John had been up all night reading Marty's medical files. He had spoken with his brother Michael so that he could make sense of the medical jargon.
Doctor Levin had mentioned the appearance of five different alters in his notes. There was Megan who appeared to be the gatekeeper personality. John had gathered that Megan didn't show or display any emotions and only seemed to care about Todd Manning and Marty. She was cold and calculating and appeared to be the smartest of Marty's alters. She appeared to have control over all the other alters except for T.M.
John read about another alter that called herself Margaret. Doctor Levin notated that this personality represented Marty's innocence. She was six years old, and she was believed to be the youngest of all the alters.
The third alter went by the name of Madison. This alter appeared to be flirtatious, wild, and loved to cause trouble.
The fourth alter was Mary. This alter appeared to be a reflection of Marty's self hatred. She was extremely depressed and often suicidal.
The last alter that Doctor Levin had mentioned in the case notes was T.M. He was a representation of Marty's anger, obsession and need for revenge. He was the most protective of Marty then any other alter and appeared to be the most powerful.
After reading Doctor Levin's case notes and meeting T.M, John was certain that Marty was not faking and he was certain that he wouldn't be able to get any answers out of Marty himself. He decided that he needed to find Irene...maybe once he got Marty and Irene in the same room he would get the answers that he was seeking.

Todd had been home for three months and he had been distraught ever since he learned about Marty's breakdown. He had tried to see her, but every time he went to Saint Anne's he was told that she was too sick to see any visitors.
Todd had finally had enough. If he was going to see Marty, he had to take matters into his own hands. He transformed himself into a nun and went back to Saint Ann's.
He quickly made his way to her room and used the badge that he had swiped from one of the other nuns.
T.M. was looking out the window but he could sense that Todd was there. "Hello Todd," he said as he turned around.
Todd gasped and rushed to Marty's side when he saw her. "Who did this to you?" he asked as he traced the scar on her cheek. It bothered him to see her branded with the scar that had haunted them both.
"I did."
"Why would you hurt yourself Marty?"
"Marty's not here right now."
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm T.M. one of Marty's alters. We've met several times, but in the past it served my purposes to let you believe that I was our girl Marty, but now I think it's best that you know exactly who I am."
"Marty has DID?"
"Do you know what T.M. stands for?"
"What?" Todd asked as he sighed out of frustration.
"Todd Manning of course. I thought that it was an appropriate name considering that I exist because of you."
"That can't be true. I've researched DID...my sister has it...most alters are created because of childhood trauma," Todd said defensively. He couldn't be the reason that Marty was sick.
"Yes, that's true. The others were created when Marty was a child. She was broken long before she came into your life, but you broke her all over again. Did you honestly think that Marty survived being gang raped without any side affects? All of that anger and all of that rage had to go somewhere. I was created to protect Marty because nobody else did a dam thing to help her that night. Do you remember when you bragged to me about raping Marty while you were recovering from the scar that Luna gave you?"
Todd couldn't answer... the guilt was too much. He hated the things that he had done. He had foolishly believed that Marty had gotten over what he did to her, but now the damage that he caused her was staring him in the face and he couldn't bear it.
"What's the matter Toddy? The guilt eating you alive? That's okay, I know you remember that night, that was me. I was the one who tricked you into confessing. God, I wanted to kill you that night. It took everything I had not to stab you with the knife that I had in my nurse's uniform, but I had to settle on giving Marty the justice she deserved instead."
"Why didn't you just kill me? I know that's what I deserved."
"Maybe, but it's not about what you deserve or what I want. It's about what Marty needs. I can't kill you because unfortunately her salvation depends on you."
"What do you mean by that?" Todd asked.
"Nothing, I've said too much already. If you really want to help Marty, you'll find a way to break her out of here. This place isn't making Marty better, it's making her sicker, so if you ever want to see her again, you'll find a way to break her free. You better go, Doctor Levin will be here for our session any time now," T.M. stated as he sat in the rocking chair and began to rock.
