Chapter 6
"I'm still not sure about this," Brian argued with me three days later in a loud whisper.
I peered out the kitchen window to make sure no one had gotten up from the picnic table where they were all waiting for dessert. This was one conversation that didn't need to be overheard. "We've gone over every scenario, Bri, neither Matt nor Johnny will meet up with you if I'm not there and it is Friday night I know without a doubt where Matt will be and with any luck Johnny will be there too."
"Then we need to get Dom or Leon in on this for backup…maybe even Vince and Jess," he tried again as I grabbed the bowls out of the cupboard. When I didn't answer he spun me around by my shoulder so he could look in my eyes. "Sarah, I don't want you in the line of fire."
There was something pleading and promising in those crystal blues eyes but there was nothing I could say that was going to change his mind. Instead I took the bowls and spoons and walked back outside hoping to end our little conversation for the time being. He came out seconds later carrying the ice cream with something very different in mind.
"About time, ol' coyote was going to start withering away," Leon teased, smacking his hand against Vince's back and laughing from the scowl he received.
I passed the bowls out and resumed my seat between Vince and Letty, "Sorry, couldn't agree on a flavor."
"She wanted Vanilla but I wanted something more exciting and safer like Rocky Road," Brian explained but I caught on to what he was really saying and it took all I had in me to make sure my cheeks didn't flush with anger.
Jesse made a face, "Vanilla is so plain and boring."
"Nothing wrong with plain and boring," I disagreed staring Brian right in the eyes as he sat across from me. "In fact, some might say it's even safer than Rocky Road, less chance of something going wrong."
He never took his eyes away from mine as he replied, "And some might say that the added ingredients make it better. There's plain Vanilla all by itself or Rocky Road that has the extra protection."
Letty cleared her throat and when I tore my gaze away from Brian I saw everyone was watching us with confused expressions. "You two do realize you brought out Chocolate Swirl, right?"
"And I don't think an ice cream can be considered safe," Jesse added as he piled two scoops into his own bowl.
I put my hand on Vince's shoulder as I pushed myself up from the bench, "I don't think I'm hungry for dessert anymore kind of lost my sweet tooth."
"You feeling alright?" Mia half teased, knowing full well that we could have finished the carton of ice cream by ourselves.
Forcing a smile I approached the backdoor to head back inside, "Fine, just going to get an early start on the laundry that seems to be multiplying on Le's floor."
"Told you I don't know how that happened," Leon called after me with an innocent grin on his face.
I made my way down the stairs and threw his clothes in the basket that was sitting in the corner of the room. It always amazed me how much he loved basketball but couldn't seem to get the clothes in the hamper. After I started the wash I took the basket with me into Dom and Letty's room gathering their laundry as well before doing the same for Mia. It wasn't until I was standing outside of his bedroom door that our disagreement came back to me and I had to bite the side of my cheek to hold in the tears.
It was a great feeling, wonderful even, that he cared enough about me to not want anything to happen but I just couldn't take that chance. This had been my mistake and I needed to clean it up the best I could without adding anymore injuries. Just as my bruises faded Leon's turned an angry purple. He'd assure me that he was fine and even try to play it off like it was a medal of honor but every time I saw them I imagined them on Mia or Letty even Dom, Vince and Jesse. I couldn't, wouldn't, let my family get hurt any worse because of me.
"So," I jumped at the sudden voice and turned to see Leon leaning against the wall by the stairs, "Since when do you hate Rocky Road?"
I rolled my eyes and shoved the basket into his hands so he could carry it down the stairs, "Just like Vanilla is all."
"Uh-huh," he muttered as he set the basket down on the floor and gave me a knowing look, "See, it was little things like the ice cream being 'safer' or having 'extra protection' that sparked my interest." I stared down at the pile of clothes refusing to meet his eyes. "This has something to do with Matt doesn't it?" I had never lied to him before and I wasn't about to start now but I couldn't exactly tell him what we had planned either so I stayed silent. "Baby girl, whatever you're scheming in that pretty little head of yours just promise me you won't go and do anything reckless." He kicked the laundry to the side and pulled me into his chest as he wrapped his arms around me. "I can't keep you safe if you're running off without me."
I hugged him back and breathed in his cologne, successfully calming myself down. "I promise not to go anywhere alone."
*Fast and Furious*
Brian and I sat in uncomfortable silence after we snuck out of the house like a couple of teenagers. The hours it took for me to convince him to go through with our plan seemed useless now that my own nerves were kicking. Everything sounded so reasonable when we were talking about it, going over every scenario we could think of, but now that it was time to go through with it I was starting to doubt myself. Not to mention about thirty new scenarios were popping into my head about how wrong this all could go. We pulled up to the restaurant that Matt often frequented and though there were quite a few patrons peacefully eating it did nothing to calm me.
