''It can't be that bad.'' I say challengingly. It can't be, right?
''Everyone has their limits. Here it is: We wanna get them from behind, right? Well, the only way to do that is to be one level higher than the one they're on right now. We obviously can't use the stairs, since that would be a dead give away of our location. So the only way to get higher up is...''
''To climb the building by the outside,'' I finish, ''Well, shit.''
''I totally understand if...''
''No,'' I say firmly. '' We're doing this.'' Will smiles, his first genuine smile, one that reaches his eyes. I smile too, because it's contagious, you know.
''Well, we better get started while we still have some light.'' he says.
As soon as he finishes his sentence, we hear the heavy boots of the other Dauntless outside our door. They must be four or five, and we hear doors around us slamming. They're looking for us. Will realizes it too, and he quickly hurries me towards the window. He opens it and I slowly start stepping onto the very, very old and not sturdy ledge.
''They can't be that far, right? Just a couple more rooms to check and then we're good,'' a deep rumble comes from the other side of the door. Will hurries me out and I step onto the remains of the building. I find little niches in the rock for my hands and feet and I start sliding around the building, looking for an appropriate place to climb up.
Will climbs out, just in time too because someone kicks the door open and walks around. We're both hanging on as hard as we can, stomachs pressed to the cold brick wall, holding our breath in just to be sure that the person doesn't hear us. I keep moving so that Will can get away from the window, but I'm looking at him, and not at my feet.
I'm so fucking stupid.
The ledge under my left foot gives out, and I muffle my scream. Shit, shit, shit! Little blocks of concrete fall down, and I look.
How many stupid moves can I make?
A dizzying 20 ft fall looks me right in the face, and I only clutch the wall a bit harder. Will is hurrying towards me as fast as he can, and my foot is searching for another piece of rock that I can use.
He grips my elbow and pulls me straight into his arms. While one of my hands grips the wall tightly, my other hand is tied around his biceps. I hold on, and I close the space between us.
I feel my boot touch something, and I very gently put it down. I'm centered again.
It's only then that I realize that I'm as close to Will as I have ever been. There's barely enough room to blink.
For some reason, I don't slide away as fast as I should have.
I've never seen someone look at me so intensely. His green eyes are piercing into mine, as if he were peering into my soul. His breath hitches, and before I can do anything, he leans into me and just before he does what I think he'll do, he whispers gently into my ear, ''Look.''
I do, and I almost lose my grip. The light is shining through the desert of concrete we've been playing in. The sky is so many different shades of pink and blue and yellow that it's dizzying. I can hear him smile, and I just hold on tighter. I don't think I've ever felt this good in my entire life.
For a second, I forget the game, forget the stress of initiation and I just... feel. I feel the breeze playing with my hair, feel the clenching and unclenching of Will's muscles, feel the rush of adrenaline that I always do when I'm about to do something crazy.
I hug him a bit tighter, then I suddenly let go and pull myself onto the ledge higher than me. I pull myself into a window as I hear him laugh and say, ''If you keep going, you'll be stronger than me!''
I smile, and the warm fuzzy feeling that I usually get around Blaze hits me ten times harder. In a second, Will joins me in the room and asks me with his cheeky expression, ''Ready to kick some ass?''
I don't need to respond, I just load my gun and ready myself for a fight nobody will forget.
