A/N: Okay so I am a horrible person. I can't believe I made you guys wait so long. However, I haven't abandoned this story, so don't give up hope. This is just something I churned out super quick to appease you guys. I have plenty more planned, so I promise we'll get there. Please enjoy.
Jane strolled into BPD, making her way to the elevator and raising a hand in greeting when her mother waved enthusiastically at her. People milled around her, making their way to the café, or upstairs or downstairs, or the elevator. They all seemed so normal to Jane. Once upon a time, she was one of them. Then Saturday night had happened. Now she saw everything a little brighter. The rhythmic sounds of feet against the floor slipped into an easy harmony with the constant chatter and the occasional ding of the elevator. She smiled a little, letting just the very beginnings of her grin tug at the corner of her lip.
The moment she walked in the door on her way to her desk, Frost and Korsak had noticed the change.
"Hey, Jane," Frost piped up as she took her seat across from him. "What's got you so happy?"
Jane shrugged. "Nothing."
"C'mon Jane," Korsak's deep voice rumbled across the room. "You were pretty much a vegetable when you left here Friday, and you would've been the same if Cavanaugh hadn't forced you to take the weekend off. What happened over the weekend?"
"Like I said, nothing. I just got up and kicked my ass out of the rut."
Frost and Korsak gave her twin dubious looks.
"Can't a girl just pick herself up?"
"This girl can't," Frost muttered under his breath. Jane caught the words as they floated quietly over to her, and she tossed a pen at his head over the tops of their computers.
"Shut up," she laughed.
"Hey Jane?" Korsak spoke up a few hours later, while they were all in the midst of paperwork, sheets spread across their desks.
"Yeah?" she barely looked up, scribbling a note on one of the sheets and rifling through the rest of the paper to find the other ones.
"I'm thinking of heading out to lunch. Can you let Frost know when he gets back?"
"Let me know what?" Frost re-entered the room.
"I'm heading to lunch. Bit of a slow day, may as well make the most of it."
"Where you going?"
"That new Italian place over by Boston Joe's," Korsak looked excited. "Supposed to have wonderful pasta."
"Can I come?" Frost asked quickly, Korsak's excitement spreading.
"Sure," Korsak stood up. "Bye Jane."
"See ya," Jane waved them off, watching as they left the room.
The moment they left, she rang Maura.
"Jane," Maura said happily. Jane grinned at the joy in her voice.
"Hey, Maur."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing," Jane chuckled. "The guys have gone for lunch and I wanted to see if you wanted to hang out for my lunch hour."
"I suppose," Maura sounded thoughtful. "My lunch is actually in the fridge down here, though."
"Don't worry," Jane reassured her, already shuffling her papers into something resembling a pile with her free hand. "Mine's up here. I'll be down in a minute."
"Brilliant," she could hear Maura's smile. "I'll see you soon."
Jane managed to grab her lunch and head down to the morgue, whilst maintaining an acceptable speed. She would love to dash down and wrap Maura in the circle of her arms and kiss her. However, racing around BPD without an obvious cause might tip off some of her fellow colleagues. So she kept it casual. She was going down to have lunch with her best friend. That's all.
"Maura," Jane dragged out the last part of the doctor's name as she pushed open the door to her best friend's office.
"Jane," Maura grinned from where she sat in her work chair, lunch still packed in its nice little box on the edge of her desk. "Hi."
Jane closed the door behind her, making sure the curtains were shut and checking up and down the hallway for other people. When she found there was no one there, she dropped her lunch onto Maura's desk and strode over to the medical examiner, pulling her to her feet and against Jane's chest in one swift move.
"Hi," Jane leant down, capturing Maura's lips in a chaste kiss.
Maura deepened the kiss, her hands sliding up to cup Jane's face. She brushed her fingers along Jane's jaw, and tingles spread across Jane's cheek and down her neck. Maura pulled away, and Jane missed the warmth of her lips instantly. She couldn't help but smile as Maura buried her head in the crook of Jane's neck, pressing her lips to the pulse she found there.
"What's for lunch?" Jane asked.
"Kale salad," Jane could feel Maura's words as they vibrated against her throat.
Jane made a fake choking sound, and Maura pulled away to look at her incredulously.
"It's very healthy!"
"I'm sure it is," Jane chuckled, her hands running up and down Maura's back, loving the feel of the soft material under the pads of her fingers.
"What do you have?"
"Peanut butter and fluff."
Maura scoffed, and Jane pulled away, her arms lifting from where they rested on Maura's waist.
"Don't mock my sandwich."
"I'm not!" Maura picked up her salad and headed for the small couch on the other side of the office. "It's just not very healthy."
"But it tastes better than your green leafy crap," Jane grabbed her sandwich and followed suit.
"I doubt it," Maura perched delicately on the edge of the couch. Jane sat beside her. They both opened their lunches. Maura nibbled on a forkful of kale salad, and Jane took a large bite of her sandwich, moaning slightly at the delicious flavour combination.
"You wanna taste?" she offered the sandwich to Maura once she'd swallowed her mouthful.
"Sure," Maura smiled. However, to Jane's surprise, instead of biting the sandwich, she leant over and kissed Jane. Her tongue swept along Jane's lips, seeking permission, which Jane easily granted. Their tongues duelled for a moment, before Maura pulled away.
"It is nice," she admitted slowly. "I still prefer my salad though."
"Sure you do," Jane couldn't help but grin, still tasting Maura's salad in her mouth.
A few moments later, there was a sudden knock at the door, and both Jane and Maura jumped. They silently prayed their visitor hadn't seen their interaction. Susie was standing in the doorway, and both Jane and Maura smiled at her.
"Hi Susie," Maura raised a hand in greeting.
"I have the results from the Stephanie Baker tox screen," Susie held up a manila folder.
"Just leave them on my desk, please."
Susie walked timidly over to Maura's desk, slid the folder onto it, and scurried to the door.
"Thanks Susie," Jane called as the criminalist slipped out the door.
When she was gone, Maura stood up to place her container back on her desk. Jane tossed her balled-up cling film in the direction of the trash can, grumbling when it hit the rim and bounced off. Maura propped a hip on the edge of her desk and watched Jane sulk to pick up her rubbish and put it in the bin. The detective then spun on her heel and caught Maura in a tight embrace.
"Jane," Maura laughed, her hands pushing feebly at Jane's shoulders, her grin betraying her attempt at escape. "Someone could see us. Susie was just here."
"They won't," the confidence in Jane's voice was astounding. "So, can I kiss you now?"
"I suppose," Maura sighed, attempting sarcasm. The proud, loving smile that spread across Jane's lips told her she'd hit the mark.
"Good," Jane leant closer. Right before their mouths touched, she breathed out a laugh. "Cause I was going to anyway."
A/N: Here you go. Hope it makes up for the absence in at least some way, shape or form. I hope to have more up soon. If it's not up in a reasonable time frame, feel free to yell at me. Next chapter should be exciting.