"Here goes nothing," I muttered getting out of the car and rolling my shoulders a little to try and release some of the tension that had started to build.
Brian walked around to the front of the car and waited for me to catch up with him. I could just barely make out the outline of a handgun tucked in the waistband of his jeans and I prayed it didn't come to that. He motioned with his head to the building correcting my previous statement, "Here goes everything."
The hostess smiled warmly as we approached, "Sarah! It's so nice to see you!"
"You too," I forced a smile, grateful that she wasn't aware of the break-up. "Is Matt in tonight?" I nodded to Brian who was standing behind me taking in everyone that was there. "I have someone I wanted to introduce him too."
"Oh, of course," she put the menus back under the kiosk and pointed to the kitchen, "You know the way, right?"
"Too well," I mumbled, offering her a polite smile as I made my way to the back with Brian following close behind. So close in fact that I could almost feel his breath on the back of my neck.
Just as I was about to walk through the kitchen door Brian put his hand on my lower back, "Last chance to walk away, we don't have to do this."
"Yes, we do," I nodded and swallowed my fear as I opened the door. I shoved my hands into the front pockets of my jeans trying to hide the fear and anticipation.
Brian looked around the kitchen and when he saw nothing out of the ordinary he gave me a look of confusion. He followed my line of sight to another door set off to the side that was mostly covered by a black fabric. I had always been told to wait out in the kitchen the multiple times we had come here and I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about what laid behind it.
"Alright," he took a deep breath. "You stay here, I'll take care of this."
"What?!" I loudly whispered, whipping around to hit him in the shoulder. "You're not going in there alone!"
"And you're not going in there period," he argued. "I'm not dangling you in front of them like bait."
I growled in frustration, "That's what the plan was."
"And I'm saying we need a new plan!"
His outburst caused the chefs to look over to us, a little more interested in our conversation than they needed to be. I shoved Brian's shoulder toward the door and waved off the glares we were receiving. The second I walked though that door I wished I listened to Brian and brought Dom and Leon along. Seeing Matt sitting in the corner with some bimbo on his lap and Johnny sitting behind a desk made my heart beat so fast I thought it would beat out of my chest.
"Can I help you with something?" Johnny asked with a smirk on his face. I went to open my mouth to say something when I felt someone grab my arms from behind.
"Let her go!" Brian shouted as he fought against the man that was holding him back.
Johnny strolled over to where I was being held and laughed in my face, "You must have done something right Matthew to have the whores crawling back to you."
"I don't want him," I managed to get out as I kept struggling to get away from the man behind me.
Johnny ran a finger across my jaw line that sent a shiver down my spine and made me flinch, "You come for a real man? I'm sure I can show you things Matthew here has never even imagined."
"Don't you touch her!" Brian roared and it took everything the man had to hold him back.
He just chuckled and tousled my hair, "Would make for the perfect revenge." When no one spoke he continued. "Dominic slept with my sister and though I'd prefer to take my anger out on his own flesh and blood this little piece of trash would do just fine."
I tried to stay strong but I couldn't help the whimper that escaped at the thought of his hands on me.
"We came here to make a deal," Brian kept his voice firm but you could hear the pleading behind it. "Set something up so it goes back to the way it was before; we'd stay away if you do."
Johnny twirled my hair around his finger, "What makes you think I'm scared of Toretto or anyone on his team?"
"Because if you don't take this deal then every piece of evidence I collected against Dom will miraculously show up in your homes, your cars, and your garage putting you away for a very long time," Brian promised before flicking his gaze over to Lance, "I'd think twice about it if I were you, there's no snake skin in prison."
Johnny seemed to think it over for a brief moment, "You're bluffing."
"Try me," Brian challenged.
"Doesn't seem to fair of terms to me," Matt spoke up, shifting the girl in his lap so he could see the rest of us. If looks could kill he'd be lying dead on the floor. He wasn't like this when we were together and I could only imagine he was doing this to stay in Johnny's good graces. "Think we should add a little something to this deal."
Johnny looked intrigued, "What do you suggest?"
"A race," Matt answered. "We stay away, you stay away and don't threaten the Tran's with whatever evidence you think you might have."
"How is that any different than what we were just talking about?" Brian questioned.
Matt's lips curled into a wicked smile, "Winner gets Sarah."
"No way in hell-" Brian started to argue before I cut him off.
"It's a deal."