"I'll be back, I promise." Todd stated as he left.
-
"I want to talk to Megan?" Docter Levin said as he walked into the room.
"She's busy in her control tower," T.M. joked.
Doctor Levin injected T.M. with a syringe. He was tired of dealing with T.M.'s attitude and he was hoping that Megan would answer his questions about Irene.
"Just relax and listen to my voice. I'm going to count backwards from 10, when I get to 10, you will be at a state of complete relaxation and you will let me speak with Megan," Doctor Levin commanded with his hypnotic voice.
When Doctor Levin reached 10, T.M. dissapeared and Megan opened her eyes.
XOXOXO
John had gotten a call that a woman that fit Irene's description was seen on the pier. He went down there and saw Irene sitting on the edge dangling her feet in the water.
"Hello detective, what took you so long?" Irene asked.
"You've been expecting me?"
"Of course...I knew that you would hurry down here if I called you...and here you are."
"I have to place you under arrest for the murder of Doctor Buhari," John said as he handcuffed her hands behind her back.
"I understand detective. Will you take me to see Marty after you're done reading me my rights?"
"Marty? Why would I take you to see her?"
"Because it's been driving you crazy that you haven't figured out my motive for allegedly killing Doctor Buhari. If you were a good, smart detective you would have already figured it out by now, but since you're stupid you'll have to take me to see Marty if you want any answers."
"Shut up and get in the car," John ordered.
-
"Megan?" Doctor Levin asked.
"Present and accounted for." Megan stated.
"I have a lot of questions for you. Will you answer them?"
"I will answer them if it is in Marty's best interest to do so."
"Why did Irene kill doctor Buhari?"
"Doctor Buhari knew too much information about our existence."
"Why would that bother Irene?"
"Pass"
"Do you have any interest in becoming integrated?"
"Of course...it's why I became a therapist."
"Why don't you trust other therapists to help you with integration?"
"Pass."
"Why do you care about Todd Manning?"
"Marty's salvation depends on him."
"Why?"
"Pass."
There was a knocking on the door so Doctor Levin got up to answer. "John, I'm in the middle of a session with Marty. Can you come back in an hour or so?"
"No, I have Irene here with me. She wants to speak with Marty. Will you let her have a couple of minutes with her?
"Yes, I think that would prove to be quite beneficial, but I must stay in the room at all times."
"Of course," John stated as he brought Irene into the room.
"Hello Megan, may I please speak with Marty?" Irene asked.
"No, you may not."
"I'm Marty's mother and I have her best interests at heart."
"You're not her mother. You were her stepmother at one time but when Marty's father died you became nothing to her. We both know that she doesn't remember you so your request to speak with Marty is denied."
"I have something very important that I want to tell her."
"You can give me the message and If I find it an acceptable message I will make sure that she gets it."
"Tell her not to give up hope. I am working at evening the score."
"I will make sure that Marty remains hopeful. I'm tired...I'm going to my room now."
"Megan, we haven't finished our session yet. I still have more questions that need to be answered," Doctor Levin stated.
"Our hour has come and gone and I will not be answering any more of your questions tonight. I will be going to my room now," Megan stated as she left the office.
When Megan returned to the room she saw a nun there. The nun was facing the window, but only one person could affect Megan this way. She was dead inside...she preferred it that way...feelings were messy and only complicated the situation, but Todd had always gotten through her cold exterior and he had become the one person, besides Marty, that she was capable of loving.
"You came back for me," Megan stated.
The nun turned around and Megan ran into his arms when she recognized his scar.
XOXOXO
"You came back for me," Megan stated as she ran into Todd's arms.
"Of course I did...I would do anything for you," Todd stated as he held her in his arms. It had been a long, long time since Marty had let him hold her and he wanted to savor the moment for as long as possible...then it occurred to him that he might not be holding Marty at all, but one of her other personalities. "Marty?" Todd stated as he pulled out of her arms just enough to see her beautiful blue eyes.
