imagining it.)
"Won't you, come see about me? I'll be alone, dancing, you know it baby. Tell me your troubles and doubts…"
Simple Minds was floating through the window. She was hearing what Jesse called 'their song'.
(Obviously she was going completely batshit crazy.)
Standing up, she padded carefully over to the window, pulling the curtain aside.
Jesse was holding a boombox over his shoulder, standing on top of what looked to be Michael's ride on lawnmower.
Holy shit, her life was an eighties movie.
Holy. Shit.
She knew what was happening.
"Be-caw!"
"Giving me everything inside and out".
"Mum, get down here!" Rosie called excitedly.
"Beca!" Ben called. "Hurry up!"
"I'll be right down", she called.
She wasn't for elaborate, over the top gestures. But Jesse was.
(And she'd never say it to him, but she loved it.)
Jesse was expecting a string of long, possibly angrily fired questions, when she came flying down the stairs. What he did not expect was Beca to launch herself into his arms, making Courtney and Dean shriek.
(She came towards him so fast that he barely had the chance to put the boombox down and hurriedly shoved it at Ben.)
"What's going on?" she almost laughed.
Jesse let go of her, grinning.
"Beca Mitchell", Jesse said seriously, reaching into his pocket and withdrawing a little jewellery box, snapping it open. "Will you do me the great honour of becoming my wife, my lover and best friend for life?"
(He could almost hear her. "Don't say lover Jesse".)
She nodded wordlessly, tears streaming down her face, as Jesse pumped his fist into the air as the song started to pick up.
"Don't you… forget about me!" the kids sang in unison, dancing around their father and their mother.
His lips smashed against hers and they were met with excited and disgusted screams and shrieks from their six kids. As Beca batted away tears, Jesse lifted his girlfriend- his fiancée- into his arms, before climbing onto the lawnmower.
He was going to ride into the sunset with his girl, just like Patrick Dempsey.
(Except they had it better than Patrick Dempsey. Because they had their six kids running after them.)