"Unfortunately Marty is still sleeping. She's far too exhausted and needs her rest. It's a shame because I know that she would be happy to see you."
"Who are you? You couldn't 't be T.M?" Todd asked.
"I'm Megan...I'm the gatekeeper personality. It's my responsibility to protect Marty at all times. T.M. exists because I failed her once, but I will never let any harm come to her again."
"We need to get you out of here, before the other nuns come to check on you," Todd stated as he held his hand out to Megan.
Megan took his hand and escorted her outside. He helped her climb over the wall where he had a car waiting for them. They got in and he began to drive away.
"So Megan...you said that T.M. exists because you failed to protect Marty. How did you fail to protect her?" Todd asked. He wanted to gather as much information about Marty's alters as possible. He knew from his experience with Vicki that each and every alter had a purpose and a mission to carry out. In order to help Marty become integrated he had to get to know each and every one of her alters so he knew where they fit in the puzzle of her shattered existence.
"The night of the Spring Fling...I left Marty alone. I should have come out or let one of the others out, but I watched her suffer without doing anything to make her suffering stop. Marty created T.M. to protect her because I abandoned her when she needed me most."
"Why...why didn't you let one of the alters out?" Todd asked as he tried to keep himself from crying.
"You're not the first man or the last to rape Marty. At the time of the Spring Fling I let my emotions get in the way and it clouded my reasoning. I wanted Marty to be integrated so badly and she had been making such great strides that I thought that I could tell her the truth behind our existence. I deducted that if she was strong enough to survive being gang raped then I could finally share the memories that I've been keeping from her and we could be integrated. I was wrong to test Marty's strength and I should have stepped in. I'm sorry that I let her down and left her alone when you..."
"When I raped her," Todd stated. "Who else raped her? You said that I wasn't the first...who hurt Marty?"
"It was somebody else that Marty loved."
"But what was his name? And who was he to Marty?"
"I can't provide any more details. I've shared what I can with you because Marty's salvation lies in your hands, but I won't betray Marty even if it's for you."
"Why am I the only one who can save Marty?"
"I don 't know," Megan said as she laid her head against the window.
Todd felt emotionally and physically drained. Talking about his past had brought a lot of unfortunate memories to the surface that he found it impossible to focus on driving. He pulled over to the nearest Motel and paid for a room.
The only room that they had only contained one bed.
"I'm going to go sleep in the car," Todd mumbled as soon as Megan had climbed into bed.
"Don't leave Todd. I know that you won't hurt me or Marty...come and lay down. We need you. She needs your arms around her...I need you to stay. I feel so safe with you...please stay and hold me," Megan pleaded with him.
Megan's pleas reminded Todd of the night that he regretted most. He would not leave her again so he climbed into bed next to her and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm so sorry that I ever hurt Marty or you," Todd stated.
"I know. I love you," Megan replied as she closed her eyes.
XOXOXO
John went down to check on Irene, but her cell was empty except for the note that she had left behind.
"John -
Thank you for taking me to see Marty. It was important that I see her so that she doesn't give up hope until I have found a cure. I'll be in touch.
-Irene Manning"
John crumpled up the note in her hand. What did Irene mean? Was Marty sick? John had so many questions about Irene's involvement in Marty's life.
XOXOXO
Megan looked over at Todd who was sleeping. She wished that she could stay longer, but her head was pounding and she knew that she would be leaving soon. "Don't give up on us," she whispered as she closed her eyes.
Madison opened up her eyes and saw Todd laying down next to her. She needed to get as far away from him and his love as she could get. Love was toxic and only led to pain. She had no use for love...she only wanted to have a good time.
She slipped out from underneath Todd's arm and went into the bathroom. Megan had the worst taste in clothing. She would have to go shopping as soon as possible, but for now she would have to make this drab little outfit work. She tore her shirt so that her stomach was showing and she applied her lipstick.
She grabbed Todd's car keys and went out looking for some action.
